It's the final Nintendo Download Update of the year, and as expected we have a couple of Virtual Console releases and no 'new' downloads - the New 3DS gets another SNES title, while the Wii U get some classic kart racing. Let's get to it.
Missed the European Nintendo Download details? Don't fret, they're right here.
Wii U Virtual Console
Mario Kart 64 (Nintendo, $9.99) - Super Mario Kart is rightly acclaimed, but its sequel joined a number of other N64-era releases with a special new weapon: four player matches. Like many N64 titles it boasted of early polygon-based visuals, and to this day is much loved for some of its iconic courses and it's different feel to more modern entries. You can read our most recent recommendation in our Mario Kart 64 review.
New Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console
Castlevania: Dracula X (Konami, $7.99) — The SNES port of the PC Engine's Castlevania: Rondo of Blood makes its way to the portable. It doesn't stand up to many of its series contemporaries, in our opinion, as we explain in our Castlevania: Dracula X review.
3DS HOME Themes
Pokémon New Partner
Pokémon Full-power Z-Moves
As always Nintendo of America is keen for you to browse the eShop and this official website for discounts; games with a reduced price this week include Just Dance 2017, Runbow and Teslagrad. You can also see a big breakdown of festive discounts right here.
That's the line-up for the final Nintendo Download Update in North America this year. Let us know what you plan to download in the poll and comments below.

MK64! Does it feature the Memory Pak for ghost data?
So America has it as bad as us Europeans as well.
@allav866 Nope
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Nah, I'm expecting "Pokémon Partner" or whatever is going to be fire; most downloads ever on the eShop, even though it's a theme.
(To be honest though, this week was so bad I lol'd)
Once again; my wait for Bomberman 94' continues.
The fact that we get MK64 makes me hopeful for Pokémon Snap in the future.
@ThomasBW84 Mario Kart 64 is $9.99, not $8.99. 😉
MK64??
Surely every man & his dog will already have this via the Wii Virtual console if they wanted it
I'm gonna make a positive comment.
What a great week
Anything added to that big sale?
@C-Olimar Not a deal breaker, especially since I only have to pay $2. I first played this on the Wii VC, so it would've been nice to try the feature, but I'm not gonna lose any sleep over it. :/
This week is awful. Where's Legends? Nintendo either needs to fix it so older models can play SNES games or remember there's other games besides SNES.
Don't forget there are many more sales going on than what is listed (which is none!) 267 to be exact and that includes the Capcom sale.
@Lizuka Hopefully we don't have to wait that long for F-Zero X and Super Smash Bros.
I want F-Zero X to come to NA.
Come on NOA catch up already! NOE already released Pokémon Snap, Star Fox 64, F Zero X and Mario vs Donkey Kong. It
Ok, so now I can hope Super Smash Bros. comes next week. That's the last Wii-only N64 game on my console.
sighs Been wanting to pick up Mario Kart 64, but is it really worth it if I'm just gonna have to pay for it again on Switch?
I have Mario Kart 64 on my Wii data, so I am willing to pay 2 dollars for the Wii U version.
Whoah. This is a pretty sad wee🙁k
Mario Kart 64 alone doesn't make this week terrible for me.
@LegendOfPokemon Ah, righto, it said $8.99 on the official site which did seem weird!
@GameOtaku "Nintendo needs to fix it so older models can play SNES games"
The Old 3DS isn't powerful enough to accurately emulate SNES games.
I have $10 burning a hole in the eShop.
@OneBagTravel Dude, that's like, 10 RCMADIAX games.
Yay Mario Kart! Just need Star Fox 64 and Smash Bros. added and I've got all of my Wii VC N64 games transferred.
Still not paying a cent for SNES games on 3DS with no cross buy.
I may pay the $2 to update my Wii copy of MK64 to the WiiU version though... how's the emulation?
Finally I can play MK 64 without going into Wii mode
@majinx07 Dude, my wait for Bomberman 64 is much, much worse.
What a light week.
