The Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath Kollection has been available on the Switch eShop since last week, but if you've been holding out for a physical copy and happen to be located in the Americas, we've got some bad news.
Although a user on the NSCollectors subreddit said they had messaged the Warner Bros. support Twitter account and were told the Switch physical Kollection would include the original game card along with a voucher for the DLC, the deal appears to be worse than expected based on the latest Amazon listings:
As you can see, the game box art for this region now makes it incredibly clear that the game card is not included in this package. This is instead a "full game download" which will require you to have a microSD in your system. These labels might not look particularly nice, but they're at least a good warning.
According to multiple listings on Amazon, the not-so-physical Switch release of MK11: Aftermath will arrive on 16th June for $59.99. For anyone outside of the US, the official fact sheet for Aftermath noted how the physical Kollection would "only" be available in the Americas.

Wow so the vanilla version that I got is actually the only way to have the game physically. I guess it worked out for me in the end.
There is nothing nice to say about this, so I'll just leave it at that.
The size of the game might be something to put in the article.
@JayJ Same here.
Now I wonder how this'll affect the sales of the base game.
@Varkster no that isn't a valid excuse at all they could have given it a card a whole lot of companies could but have been cheapening out on that.
The concept of selling physical copies of empty cases is incredibly stupid... the only real point of this not-so-physical copies is to appeal to collector's which ironically are also pretty upset about this as well.
Not a deal breaker, I will eventually get it digital.
Eventually just like PC gamers, physical games will be a thing of the past and I won't be affected one bit since I already but all of my games digitally
DLC is always a download and never appears in playable form directly off a cart.
Just another exercise in futility.
@Old_Man_Nintendo Yes, unfortunately I agree that it's the most likely scenario in the future. But those of us who already own physical copies of games won't be affected either so I'm not sure what your point is...? Physical games can also provide the best peace of mind when it comes to a back-up, if the console storage were to be compromised in some way after the platforms servers eventually go down.
Absolutely ******* pointless.
I'm in the UK, so this release doesn't really apply to me anyway... but I think I'm actually done supporting any game on Switch now that doesn't include the full game on a cartridge. And on principle alone for them cheaping out on retail releases, not buy those games digitally either. It's not like there aren't enough other games to play.
If anyone is going to get my digital purchase money, I'd rather give it to the Indies.
Be glad this game exist on Switch at all.
It's not like there is any Soul Calibur, Tekken or Dead or Alive on Switch.
@JayJ "So the vanilla version that I got is actually the only way to have the game physically. I guess it worked out for me in the end."
Except it didn't really, because the 8GB card they used still required a huge download (it was about 22GB if I remember right) to be able to play it. It might as well have been digital.
Sorry NO SALE!!
@Ventilator "Be glad this game exist on Switch at all."
People aren't annoyed by the fact it's available. They're annoyed by the BS practices of these companies. There's a difference.
If they just came out and said "Sorry guys, we're only releasing this digitally on the eshop", I doubt you'd see the same responses here.
@Chibi_Manny : As a collector, I have no interest in owning blank cases. I can somewhat forgive the practice on PC with certain games so long as I can back up the data to a Blu-ray or two (as blank cases typically include a disc/cartridge slot).
@ObsidianEleven I don't mind partial downloads most of the time. The reality of the situation is that Switch carts are friggin expensive. Consensus seems to be that 8GB Switch carts are roughly equivalent in cost to a 50GB PS4 disc. To use a large format card could very easily lead to a point where devs are only making pennies on a game sale. They gotta keep the lights on if we want games.
NOW THAT THAT HAS BEEN SAID, devs who release full price retail games without a cart are scum.
@Chibi_Manny yeah really, I hate the practice sooooooooooo much
I don't get this. When you buy a game you should get a cartridge inside. For the amount of money they are charging you aren't getting anything worthwhile.
So nobody see that it cost 59.99. I have spent over 100$ on this game and dlc then they turn around and do this *****. ***** them
Let's face it, this is the future of physical sales! Retailers can't make money on hardware alone, so this will be the way to keep them involved in game marketing and selling. If it can evolve to a nice presentation box or a small booklet with some art and obviously the cheaper price as per now, many gamers will accept that. Or even the same price, you're still getting something physical, much like "collector's editions" that proliferate now.
