It's four-and-a-half years since The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild launched on Switch (and Wii U — don't be forgetting the Wii U!) and it's one of those evergreen games I've been dipping back into ever since.
That's not to say I'm constantly restarting the game (although there are plenty of people who begin again on the regular), but after returning to polish off the Champion's Ballad DLC, charge up the Master Sword to its full potential, and get my hands on the Master Cycle Zero, I still find myself launching the game and gliding across Hyrule to hunt down the last few dozen Koroks and generally enjoy the game's serene atmosphere.
A quick glance at my completion percentage (as found in the bottom left corner of the map screen) indicates that after playing for '280 hours or more' — blimey! — my Breath of the Wild save file is 94.53% complete. Getting there! Slowly.
In fact, I recall looking at the same % stat just after defeating Calamity Ganon for the first time and being shocked at how low it was. I don't remember the exact number, but it was surprising considering I had just 'finished' the game.
Out of sheer curiosity, I asked some Nintendo Life staff just how 'complete' their BOTW percentage stat is. A couple told me that they'd lost their original saves to previous Switches (or simply wiped them after starting another playthrough), so their low percentage wasn't an accurate reflection of their time with the game.

Wow, only 32.75% in BotW for me. I did the four big thingamajigs, all 120 shrines, unlocked the whole map with those towers and then went and beat Ganon, but yeah, somehow only 32.75… I also found a thing that says I’ve done 34/77 side quests.
Video producer Jon Cartwright has completed absolutely everything in the game, although it was those blasted Korok seeds which kept him from 100%-ing it for a long time:
335 hours for me... [the final seed] ended up being an incredibly simple one by Tarrey Town.
It's clear that even people who have put several dozen hours into Breath of the Wild can have surprisingly little of the overall game ticked off, so today we're asking how much of Breath of the Wild have you completed? Map regions, Korok seeds, quests — they all go towards that final total.

Well, I got the game a couple weeks ago, so I’m not finished yet. It’s hard to say the actual % since I don’t know how big the game is, but I’d estimate 1-5 maybe? I’m still finding my first Divine Beast.
EDIT: I booted up my game and it doesn’t show on my map, so probably it only appears once you beat the game.
It doesn’t even show me the percentage on the map. That probably shows how hard I bounced off it.
I've had 100% since around four months after release, but that's only 50% overall because you gotta do it again on hard mode, of which I've only done all shrines.
Really need to go back to that...
I don't know the percentage but my personal goal was every base game shrine and all the fairy things. So that's what I did.
On my recent playthrough, en-route to finding all the shrines without a guide I found around 450 Koroks too, enough to max out my inventory capacity. This was with all main and DLC quests completed, and most, but not all sidequests finished.
After beating Calamity Ganon, that was only around 45% completed. It appears that too much weight is given to the Korok seeds, it would be better if you had separate completion categories to glean, because Korok seeds alone isn't necessarily worth pursuing.

I'd throw a guess of no greater than 40%. I scoured the map for shrines and secrets, but I passed on korok seeds because the reward was never worthwhile to me (not the final reward, but increased weapon and gear slots).
Looking back at it, I played it for what felt like an eternity but truly %-wise? I did the 4 dungeons, the towers and the shrines and that' basically about...it?
WOAH! I never even realised that the percentage was there, but I will only probably be around 80% as gave up on Koroks and still havent beaten Ganon, but completed all side quests but still have one shrine to find.
I don't feel like booting up the game now but I'm pretty sure I had pretty much everything except the korok seeds which I'm not gonna bother with after learning what the, in my opinion, rather insulting reward for that was. Had roughly half of the korok seeds I think. Don't know what percentage that comes down to though.
I bought this game on the day the Switch launched, have played something like 125-150 hours on two Switches, and never defeated Ganon. I also never made any concerted efforts to complete all the Shrines or find all the Korok seeds or, well, any kind of completion. The vast majority of my time in BOTW has just been rambling across the land, cooking awful food, cheesing the occasional Lynel and chilling. That's just what this game is for me.
I don't know what my percentage is offhand, but I'd be very surprised if it was 50%.
Still one of my best-loved games on the Switch and maybe an all time classic. I'm not playing it now, but I'll go back to it sometime for sure.
I had done all the quests, shrines and beat the game by the time the game was a month old. But to this day I still haven't gotten around to buying the DLC.
I tried it for around 6 hours but I really didn't like it at all.

