Re: Video: The History Of Nintendo's Game & Watch Range

yas

Takes me back. I remember loads of kids had Game&Watch games at school. They seemed so sophisticated! Also at around the same time there was a Casio calculator game. Numbers came at you from the right, and you had to eliminate them by pressing one key to increment your number on the left, then pressing another key to "kill" them. Astonishing how many hours I sunk into that one. Oh, it was also a "synthesizer". You could play tunes although nobody did that. Or did maths. About five of us had it just for the numbers game!

Re: Poll: How Do You Feel About 'Limited-Time' Games From Nintendo?

yas

Yeah, storm in a teacup. I seem to remember Luigi U was another limited run game (the year of Luigi - whatever that was). But they sold millions. Then it popped up again in the budget Select range. Then was ported to the Switch! Somehow, I think Super Mario 3D All-stars will be easy enough to get hold of, even after the limited time is up.

Re: Review: Invisible, Inc. Nintendo Switch Edition - Beautifully Accessible Turn-Based Tactics

yas

@NotoriousWhiz Lots of reasons. Personally, I sold my Switch because they were going for ridiculous prices on eBay. Got £420 for the old-battery model, which made sense because I don't currently have the time to play it. But in six months time that could change. Also, might pass my digital library on to my son. Seems a shame to waste it. So, for the above reasons, always on the lookout for ultra-cheap game sales. But as mentioned above, can only purchase physical at the moment.

Re: Review: Invisible, Inc. Nintendo Switch Edition - Beautifully Accessible Turn-Based Tactics

yas

@JimmySpades Disagree. Whatever the law might change to in the future (and it's not guaranteed) at the present it is different. Personally I buy lots of physical games, not because I'm any sort of collector, but because if I don't like the game, or by some miracle finish it, I can resell and plough the money back into a new game. I suspect many people are the same as me. I do buy digital games, but only those evergreen ones (NSMBU, MK8, etc.) that I know I'll want for years.
There is also a more subtle difference which I didn't mention on my initial post - that is, I can buy a physical game for me or a friend whenever I want to take advantage of sale prices, however when I find myself temporarily Switch-less (like now) I cannot buy the digital game. Very small difference, but nevertheless, another difference between physical and digital. They are really only the same if you look at 0 and 1s internally. The whole "product" that surrounds them is very different. Although the manufacturers would have you believe otherwise.

Re: UK Retailers Guilty Of Inflating Nintendo Switch Prices As Stock Remains Elusive

yas

Very easy to point fingers at Game. And they are an awful company. But honestly does anyone think they are sitting in their bank vaults, chuckling demonically while counting the cash? No, they are slowly going bust. They are just trying to stave that off as long as possible. As others have said, we as customers either pay the prices or not. It's up to you.

Re: The Outer Worlds Publisher Reveals Performance And Resolution Of The Switch Version

yas

@Friendly No, I meant "target" as meaning not guaranteed to get there.
@Razer According to pretty much every review, XCDE looks and plays great. Resolution isn't everything. Lots of games have pin-sharp resolution yet not much in the way of graphical effects. Personally I'd rather have smooth animation, graphical effects but with lower resolution. Not saying XCDE has all of this - not actually played it yet, but will withhold judgement until I do.

Re: Early Tech Analysis Of Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition Reveals Frame Rate And Resolution

yas

@Jeronan My point was that people were playing at 200p or 240p without moaning about it. Now twice the resolution is a problem?

Also, pretty sure you're wrong about the original running at a higher resolution. Thought the Wii was 480p. Which means 504p-720p on the Switch is better. No?

Obviously, you can't compare Wii Console output with Switch handheld output. That would be silly!

Re: Early Tech Analysis Of Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition Reveals Frame Rate And Resolution

yas

@Northwind Good points. I also find some 3D (as in polygons, not the stereoscopic effect!) 3DS games unplayable now I've spent time with the Switch. But at the same time some 720p games can look better than 1080p games. Depends on the animations used, the effects applied, etc. I guess we'll only know when we've got the game in front of us. Can't really tell from a YouTube video!

