Arc System Works has just casually dropped seven NES games on the Switch eShop (as well as other digital storefronts).
The games are all part of the company's Double Dragon & Kunio-kun Retro Brawler Bundle, but thanks to these new releases, you can purchase the titles individually at €4.99 / $4.99 / £4.49 each.
The games available are:
- Double Dragon
- Double Dragon II: The Revenge
- Double Dragon III
- Crash'n the Boys Street Challenge
- Super Dodge Ball
- River City Ransom
- Renegade
Will you be picking any of these up? Let us know with a comment.

These just feel kinda unneeded
I was really hoping Super Double Dragon would be in this announcement. That's all I want, damnit.
I think I'll just rather get the bundle collection but it's here for those who only want one or two of them.
Not sure why we can't have the Nintendo back catalogue available to buy instead of with the online subscription only. I for one would buy some SNES games, as well as GBA, GC, etc. yet to be released. I understand they are trying to make the online subscription more desirable, but another revenue stream (the old VC) wouldn't hurt surely? Unfortunately the above seven games hold no nostalgic value for me.
Isn't RCR already on the nes collection?
At these pricetags i'd rather buy that bundle to be honest.
@Yas
Most likley because a lot of the old studios went under and nobody knows who holds the ip's these days.
or the IP holders are not interested.
@Crockin They're all on the collection, as is stated in the news item
I really want the Gauntlet series from the nes
If it was the Arcade versions, maybe....
I kinda like it. Since I bought the Japanese Kunio-Kun: The World Classics collection WAY before they've announced that they would translate all the Japanese exclusive Kunio-Kun games, it means that maybe they will release individually release the others games too (not just the american one), and the only one I'll be interrested in translated form would be that Edo era style River City Ransom. I could just buy that one, and be happy with my japanese collection and not double-dip.
@Yas the old VC would kick the Switch into high gear. It’s ridiculous for Nintendo to hold their back catalogue hostage to their sub-par online service.
@KitsuneNight @Yas I think there’s also the problem that a lot of publishers have realised that they can easily just release the games themselves and charge more money knowing it’ll still sell well.
@Damo *NSO collection I mean.
@Dethmunk at this point it's pretty good value if you want all the staples. Online functionality still sucks, but I've gotten a ton of mileage out of those games
Keep giving us NES games Nintendo, no one plays them. There are so many SNES games that should be released, those have replay value. I guess, it'll be okay if this fall N64 comes to the Switch. If it doesn't, that'd be a joke. I don't know if I will pay for this service, I received a year free, thanks to Prime, my online subscription is up at the end of May.
I'd prefer a long overdue port of Double Dragon NEON
Wake me up when SNES games are added.
@biglittlejake These titles have been added to the Eshop as individual releases, not Switch Online. I initially thought that too.
Nintendo you can take all my money when you finally give us game cube games. I'd love to revisit them without hassle
This is the video game equivalent of what is happening with Netflix. Everyone at first was happy just to get a piece of the pie, then they had delusions that they could manage the whole thing by themselves to get the whole pie. Now with 200 choices, no one is happy because no one place has everything you really want and most only have one thing worthwhile (and not worth a subscription).
These nes titles dont interest me tbh but it's nice to see some kinda alternative to the lack of VC
@Dethmunk certainly true if you want all the titles on there. But if you only wanted 1 or 2, paying $4-$5 sounds much better.
@Dethmunk
Yeah but you don't get those games. You rent them. I could buy only the games I wanted on vc and own them and not give them up in a years time. It's very puzzling especially since not everyone plays online games so myself I don't see any point in a sub if I'm literally not getting anything out of it. Heck it's even a ripoff, I bought 2 seperate month subs and I only ended up with a month of actual play time with the nes/snes games due to the check in policy.
@OorWullie
My bad. Thanks for the info. I guess I need more coffee as it said that in the title.
Man I wish they would do a physical release of bundles like these.
Yet another confirmation that we will never see the return of retro games on the Switch like we had with the Virtual Console.
@Crockin Double Dragon 1 and 2, Super Dodge Ball, and River City Ransom are on the NSO app.
@KitsuneNight And major publishers are often reluctant to revisit properties they own but which were developed by a separate studio. For example, Square Enix owns the rights to Quintet's SNES games, but they haven't done anything with them since ActRaiser came to the Wii Virtual Console.
@Crockin Some of these separate releases, like the Double Dragon/River City collection, have the "quality up" improvements from the collection. That includes reduced lag (slowdown) and no flicker, which is really great for Super Dodge Ball. NSO has the "authentic" experience (a.k.a. performs like oatmeal) if you prefer.
@sleepinglion : Me too. I've been yearning for that for years.
Hell, I'd take a PC port.
But I'm not paying for that pathetic joke called Double Dragon "IV".
@Darknyht Exactly this in my view... I don't want multiple subs to get something I want from each.... One place, one price!!
If only that could be the case...
@Dethmunk I think you missed my point. Take my own favourite, Super Mario World on the SNES. Leave it as an on-line perk, but offer it for permanent sale at say £/$5. I would buy it. Yes, short term it would be more expensive for me. I would also purchase such things as Pokemon Emerald, Fire Emblem and Advance Wars GBA games if they ever get round to releasing them. More money for Nintendo. So why don't they do it? These extra games could also be available as part of the on-line subscription service. The two aren't mutually exclusive.