Still not showing up for me in the eshop
@Mega_Yarn_Poochy
Yes they could optimize the VC for it. It's totally a cash grab at this point since that's the only VC they are focusing on. It'd be different if they said "yeah it's a bummer old models can't , but we will still support older models with Gameboy, NES, Gamegear and coming soon tg16."
@allav866 It's Nintendo, the never emulated it at all, when unofficial software emulated it for years =/
@sazae Nintendo updates the eshop at 9am PST/12pm EST, that's why it isn't showing up yet.
Buy games on sale on the eshop. Help out the good indy games so they support Switch.
Not like the AAA devs will after year 1.
@DiscoGentleman I think at this point I might even pay full retail price for a Bomberman 64 re-release, just so I can play it on my HD TV without having to hook up or mod my N64. THAT's how much I love that game.
No wonder why the Wii U died.
Welp let's hope that when the switch comes out, it will have loads of VC and other goodies to get right away....or at least, have the most expected VC out right away.
Is it even worth the $2. I know about off screen and the fact that you don't have to use the vWii to launch but isn't the visual quality actually worse. Can you continue to use the Wii version after upgrade?
I don't have MK64 but I have a few games still on my original Wii. I never did a system transfer because for n64 games I prefer the gcn controller and any of the older system games look better on my Wii hooked up to a nice 24" CRT in 240p than they would on my flat screen. And actually the 2 n64 games I have, star fox and Mario 64 look better on my n64 with svideo. I didn't have the crt when I bought starfox and I didn't own Mario 64 before buying it on the Virtual Console.
Nothing remotely interesting to me. At least Europe got some New Year sales.
@Undead_Terror The Wii U is not dead, it's undead, cuz........uuuhhhhhhhh, more games will come to it still, or at the very least, some MOAR modes will come to some games, just without the e ;3
MK64! Finally! Been waiting for months for it to come to NA!
Nothing for me this week, just waiting for Zelda Breath of the Wild to hit the Wii U, because I am not going to be picking up the Switch for at least a couple of years.
@eSocrates The Wii versions still work after you upgrade on Wii U, so no worries there. And I have to agree, the Wii VC games definitely looked better. Their Wii U counterparts are darker and far less vibrant...
@thesilverbrick @eSocrates
I never transferred my Wii VC games to Wii u. I'm really glad I never did.
@Mart1ndo I took the plunge and upgraded all my games just to have them more accessible and to be able to play off-screen. Was it a waste of money? Probably, but I'm a sucker for complete libraries. Plus my Wii VC games are still there, so in the case of games like Ocarina of Time, now I've got three extra save files, so there's that...
Ugh, all those SNES games, and they release this?
Hallelujah, downloading MK64 when I get home!
@eSocrates I wouldn't transfer my games over to the Wii U if you like using the gamecube controller to play them, because if you do you will not be-able to use the gamecube controller on them even in wii mode. Also on your wii console they will disappear from it when doing the transfer to the wii mode on your wii u console.
@Not_Soos Well leaks seem to suggest upgrade fee for Wii U to Switch so if you own on Wii VC but not upgraded to Wii U VC you'd have to buy the game full price again on Switch.
Swapping back and forth between Mario Maker and Ace Attorney Trilogy over here.
Big N could have had some solid sales (ie more than 20% off) to make kids part with their fresh christmas money but instead... this? Not great.
Does anyone knows how's the analog stick deadzone in this MK64 version? Is that bad as it is in FZero?
@thesilverbrick
Does a Wii VC game that you upgrade also stay on the Wii?
@BispoSnake
As far as I know it's been fixed with an update for F zero x
@Marios-love-child I know its hard to believe but some people skipped the Wii. MK64 will be an excellent addition to my VC library.
@Mart1ndo when you do a system transfer from the Wii to the Wii U any games that transfer are no longer on the Wii. I believe you have to do the system transfer to be eligible for the discounted price. So both the original Virtual console version that you have to access through the virtual Wii menu and the new eshop release would be on the Wii U. Your Wii would have nothing on it.
Sometimes I think in order to be a Nintendo fan I gotta buy the same 5 games on every system and then wait for the new system so I can buy them again.
