I'd be impressed if the game was actually a remake, but it's just a port of the PC version with the higher resolution textures, almost virtual console worthy, so a physical version doesn't seem justifiably right.

I've just tested Mario Kart 8 with the Official Wii Component cables, set my Wii U to 480i and 4:3. The Wii U menu displays letterboxed, but loading Mario Kart 8 and starting a race also displays letterboxed 4:3.

Incorrect, Wii U only supports 16:9 wide-screen output. The Wii version will support 4:3 natively and offer anamorphic widescreen.