@Indielink I get that they need to make money, they're a business. I never have a problem with that.
I'm the type of person who, if I'm treated right, will always pay more for something I want. If they wanted to charge more because they used a larger cartridgr size, and it was reasonable, I'd do it every single time and not complain about it.
The reality is, what they think they are saving by putting the game on smaller sized cartridges, for instance, they're losing from a section of the market that won't buy because of the smaller cards used.
And yeah, full price retail games without a cartridge included are ******* ridiculous.
@HalBailman including a small exclusive art booklet or something like that actually isn't a terrible idea, marketed as a 'digital collector's edition' or something.
I think people would be much more on board with that as a practice, so long as publishers were properly upfront with what it actually was.
I just feel what they're doing right now, if anything, comes across as underhanded.
@ObsidianEleven Why? Physical is pointless either way for most games on any console.
I bought COD Modern Warfare 2019 last week for Xbox One.
Only 44.GB is on disc, and 100% unplayable.
Download add-on were 140.GB big to even make the game work.
It's 184.GB big.
Since when were games complete on release?
How is code in a box worse than a 140.GB add-on to make a disc game run more than only a game menu
Physical is useless nowadays.
Proper working physical games died with 3DS, Wii U, PS3, VITA and Xbox 360.
@ObsidianEleven Yes, it's definitely sneaky. I was a bit upset when StarLink required a 5GB download, so to advertise a "physical" release without a physical copy at all is a clear deception. I guess the only positive could come is if this "physical" copy is cheaper in major retailer stores, much like normal physical copies are. The 59.99 is RRP, which is really only the maximum price, as major retailers nearly always sell cheaper due to specific deals with Nintendo.
@Ventilator There are plenty of proper physical games this generation. While updates are good and improving many titles are playable from start to finish just from the physical media.
Btw isn't that CoD 2019 multiplayer only? If there is no campaign why even expect to be playable? This is like expecting World of Warcraft to be playable offline.
@Ventilator
1. When the servers go down, you still have access to play a version of that game, albeit without the patches. Unless you back the patch information up. Which is easily done and doesn't take up much storage space at all.
2. As above. Patches take up reasonably less storage space than full game downloads.. and I'd rather spend my money on games, not on SD cards.
3. Resale and the ability to lend games to people.
4. A nice looking box, without a huge big border screaming out saying "DOWNLOAD CODE IN BOX ONLY".
There's still a market for physical games, where the game is stored fully on the media (in at least some version of the game). If there wasn't a market for it, no one would be having the discussion right now.
@Zuljaras It's well known that COD Modern Warfare have a single player campaign as it always had in that series. Black Ops 4 is the only COD online game.
The 6 hour long single player doesen't work before you installed 184.GB.
Good luck trying to install and make this game work in 10 years if servers is offline.
Most games is in similar situation.
Point with physical games. They are more incomplete than ever.
Try comparing Mario Maker 2 and Smash Bros for example vs release versions. Loads of content is missing on physical even on Nintendo games.
@HalBailman
The Starlink download increased to something like 9.4GB with the last patch. I can't remember exactly how much now after removing it from my SD card.
I actually removed any data from games on my SD card that had mandatory installs to be able to play them, in some form, a while ago. MK11 on Switch was another of them. Which I'm not too bothered about, because the hair on the Switch version was horrendous to look at anyway.
@ObsidianEleven I backed up 100% of my Switch games on all SD cards to a USB HDD on PC, and backup again every time i buy games. Remember most people don't even know about this and didn't even know about this on Wii U or Wii.
Their loss in the future.
As i said above. COD Modern Warfare on disc only have 44.GB.
It required 140.GB which made the total size of the game 184.GB.
How much did it overwrite? Nothing?
I know most games don't have 140.GB patches, but even Nintendo games have that now. Try comparing Smash Bros and Mario Maker 2 versions today vs flash carts. Big difference.
