Re: Review: Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp (Mobile)

the8thark

@TheLZdragon

NF6429 is correct. This game is an average pay to win game at best. it's not a diamond in the rough at all. I explained in detail why this is the case above. Great smart phone games exist. This however is not one of them.

Re: Review: Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp (Mobile)

the8thark

Happy Home Designer: Hobo Edition

That's what this game is. I'll explain it in more detail.

The game is based around a few core components.

1. Timers. There's a timer for almost everything. Shake a tree for fruit and get a timer. Craft an item or something else and get a timer. etc etc (it might only be camp upgrades. You can bypass the timer with specific items. This is the free to play nature at work. Even AI resident requests (after you've given them a few things) are on a timer which can be bypassed with leaf tickets.

2. Paid Currency - Bells are the free, easy to access currency. Leaf Tickets are the harder to get (without paying money) or easier to get (with paying money) currency. So far the game seems to be stingy on handing out the leaf tickets (for free players) but in time we shall see if this still holds true.

3. Larger catch items - You can make and use certain items to get more items. For example you can use huney to catch more bugs or fishing nets to catch more fish and crustaceans. These items like the honey and fishing nets are all one use. More ways the free to play model is expressed here.
Based on what I have read things like honey, fishing nets and similar are all bought with leaf tickets. Well apart from the few you get from achievement awards.

4. Inviting AI residents to your campsite - Doing this levels them up, along with doing minor quests for them. This game is more about getting the other residents to like your camp site than it is beautifying your camp site just because you can. Each AI resident has criteria you need to do before they will visit your campsite.

5. Levels - You can level yourself up as well as levelling up the other residents by doing quests for them and having them like your camp site when they visit. levelling up the residents is basically getting them to like you more.
Also you can build/create more things when you level up more.

5. Daily quests and daily log in bonuses - To get you to play every day.

Technical opinions

The looks, sounds and plays just fine. It's nice for what it is on the mobile phone. All of the basic tasks like fishing, bug collecting, placing items in your camp site and other places is easy and just works.

Other minor things.

1. There is a couple of items you can only get with in 45 days from the time you start playing the game. They cost quite a lot of leaf tickets to get. I am unsure if you can get enough for both items without paying real money. If you don't get them within the first 45 days you miss out. They say they might be back later but I think that'a a maybe and not a certainty.

2. You can visit your friends camp sites. So we can show off our camp site to each other.

3. You can friend other players (not AI residents) easily in game. As well as there is a way to friend people you know (same way as in the other Nintendo mobile games)

4. Expanding your personal inventory space costs leaf tickets. ame deal with being able to have more than one item crafted at once. Costs leaf tickets.

5. It's RNG which shops are in the market place. They rotate over time.

6. Loans exist just like other Animal Crossing games.

7. One region of the map is locked unless you get 5 other players to help you or you pay some leaf tickets to enter.

8. There is no Mayor or Museum.

9. I think there is no calendar events. I don't see a calendar in game.

10. Crafting come items requires bells plus materials.

My overall feelings.
This game feels like Animal Crossing lite. It's nice to have but fans of the series will be left wanting. At best this is a stop gap measure till we get a decent new Animal Crossing game. This is nice for mobile but we shall see how much long term interest this has. It'll certainly need some content updates to still be used alot after 6 months or a year.

My overall score - 4/10

Re: Review: DOOM (Switch)

8 is not that good my the reviewing standards here. 9’s and 10’s fat handed out all the time. The reviewers scare very easily, not harshly at all.

Re: Guide: The Simple Trick To Finding All Of Super Mario Odyssey's Power Moons

the8thark

@rjejr I just use the pro controller and the game works very well with that. Honestly there's not much you need motion controls for.

The higher jump can be accessed by doing it right after a ground pound. The longer hat throw can be accessed by doibng a hat through right after a ground pound.
Throwing your hat upwards is nice and can be done with the pro controller (though tough) I have never seen a use for it.

Re: Guide: Super Mario Odyssey amiibo Outfit Unlocks

the8thark

You can unlock all these without using amiibo if you so wish.
The article is not 100% correct so I'll share how it actualy is.