Someone else mentioned difficulty in getting the rights. Well, they already have the rights for all the NES and SNES games already on the online subscription. Why don't they also offer them for permanent sale?
I think Nintendo are missing a trick here. There's a lot of demand for the older games, and it surely can't take much effort to get them up and running? I can only presume it's a business decision, but the logic of which I can't fathom.
I never thought I’d say it, but that’s more expensive than Virtual Console NES games lol
@Yas I think Nintendo either hit a big slump in sales of retro games via eShop/vc, or they've seen that people are less and less likely to pay for an individual game twice. In any case, tgey have those numbers and are adjusting the business model. Obviously it's complete capitalist BS, but people are buying in so that's the way it's gonna be. Nintendo leaves the consumer in The cold pretty often in this way they are selling switches through animal crossing restrictions. The software is generally so good that people will pay any price and they know it. I buy in all the time, but I wish they'd be better about this kind of stuff
Some of those are already on the Subscription Nintendo games with online play. I’ll have to pass.
@electrolite77 you may already know this but I know a few of them have the arcade version on the eshop as part of the Arcade Archives series.
Cool I grabbed double dragon 3
@Vriess Not sure what you mean? This is exactly the same thing as virtual console. Its retro titles you can buy 1 at a time, and keep forever. Are you just upset they didnt put a virtual billboard up that says “virtual console”?
You're better off purchasing the Kunio-kun & Double Dragon Collection, unless you really REALLY want just one or two games out of the collection. I suppose this is for those folks who'd rather not play these games for "free" through NSO NES?
N64 games please hope that’s later in the year x x x x x
I like the DD games and RCR is basically the same but they are pricing these way too high. The bundle is too expensive as well for a download. I bought the Genesis classics cart for $20.00 at Target and it has over 50 games, most are quality titles and the emulation is spot on.
@Coalescence that would be SNES games. This is about nes games. Although I would love to have it also. Have them all for my nes and snes. Ill buy these though. The support could work I to another o e being made.
@FragRed
Urgh sadly.
Or the bundles versions aren't a port but emulation.
Super dodge ball would cool if you could play online.
Speaking of which, it's been well past two months since the last Switch Online NES/SNES update.
Let me know when Rare Replay is coming to the Switch.
@kingbk
Never going to happen.
Unless Nintendo stuns MS with vast vast wads of money.
And if you had any doubts this was a cheap cash in, just look at the achievements on XBONE.
You get 500g just for option settings in Double Dragon. OPTION SETTINGS.
@mrmememan definitely a must have for me. I already own all these for my nes but will buy for my switch.
Well I'll buy the kunio bundle though. It's the same price pretty much with more games than if I bought all these separately
I have em all on my NES mini already.
Maybe double dragon III
@Silly_G I believe it's on Steam
I disagree with the majority. I like the a la carte option. I have good memories of playing Double Dragon III on the NES with my dad, but don't have any interest in most of the others. Glad I don't have to pay $40 to relive the fond memories found in one game. I like having the option to get them as a collection, or buy them separately.
Money grab, it should have been a NES collection of 10 titles.
@RumblePak : Options are good. I only wanted the physical cartridge for the Double Dragon trilogy, so I'm quite happy with it, but I don't think people should have to pay $60 or so if they're only interested in a few games in the package.
@sleepinglion : Yes, it is, but I prefer to buy smaller-scale PC games via GOG.
Several of those games are already in the NSO. I know NES and SNES NSO selection feels barren and collections like these are probably to blame (why would Square allow Secret of Mana or Chrono Trigger or Dragon Quest in there if it can sell it to people again by themselves?). But this is literally doubling up on what's already there. I guess it's good for people who don't want NSO but still want those?
@Yas yeah ive been wishing that the NSO games would be available to purchase individually for a while purely because i dont want them tied behind an online app.
The switch also being a handheld is the main reason i was hoping for the idea of the VC to be expanded upon, especially given that nintendo have had an account system for a while now, so it could allow purchases to carry across other potential future devices kind of like the psone games on ps3/psp/vita
The only game I only want, and really want, out of the collection is Double Dragon 3. If it were 1-2 dollars cheaper, I would have grabbed this quickly. I wonder if DD3 will make its way to NSO eventually?
@Silly_G Gotcha. Understandable
Keep the river City Ransom train rolling with new games and rereleases in the past 6 months. Someone needs money.
@sleepinglion The Switch has no Achievement system, so it would have to be implemented, so you can get that satisfying achievement when you hear Skullmageddon sing "Here's a Medal for your Victory... (Achievement Unlocked: Victory)... To remind you of what you did to me!" But THAT ball would have to fall in WayForward's court.
@Damo No no, I'm pretty sure they meant Nintendo's online service. Double Dragon, DD II, and River City Ransom are on there. Super Dodgeball is on the SNES Online catalogue.
@shonenjump86
Thanks for reminding me. It’s time I got some Arcade Double Dragon on my Switch 👍
Im gonna wait for a couple more generations to buy these.
@Crockin Right!
