Re: Review: Capcom Fighting Collection 2 (Switch) - A Cracking Collection Of Top-Class Arcade Fighters

1040STF

@Vyacheslav333 Well, Double Upper has two flaws:

  • The versus mode needs two PSPs. That PSP port is coded to only accept inputs from one human player in versus mode. It relies on another console to get the informations for the second character, like it's an AI in some way. The game is not made to receive prompts from two human players. So just for that, Capcom would need to reprogram most of the game from scratch, which feels hard and inconvenient.
  • The extra characters always felt out of place, like a rom hack. They feel like they were just copy/pasted here, like all the roster is in Capcom Fighting Evolution (from the same era). Even on a technical and artistic level, you can feel all their sprites are from other games. Yun, Maki and Eagle are copy/pasted from Capcom VS SNK2, and Ingrid from Capcom Fighting Evolution.
I like that version, don't get me wrong.
But any time I fight one of those 4 characters, it feels so wrong. Like a rom hack.

For most players, SFA3Max (or SFZ3 Upper) is the real deal. Well balanced and 100% coherent with itself.

Re: Random: What Is This, A Game Boy For Ants?

@GamingFan4Lyf I want also to compliment the Zoolander reference. One of the funniest gag I have ever seen in a movie.

"But Derek..."
"It needs to be at least.... three times bigger !!"
"...He's ... right !?!..."

I know so many of its dialogues by heart ❤️

Re: Remember The Brawler64 Controller? It's Now Available Without A Wire

1040STF

If (and only if) the controller is great, I think 50$ is worth it.

I remember being hesitant to take the Genesis/Megadrive controller "Joyzz" made by Krikzz, at 50$ (in sale 😅).
I finally bought it as every review was extremly positiv.

It's now my #1 goto controller for my Megadrive AND most of the MiSTer cores (Megadrive, Arcade, Neo Geo, Master System, Nes, ...). It's such a perfect controller 🤤

Re: Astral Chain Is Now Fully Owned By Nintendo, Says PlatinumGames

1040STF

It really looks like PlatinumGames is a rough studio.

  • Rough game engines often not very well optimized.
  • Rough IPs that come and go.
  • Rough collaborations that come and go (GrandBlue, Scalebound, Astral Chain)

And yet, they have such an energy, ideas and wild desires that it's still one of the most fascinating to follow today.

Re: Feature: Switch Puts The Arcade Of Your Dreams In The Palm Of Your Hand

1040STF

@OorWullie Most people don't notice lag.

But lag raises the difficulty of the game nonetheless, making them less enjoyable than there were supposed to be.

As arcade games are made to be difficult by asking a lot of responsiveness from the player (to make him insert more coins), lag becomes a real issue if there's a lot. Even if you don't notice it.

Luckily, Switch in handheld mode has practically zero lag.
You really can enjoy old arcade games on it, as it was intended to.

Re: Feature: Switch Puts The Arcade Of Your Dreams In The Palm Of Your Hand

1040STF

@WaveWitch Tough question. The lag on Switch a big topic.

In handheld mode, with joy-con attached, I don't feel any lag and I'm very sensitiv to lag over 10ms.
It's a big surprise for me. I'm not a handheld gamer neither, like you, but I have to admit this configuration is awesome.

With a Pro Controller, you'll have more lag. It's a bad wireless controller for lag, far more than the PS4 (which is good) and X1 (good too).

With a wired Pro Controller... turns out you'll have even more lag because the freaking Switch's dock adds a lot of it !

To answer your question honestly, the best place today to play arcade games if you're not a handheld gamer enthusiast, is on a MiSTer FPGA linked on to CRT. It's an amazing device with zero lag.

I got a MiSTer FPGA for Christmas... and finally, I found back the feeling of the arcades in the 90's. It's awesome. Really. I own a PS5 and I found out myself playing more with the MiSTer than the PS5 those holidays 😅

Re: Feature: Switch Puts The Arcade Of Your Dreams In The Palm Of Your Hand

1040STF

@WaveWitch Input lag is the lowest on Switch in handheld mode.

No developers back in the day imagined that those games would be played with input lag in the future.
And so, difficulty for most of those games is based on responsiveness.

It's so important in arcade games that it makes the Switch the best official place to play arcade games, by far. In handheld mode.

