Bayonetta 2 isn't even out yet, but poor old Hideki Kamiya is already being forced to think possible sequels. Speaking to 4Gamers, he was asked about creating games based on existing IPs, and gave the following reply:
I don’t really have a problem with making sequels. Above all, I want to make games that are fun. This is the most important thing for me. So next to new IP’s, I also like to make sequels. The point you’re making however, is very good. With the first title of a new franchise, there are so many good ideas, so many things you want to do. Unfortunately, you can’t use all of them in the game. In the sequel, you can use cancelled ideas from the first game. I do have the feeling most of those ideas are used when you reach the third game though and that developers only make a third game because the fans want it. That’s why I don’t really see a Bayonetta 3 happening in the future. I am fortunate that I am able to create many games from scratch.
Next, Kamiya was asked about the chances of him creating a sequel to fan favourite Okami, which he made when he was with Capcom:
That question gets asked a lot and its something gamers clearly want, so if I am able to, I will definitely make it. But gamers want so many sequels, I don’t even know where to begin.
Are you one of the many people who would like to see a Kamiya-created sequel to Okami, or were you holding out for the Bayonetta series to continue after the second instalment? Drop a comment to share your feelings.

Would prefer a brand new IP over either. I love Okami, but it doesn't need a sequel. I like that I can give someone that and say 'Play this, it's one of the best games ever made', rather than have to give them a big pile of games to get the full picture.
Okami, please and thank you!
MadWorld sequel first then give them the Hobbit licence. Let them make a decent multplayer hack'n'slash adventure like the LotR games EA made.
Gamers want sequels...then complain about getting sequels. Gamers get new IPs, then don't buy them...
I would love to play an Okami 3 1 & 2 were soooo amazing I'd love to revisit that world again!
Bayonetta 3 may not happen is something I don't want to hear. I will be sure to pick up Bayonetta 2, but I gotta get a Wii U first obviously.
YES PLEASE! I would love to see Okami on the WiiU, the system is perfect for it!
I loved Okami for the Wii so a sequel would be fantastic!
This is a problem all fans struggle with. Do I want something completely new and unfamiliar or do I want the same thing and what I know how to play? The problem with the latter is there can be minimum effort or does not rise to the fans expectations. The problem with new things however is that you don't know if you will enjoy it or not. This is why (from what I hear) Wonderful 101 is probably failing in sales right now cause even I'll admit that even though I'm interested in that game, tons of other games like pokemon x and y, sonic lost world, mario kart, etc are coming out and I want to buy those more for being familiar fun.
Most gamers, especially the ones that call themselves "true gamers" or "hardcore gamers" really don't know what they want. Anything that strays from the norm are looked down on and ridiculed or are greeted with confusion. They ridicule amazing games like Wind Waker but get in line for "Generic shooting game 53" sometime called Call of Duty.
I love getting my hands on quality titles and especially love a new IP. I'm really excited to find out what Shigeru Miyamoto has been working on lately. The god of gaming doesn't let us down.
I need both a new Okami sequel and a new Viewtiful Joe. It's being forever since I've play a VJ game and the last one for DS was awesome. Definitely need one for the Wii U or 3DS.
okami and wii u go hand in hand like. Id even take a straight port of the hd remake with some gamepad integration for the drawing stuff.
id prefer an okami 3 tho, love that series.
Lets get Bayonetta 1 on Wii U first before we start talking sequels
@Big_L91 okami 3? there's only been one as far as i know
@Warruz agreed
I'm totally fine with this. Kamiya seems to do a great job rigging little nods and shoutouts to his older works in his new IPs, so it's not like Bayonetta or any of his other titles will just die off. Plus, the dude is really good at handling new IPs. I'm excited for whatever he plans to make next.
Yes please, but who will fund an Okami sequel these days?
I love Okami but I rather have him make a new IP.
@bitemykite
Okamiden for DS is technically Okami 2. Made by Capcom, not by Clover or Platinum Games.
Most of PG games are new IPs, except for Bayo and Anarchy Reigns.
I'll like an Okami title for the 3ds
Yes okami on Wii U would ACTUALLY make sense! Would love that!
