Earlier this month, NetherRealm announced it was finished with Mortal Kombat 11 and was now focused on its next project.
As for what the "next project" is, nobody really knows, but there has been one rumour about a superhero fighting game - similar to Injustice. Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon has also created a lot of speculation on social media earlier this week tweeting a poll about the Capcom series, Street Fighter:
Of course, it had many fans wondering if there could be a potential Mortal Kombat x Street Fighter crossover in the future, and while there's always a possibility, Boon followed up with a comment about how not everything he posts is necessarily a clue, or "klue" in the case of Mortal Kombat:
He added how two different publishers adds a layer of complexity and said it's not as simple as "people want it, so do it". There have been stories in the past as well about Capcom apparently not wanting to associate its own characters and IP with the brutal and bloody western fighter.
Street Fighter's Yoshinori Ono shared the following details at an event back in 2019:
"It's true that a proposal for a Street Fighter character in Mortal Kombat was rejected by Capcom. But it wasn't me personally! There were many people at the company that felt that it wasn't a good fit for our characters. I actually met Ed at the Brazil game show and spoke to him personally about it. So it's true - but I didn't make the decision!"
Would you like to one day see Mortal Kombat crossover with Street Fighter? How about another superhero game from NetherRealms? And what do you think is next for Boon's iconic fighting series? Leave your thoughts down below.

I love both franchises, but they don't fit well together. I honestly have no idea why some people want EVERY crossover possible.
Why dafaq havent we got sf5 on switch yet?
@roy130390 ya….we got VS DC universe which was really ok…but what next?? Vs tekken?? Vs virtual fighter?? Vs KOF?? Let Mortal Kombat be mortal Kombat.
Honestly, I prefer what they do now featuring pop culture icons being guests.
What the heck is a 'klue'?
No thanks, I don't care to see Street Fighter characters ripped limb from limb.
@Franklin
It's when you find a pawprint and put it in your notebook
I don't think it would work out well. Wouldn't mind SF V and Injustice 2 on the Switch instead though.
Darkstalkers X Mortal Kombat would be a more thematically fitting crossover. But considering crossovers these days give more attention to marketability than anything else, it wouldnt be anything less than 'Vs. Street Fighter' or 'Vs. Capcom' here.
Kirby in Mortal Kombat.
It just makes sense
I mean his name even starts with a K.
Killer Kirby Kombat!
We sat through Street Fighter x Tekken, so something to redeem that would be welcomed.
@Fat_Pun Because it was pretty well advertised it was funded by Sony.
Kinda like how Bayonetta 2 is a Nintendo exclusive.
When you see scenes like these and still think it's not Mortal Kombat worthy.

But then you see these and you wonder if Mortal Kombat really are what it is.
But honestly a Street Fighter vs. Mortal Kombat fighting game would be confusing to play, the MK player won't like the SF play style and the SF player won't like the MK gruesome finishers.
@Fat_Pun Because Sony won't allow it.
Ya i know, Sony funded it, but i’d still love a switch port of the complete version of the game 😈
Crossover fighting games can be fun like earlier marvel v capcoms but they can also be terrible , it can be an awkard fit.
Street fighter x tekken was rough.
It's just like mk vs DC. They didn't want to show DC characters getting their heads cut off and guts ripped out. It's just not a good fit. I say get working on MK 12 or do Injustice 3.
@Specter_of-the_OLED well see there's the street fighter movie, the movie the game , the cartoon show the legend of chun li.sf v tekken
Both franchises have alot of garbage over the years. Not really right to show highs of Sf vs lows of MK.
Though perfectly fine to have a preference of course.
If they are going crossover they both are big enough that you'd want justice done to both of them .
Why is the best Street Fighter missing from his poll? Street Fighter Alpha 3!
Netherrealm have been alternating between Mortal Kombat and Injustice for the past 10 years (Injustice was in development in 2011, released in 2013). It's hardly a "rumour" that the game after MK11 is going to involve super heroes.
I'd say it's at 90% it will be DC again - but will it simply be Injustice 3? I mean probably?
There is a possibility of a stand-alone Marvel fighting game... but Disney would have to pay WB a small fortune for that privilege, and realistically you'd have to argue WB as a film studio first and foremost would have powerful stakeholders that would be opposed to that idea given how important the DC movie universe is to them.
It's fun to speculate... but realistically Injustice 3 is the most likely outcome here.
How about TEKKEN 7 for the Switch? Harada should be relatively easier to convince for folks at Nintendo.
@Fat_Pun Sony paid for it. It will never be on Switch or any other non-Sony console.
I mean, DC said "NO GRATUITOUS VIOLENCE" and we got Mortal Kombat vs. DC. There were no crazy fatalities, and the game still retained its atmosphere. MK vs. SF could be just like that.