So getting seeds doesn’t help me. I’m stuck on the camel boss the second time thru where you only get one weapon and no armour.
I where around 54% when finished. Didn't have enough spirits to find all Koroks (just missing them probably).
Hopefully the % rate will be greater when playing master mode, which I just started btw.
I voted between 0 - 9 % as i have no interest anymore with BOTW. It was not the right game for me after all.
I have a plan to sell my BOTW and Xenoblade 2 to buy other games that i have more interest about.
Just so people know, the percentage is how much of the map you have filled in and nothing else. Anything that marks the map counts e.g. finding a shrine but things that don't mark it don't count e.g. completing a shrine. About 75% is just the Korok seeds alone.
The percentage tracker should have been greatly reweighted towards the actual game or not in there at all. I can just about see the worth of tracking down every little sidequest, but getting the korok seeds is bascially like collecting every coin in a Mario game. Like sure, you do you, and there's some interesting challenge in it, but it's so far from the actual point of the game and actively detrimental to most people's enjoyment.
Wow, I'm only at 43.84 percent and I played the hell out of the game. I guess there's a bunch of side quests and such I didn't do. And there's no way I'm tracking down every korok seed.

I've finished playing it mostly. People loves completion percentages and achievements and all that but it's not my jam. I would say I almost completely 'finished' BotW because there isn't anything I want to do.
79,05%, all shrines, all quests, 647 Korok seeds, every outfit (but not everything maxed out). All by myself without any guide or other help.
I had to google percentage separately because I saw none - turns out you have to beat the final boss before the map even displays it. As for the playtime, the bulk of its profile display didn't carry over to the new Switch (a downside of cloud saves vs direct transfer), but IIRC it should be something over 120 hours. Every single one of the boss fights, with their "target the boss in the middle, then run around, with the camera swirling behind you whilst focusing on them, around and around and round and round and swirly whirly weeeeee!" caused my motion sickness to kick in.
As a result, I haven't yet headed into the castle for the Ganon-fight, because I just know I'm going to end up chucking up chunks..
But that's ok.
I got a LOT of enjoyment out of exploring the wonderful landscape, and as someone who's stuck indoors, that felt fantastic.
I'm kinda looking forward to the sequel, but I'm also quite disappointed that it's going to be the exact same landscape that I've already explored to death.
True, there's floaty bits.. but will that be enough to hold me over for 350+ hours again?

About 80%. Wanted to get my $60 worth because the main story and DBs along with the repetitive 100 shrines left me completely unsatisfied. But going around a huge mundane map looking for the tiniest detail off that could be a korok is not exactly fun either
I don't remember even seeing a percentage on the map, but I'm only on about 80 out of 120 shrines so it wouldn't be very high anyway. I do intend to go back to it and finish all of those plus the side quests before the sequel comes out. Probably won't bother with the Korok seeds though, I'm not that crazy.
I got all the shrines and quests, but not all koroks on the Wii U. On Switch, I have 100% completed on the map with all the optional outfits, medals, dlc stuff, and upgraded all my outfits and master sword... except someone just gave me nfc chips for additional outfits to get and upgrade. I'm not thrilled about getting more star fragments or whatever they are called.
Master Mode just wasn't as fun to me. I didn't mind weapon durability in the normal mode, but in master mode it was a pain in the beginning and the whole thing just wasn't as enjoyable for the casual gamer I am now.
I never thought I'd get all the korok seeds, but I just kept using them as an excuse to jump back into Hyrule until I got them all.
40 something percent. I've played through the game multiple times (at least twice a year since launch) and on those playthroughs I get all shrines, enough koroks to max inventory, most armors to max upgrade and all quests done including master sword trials and champion's ballad.
I love Zelda but every time I just sorta fall off the wagon on its journey and let it gather dust after a while. I've played BotW maybe a handful of times. I dunno, maybe if it had more of depth to it in regards to story, cause, effect..