Mario (SSB, SM, 30th) - Classic Cap and Classic Outfit
Dr. Mario (SSB) - Doctor Headware and Doctor Outfit
Mario - (Gold, Silver)- Gold Mario Cap and Gold Mario Outfit
Diddy Kong (SSB, SM) - Diddy Kong Hat and Diddy Kong Suit
Luigi (SSB, SM) - Luigi Cap and Luigi Suit
Wario (SSB, SM) - Wario Cap and Wario Suit
Waluigi (SM) - Waluigi Cap and Waluigi Suit
Mario (Wedding)- Mario's Top Hat and Mario's Tuxedo
Bowser Wedding Outfit (Wedding) - Bowser's Top Hat and Bowser's Tuxedo
Peach Wedding Outfit (Wedding) - Peach's Veil and Peach's Wedding Dress

Re: Guide: The Simple Trick To Finding All Of Super Mario Odyssey's Power Moons

the8thark

Use nothing - Search out the Power Moons on your own
Parrot - Get the Power Moon Names
Toad - 50 coins for a Power Moon guide
Rabbids like machine - Tap an amiibo for Power Moon guide

50 coins are easy to get. I am sitting on 4500 coins and I'm no where near finishing the main storyline.

The other option is paying for amiibo or buying the standard or limited edition game guide book.

So far I am just using the parrot and treating the Power Moon name as a cryptic puzzle I have to work out.

Re: Nintendo's Share Value Soars As Switch Is Projected To Ship 16.74 Million Units By March

the8thark

@kobashi100

The Vita and Neo Geo Pocket were powerful handheld consoles that played 2nd fiddle to their more powerful TV based counteriarts. Ie the Neo Geo and PlayStation.

The Nintendo Switch on the other hand is the primary Nintendo console, playing 2nd fidecro nothing. That’s the main difference.

Why choose the Vita port when you can choose the better PS4 port? The Switch though is almostbas good as a modern TV based console but is portable also. Also the Nintendo Switch uses modern technology unlike the PS4. Things like optical media discs, HDD platter hard drives are old technology and those who keep using them will be left behind.

Hybrid consoles will one day be as powerful as the PS4 and then eclipse that. Only a fool would think otherwise. The tech is improving all the time. The Nintendo Switch is the early adopter to all this tech and in the future it’ll the mainstream and we will call consoles tethered to our televisions as retro or old fashioned.

Re: Review: Super Mario Odyssey (Switch)

the8thark

@MonkiPlays

Nope. NintendoLife are handing out 10s without when considering if the games actually deserve it.

We all knew NintendoLife wod hand out a 10 here. Not sure if the game deserves it though.

Re: Review: Super Mario Odyssey (Switch)

the8thark

The motion controls are not optional if you want to 100% complete the game as they allow you to jump higher and throw the hat in ways you can’t do if you don’t use motion controls.

It’s a big issue that the reviewer here choose to forget when writing the review.

There is nothing in the review that’s shows this game deserves a 10. To me the review as written says the game is worth an 8 or 9.

Re: YouTuber Gets Banned From Site For Streaming Super Mario Odyssey

the8thark

@JHDK

I don't think you understand what happened here. He did not receive this game as an early access copy like the gaming journalists do. His local gaming store broke the street date by a week and he just bought the game there. No NDA to deal with.

I do think Youtube did the right thing, however the actual culprit was not punished. The culprit being the game store that broke the street date. Nintendo should punish that store harshly by shipping their copies of the next big gale late or not at all. WIll serve them right.

Re: Preview: Fire Emblem Warriors Could Be The Best Musou Game Yet

the8thark

@dystome
Most of the comments I said about Hyrule Warriors I am making solely about that game and not other Musou games. Hyrule Warriors has it's own flaws that most other Musou games do not share.

The genre is not flawed. Like all genres some games in it are great and otherws not so great.

I really like the genre. I liked DQH / DQH2 / DW8 a lot. On the other hand I didn't like Hyrule Warriors. Hyrule Warriors is a flawed Musou game. Probably one of the most flawed Musou gamea around. Sure All Star Warriors is objectively worse but Hyrule Warriors flaws only reallt become apparant after a long gameplay. Then they just become frustrating, anoying and in my opinion game breaking.

@TurboTEF
Dragon Quest Heroes 2 is great because it's more RPG and less Musou in many ways. It's not the player vs 1000 weakling pawns with 3-4 generals in the mix. The enemies in DQH and DQH2 are less in number but stronger to make up for it.