Mortal kombat vs Killer instinct. Match made in heaven.
Lol funny how people believe everything they read and to think everything is a klue.haha ed shut it down lol
After trying all the classic SF games in the anniversary collection, I agree that Third Strike was the most interesting and cool one too
@Fat_Pun Sony paid for it.
And besides. It existed on PC since release. I had it for years on PC and PS4.
Can't imagine Capcom ever letting Ryu receive a fatality. That'd be like Nintendo putting Scorpion in Smash and adding fatalities to 1v1.
I’m fine with another injustice. It’s been a long enough wait since we got one. Seeing a marvel game from them would be cool also. I’m not so big on all the blood and gore, but still do like the way MK plays. Injustice has been my favorite thing they’ve done yet since you’ve got MKs gameplay minus the gore.
Makes sense. It’s probably the same reason an MK character isn’t in Smash.
I would love to see another injustice. Add Lord Drakkon as a bonus character and I would be thrilled lol
It'd be a fun game, you only have to watch those fan videos made years ago.
Put me in the “two flavors that don’t work together” category. Besides having two opponents on the screen, they’re about a different mechanically as fighters get. Adapting MK zoning to SF style play sounds like a miserable game, and what about the block button?
Burying the lede... Third Strike being the most popular classic SF should inspire fighter devs to take more chances with the story and mechanics of their games. Street Fighter IV felt so cowardly to me at the time, regressing the story and bringing back decades old characters. Rumor was the original roster didn’t even have Ryu and Ken!
it would fit in Smash but Japan doesnt really care for MK do they?
@w00dm4n It won't happen because of this. Japan doesn't give a ***** about MK.
@Spiders It would be so great if they made a new SF and go back to 2D sprite graphics. SF3 is a masterclass in pixel artwork.
@w00dm4n Well, the modern MK games never saw release in Japan due to CEROs ruling on gore involving the showing internal organs being a big no-no.
Or at least thats what I recall.
Either way, it's fair to say MK has a limited audience in Japan.
@SMH88 Here here! As much as I love the look of Strive and how they've managed to make the game "feel" like a sprite fighter, I miss that look. Resolution aside, everything since SFIII, KOFXIII, Garou, etc., feels like steps backward.
Scorpion and Subzero can be a part of Smash Bros.
Of course, they won't have the same gameplay style of Mortal Kombat, and that's it.
Smash Bros has Ryu, Ken, Virtua Fighter Kids, Tekken, Fatal Fury characters... and the game style of Smash Bros has nothing to do with these games.
A Mortal Kombat x Street Fighter game would be incredible, but I think it would be easier to be closer to Mortal Kombat style... (Almost like a Mortal Kombat vs Street Fighter The Movie).
@Fat_Pun Can the Switch even run SFV without making it look like a PS1 game?
@SMH88 Third Strike is gorgeous. Just played it AGAIN yesterday, and the attention to detail is stunning. It rivals modern graphics, and is a great work of art.
@BloodNinja No hate speech please
We all know that Switch can run a nice SFV PS3 version with many tweaks and nice gameplay.
@jancotianno I dunno, SFV would take an egregious amount of time to downgrade, and I no longer will continue to pay full price for downgraded software. Wouldn’t it be easier and make more sense for the Switch to get SFIV, instead? It feels like there would be less compromises with that port than with V.
@BloodNinja Capcom did a great job porting SF IV on 3DS.
I think it wouldn't take so much effort to downgrade SFV for NS.
@jancotianno Would you pay full price for downgrade software?
I love both fighting game IP, but as much as much sales both NR/WB and Capcom would get, I rather prefer Mortal Kombat vs Killer Instinct instead!
If somehow Microsoft makes the purchase to WB, MK vs KI would be so damn awesome! Sabrewolf clawing and biting Baraka's face and neck, Nightwolf doing Ultra! It's a match made in heaven. Both Western Fighting Games going at it! Sub Zero vs Glacius, Kano vs Spinal, Takeda vs Arbiter, SHAO KAHN VS EYEDOL?!?!?! C'MON MAN!! xD
@Spiders Absolutely. Have you played the arcade-only 2D fighter 'Martial Masters'? Check it out in MAME if you haven't. It's another, much less well-known 2D fighter that has stunning sprite work.
@BloodNinja Depends on the quality. I bought MK11 (on sale, 50% off I admit), and it was good enough to me.
It would be the same for SFV.
@jancotianno If something is downgraded, the quality won’t be something worth paying full price for, though.
@SMH88 No but I’m watching videos now. Sprite work is really nice and I love these character designs.
Does anyone else cringe with how Netherrealms changes every word that starts with an C to a K? I know it's a nitpick, but it just reminds me of the Xtreme '90s
No thanks. I don’t want to see my sweet girl Chun-Li get horrifically dismembered.