You have to remember this: Nintendo is a**holes when it comes to preserving previous consoles.
Nintendo is the worst of them all. They already started to close Wii U servers and will remove the shop too.
Meanwhile, Sony and Microsoft still have 100% of their servers online 20 years back. Even PSP shops is still online, while the newer Nintendo DS shop were closed years ago. Nintendo is by far worst.
I have atleast 2 physical games on Switch that required around 20.GB download each as they were unplayable from flash.
Gamestop went bancrupt in 2020, and noone sells games anymore. They were the last shops to sell physical games.
Its all digital nowadays even on Switch.
Electronic local stores barely have physicals for Switch, PS4 and Xbox One anymore because it's dead. Noone buy them anymore and they have no selling value.
The only thing marketed nowadays by all stores is GPU, CPU, SSD etc. for PC as there is no money in consoles anymore unless you live in a third world country.
When that's said, i prefer physical over digital. Too bad loads of games isn't complete on Blu-Ray or carts.
This will get even worse on Xbox One SX and PS5.
@Ventilator "Try comparing Mario Maker 2 and Smash Bros for example vs release versions. Loads of content is missing on physical even on Nintendo games."
That content is easily backed up though, on even a small capacity Micro SD card that costs figuratively nothing. So really you would still have full access to the game in it's current form.
@Ventilator They still make Soulcalibur games?
@vio Yes. I have Soul Calibur 6 on PC. Released in 2018, so the series is not dead.
Soul Calibur 6 would easily run on Switch, and yet Namco refuses to port it to Switch.
@Ventilator Interesting. I guess it has waned in popularity over the years because I never hear about it anymore. I remember it being really popular in the late 90s/early 2000s.
@Ventilator All of those no name games still exist?
@Ventilator @vio I've not played Soul Calibur since 2 on the OG Xbox. Which is ironic, considering we're also talking about MK11, which also has Spawn in it now.
It's probably the only fighting game series I've never gone back to for some reason, despite liking it and playing the series since Soul Edge on PS1.
@ObsidianEleven 8GB is worthwhile savings, and it's still a physical copy.
@retro_player_77 Tekken 7 has shifted somewhere over 5 million units. I think you might need to reevaluate your definition of 'no name game' with that one.
DOA6 and Soul Calibur 6 both struggled from what I saw though. I might be wrong.
@ObsidianEleven Soul Calibur 1 on Dreamcast is still the best in the series.
When that's said, Soul Calibur 2 on GameCube have Link from Zelda as playable fighter.
DOA6 and Soul Calibur lost their market share.
Street Fighter 5 lost market share because it weren't released on all systems.
Mortal Kombat is the only successful series nowadays. I'm fine with that since i always thought MK were superior to all others the last 30 years.
@JayJ Except it isn't 8GB. There's only 6.6GB on the cartridge. I know, I'm being pedantic.
Still, it's a 6.6GB saving!
Why does this exist? Why do people buy these? Why would you go to a store to buy an empty box with a download code?! The box doesn't even look good, with that big blue and white warning label to remind you you're buying an empty box!
If you're going to download the game, just buy it from the eshop! Credit card, or buy a Nintendo card and pre-load a balance.
@Ventilator MK11 killed it last year (pun intended, I'll see myself out) and already surpassed SFV's total sale numbers. Saying that though, SFV has still sold over 4M units, so it's not a huge slouch.
I'd expect MK11 to overtake Tekken 7's 5M+ untis within a month or two, now Aftermath has released.
I've actually had more fun with MK11 and have more time in it than any other fighting game for a long while (though I play it exclusively on PS4 now).
@ObsidianEleven MK XL, but also MK 9 were also very good.
SFV had 2 major problems. It were a barebone game with no content on release, sold at full price. It were never released on Xbox and Wii U.
I own SFV on PC.
SFV after like 100 patches is now a big meaty game, with loads of content. Most is free too.
I only buy third party games for my gaming PC or Xbox One X. I own PS4, but it's a dust collector due to lack of good exclusives the last 2 years. PS4 for third party games? Hell no. Too outdated hardware
If i want 120 fps in games, i can only buy them for PC of course.
