Streets of Rage 4 was a big highlight of 2020 for gamers of a certain age, beat 'em up fans and indeed anyone that simply jumped into the series for the first time and had a blast. Dotemu and the teams at Lizardcube / Guard Crush Games have since kept anticipation high with the Mr. X Nightmare DLC, which adds three new playable characters - Estel Aguirre, Max Thunder and Shiva - along with a 'Survivor' mode. Well, the release details have finally dropped, and it arrives on 15th July (trailer at the top of the page!) priced at $7.99USD and regional equivalents.
The Survivor mode seems intriguing - as you clear levels you can choose from special abilities to take into the next round; you can take on randomised rooms or there'll be set 'weekly' runs to try. Another fantastic addition is that progress in the mode will unlock special moves that you can then apply to other characters, customising them to use in any mode you want.
The announcement brings first details for Mr. X Nightmare’s Survival mode, an inventive, immensely replayable challenge for Streets of Rage 4’s most versatile brawlers. Fighters beat down endless waves of foes and earn perks for as long as they can stay alive across two session variations: Random, which keeps each fight unpredictable through generated runs; and Weekly, a series of static gauntlets generated each week.
Each completed level offers two randomized perks to choose from, granting stackable bonuses to power up combatants in unique and devastating ways until they’re defeated. Braving Survival’s onslaughts also permanently unlocks new moves for use across any of Streets of Rage 4’s modes, allowing players to personalize movelists for their favorite characters. Progress unlocks devastating new weapons within both Survival mode and an incoming training mode, as well as gallery content. The mode’s leaderboards keep track of the community’s well-fought runs too; who will be Wood Oak City’s finest fighter?
It's worth noting that 15th July will also bring a free update with goodies for those not keen to pay extra for the DLC. The free update will include an "in-depth training system, color palette options, a fiendish New Mania+ difficulty, plus a wealth of refinements and balancing changes".
Finally, Merge Games has confirmed that on 24th September it'll launch a physical edition on Switch (as well as PS4) that'll include the full game and all DLC on the cartridge.
Lots of Streets of Rage 4 goodness there, are you planning to pick up the Mr. X Nightmare DLC and/or the physical edition when that arrives?

Never played a beat em up but this looks great. Might buy it once I've gotten through a few games in my backlog.
Easily one of the best Switch games available, once you learn how to play it properly and master all the techniques and nuances it’s sublime.
Finally...I don't know why they didn't announce the release date sooner, but ok.
YES! Normal physical releases are best, not limited 1 time print HORSES-T! 🐴
Ugh, rats, I'll have to trade in my Limited Run edition cartridge to get the all-in-1 version in September.
Great news Love this game.
Another physical.... Now it makes me feel the need to sell my original and get the complete.
A physical release with all of these updates and DLC might very well match or surpass the classic Streets of Rage 2 for me. The base version of 4 is already amazing.
I didn't like how only limited collector editions of the physical were released at first, how the "classic" physical version got released down the line, and that now an anniversary edition is coming up.
Still I'm completely down for this DLC
Fantastic news.
physical version. good things come to those who wait!!!!
Already listing my original copy on eBay...
Can't beat a good bit of mindless gaming violence, what with this, TMNT Shredders Revenge coming and countless others already here, I feel spoilt for choice!! Well..... I've played on worse consoles
Ok, Merge games. You need to sort out your releases, because releasing a physical edition everytime there is a new dlc patch is a bit rich. How about wait until all planned dlc is released?
@Teksetter do it sooner rather than later otherwise it’ll be worth next to nothing
Good now I could sold away the incomplete Limited Run Games version once I got that new one.
Not typically one to buy DLC, but this is an easy purchase and I am thrilled to come back to this one. Easily one of my favorite experiences on Switch.
I thought they already had a normal physical release for this game, or was that only for Europe or something? Glad to see them reissue another release with the DLC on card.
@EVIL-C This game always had a normal physical release.
Yea, now the question is do I buy the new physical edition with the DLC. hmm. Do we know if this will be the ONLY DLC for the game?? I don't wanna buy a 3rd physical copy if they announce more. LOL
The standard release dropped in price faster than I expected, so I'll wait and see how the price of this updated version runs.
On the one hand it feels like they're milking it harder than the Gorman Brothers, but on the other hand, maybe we're only getting this release because the previous release sold so well...
@YANDMAN Where? I only know about the LRG release.
Honestly, they should be sending those who bought the physical version a free physical version with all the DLC on it. But who knows, there's probably more DLC on the way after that. I'm not a fan of this model.
Nice news, but I'll stay with my "old" physical version.
Yes! So close, can't wait. Cheap too!
Great to hear but I already bought it
from Limited Run Games, more specifically the Classic Edition, so I'll stick with that.
Wonder what the colour palette options are. I dream of giving axel that yellow t shirt black jean combo again. I hope we can choose the colours individually. Axel in all black would rule. A small option but here’s hoping xxx
A "normal" physical release had already been released after the Limited Run last year. In fact, I remember getting mad about it being out before my LR copy had even shipped.
Was released July 30, 2020 (by Merge).

Another physical edition?? I already own the Switch and Ps4 copies from LR and also bought the PS4 version again at Best Buy under the name Bare Knuckles. The DLC is a nice touch but if we’re gonna release it again in stores why not toss in the first 3 SOR Genesis titles for good measure??
The preservationist In me wants that complete physical edition
Well I already have physical versions of the game for PS4 and Switch through Limited Run (Sealed) and I was going to buy the physical copies from Best Buy but haven't yet. Glad I didn't because now I will buy this Complete Edition instead. One of my favorite games last year!
@Abeedo ohh man you should play this and not only this but get the sega genesis collection it has the others on it and you should play capcoms beat em up bundle. That has the other greats with final fight being my fav beat em up. Now the online for the cap on beat em up is crap but the games are excellent.
I think I’ll wait until September. I have this for free with game pass so I can wait.
@joey302 just sell your others on eBay and buy the one with everything in it.
@Nintendo4Sonic ditto, I have not purchased any of the physicals and been waiting for the physical because I knew this was coming. If have game pass on Xbox and it has SoR4 for free on it so I’ve been playing there. Will definitely be getting that physical though.
@EVIL-C Every single store online. I bought mine from amazon for a lot less.
@Dirty0814 yea no I know it’s just that it seems this is happening all too often lately in this industry and they should plan physical releases a bit more carefully
@joey302 of course, I started a few years ago not buying games when they come out and waiting for the complete physicals. After awhile they either come out with all the dlc on it or you get it on sale. With me I don’t think anyone should pay full game price for something that’s not complete. Now if the industry want to raise prices fine that happens with everything overtime but give me a complete edition on cartridge.
Didn't I just buy a physical edition of this game??
@Dirty0814 couldn’t agree with you more and yes I was never a big fan of DLC content either
What I'd like to see (pipe dream) is cartridges (one of the few benefits) that had a writeable storage area on them so you could store DLC on it, meaning they could do an initial physical release and add the DLC to it.