Re: Feature: Switch Puts The Arcade Of Your Dreams In The Palm Of Your Hand

1040STF

It should be added that Switch in handheld mode has the lowest input lag of all consoles, by far.

OK it's emulation and so it adds input lag. But far less than when played docked or on PS4/5 or Xbox consoles.

And just for that, the Switch is a wonder. And it's the best place to enjoy retro games that asks for precision, like arcade games. (best place is still the MiSTer but it's a little less official 😅).

Re: Ye Gods! Kratos From God Of War Comes To The Switch, Via Fortnite

1040STF

@Entrr_username Kinda disagree with that.

Fortnite is seen as a marketing tool today.
Putting Kratos on it is an advertisement for Sony on other plateforms.
It's clever.

It's exactly the same logic Nintendo has with its mobile games : create an ad to get people buy the real game its propietary hardware.

Samus in Fortnite on Playstation and XBox would perfectly follow this logic too.

Re: Review: Control: Ultimate Edition - A Highly Convincing Proof-Of-Concept For Cloud Gaming On Switch

1040STF

Tried it. Responsivness is incredible for a cloud game.
But it looks like a Youtube video, full of compression.

Believe me people : it's not the same game as the Xbox One X version, which was visually fascinating.
This cloud technology ruins the game visually.

But it's a great technology for less demanding games... which is paradoxal because those ones could run natively on a switch. So, even if I'm impress with the responsivness, I'm still thinking of cloud gaming for now "What's the point ?" 🤷‍♂️

Re: Super Mario 3D All-Stars Has Reportedly Leaked Onto The Internet Already

1040STF

@Antraxx777 Of course my TV is in Game Mode. And you're right, it changes eveything. I'm very sensitiv to lag over 10-12ms. Under, I almost don't feel it.

I discovered that by buying a 61ms input lag TV (in Game Mode !!) : after 6-8 months, I didn't have any more pleasure to play video games. Out of nowhere, I decided to plug my PS4 on a PC monitor and the result was striking. I understood I was sensible to lag to an extent I didn't imagine. I made a lot of tests after on 2ms, 10ms, 13ms and 21ms input lag screens. And a CRT.

Since then I have a 21ms input lag Oled screen and a PVM (Professional CRT). And I got back for a few weeks my 11ms Plasma from the basement to compare.
As I'm a huge retrogamer enthusiast, I can see the difference :

  • Switch on my Oled has a big input lag. I feel it A LOT.
  • PS4 & Xbox One have input lag, not as big as Switch, but it exist and I feel it very much
  • PS4 and Xbox One on my 11ms Plasma have a very reduced input lag. It's cool.
  • Megadrive or Snes or any old analog console on my Oled through an OSSC (that add zero input lag) has a tiny input lag. I can feel it but it's far more bearable than PS4, X1 and especially Switch.
  • Switch in portable mode has almost no Input lag. The difference with docked is incredible
  • Analog consoles like Megadrive, Snes, on a CRT, have zero input lag. It feels for me like it felt while playing as a kid.
  • PS3 on a CRT has very low input lag I think. I tried briefly on my old CRT, while I wasn't that deep into input lag measurements. I haven't test it since I got a PVM but I intend to.

And Raspberry Pi have the worst inout lag ever. I can't play anymore on Recalbox or Retropie. I have to check RGB-Pi though, which is known for its very low input lag.
But I'm more tempted to try MiSter Fpga...

I can't wait to play on Xbox Series X as they announce "ultra-low latency" (nothing as such announced yet on PS5 :/ )
I can't wait to play at 120Hz too : it divides input lag by two !
And I plan to buy a new OLED 11ms screen : in 120fps, the input lag will go down to 5ms !

Re: Street Fighter Producer Yoshinori Ono Reminds Fans He's Leaving Capcom Soon

1040STF

I like the guy, really, but sorry, I think the Street Fighter saga will be better without him.

It's notorious that his take on SF4 (first main entry he produced) was not good and saved by Capcom by another producer (don't remember the name) before the release of its first entry and giving birth to the game we loved.
THEN he took the reigns on SF4 and, sorry, but some additions to the next SF4's entries are ... strange.

Then he produced Street X Tekken, an abomination.

