Nintendo has announced that it won't be attending this year's Tokyo Game Show, scheduled to take place from 30th September.
The company has taken to social media to share the news with fans. A Google translation of the tweet below reads, "Nintendo will not exhibit booths or game titles at the 'TOKYO GAME SHOW 2021 ONLINE' to be held from September 30, 2021. We will only cooperate in exhibiting indie games from other companies."
Companies that are attending the event include Xbox, Capcom, Bandai Namco, Sega, Konami, 505 Games, and Square Enix, the latter of which will be showing off the highly-anticipated Switch exclusive Project Triangle Strategy.
While it's a bit of a shame that Nintendo won't have its own official presence during this year's TGS, it's worth remembering that the company will no doubt hold its own video showcase – yes, we're talking about a Direct – in its own time. Historically, September has been a good month for Directs, so it wouldn't be surprising if a presentation is currently in the works.

Of Course, as they have no NEW games (except Metroid)
They are seriously lagging, its as if we are back in the Wii U days, at least we have Indies and other companies who are creating games
@Bunkerneath yes, exactly like the WiiU days except, you know, massive success and all that.
You do realize we don't need "NEW" games every single day of the week, Switch has more than enough games already smh
@CodyMKW,
Exactly, and from the perspective of potential Switch owners, there are tonnes of games.
@Bunkerneath Dying Light, Ni no Kuni 2 and SMT5, probability of Pillars of Eternity 2... indeed, at least we have indies. And it's not like Nintendo itself has over half a dozen releases until the end of the year.
To be fair, there’s no point competing with Xbox in an event like this. Microsoft has such a vice-like grip on the Japanese market that Nintendo couldn’t turn up without being massively overshadowed.
Give us a Nintendo Direct, then!
@Maxz ooh, a sarcasm detector...that's a really useful invention! explodes
@johnvboy @CodyMKW true but a new Mario Kart, F Zero or Pikmin wouldnt go amiss.
If we have a Direct this month then there is no reason for them to attend. If we don't get a Direct soon then they are really struggling.
I really hope this next Nintendo Direct is better than the last one. I couldn't believe how weak Nintendo's E3 Direct was compared to past Directs.
I'm sure there will be Nintendo Direct during this month after PlayStation Direct on next week.
Have they ever promoted their games at the Tokyo show?
Attending? It's not even a live event right?
Good, no more buggy and awful anime ports to announce
Pretty sure Nintendo had something against Tokyo that they tend to avoid going there. Then again Nintendo already could make their own expo at any time so it really doesn't matter. They could present stuffs at their own time and pace.
so I guess the maintenance of Monolith Soft´s webside did not mean the coming of Xenoblade Chronicles 3
Yikes. How boring. At one point Nintendo will need to start developing games for their next platform. Can’t imagine Swirch has more juice in it after another 2 years. COVID may have killed development sooner than expected.
I don’t really expect much from them beyond, Pokémon, breath of the wild 2 and Metroid. I wouldn’t be surprised if the new Prime was pushed to a dual release. Bayonetta 3 whenever I guess. Sounds like Platinum is waiting for Nintendo to make a move within release date more than anything.
I would give them a pass because of the pandemic, but this behavior of paltry releases happens all the time.
Oh hai Mario Golf and a new Smash fighter. I should be all set for 3-4 months 🙄 Sometimes I wonder if they’re leaning into indie too much, as a way to pad content for the system. Too bad majority of its garbage.
I’ll be honest, after the E3 event, I don’t necessarily feel like I need a Direct at the moment. First time since 2019 where I feel like Nintendo’s booked a good release schedule for the year. Got 8 games preordered for 2021 on the Switch alone (and 4 on PS5), so I’m pretty happy with the output. If we had a Direct giving us an outline of 2022, that’s what I’d like.
Nintendo spent so much time and money on their theme park, only for it to be ruined by Covid-19. All that effort could have been spent on making new games.
@NoTinderLife
They already had the budget of making new games. Super Nintendo World was extra, if anything.