Xbox One X can run some games at 120 fps too as it's the only console on the planet with freesync and have enough GPU power.
Anyways. Mortal Kombat 11 is a easy sell with playable characters like Robocop, Terminator etc.
They’ll continue milking this. There are strong rumors that a Kombat pack 2 is incoming and they might continue supporting this game longer than previous. Only when they are done may a true “komplete edition” be released for all consoles.
@ObsidianEleven Hey, these days I'll take what I can get lol.
@ObsidianEleven I totally feel that. I don't mind throwing out a little extra for things I like as well. The only problem becomes how to sell it, because they can't just print off half a million 90$ copies they aren't sure won't sell. And clearly given the meltdown some people around here have over Limited Run Games, an open preorder period might be frowned down on, especially from a major AAA publisher.
@ObsidianEleven
"will always pay more for something I want."
You (and I) are the minority, the other 95% of Switch users will complain why it is so expensive.
@Dakka-Dakka
Seriously most consoles leave their eshops servers up for years after a console is no longer relevant and by then I have far too many games to play on the current system to care
@Ventilator As for the PS4 exclusives it is a matter of opinion as I think that in the last 2 years God of War and Spider-Man are the BEST games to grace this gaming generation. Absolute NO contest.
Surely not having a physical product in the box doesn't look the best in an age where we're all trying to cut back on waste.
Is this purely a way for publishers to support a retail industry that needs to adapt or am I missing something? ☺️
@Heavyarms55 Because a "physical" game from a retail store can be £40 when it costs £50-60 on the digital shop. If the digital shop was priced better then I would agree with you. I would actually prefer no game card at all than one with some of the game on it because I don't have to switch cards then.
@FredBiletnikoff I've never seen that. Must be a European thing.
@ObsidianEleven I'm the type of person who, if I'm treated right, will always pay more for something I want. If they wanted to charge more because they used a larger cartridgr size, and it was reasonable, I'd do it every single time and not complain about it.
I think this is more common then people like to believe. They now have NIN 64gb carts so why can't they not use that for the price they are charging for a FULL game without any cart. This is the crappola that piaa of buyers. They pull stunts like this an wonder why people go looking for the Original MK that first came out on cart-of which I also own. If what people are saying what they are saying why is KS some are now offering Physical Switch carts and some like LRG, SRRG, SRG and others are making physical carts. That should inform the uninformed that they been feed koolaid up all their orifices.
I'll never understand full game downloads in a empty box. It's like the non alcohol beer of retail games.
I have the game on physical, and the space it occupies after the last update is 27GB. Assuming they used the entire space of the 8GB memory card, we can assume the entire game is roughly 35 GB. Maybe trying to put more of the game on a bigger card would have put a lot of work to reaccomodate what was going to be downloaded and what was going to be in the card.
@Zuljaras I completed Spider-Man on PS4, but it's not as good as Insomniacs Sunset Overdrive. Also. Spider-Man gets tedious and repetitive later on. Far from perfect.
God of War. Played it 2 hours or so,do far. Got put off because of the stupidly long prologue fight which made no sense at all at the ending.
Also not a perfect game.
@Ventilator That is why I said personal opinion.
GoW is game of the year 2018 for a reason.
For me PS has the best exclusives this whole generation by a large margin compared to the others.
But this derails the thread. Let's get back at physical games that should contain the base game fully playable.
@Zuljaras
As for incomplete games on release. Nintendo games works on release, but games like Smash Bros and Mario Maker 2 changed alot since release.
Some third party games on Switch have big patches on release.
Switch have the same major flaw as PS VITA carts.
If a game on a 16.GB flash cart is only 5.GB, but have a 3.GB patch. It saves to SD card instead of game cart.
Same stupidity on VITA.
I have to mention this. Media will never praise any game Microsoft ever make. Nearly all sites is blinded by Sony.
Personally Xbox One had more good exclusives for me this gen than PS4 had and filled more gaps than Sony.