Completed the game but only did about half the shrines.
Once I get to the credits in a game, I quite often call it game over and move on.
I found the shrines to be a bit to repetitive to go back and finished them.
Over 100% as I’ve also completed all the Kass quests, made most of the recipes, collected the best weapons/shields/bows have all the Amiibo (and rare drops), upgraded all clothing, fully completed the dlc (minus doing it all over again on Master Mode), etc..
I'm not sure what my stat is or if I even knew there was one. I'll have to boot up the Wii U when I get home to have a look
I know for definite though, that I have everything in the game except one of the bridles from doing the hardest horseback archery course!
I only started it a few months ago and am trying to visit every location, so I'm probably around 12%. Oh well, it's the journey, not the destination.
100% on Normal, everything except about 250 Korok Seeds on Master.
I haven't played in about 2 years but I know I've completed all the shrines, towers, beasts, flashbacks, main story, dlc. I never bothered too much with the seeds, collecting all the armour, cooking, or dyes.
With over 250h put in the game, I'm not even close to "completion" (and I don't think I'll ever be). Games are something I try to experience organically, and obsessing over Korok Seeds etc isn't really my thing.
I've played over 250 hours and completed only 30% of the game! I haven't gone mad for Koroks, or shrines but I have completed the main story and the DLC. I think my children play a lot on my save (although they have their own saves too) which may have inflated the hours without increasing the progress.
Finished enough. It was an awesome game but with absolutely zero story...it was kinda one and done for me.
I’ll never get all the seeds, outside that, I’ve beaten the game several times, at various completion %, and will continue playing it just as long as I can play video games. I replay zelda games like I have a problem. I could probably give up all video games beside the zelda series.

The most of % is korok seeds. You can solve all the shrines, collect all the pictures, slay all the lynels of the world , but you still have to find all the koroks and get the pupu award for 100%, its kind of dump to even try.
@Bunkerneath You’d be surprised. I beat all the shrines, plus Ganon, 44/47 side quests and found over 200 Korok seeds. Completion percentage: 44.7%. Pfft…
In normal mode, I have all the quests cleared, 2 of the 3 Master trials beaten, and about 600 korok seeds left.
In my master mode file, I still have quests to beat, and I haven't been able to clear any of the master trials. That being said, I only need another 175 or so seeds to have them all.
The tricky part in my Master Mode playthrough is that I've left all the towers untouched so that the map is entirely blank. I've been doing it all from memory and just random exploration.
I take it that % only appears if you've got the DLC? Either that or I'm getting distracted...
But I'm approaching 300 hours, and I'm still lacking approximately 300 Korok seeds, 1 memory, 2 shrines (and I've already scouted the whole map, there goes thinking I got that one covered...) and 1 side quest.
I've completed it on Normal and again on Hardmode - DLC included. Im still on around 35% on both goes - mental! I did think about doing all the koroks then I... did other stuff instead. Its a slow process. I love this game.
Lol i havent finished it yet. Doing those temple stuff and side quests, looking for all those cloths killing guardians lol.

It's wasn't the koroks that tripped me up, but finding all the map locations to reach 100% completion. I hope I get some kind of bonus in BotW2 for that LOL

Thunderblight DLC Master version is proving too difficult for me.

108% - done all the glitch chests, rode Thomas the Tank Engine, slayed the Shrek Hinox & fought off Gannon in his Hello Kitty form.
@MichaelP I'm hopeful there's going to be new underground caverns to explore, to go along with the floaty islands.
But as for the main overground area, the things we've seen so far are all pointing to it being the same area.

After playing for ~135 hours, I only have 25.67% complete, haha! I did all the Divine Beasts and defeated Ganon, but I never bothered with all the Koroks, Shrines, quests, etc. Just goes to show that this game is as deep as you make it.

I'm one of the people that BOTW just didn't click with. I stopped after 30 hours and probably 5-10% judging by the comments here.
I finished and was at 27%. That game blows my mind.
I put myself in the 80-89% range as it's been almost 4 treats since I played it, didn't touch any DLC, found about 600+ Koroks, and still had one more shrine to do (I know where it is, just didn't knock it out). So many games, so little time... Maybe one day before BOTW2.
I completed the story, dlc, all shrines, created the town after the game, and mine says 57% complete. I'd love to know how much of that is korok seeds. It's probably mostly unfound korok seeds. I don't find hunting korok seeds fun. I've got a few hundred hours in that save file. Probably 100 is hunting guardians for fun.

But we haven't really seen anything. I can't just imagine, after a +4 years development time, all Nintendo is adding are a bunch of floating islands, some new game mechanics and a new story. Sure, the main structure of the map will mostly be the same, but I'm pretty sure. we will see lot of new things.

I was satisfied with beating the game and finding all 100 shrines (not including the DLC which I never bought). I'm not that much of a completionist. Still an amazing game though. No idea of the percentage, I don't have the game anymore.
I'm just shy of 76% my file is missing exactly 300 of the 900 Korok seeds. (72% total for all the Koroks, 24% for the missing 300)
Honestly I've completed it and all shrines 3 times across Wii U, Switch and Hard mode, but the 900 korok seeds for the prize of a golden POO is just not worth it imho... and virtually impossible without a guide... which is exactly the opposite of what BotW is all about.

