They're a bit too hard to get in the UK these days but I do want it.
Well worth the digital download of £12 ish, but although it would be great to have physically it's a tad expensive for what you get in my view...
I gotta be honest... For this one in particular, I think I want the digital version.
I have the Nintendo 64 version and played a lot in this days of quarantine.
But is so hard!
😰
Tempting. Expensive, but tempting.
Pff. 60 bucks? I'll pass. A poster and a non-functioning N64 cart are not worth that much.
'no money, no part, no deal'
Some people just want to pollute the earth.
@Menardi I agree, I've stayed away from them so far for this reason, but nostalgia is strong with this one.
Any of them offer wireless local play like they promised?
@vio exactly. £60 for a plastic box and a cartridge that you still need the eshop for (for the updates) is just daft. I was really pleased when I went ‘physical’ with the Witcher, and with Doom but the updates render the initial cartridge purchases pointless.
As nice as the physical editions are, this is a game that honestly hasn't aged that well.
Why why WHY didn’t I wait to see if this would happen?? I just bought it last night. But they really ARE expensive anyway.
@fusermarucs in the past for that price you got the full package.. the game.. a booklet and of course the cover/box. Now you get a download code and no booklet... they already went down with making cost and charging people for the booklet, now it's not there anymore. So that £60 pricetage doesn't make sense at all.. at least put some booklet with colours
@Menardi - LRG has done open preorders for Switch games since the beginning. You usually got 3 weeks and up to 2 months to make an order. So at least that move is something further beyond the constant limit.
The biggest draw of physical games for me comes in the fact that they don’t take up as much storage space, but since this game is just a couple hundred MB, I’m OK saving quite a bit of money buying digital.
@Alucard83 sorry do you not actually get a functioning cartridge in these releases???
I'm not into all that tat/merchandise. Just want a physical cartridge and a manual if possible.
For the reasons posted by those above, they can naff off.
Finally, now I can pay $60 - $90 for a $15 game!
Still waiting for a sale on the digital version, too bad the metal N64 carts don't work
@Menardi While it’s not shown in the graphics, the article notes there is also a standard edition, which are usually $35 on LRG.
$60 for what is essentially just a port of an N64/Dreamcast game. Yeah bundle that game with Star Wars Episode 1: Battle for Naboo, Rogue Squadron, and Shadows of the Empire for the same price and maybe I throw ya the cash.
Rogue Squadron, that would be sweet to have on Switch
Piss poor that they didn’t announce this last week before I and thousands of others had already bought the digital version. Trick me once.. next time I’ll just skip the digital game for a few months to hold out :/
This is a game that’s aged very well and has proved that we don’t get games as good as this very often. Hugely playable. But $60 for a plastic repo cart painted silver. No thanks.
@fusermarucs you do get a real cartridge with these releases. I’m not sure what he’s talking about.
@JSDude1 @fusermarucs He was talking about the fake metal N64 cartridge that comes with this limited edition. It's clearly visible in the pictures, so he was obviously not referring to the Switch cartridge.
@Menardi I agree with everything that you said, better than I could have. I too would love this on physical cart, but my max would be $30-$35, which considering that it’s $15 digital, it being generous. The prices that they are asking here are absurd, given the trinkets that you are getting with it. I feel about Limited Run games the same that I feel about Kickstarter, meaning, I like what they do in theory, but in actuality they are too overpriced for what they offer. And, as you said, they are creating artificial scarcity for these products. I just wish there was another way.
@Cevil I’m so glad that I passed on the Limited Run Streets of Rage 4. I went back and forth until the last minute. It just didn’t feel right and I’m glad I didn’t bc the mass physical copy cover art looks so much better.
I would actually be interested in this for the metal cartridge in the N64 box to put it in just for being but last time I ordered something from them and had it shipped to the UK it never arrived and it took ages to get a refund from them.
You know, it’s kinda interesting how the pendulum swings. When Limited Run first started up, they were praised for bringing physical copies of games that major publishers would otherwise never take the risk of releasing. And now the tide has turned against them for creating artificial scarcity, exorbitantly high pricing, and cheap junk that caters to ocd collectors. I mean on one hand, I suppose it’s basic rules of free market capitalism. But it’s also a lesson that if Limited Run doesn’t change their practices, they may find themselves left behind.
@ThanosReXXX The person clearly said "Now you get a download code and no booklet"
Nice try, though.
@ThanosReXXX Ok, thanks.
@Menardi btw I forgot to mention this, and I’m sure you know, but just in case...Yooka is still available liberally at Best Buy for $50...which is still too high of an entry price for me, but certainly less expensive that what you mentioned.
I'd be impressed if the game was actually a remake, but it's just a port of the PC version with the higher resolution textures, almost virtual console worthy, so a physical version doesn't seem justifiably right.
@Doktor-Mandrake Ah, my bad. Having an off-day. Normally, I don't make assumptions based upon other people's comments. Oh, well...
@JSDude1 cheers: my point still stands though that a physical cartridge is now nigh on pointless when updates over the eshop add enhancements and functionality. You can buy this cartridge but it won’t have multiplayer for example..
Jesus Christmas $60 for the standard edition?? I’ll pass!! That’s ridiculous LR!
WAIT... the standard edition pricing isn’t mentioned...will wait and see.
@retro_player_77 well said! A package deal would justify the $60 ...hard pass for me
No thanks, I've learned my lesson. I still don't know when LRG is gonna send me my copy of Shantae and the Seven Sirens and the Shantae plush I ordered with it. I'd rather pay $15 and get to play it immediately, rather than be overcharged and then wait 2-4 months after the fact to play it.