Very weak week!!! I love Mariokart, but have no desire to relive the old ones, given how great the new ones are.
I think it's funny how people seem to imply that Dracula X for SNES was bad. Not as good as Castlevania 4 or the PC Engine CD original version to be sure, but certainly not a bad game for what it is.
@Priceless_Spork
Well if it's only 5 games you gotta rebuy then that's not bad at all.
I've got like 230 VC games. But I don't plan on re-buying them. Just the top five
@eSocrates
Thanks. I just wasn't sure there for a minute. 😊
@Priceless_Spork
This may not be the popular thing to say, but I'm very satisfied with the breath and scope of VC from Nintendo. I mean, as I just mentioned I own hundreds of games. NES, SNES, N64, Wii, GBA, DS, TG16... it's the ultimate collection aside from GameCube being MIA and Sega platforms (though I'm pleased with the 3D Classics range on 3DS). I'm just surprised it took them so long to release some of the more highly desired games (just now got Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon a few weeks ago, and just now getting Mario Kart 64 in the run up to Switch? It's so... odd).
It looks like we'll be getting GC virtual console on Switch day one. Having Metroid Prime and F-Zero GX on a handheld device has been my dream for the better part of 10 to 15 years. Fire Emblem Path of Radiance too? Oh man that's gonna be it. Those three games on handheld and I'll die a happy man
@Grumblevolcano "Well leaks seem to suggest upgrade fee for Wii U to Switch so if you own on Wii VC but not upgraded to Wii U VC you'd have to buy the game full price again on Switch."
Source?
Again. Nintendo MUST release switch with a stable full of virtual console releases ready for download. Also. I would pay monthly for a Netflix style VC!
@Danrenfroe2016 no. they must trickle it. to release hundreds of VC games on one day would be suicide to all but the 10 or so most well known VC games. obscure games would get zero sales if that happens.
If they had 3DIzed DraculaX I would buy it. But my playing days of that title are over. I played it, owned it back in the day. I think 3Dized backgrounds would look sweet. There are so many games from the old days that would look awesome with the treatment
@IronMan28 Laura Kate Dale AMA, she also says in the AMA that Nintendo fans are going to be very disappointed with the VC lineup for Switch.
All I want is Pokemon Snap. That's all. I don't want anything else. I won't complain about any updates or the price. Just give me Pokemon Snap.
@manu0 it's surely a way to slow of a trickle, I do think they could do it staggered but they need to release where there is literally like a hundred VC releases available within the first 6 months, and what I would love is if they actually did a subscription service where you can pay per month and have access to all of them.
Castlevania!!!!!
@Mart1ndo You will still have two copies of the game, but they're on the same system. One is on the Wii U proper and the other is accessible on the Wii through Wii mode.
Not sure what the holdup is on some missing N64 oldies. Maybe rights? I'd pay extra for Rogue Squadron.
@DiscoGentleman Even though I'm one of the few lucky people who owns a copy of The Second Attack!, I'm still annoyed it isn't on Wii/Wii U yet. Imagine being the poor guy who's always wanted to play it ever since VC was announced, but just can't.
@thesilverbrick
Thanks. I didn't actually know that. So I could have the pal version and the US version on the same console.
Way to close the year haha. January 12th can't come soon enough.
Castlevania: Dracula X in Europe!!!
what a crap way to end the year on the nintendo eShop
@Grumblevolcano Honestly, I don't have high hopes for the VC out of the gate anyway. Yes, it's disappointing that Nintendo doesn't have it together on that front, but it's pointless to worry so much. Either way, sucks that we'll have to pay to upgrade again for the Switch version of VC games.
I love Mario Kart 64 and would've bought it for the Wii U, but not being able to use GameCube controllers on Wii U Virtual Console for N64, despite them having an adaptor, is a total FAIL on Nintendo's part. I'm glad I never transferred my purchases from my Wii to my Wii U, my friends and I prefer to play the VC of Kart 64 with GameCube controllers. Really stupid on Nintendo's part to not allow any game but SSB to use the GameCube controller adaptor on Wii U - really, really stupid move on their part.