I got this game November 2019 and my percentage is 84.69%. Its mostly Koroks seeds i need to get. I've got 716 of them and i need to get the Hinox and Stone Talus Medals too. I don't know if the medals are part of the percentage or not but I'm going to get them.
13.56% and over 60 hours played. I did the 4 main dungeons and beat Ganon. Maybe I will revisit it at some point to do more. I think the shrines would be the most compelling thing to return for.

The percentage in this game is sh*t because 60% of it is about chasing literal sh*t. The rest 40% is food though.
@chipia I stopped after 50 shrines. I know people praise BOTW but for me it felt like there were so many shrines for the sake of padding out gameplay.

I thought the stats where only showing "map" completion, some area names only show up when you have been there. I have no idea how my stats are, but I do know there are still tons of Korok-seeds to find (so also lots of areas to visit), there are some optional quests to get certain clothes (dlc stuff) and the I have to upgrade clothes to the max. Oh, and some saddles. And some medaillions you can get from that creepy shopkeeper. Other then that I have done everything.

I completed all shrines and every single main and side quest except all the DLC and never bothered getting all korok seeds. Spent an entire month just doing that. Then I was just burnt out.
One day I do plan on going for 100%. I typically never consider a Zelda game finished until every last item is collected and all optional quests are completed but with BOTW I just got overwhelmed.
My OCD with these type of games just won't let me stop until I'm driven mad. I dread the probable size of the sequel!
I 100%-ed the game a long time ago, in no small part due to an interactive map online to help me find the Korok Seeds.
Cheating? Maybe, but when you need 900 Korok Seeds, half of which you don't even need in a practical sense (as in, maxing out your inventory slots), in order to 100% the game, I don't feel bad about it.
Now, I just primarily stand on top of Dueling Peaks, overlook Central Hyrule, and farm Star Fragments to sell them at a high price. Occasionally, I'll also farm Guardian parts (mostly to get the super-rare Giant Ancient Cores to forge Ancient Bows), but largely, it's just Star Fragments for me now.
No idea, but I finished it as quickly as possible.
@WoomyNNYes yeah, I've delved in a couple of times, but even small battles within enclosed space seem to make my nausea worse. As do the inside the shrines, or worse.. whichever of the beasts it was where you rotated the whole thing and everything flipped up and down and. Bleurgh!!!
But, yeah, I definitely got more than enough enjoyment from the game, easily some of the best gaming I've had for a long time, and I'll be buying the sequel, and probably not finishing that for hours, too
Just started my second playthrough of Master Mode. Grinded straight to the Master Sword, plowed through the Divine Beasts and Champions Ballad. Using the Master Cycle now to finish up the rest. I worry about the compendium because I don't think the level one version of the enemy's are in Master mode?
I beat three of four beasts. Never bothered with the lizard one, never bothered to fight Ganon - I really just didn't want to play the game any more. I had soldiered on with quests and upgrades and such for a good long while after the charm was lost, but I realized it was a sunk cost fallacy and was just making me miserable so I ditched it. I'm not exactly hyped for the next game.
I did watch a friend who I think was just missing some koroks and/or upgrades fight the boss and do the ending. ...It wasn't worth it.

I found it boring after awhile. I'm not quite sure how BOTW was defined as revolutionary or setting new standards for open world games.
I mean the game does the same tedious fetch quests seen in 100 million other open world games.

After collecting 441 korok seeds to max out the number of slots for shields and weapons, collecting any more becomes meaningless, so I never bothered aiming for 100% - more so as each additional % requires you to spend more and more additional time.

It's the only Zelda game that a few people will ever replay it.
Me, as a hardcore Zelda fan, have played EVERY Zelda game many times over, with 100% completion throughout my lifetime.
BotW is the only one in the series in which I mostly hear people that its a once-and-finished game for them. Nobody wants to go back and replay it from start to finish until 100% (they just sometimes play it for the fun, but that's it)
Don't get me wrong, its a GREAT game. But as everyone said, collecting 100% feels meaningless, repetitive and drags on. (A thing in which the other Zeldas did quite alright)

Shocked at my percentage when I've finished off Gannon and onto Champions ballad 🤔 amazing game, obviously got loads more to do! A game to revisit for ever. Admittedly frustrating at the start for me but well worth perceiving 😊
BOTW was the first time in the series where I honestly didn't have the willpower to even try to replay it.
It's just too much to 100%. It doesn't help that the plot takes dip and isn't as memorable imo as other titles. Ganon was ultimately a let down in terms of difficulty and characterization.
100% on the map, plus everything that isn't factored into that 100% meter like the medallions.
Right now, I'm working on getting 100% in Age of Calamity. Thanks to the DLC adding in another pointless difficulty level, I'm stuck to grinding this game for another hundred hours.