@ModdedInkling I am talking about time, it cannot be bought by money. Nintendo wasted so much time and effort on an empty theme park.
@Bunkerneath Warioware get it together, metroid dread, shin megami tensei v, pokemon legends Arceus...
Friendly reminder that Nintendo not revolving around your specific tastes in gaming doesn't mean it's not releasing new games, thank god it has variety and doesn't rely solely on mario and zelda.
of course Nintendo is not atending Tokyo Game Show 2021, they have a Nintendo Direct planed for this month.
@NoTinderLife
They have an entirely separate team working on the theme park, plus all of Universal parks working on it. They couldn't get their game development teams off their job for Super Nintendo World.
@LUIGITORNADO Did you check how many exclusives are coming in the next 4 months? Like it’s the most in the final four months since the Switch came to life.
Nintendo never joins the Tokyo Game Show.
@Specter_of-the_OLED
After nixing their SpaceWorld expo I’d say their expo days are likely over. Nintendo Directs are so much more cost efficient and effective and they reach millions of ppl. It’d be cool if they did return with a live event expo but I can’t foresee it, especially in the new world order that is Covid-19
when was the last time Nintendo was at TGS if ever?
@Bunkerneath ...what are you on about?
Let's please remember that this is the normal for Nintendo.
They've quite rarely had a booth of their own at Tokyo Game Show.
@Pokester99 "a game a month or two is nothing demanding."
Now you just have to tell us which company actually manages to do that.
I don't know any.
Including third party, sure, but Nintendo has plenty of that this year as well.
@Bunkerneath what ‘s warioware to you? Pokemon legends? Splatoon 3? Zelda?
And Mario Party, Advance Wars, Pokemon Diamond and Pearl are all not new games to you? And what about 2nd or 3d party games such as SMTV, Triangle Strategy and Mario+Rabbids?
@Bunkerneath
"Of Course, as they have no NEW games (except Metroid)"
Oh, there are a lot of upcoming Nintendo Switch such as Epic Chef, Kitaria Fables, Big Rumble Boxing: Creed Champions, Pokemon Brilliant Diamond / Shining Pearl, Model Debut 2 #Nicola, The Smurf: Mission Vileaf, etc.
Nintendo spent the entire year’s budget on turning Yoshi’s nose into an underwhelming melon-flavoured bread and that’s why we won’t get any more video games to play for the rest of this year.
@Pokester99 Lots of great games coming out at a decent pace. Switch doesn't need a new game from Nintendo every month of the year, let along every 2 or so months.
I remember waiting in the early N64 release lulls and yeah, those were actually complaint worthy. So glad I had a PSX and Saturn that featured more varied and better (IMO, double so for fighting, 2D action, and RPGs) games to compliment my N64 games.
So sit back relax and enjoy some great games coming out soon. I have Wario Ware, Cruis N Blast, and Metroid coming within the month alongside my LRG preorders.
@Kirgo Lol what? I have never seen a current gen console only get a game every month or two including third party EVER. Not even the Wii U had that little support. If you're going to make a counter argument, make sure it's not even more outlandish than what you're contesting. 😑
Edit: Well nice snipe-edit there...😂
@TowaHerschel7
As I wrote, with third party games yes.
But first party, every month?
How many games is Sony actually releasing each year? If not for 3d party they would have had 1 new exclusive this year so far (ratchet and clank). With Zero on the …. Horizon.
@Bunkerneath In the next five months Nintendo is releasing Warioware, 2d Metroid, Mario Party, Pokemon gen 4 remakes, Advance Wars, Big Brain Academy, and Pokemon Arceus. Their release line up couldn't possibly be more packed.
@CactusMan,
The amount of people on various sites suggesting Switch sales will fall of a cliff are baffling me, or is it some hope they will go into decline.
Haha wauw Nintendo, if it cant get any worse.
Now i am even more happy with my pre order for the steam Deck.