Then he produced Street Fighter V who has a lot of qualities (some graphic designs, some musics, the gameplay as a whole) and an awful lot of problems (like the lack of general fun, lack of life in the graphics especially the backgrounds, lack of life in the animations or sound effects or even in the menus, and the general "plastic look").

Bring another producer to the Street Fighter saga.
One that has faith, good taste and the energy to resurrect what made Street Fighter once a great game. I want to have as fun on SF6 as I had on SF3 or SFZ3.

Re: Rumour: Nintendo Is Reportedly Asking Switch Developers To Make Their Games 4K-Ready

1040STF

@Stremon The Switch is gonna be 4 years old in a few months. It is more than possible that a new model can deliver 4K, especially with DLSS. Easy.

In 3 years we went from PS4 to PS4 Pro.
In 4 years we went from Xbox One to Xbox One X or from Wii U to Switch.
Or even from PS1 to Dreamcast

It's more than possible.

And the portable technology from Nvidia at the centre of the Switch can do miracles. Remember the end of 2016 when people were saying "no way the Switch will be more powerful than a Wii U as it's a portable !". Result : 1080p vs 720p for most ports, better framerates and more details in graphics.

Re: PSP Prinny Platformers Slide To Switch This October

1040STF

Erf... Graphics looks very blurry, like a bad scale of the PSP games.

I can see that on the screenshots.
I can see that on the last trailer too.

If the final game looks like that, it sucks hard 😕

I wish it had been re-drawned to fit the 1080p resolution of the Switch.

Re: Feature: 10 Of The Most Blatant Snack Sponsorships In Retro Gaming History

1040STF

Fun fact about Cool Spot : another game named "FIDO DIDO" was ready to ship on Megadrive/Genesis when suddenly 7up decided to change its mascot and canceled the game.

The Fido Dido game was never officially released but pirate copies got in the market immediatly. So many that people sometimes think it was really released. You can find those copies easily on ebay.

Re: No, Zelda: Breath Of The Wild 2's Voice Work Isn't Complete

1040STF

@inenai It totally depends.

They need the game "build" (not finished !) just to see if the game works. Then you record actors, because they are not cheap.
Then you finish the game (including lips sync).

Then again, method can vary between developpers.

But the process you describe is more for animation movies, where actors are recorded after the storyboard is complete.

Re: Random: 8BitDo's Xbox Cloud Gaming Controller Sure Looks Familiar

1040STF

I've stop buying 8bitdo stuff for two reasons :

  • Too much controversy goes with the d-pad, that starts to make awful noises after a few months of daily use. Too many users are pissed by that, whatever the model.
    (exemple : https://twitter.com/ModernVintageG/status/1259583714838929408)
  • It's a bluetooth pad and 8bitdo's bluetooth pads have a pretty ***** input lag (21ms for the M30)

It's a beautiful pad and I guess it feels great in hands.
But I'll pass on that one.

Re: Rumour: Zelda: Breath Of The Wild 2 Voice Actors Say Their Work Is Complete

1040STF

It means the script is 100% complete.
It means the structure of the game is maybe 85% done (they can change parts that don't depend on the script)
And as they didn't need the voices to build the game BUT they needed to build the game to see if it works before recording the voices ... they are indeed very advanced in the game.

Last variables that are hard to mesure are :

  • where they are in the level designs of the dungeons (no need for dialog scripts here)
  • and maybe the structure of the paths to go from one point to another on the map. Which can be a huuuuge deal. But as in BOTW, you never get bored because the topography of the world is kinda "written", it might be completed too. But it's hard to be sure.

Anyway. They are more to the end that to the beginning of building the game. And that's huge news.

Re: GC Loader Ditches The GameCube's DVD Drive So You Can Run Games From An SD Card

1040STF

@TG16_IS_BAE Totally agree with you. Replacing the disc drive with a SD or DD reader is a far better solution than the PolyMega. It's as simple as a game in its original form VS emulation.

You have similar solutions for Megadrive/Genesis, Super Nes, Nes, Master System, GB, GBC, GBA, Game Gear, ... it's called "Everdrive".
They are the creation since a decade of Krikzz, an ukrainian little genius. Every retrogamer loves his products !
And for the record, he did also built the best wireless controller for Genesis : the Joyzz. It's far better than an 8bitdo product