I got just far enough to get the Master Sword and finish the game. I've barely touched the DLC, and still have a bunch of shrines to find and conquer. I tell myself I'll get around to all that as soon as I'm done with [GAME I'M PLAYING].

Probably 10%ish. Think it says I've played for 15 hours, but most of that felt like a chore. Spoiled myself with Genshin Impact first, so BoTW feels like an empty wasteland in comparison and could never get into it.

Wow, reading these comments has been a real eye-opener for me. I can’t believe so many Nintendo gamers either don’t like this game or got bored and gave up. I’m playing through it now and have sunk about 200 hours in so far, and have found it to be a really transformative experience. I get the Korok seed complaints (no way am I getting 900!) but other than that it is a joy to play. True escapism.

I'm pretty sure the game was at 100% before I bought the DLCs. I've done every main quest, every side quest, all of the EX chests, every shrine, etc. etc.
I found enough Korok seeds to upgrade everything except some more shield slots, and that seems pointless once you get the Hylian shield. I'm okay with not having a golden poo.

@Picola-Wicola I like Zelda but I can't sit and pretend as if BOTW is this genre defining game of the century. I'm cutting it some slack because it's Nintendo's first open world Zelda game but it has many problems seen in other games.
The side quests are underwhelming, the story is not the best in the series, the shrines while plenty, only a handful are interesting and not a memorable as dungeons seen in previous titles.
I could go on, but BOTW does alot of things right and plentiful things wrong. it's still a 8/10 for me, but it's a one and done game.
Trying to 100% this game takes hours of repetitiveness that only a true completionist will shoot for. One playthrough for me atleast is enough.
Not very considering i dropped it pretty quick after the 2nd beast. The world is absolutely gorgeous and i can get behind the fatigue bar but thats about it for me. The shrines were ok but didnt compare to a themed dungeon imo and the divine beasts were internally boring also i didnt like the degradable weapons at all and thought they broke too quickly. Glad others found enjoyment with it tho.
I’m at 99.75% on my master mode file… I have all korok seeds and somehow I am missing locations to get 100%. Not sure how that’s possible.
I was silly enough to get all 900 korok seeds but Aonuma did say in interviews that they never intended for players to do so; they only placed that many seeds so unlocking sufficient inventory space would be doable for most players.
I’m played it 3 times and I go shallower each play through. With a star in my save file I have 22%. I remember doing a deep search for koror seeds and really went for all the shrines on my first play through so I’m guessing I was around 70% but I deleted the save file
@BabyYoda71 Correct, only once you beat the game. Of the 21% that are 100% I can guarantee you 100% of those used a guide to get all the Koroks.
Finished as in I beat Ganon and did a few side contents... always get that itch to jump back in though.
I'd love to 100% it but the idea of hunting down every last korok seems like the very definition of 'anti-fun'
@Asaki @dsparil that's not entirely correct, the completion percentage meter is rather nuanced in what does and does not count towards 100%. For instance you have to clear a divine beast in order to claim the additional 0.08% on your percentage meter.
Had to get my Switch copy out to check since I was curious. 20%. Played it for 120+ hours and beat it and I'm happy with that. Too many other games to play!
More then 205 hours in, 47.26 completion. Still a looooong way to go!

@twztid13 there is only one completion percentage meter, so yes they're all lumped in together. You do have to beat Gannon for the meter to show up on your map screen though.
I'm aware of what the speedrunners say, but like I said in my comment the facts are rather more nuanced than that simple definition would allow. I've been watching a series by YouTuber Wolf Link dubbed a 'minimalist run' whereby he wants to 100% complete the game using only the barest minimum of tools, things like side quests which don't count towards the completion percentage are ignored. It's a great series and has really shone a light on what actually increases the percentage counter, which is why I mentioned about the divine beasts because their icons don't properly appear on the map until you've completed them. I don't even think towers are required, so your information may not be correct.