Bayonetta 2 were GOTY contender. It could never win, because it were a Wii U exclusive. A console most of the world hated.
It matters alot on what console brand a game is released on as a exclusive. Sony is the only ones getting a free pass.
I don't mind but atleast put in a book with artwork or a manual, a poster etc. Then it's atleast worth it to get physical without a game card. It's understandable companies finding it expensive especially in these times. But they can do better then just a case with a DL voucher🙄.
You can only get the physical in US, feel special America... Except don't because you just get a box with a piece of paper inside.
@4by3 : Untrue. The Tetris 99 cartridge includes the DLC on the cartridge itself. Similarly, the Rocket League Ultimate Edition cartridge also includes some (not all) of the DLC content on the cartridge, so it is possible for publishers to release cartridges with the DLC without having the content tied to a specific console/NNID.
@Contra_III
I am one of those people who paid over $100 on this game to get all the DLC and the game, all digitally. But my two choices were to spend this much on a game I love or wait a year until they release it all as a $60 package. $40+ to not have to wait a year was a price I was willing to pay.
@Zuljaras
In the year 2018 the following came out:
Spider-Man (PS4)
Monster Hunter World (Xbox One, PS4, PC)
Dead Cells (Everything)
Celeste (Everything)
Red Dead Redemption 2 (Xbox One, PS4)
All of these titles kick the piss out of GoW, GoW was a boring slog that took everything we loved of the series stripped them away for a lame story, with an even lamer "twist". I haven't been that thoroughly disappointed by a game in a long time. So if you are only going on visuals, then yes GoW was game of the year, but if you were annoyed to fight a different colored troll for the 30th time and hear him say boy 6000 times then please play any of the other games I just listed
@Old_Man_Nintendo yeah lets agree to disagree. The first god of war games were just creaming and button mashing. I can't see them EVER going to that formula again.
For me it worked so well. Yes there are recolors of enemies but every damn game has those now. And in GoW it is done so well.
But I agree with Spider-Man. Outstanding game.
@Zuljaras
The original God of War series was different than what existed, many could argue that the first God of War really brought the big over the top spectacle to video games.
God of War 1: Started with you fighting Hydras to get to their Mother who you killed by slamming her head through a broken mast
God of War 2: Started with you going after Zeus and the other Olympians just to get your ass kicked and sent basically to hell
God of War 3: Started with you riding on the back of Gaia as you again were after the Olympians, and you even fight Poseidon in the open scenes
GoW: Starts with you chopping a tree, and getting ready to bury your wife, and talking with your son....
It's a stark difference that the fans of the series were a little irked by. I think you could have made the exact same game, but not loosely tie it the God of War series and I would have been less upset with it
@Old_Man_Nintendo
HEY!! I’m not the only one who thought GoW was overrated! To me it was: grow a beard, have A child and then become super-solemn while seriously regretting past actions and decisions that defined him and the game as a whole!
How relatable; (insert God here) is just like us...RAD!! Also, his son’s not as innocent as we thought?!! Whoa, Super rad, dude.
I purchased a Mortal Kombat 11 aftermath without realizing that it was digital copy only I'm very disappointed with my child opened his birthday present and couldn't find the game for those of us that pick something up today want and not realize that a major company is screwing them kind of something to be said about that nindo sucks is my username because I will never purchase anything from you f****** people again you ripped me off for the only time and the last time I am disgusted... fu Nintendo you suck. Cheap m************...
My username is nindo sucks I have purchased this game for my son's birthday not realizing there was no cartridge in it the blatantly obvious inscription on the front of the box is not that obvious when you buy a console that accepts cartridges can you buy a game expecting a cartridge and the company doesn't give you one you feel really screwed I will never purchase anything from Nintendo again they have ripped me off for the only time and the last time my son opened his birthday present not realizing there was no game in it he almost cried I am very disappointed in this company and I don't think I'll ever forgive you this is just as much your fault for selling the game in conjunction with other games that have cartridges included I do not consider myself at fault for not reading the Box if it's an online-only download then you need to sell it in an online only download category can't put it with the rest of the cartridge games to be sold to an idiot like me
