Nintendo of Europe has shared a list of the most-downloaded Switch eShop games during July 2020. Animal Crossing: New Horizons can usually be found at the very top of these lists, but it's actually been knocked down to second place this time around.
Instead, Nintendo's latest major release, Paper Mario: The Origami King, takes top spot. It joins a chart full of Nintendo-published games, continued success for Minecraft, and a fair few indies that are well worth your time.
You can check out the full list below. It's based on the number of Nintendo eShop downloads (so no physical sales) in European territories during the whole month:
- Paper Mario: The Origami King
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons
- Minecraft
- Minecraft Dungeons
- 51 Worldwide Games
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town
- Stardew Valley
- Cuphead
- Crysis Remastered
- Pokémon Sword
- SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated
- Super Mario Party
- Carrion
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
We also recently shared our July 2020 edition of the Nintendo Life eShop Selects - our list of the very best eShop games that launched last month.
Did you download any of these titles on Switch last month? Any surprises in the top 15? Tell us below.

Carrion has done well to slither into the top 15 given its release date. Pretty good list.
Considering Mario Kart and Animal Crossing sell so many copies physically every week around Europe to be so high in digital sales as well is crazy!
I'm 100% digital on Switch.
No need for useless lumps of plastic.
Green, efficient and all I need is my Switch at hand for my entire library.
What is it about Minecraft that keeps us going and buying it on every platform!?
I've been playing that game for years on survival (never bothered with creative mode) and only now am I close to beating the Ender Dragon!
Am I I terrible at the game? I don't think so - I think it's that the game keeps distracting you with some silly little task or goal to achieve, so it's so hard to keep your eyes on the end goal.
But I'm staying on the mission now - because I want to be 'done' with the game.
The suprise would be if Paper Mario: The Origami King could not make the top spot in the month it was released. What it does show is that folk downloaded more 'other' games than Paper Mario: The Origami King. 🤔
@geordie Paper Mario: The Origami King is not my favourite game, I was disappointed with it.
BUT, my 'useless lump of plastic' should return me at least 50% of my original outlay. Those digital gamers who were also less than pleased with the game may wish they had gone for a, maybe not so useless lump of plastic'.😀
@zool ^^ This
Strong digital launch for Paper Mario and Carrion.
Breath of the Wild is still in the top 15, let's go.
Glad to see such a fantastic game still going strong.
I have downloaded 11 of those 15 titles on the Switch! Two of the other ones is wishlisted.
Woah they just accumulate, don't they?
All solid gaming as well
That's pretty excellent for Paper Mario, considering in the UK it released to better physical numbers than the previous best seller SPM.
So for it to also top the Digital chart as well it's well it's got to have some extremely solid numbers. It might end up selling more than 4 million like the Wii game.
When they release the August list in early September, it will be pretty funny to see All-Star Fruit Racing up at the top.
Man this reads almost the same as every month for over a year.
@geordie
Growing up with books has instilled in me a passion for collecting a "library" of my hobbies. From tea sets, books and art books to my favorite games, I enjoy collecting physical tokens and mementos of things that I love. Quality box art alone is worth paying for the physical copies in my opinion.
Plus, like @zool mentioned, you will have more control over your games after Nintendo has moved on to another console generation, either for resale or for keepsakes. Digital storefronts are too fickle, reserving the right to remove the game from your digital library at any time for any reason, with no explanation or recourse since you have already agreed to give over your rights by purchasing in the first place.
Three months after launch, ACNH is still going strong. I am so happy with this game. 😊
@Ulysses love your avatar: great game!
Where's Xenoblade?
Seriously, I don't understand its low sales. It gets praised at almost any gaming website and most fans agree this is the best of the franchise. XC2 sold very well, so why aren't those sales impacting XCDE?
Don't tell me XC2 only sold well because of the waifus. That would be really sad.
@Shulkalot probably most people interested in the game already played it back in the day (like me), and so we don't plan to spend full price for this xD. Specially since it's not a game to enjoy fully on handheld.
When it's on sale, someday, I bet it will sell better. (Either then, or if they ever release an upgrade improving the visuals in portable mode, which I don't think it'll happen).
@brunojenso I couldn't tell you, I had my fill of it in about half an hour.
Where are these mass quantities of people that are still buying Minecraft?
I love that no matter what, there is a constant stream of people buying Minecraft. I’m pleased to say I am not one of them, though!
@Shulkalot JRPGs have almost never sold well enough to beat more mainstream games, with a few rare exceptions. They are definitely a niche genre.
@brunojenso I feel this way about Terraria. Once that splitscreen update comes through, I'll be buying it (for the 3rd time) on the Switch.
@Yodalovesu Children who just turned 8. Every year, millions of children turn 8, and immediately buy Minecraft.
@geordie Not to mention, if you have a significant other, best friend or family member with a Switch, it's an easy way to share games when you're all digital.
@Shulkalot Xenoblade has three things working against it. A handful of hyped games came out in the month and a half since it released. Global pandemic has some people conserving cash and not buying every game they want. And no matter how beloved the game is, it's still a remaster of a game many people already played.
Also, this is sales date from July. It was in the sales data from previous months. No matter how you slice it, too, JRPGs are more niche and aren't going to outsell most other genres.
@Deltath @TG16_IS_BAE
It's true that JRPGs are still quite niche, but some franchises in the genre do quite well.
Sure, Xenoblade was released on Wii and 3DS, but even on those consoles it didn't sell well. I just hoped that the increased popularity for the franchise since XC2 would result in higher sales for XCDE.
@Shulkalot There's no reason to assume it hasn't. This isn't numerical sales data. It's just placing. At the end of the next quarter, Nintendo will release specifics.
@Shulkalot It’s because all us old-timers remembered being burned by Xenogears, so we don’t trust the name-brand anymore lmao