@Bunkerneath pokemon, Wario ware, Metroid, and very likely two more Zeldas? I dunno man…sounds decent to me.
I understand the disappointment regarding Nintendo not showing up for this event - I do think it could be a good opportunity for one or two announcements.
Still, the display of excessive bad faith in comments like those of @Bunkerneath and specially @LUIGITORNADO is kind of baffling.
@BrazillianCara Nintendo have never been on Tokyo Game Show, but people make a big deal out of it every year anyway.
Not sure what it means that Nintendo did E3 but not TGS. Nintendo and Sony seem to be becoming in lock-step with their communications and policy. Expos were the one thing left Nintendo did that was actually better than Sony's disappearance from them, and now Nintendo's copying that, too. Hopefully they'll still do E3 next year.
Why are people upset about this? We already have big releases every month for the rest of the year, plus we already know a good amount of heavy hitters for next year, which we almost never know about this early.
@NEStalgia Nintendo always do E3 and they never do TGS. I'm not sure why you thought this year was going to be any different.
@Deepdoop called NintenDoomed fandom....
@Kanbolara Oh, that's good news. For some reason I thought they did do TGS. I never really follow TGS, but I thought this was a change to the norm. The story framed it that way.
@BrazillianCara every comment section has a grouch, we have about 40-50 on this site. The ratio of negative posts to positive posts from @LUIGITORNADO is only about 2359-1. So not as bad as some.
I honestly thought some of the comments about Nintendo having nothing to show were sarcasm. I don't blame anyone for having a personal favorite game they want to see, but if anything, there's arguably too many games. Of some of the genres theres:
RPG's: Pokemon BD/SP and Shin Megami Tensei V for anyone interested in a different monster catcher
Racing: Cruis'n Blast, which looks like it has a lot of content and is filling a genre that's been pretty lacking in variety (barring Mario Kart)
Metroidvania: Metroid itself obviously, the first brand new title to the series in years focused on the core 2D gameplay (if you ignore Samus Returns)
Turn-Based Strategy: The Advance Wars remakes, which have confirmed online multiplayer to boot
Party games: Mario Party Superstar is not only a collection of the old games that made the series what it is, but it's also going to have online gameplay at launch.
Bite Size Games: I wasn't really sure how to categorize these two, but they're similar on a basic level. Big Brain Academy and Wario Ware have couch co-op and some very limited online features, while being games that have traditionally done well as single player experiences centered around mini games.
That's eight games coming out covering several genres, and 7 of them are 1st Party titles. If I'm cynical and don't count remakes, that only Marks off Pokemon and Advance Wars, leaving 6 notable titles among whatever else will come out. I don't want to brush negative comments off with "well that's your opinion, man" but it's obtuse to ignore all of these games altogether.
For people asking about Nintendo's presence at TGS in past years. Fron the top of my head I can only recall they were there on 2005 with a Revolution demo of Metroid Prime 2.
I am a switch owner since 2017. I owned the launch version, V2 and Animal Crossing Edition, and I have been struggling to play anything Nintendo since the end of 2019.
It has been almost 2 years of mediocre first party output of ports and remasters. Metroid Dread will be the first since Animal Crossing. It is just depressing nowadays to be a Nintendo fan and switch owner. At least there was 3DS at the time of Wii U. Now we have theme parks which nobody can visit and no games to play.
Is there a chance of Castlevania Advanced Collection going to be announced by Konami at TGS? I thought they were going to announce that in the last game show in late August.
@Bunkerneath there plenty of new games in development rather them not rush them out like some devs have and besides switch has a huge library of games on it alrdy plus some of us are backlogged as it is.
@Pokester99 that has to be the lamest reply I've ever read on here.
I'm convinced that the people in the comments complaining about no games are the same person under multiple accounts lol
@Bunkerneath Don't get me wrong, their 2021 fall lineup doesn't seem as high budget as other years. They're still releasing Wario Ware next week, Metroid and Mario Party in October, Advance Wars remaster, Big Brain Academy, and Diamond and Pearl remasters all in 2021 -
With Legends Arceus and Splatoon 3 early next year too. That is not 2015 Wii U output. It's just not.