@Ks123 I think most people actually realised what they were doing last year when they released all the Nintendo Star Wars games on cartridges that were more expensive than it was to pick an original copy up. People would have understood if it was games that had limited print runs in the first place but not games that sold millions of copies and were easy to pick up.
@fusermarucs better this or what you described than an all digital release, imho.
Wow. $45 extra for a hunk of plastic and an over-glorified paper weight. What a waste of money.
@BANJO Honestly though? 12 pounds for that game?
-I bought doom for $7 Canadian just now, and ori and the xxxx for $2,50 on steam.
I guess I'm the only one who thinks they didn't do anything worth deserving that kind of money. No swanky new textures etc, and still change more then $10 is nuts.
Glad this exists, but $60 is way too pricey for my cheapo self.
Maybe this is scalpers bait. Let them buy it and lose money trying to resell them.
In seriousness, I am happy for any collector that wants this and picks this up.
I’d rather spend this amount of money on a real retro game or two.
I appreciate what LRG do, and I buy physical where possible, but I just can’t justify paying their prices + international postage + import duty for games that are simply not worth it.
I really wanted to get a physical copy the new Shantae game, but the moment I saw it was exclusive to LRG I thought no thanks, if I have to buy digitally I’ll simply wait for a sale and buy it dirt cheap instead.
I'd probably drop 20 bucks on it, but 60 is insanity.
@OdnetninAges thinking the same thing.
Highway robbery and you get not much in return. Switch version doesn't have Steelcase nor coins or Pins what gives LRG?
@Menardi But most of their standard editions do cost less than $35. $30 is the average. There isn't a price posted yet for Racer's standard edition, but I doubt it will be over $35.
@JasmineDragon There won't be a 'standard edition'. Collectors are the only people who will be interested in a physical version. They know that.
I’ve bought this game five times already.
I have the first 30 or so limited run games. But when they bumped up the shipping costs to Canada I just couldn’t justify the price I was paying anymore. I did play a bunch of amazing games I would have never tried otherwise though.
People are getting way too worked up about this. These prices are for the silly collector's editions which are usually grossly overpriced and come with a bunch of stupid trinkets (how I wish they would sell soundtracks separate, but they don't always afford the option). There will be a cheaper case+card only version available as well.
My only gripe is that ordering such games now is quite expensive due to the poor value of the Aussie dollar.
I ordered the Space Invaders Collection yesterday (the standard edition as opposed to the two more expensive versions) and it's going to cost me about AU$110 with shipping, which is pretty absurdly overpriced for what it is (though money is usually no object when it comes to these sorts of releases, though I wouldn't pay through the teeth for the fancy-pants collector's editions). Taito really should have issued their own wider retail release and I'm sure that it would have sold in healthy numbers at a more reasonable price.
@Menardi i actually did i little rant this weekened where i wanted to buy the Metal Slug XX on LRG but only 3000 or so were available and sold out so fast.. which also is a Neo Geo issue too. But my argument is if you cannot or are not allowed to manufacture enough then dont bother with it because like you said it makes it artificially rare and makes it harder for collectors as it encourages scalpers
I ordered my first LRG product 3 months ago with Panzer Dragoon.
What's the average wait on these?
@Maulbert They had standard editions for Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy, not to mention almost every other game they sell. Why do you think this game will be any different?
Question:
Can I put the circuit board from the original into this non working metal looking N64 case and play it? Does it even open? Is it just silver plastic?
I stopped using Limited Run after the first game I got from them. I got River City Girls and realized afterwards it will be worth bucks unopened in the future so I shouldn't open it. So I never played it and that sucks. I collect to play but it appears that would be stupid. So no more LRG for me.
@MoebiusFactor
It will be months later.
I waited on buying digitally because I suspected this announcement would be coming. I'll be pre-ordering for sure.
@Maulbert every release always have a standard copy thats just the regular case and game. they always done this. its the only version that gets a open 4 week preorder
@mesome713 Like how some people want to risk losing their purchases when the servers eventually shut.
Well a standard physical for me please.
Postage from Limited Run is crazy for UK, but I just have to have it
Not sure if it will happen...
But for Turok, you get one at Best Buy for $30.
Mind you, that was just the Switch game physical.
I will be getting it for $60. I know some people think it is expensive, but Limited Run does collector style physical editions and it is really not targeted toward the average normal consumer. The way i see it is you get the metal cartridge (which is cool even if it is non-functioning, the reversible poster, the nice little retro inspired box and the physical copy of the game. For collectors and the physical media enthusiast, it is worth it. Same debate goes on with downloadable music versus getting the premium 180 gram Vinyl Records. Some of us just enjoy having something that is tangible and can’t be “revoked” because said company wants to take it off their server. Still trying to figure out how I can backup my Wii Virtual Console games and thus far, everything seems to be a real pain with that.
I'll probably snag the standard physical copy. Loved playing this game with my brothers as a child so this will be a fun nostalgia trip!
The standard edition is only $29.99!
@BANJO it actually starts at $29.99
@GamerDad66 there is a standard for this for $29.99 as well!
@Chris77 There is a $29.99 version!
@Menardi there is a $29.99 version
@LimitedRunDoug I'd talked myself out of the $60 edition, but $30 puts it back in the aisle of temptation.
@LimitedRunDoug Well that's certainly a better price... Thank you for the information..
@Menardi Are you in the US? If so, Best Buy has the physical version of Yooka-Laylee on the Switch for 49.99.