People really need to stop pestering devs with making sequels...
Even Wonderful 101, shortly after its release, got flooded via Miiverse that it needs a sequel. Why run a perfectly finde one shor game dry already ? Enjoy it to its fullest first and THEN we can start wishing for a sequel.
I dont want any of these fantastic titles to become the next assassins creed with countless unnecessary spinoffs and half years sequels that get more bland with any incarnation.
W101 wasnt made because people wanted it, it was made because THEY wanted to make it. And it turned out fantastic. Devs need way more freedom and crative games may rise again. But with constantly rising market and profit preassure and on top of that, a fanbase that keeps on pestering the devs, i dont have that much hope
That reminds me. Shigeru Miyamoto's new IP! Cool.
Anyway, I haven't played any Okami at all, so I'm not sure 'bout this.

I really like what he said here. Sequels are meant to wrap up story points introduced in the first installment and use any ideas that couldn't be done in the original. If you've felt like you've done all you could do, then it's time to let it go.
@ScroogeMcLz: Internet high five
I love that the know when to stop. When devs make too many sequels, games start to lose their magic.
(Bayonetta is so hot )
I would love to see a Okami sequel for the Wii U, the system is literally built for Okami's celestial brush!
Still dreaming about the sequel of the best game ever.
It doesn't necessarily have to be the same IP, but I would love to see another game like Okami.
It pains me that there aren't more big 3D adventure games out there in the vein of Zelda and the like.
Gamers begged Nintendo for a new IP.
Nintendo delivers Wonderful 101, Nintendo fans don't buy it.
I don't know anymore. Nintendo "Fans" are too hard to please.... I'm baffled why developers like Kamiya just dont give up because you will never please anyone let alone everyone.
@Peach64
I agree. Had to spend so much on freakin' COD.
@ScroogeMcLz +1. So true. While sequelising something is alright (as long as such sequel is on par or even better than their prequels), there is need to always bring new IPs (once again, as long as such new IP is really good): they give the market some room among the typical yearly sequels. But as you said, why people complain about getting so many sequels if sometimes they don't help on making these IPs successful by buying 'em?
BTW, if what Mr Kamiya says about Nintendo letting 'em have all sorts of development freedom is true, very good indeed. Platinum Games is a valuable Japanese developer to take seriously in mind. =)
I honestly have been craving another Viewtiful Joe game. That would be awesome if he did that again.
I would kill for a new Okami.
Okami for Wii U makes such perfect sense.
@Banker-Style Hear, hear!
I definitely agree with him. A sequel is a great way to wrap up anything storywise and to use any scrapped ideas from the first game. Third game, that's just milking it (unless it was originally conceived that way).
I don't quite understand the demand for another Okami game, unless it was to take the Legend of Zelda route and make every sequel narratively unconnected. The first game was perfectly enclosed and stands just fine by itself.
More than B3 or O2 though, I'd rather the first Bayonetta be ported to Wii U for consistency.
This industry is weird...
The biggest complaint levelled is the lack of originality in games and yet whenever a developer does an interview 50% of the damn questions are "Will we see a sequel to ___" I mean come on especially a man like Kamiya who rarely does sequels for a myriad of reasons either they won't get published (See Bayonetta 2 prior to Nintendo) or as he stated their is simply nothing to new to add to the franchise.
Look at the Uncharted series great games I own all 3 on PS3 but... if I were to play through them one after the other I'd be bored out of my mind it's the exact same gameplay over and over again.
Nintendo takes a different approach if I sat down and played all 4 of the main 3D mario games, 64, Sunshine, Galaxy 1 and 2 each has enough innovation and freshness to feel different to me and thus I'm less likely to get bored.
I can see Bayonetta2 flopping especially after W101 which was suited towards the Wii U, i think PG needs to do what thay want.
After playing Wonderful 101 I don't care what Kamiya, or Platinum Games in general, will do next.
Loved Okami, loved W101, a sequel do them? I'm on it!
New IP from the people who made those games? I'm on it too! ^o^
Ack... Didn't play Bayonetta 1, but after W101 I'm way more interested to consider to play Bayonetta 2 when it will come out.