@ModdedInkling Nintendo is not really that big a company, they have to expend some talents for the theme park, especially their top level staffs - for design, supervise and quality control.
"Mario creator and Nintendo creative fellow Shigeru Miyamoto was heavily involved in the design and construction of the land and its attractions"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Nintendo_World
@Bunkerneath Metroid Dread in October. Warioware: get it together on 9/10. Cruise'N Blast on 9/14. Mario Party Superstars on 10/29. SMT V on 11/12. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl on 11/19. Advance Wars reboot on 12/3.
2022 has Pokemon Legends: Arceus on 1/28. Project Triangle Strategy, BOTW 2, and Splatoon 3 are all slated for 2022 as well.
Or do most of these not count because they aren't developed "in-house?"
@NoTinderLife
And what's in that statement that suggests other developers were involved with Super Nintendo World? It explicitly mentions Shigeru Miyamoto. JUST Miyamoto.
@ModdedInkling Do you think just one person from Nintendo was involved in the creation of that theme park? Even if that's the case, Miyamoto represents 50% of Nintendo - him not being around for the last 5 years is probably the cause of very few 1st party games from Nintendo.
@mezoomozaa I have been struggling to play anything Nintendo since the end of 2019.
It has been almost 2 years of mediocre first party output of ports and remasters.
Must not have a life outside of the home then. To make such comments when hundred or more games coming Digital/Physical since Switch came out if just loony. Tells that someone forgot why the Switch is a success and keeps growing games sold and Consoles.
@NoTinderLife
What I'm trying to say is that every company has various different departments, especially looking at Nintendo where the majority of their departments outside of Japan have been focused on marketing (refer to Nintendo of America) rather than game development. It's not a simple entertainment company geared towards making games. They have many different groups of employees that each have different qualifications and goals. It's not all just about game development. Who makes the commercials? Who programs the websites? Who works on the hardware?
The only game development companies that handle every single thing are the indie developers. Nintendo, despite being significantly smaller than Sony or Microsoft, still have a structure like any major corporation would, not a simple game development company.
Lmao.
(That's all I have to say to be quite honest)
Nothing unusual here, they're usually not at TGS anyway.
The Switch already has a packed lineup for the rest of the year and 2022 is already looking good. Don't know where this "lack of games" argument is coming from, but ok.
@NinChocolate Nintendo had a great TGS appearance around 2008. They revealed Punch out and Sin and Punishment (both for Wii)
@Bunkerneath This is definitely better than the WiiU days.
@Bunkerneath Warioware, Metroid, SMT V, and a few others are still coming out on switch this year.
@NinChocolate @roboshort I'd say Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity but I suspect that's more Koei Techmo.
@mezoomozaa @Pokester99 @Bunkerneath I don't know what you're talking about. September to December each have something with their name on it. There's no lack of anything. You're just un informed is all. Did any of you actually think before you typed?
@CodyMKW No offense, but speak for yourself.
There are a lot of games, but there are still plenty more I hope come down the road.
They never go to TGS so this is hardly new
The switch hasn't had a game I want since either ring fit or astral chain, can't remember what came last. Man the switch sucks, it's a wii u that doesn't have dual screens and maybe there's a chance Bayo 3 will release. Xbox is killing it at least
The last time Nintendo attended TGS to announce something was in 2005 to show off the Nintendo Revolution controller (i.e. the Wii Remote).
That was 16 years ago.
Nintendo @ TGS hasn't been a thing for ages.
@Andrew5678
Yeah, holiday 2021 is probably one of the strongest holidays in a long time for Nintendo-published software (or in the case of Cruis'n Blast, a Nintendo IP published by someone else).
Unfortunately, none of those games you listed are big 3D action-adventure games or shooters, which is what most western male gamers posting on gaming websites care about these days.
They hardly ever go to TGS anyway! It's not a new story in that sense