@BloodNinja I paid full price for mk 11 on switch and I'm fine with my purchase and it's downgraded big time from the xbox one.i have it on both which I'm fine with both copies
Doesn't seem to fit, IMO.
A better crossover is with Killer Instinct
As for the Capcom vs titles, I'd say with the vice grip that Disney has over marvel, Capcom should seek out Shounen Jump.
@Darkyoshi98 You’re fine with being ripped off?
@BloodNinja By your logic buying almost anything on a console that is available on PC is a ripoff, since PC's can achieve higher graphical fidelity and better framerates a lot of the time. My GTX 1080 achieves better performance than my PS4 or XOne.
That is the fallacy of us this "downgraded ports are not worth the money," because the argument has to then apply to everything that is not the strongest hardware on the scene. It's not an argument that can be applied in a bubble.
It won't happen, Capcom is a la Japanese company and has completely different cultural sensitivities compared to the west.
In Japan they find games like Mortal Kombat to be of poor taste, with ugly characters. It won't happen people don't get your hopes up.
Besides the two IP are not a match in the slightest.
@tkdboy1889 Isn't it amazing that the PC versions, which are the best versions, can be had on sale for sometimes up to 80%?
How can you say that the argument is a fallacy, and that "PC's can achieve higher graphical fidelity and better framerates a lot of the time," in the same post? You literally just discredited yourself.
Good God yes please! Two of the best fighting games ever. It would be like peanut butter & chocolate! The Reeses of fighting games you guys, THE REESES!
Also a new Clay Fighter would be clean af too!
I'd be down for a new Injustice but at the same time I'd probably end up buying it on PS4. Those games are definitely next gen titles for me. The Switch is my go-to system, but I like all the power for games like these. Frame rates matter here more than any other genre, and the games look so much slicker on a PS4P.
I'd love to see a Street Fighter X Mortal Kombat game, but, if they just put Scorpion or Sub-zero in Smash that would be pretty cool too.
Let me guess: The character was Ken, and when Capcom said no, he was turned into Kobra?
@Fat_Pun Because when a third-party exclusive is on a Sony platform, it stays on a Sony platform. For some reason, that doesn't tend to apply as much to Nintendo and Microsoft (especially when it comes to Capcom), which probably explains why so many Sony fans have such annoying entitlement issues.
@Chamver I mean to be fair - the thought of Sonic ever being on Nintendo was laughable... so it’s more likely than that at least.
@BloodNinja Allow me to rephrase this then, because I certainly did not discredit myself.
Anyone who says that it is pointless to buy a multiplat on Switch because it will run worse than it does on Xbox or Playstation, is unknowingly shooting themselves in the foot unless they play on PC.
This is mainly targeted at Sony loyalists and the like who point out Switch's inferior hardware capability. While their point is true, they are also proving their own platform of choice is no good by their standards, because by that logic they should never buy third party on any console since PC's are stronger. As it is, PS5 is already seeing that need dynamic resolution limited at 1080p in order to get 60FPS. I played games like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Witcher 3 on my PS4, and the overall performance was about on par with what people consider "unacceptable" on Switch.
My point is this: Console players who get really picky about framerate/graphical fidelity are losing their own argument. There are already PC components that outperform the Series X and PS5. It is literally pointless for ANY console loyalist to get into the argument of performance, because PC always has and always will dominate in that field.
Short version: Anyone unwilling to buy Switch ports purely because of performance should have a gaming PC, as I do.
@tkdboy1889 Then why are fighting game tournaments held typically on PS4? Seems like that console is fine enough. Nobody is talking about needing the MAXIMUM level of performance, but you would be daft to compare performance on Switch vs. PS4. The PS4 versions of games run great, and certainly better than Switch.
Switch users are almost always going to get the downgraded version of multi-platform software, and still have to pay the highest price. That’s a fact, go to any shop and look for yourself.
Don't care since of how poorly MK11 runs on the switch. Only game I nearly instantly regretted buying. And no it's not just because switch is underpowered. Warframe runs just lovely with a whole lot more going on than 2 characters.
@Fat_Pun sony paid (and funded the development of the game) for the exclusivity so you'll sadly have 0% chance for the game to come to switch let alone xbox..
@Specter_of-the_OLED Personally, I prefer the gameplay in the Street Fighter games and think they would be better with blood and gore. As far as I know though, the closest I can get to that combination is the Killer Instinct series.
I remember back in the day, there was a rumor that if you knew the right code and timing sequence, you could play and fight with Mortal Kombat players on Street Fighter 2 using a Game Genie. I don't know where it came from, but I tried for days to get the "code" to work! 😀😂 Kids!