Re: Random: Someone's Transformed Their Animal Crossing Island Into Danny DeVito, As You Do

yas

@Quix Slang - a type of language consisting of words and phrases that are regarded as very informal, are more common in speech than writing, and are typically restricted to a particular context or group of people.

So, "as you do" is a phrase, it's very informal, it's more common in speech than writing, it's restricted to a group of people - not sure which group, let's say the English for argument's sake. So how exactly is it not slang?!

I suppose it might better be described as an idiom, or maybe irony, if you want to get technical.

Re: Nintendo Switch Is 'Barely In The Middle' Of Its Life Cycle

yas

Pointless comparing Switch lifecycle with consoles, better to compare with handhelds. And thanks to Nintendo's policy of backwards compatibility (apart from Switch release!) the lifecycle will be at least 10 years. I expect a future Switch 2 or Switch Pro to be fully compatible with all Switch games. So by my reckoning we've still got at least a couple of years until mid cycle!

Re: Here Are The Top Ten Best-Selling Nintendo Switch Games As Of March 2020

yas

@ItsOKToBeOK "Remember at the beginning of the Switch’s life cycle, people complained there were no games?"

I remember at the beginning, when it was first released, people were saying Switch was dead in the water. A silly gimmick that wouldn't sell. Ha! I knew it would do well if only as Nintendo's next generation of handheld. Even 3 years ago the 3DS was getting a bit long in the tooth and looking primitive.

Mind you, I also thought the WiiU would be successful. So what do I know!

Re: Nintendo Earned Almost $2 Billion In Digital Sales This Year, A 72% Yearly Increase

yas

@mesome713 "Digital is the best, it's good for the environment. Save the world Nintendo, we can do it."

Is it really? I'd really like to see some proper figures comparing the carbon footprint (or however you want to measure it) of a one-off physical release of, say, 1 million units, against the on-going costs of hosting the digital game in power hungry data centres. Would be an interesting comparison.

It's a shame that these days physical releases are no more than a "pass" to download the game, what with their constant patches and DLC. Would be nice to get cartridges with the finished game on them. Oh well...

Re: Seven Classic NES Titles Just Appeared On The Switch eShop

yas

@Dethmunk I think you missed my point. Take my own favourite, Super Mario World on the SNES. Leave it as an on-line perk, but offer it for permanent sale at say £/$5. I would buy it. Yes, short term it would be more expensive for me. I would also purchase such things as Pokemon Emerald, Fire Emblem and Advance Wars GBA games if they ever get round to releasing them. More money for Nintendo. So why don't they do it? These extra games could also be available as part of the on-line subscription service. The two aren't mutually exclusive.

Someone else mentioned difficulty in getting the rights. Well, they already have the rights for all the NES and SNES games already on the online subscription. Why don't they also offer them for permanent sale?

I think Nintendo are missing a trick here. There's a lot of demand for the older games, and it surely can't take much effort to get them up and running? I can only presume it's a business decision, but the logic of which I can't fathom.

Re: Seven Classic NES Titles Just Appeared On The Switch eShop

yas

Not sure why we can't have the Nintendo back catalogue available to buy instead of with the online subscription only. I for one would buy some SNES games, as well as GBA, GC, etc. yet to be released. I understand they are trying to make the online subscription more desirable, but another revenue stream (the old VC) wouldn't hurt surely? Unfortunately the above seven games hold no nostalgic value for me.

Re: Guide: 8 Steps To Making Your Gaming Backlog A Thing Of The Past

yas

Of course, for those people with a digital only collection, selling their games is not an option.

I find the best way to limit a backlog is to limit yourself to buying only two games a month. If you strictly adhere to this, it really focuses yourself to think what games it is you really want.