I just want to play great games, being them new things or sequels I trust the developpers since the awesome experiences I was able to play thanks to their creativity ^_^
Okami definitely fits the Wii U perfectly. But I equally want a Madworld sequel on Wii U. I want both very very much. I'd love to see Jack -just Jack- or a new protagonist weild a sawn-off shotgun. If it's not too effective over a distance and packs limited ammo, it could greatly add to the ultra-violence and overall gameplay.
I would be interested to see an Okami sequel, especially on the Wii U.
The minority of gamers who frequent sites want new IPs.
The majority of gamers that don't post their opinions want sequels.
Hence the COD, Halo, Madden, AssCreed and all the other monthly installment.
We are the minority folks. We just don't want to admit.
I'd prefer new IPs, even though all those games are great and would make for great sequels. The reason is, very few people in this industry are willing to take the risk of creating brand new games from scratch. And of those that are willing, even fewer are able to create something really special.
Kamiya is the ONLY person besides Miamoto that I see having the Midas touch. Seriously- everything the guy makes is gold (or platinum, should I say?). I don't even have to read a review to know it, either. All I need to know is Kamiya made the game, and I'll shell out $60 for a pre order. You don't ask for sequels from a guy like that. Not from Kamiya. You want him working on as many new IPs as he can from now until the day he retires. He's only got so many games in him before he's done.
@XCWarrior
Unfortunately, you're right. And The Wonderful 101 is evidence of that fact. We have been clamoring for a new Nintendo IP, and we got more than we bargained for with W101- just a downright glorious, amazing game. And then I read the sales numbers... For now until evermore, when a person complains about wanting new IPs, I'm going to point them to Wonderful 101. I'll say "There's your new IP. The one no one bought."
If it is an Okami game I hope it is not for portable system because it would be more beautiful if it is being played with big screen.
Sequel or Spin-off for Okami, still the game I want more than any other to have a confirmed sequel in the making.
if we ain't going to get Bayonetta 3 how about a WiiU version of the first Bayonetta....please...pretty please
yeah it makes it awkward to be saying you dont plan on making a sequel to bayonetta2 which i understand but at the same time the game hasnt come out yet and you kinda already making it sound bad in some sense its not like new ideas never come to mind or places were you could continue the story for the game
but i kinda agree bringing the first game to wii u would be interesting as well and im sure ppl would be ok with that.... as for W101 i think we just need to support it or just simply post a comment on miiverse, facebook etc telling your opinion on the game or how good it looks so ppl will see its a new IP which ppl been wanting
I wonder which systems he would release Okami 2. Wii U and PS3 Most Likely
May depend on Bayonetta 2 sales on Wii U
Well, I would love to see an Okami sequel hit the Wii U (if it was released on Wii U that is). I loved exploring every single inch of the first game's world, and it also helps that the game had a phenomenal soundtrack to back itself up. Having good music brings the atmosphere of games to life for me.
@Dpullam
Same here!
A new Okami game would be great. But i'll only purchase it if it comes to Wii U
@JaxonH I made this realization in the Wii ear, shocked no one on the internet has really figured it out.
Wii U is a good gamer's systems because Nintendo is courting Indy devs who will give us new IPs. Just not sure if there are enough gamers out there to make it profitable.
I WANT A SEQUEL SO BAD FOR OKAMI!!! I don't count Okamiden, sure it's a cute game but I want the heart break that I got when I finished okami! I still cry every time because the ending is so beautiful and sad! Not to mention, we get to see the celestial plane but never get to go there! I think the sequal should be of Amy getting to restore the celestial plane, getting to learn more about the moon tribe, and maybe even getting to go on a few adventures with her pup before he's sent to Nepon. Okami is the best game ever and I wish that we hadn't just been left hanging at the end of it.
I also wouldn't mind a more in depth look into Nepon 100 years before, I mean we were told that there was some issues before that caused the village to not trust Shiranui, why? Why were they so scared of him? I would love to learn about all of this, and to actually get to play it X3 If there is like a sign up for those who want this sequel I would also LOVE to learn about it and hope someone could email me about it