@Snaplocket
If you think Musou games have that flaw, then almost every game ever made also has the flaw as well. The majority of games are repetative in nature.

Re: Preview: Fire Emblem Warriors Could Be The Best Musou Game Yet

the8thark

@dystome

Why do people not get bored of jumping over and over in Mario games?

Why do people not get bored of running and swinging a weapon over and over in Zelda games?

Why do people not get bored of mashing the shoot button in Star Fox games over and over?

Why do people not get bored of doing the same repetitive task to score points in every sports game game ever invented?

And so on and so on.
You get my point. All games are repetitive in what the player does by nature.

I find Warriors games fun because it’s sn easy way to explore the battlefields and the story of the game I am playing.

Re: Preview: Fire Emblem Warriors Could Be The Best Musou Game Yet

the8thark

Hyrule Warriors was a terrible Warriors game.

Worthless collectables
The hearts worhless in A Rank runs and armour badges worthless in the levels with no favoured element (ie all the tough levels)

Bosses and Captains with RNG openings
You have to wait for them to expose their opening to exploit it to attack them. Totally makes A Rank RNG to get because if the time requirement and makes fighting them just not fun. The better Warriors games don’t have this and the games are better for it.

Some of the characters were objectively bad
In Dynasty Warriors 8 there is a lot more characters. Assuming you only used the favoured weapon with every character, there is few, if any at all truly bad characters. Some have a higher skill cap and everyone will have their favourites but none are truly bad like in Hyrule Warriors.

No way to give a fort more health apart from letting it be captured and retaking it again.
I think fort health is a stupid idea. It should just be a hidden mechanic that resets when all of the enemy is removed from the fort. Dynasty Warriors 8 dies this well.

There is more but that will do for now.

Hyrule Warriors is a very fun though very flawed game. I just hope Fire Emblem Warriors has none of the same flaws.

Re: Preview: Fire Emblem Warriors Could Be The Best Musou Game Yet

the8thark

It will only be the best if they learn from all of the mistakes made with Hyrule Warriors.

Also to avoid being like the bad Warriors games - Warriors All Stars and Samurai Warriors 4-2.

Also to learn why the good Warriors games were good - Dynasty Warriors 8, Dragon Quest Heroes 2.

These are just some examples, there are more good and bad Warriors games out there.

Re: Here Are the Key Lessons that Nintendo Learned from the Wii U

the8thark

@electrolite77

In reply to your 7 points
1) Better hardware
2) More developer-friendly environment
3) Better Console design
4) Better Console name
5) Better Controller
6) Better games lineup in the first 10 months
7) Better marketing (though to be fair the concept itself is so much better and easier to sell)

1. All newer generation consoles have better hardware than it's predecessor so that's not really anything out of the ordinary. The WiiU had better hardware than the Wii.

2. This is a big point. Nintendo went all out to make developing for the Switch a fun experience and made interacting with Nintendo about it a breeze.

3. I would argue that's more advertising. The WiiU had potential based on it's hardware that was never fully utilised. Also without the WiiU existing, we never would have had the Switch. Nintendo learned all about portable 2nd screens to home consoles with the WiiU and used that information to develop the Switch.

4. Again that's advertising. Nintendo didn't explain properly that the WiiU in not just a Wii Pro. The new Switch name was basically a requirement to leave the whole failed advertising of the WiiU in the past.

5. That dependson what controllers you are talking about. The Joycons on the console is little different than the WiiU gamepad. However the ability to use them separately to the screen is huge. The pro controller scene is different though. The WiiU pro controller was great. But the Switch one is far superior. Mostly because of the material the case for it is made of. It's not shiny plastic that smudges and just gets all slippery with a little hand sweat like the WiiU one is. It seems that Nintendo made the WiiU pro controller to fit in aesthetically with the gamepad but they made the Switch pro controller purely based on functionality. The difference is huge and it really shows.

6. Another huge point. The WiiU had no console selling games for months after it launch, whereis the Switch had one on day 1. And from then till now, the Switch has had tons. Even if the latter half of 2018 is barren for the Switch, the backlog will keep us going. The only downside is later good games not being bought because people's backlogs are too large and developers not getting the sales that their games otherwise would have had. Still that is better than the WiiU's no good games for over a year problem.

7. The concept for the Switch I would argue is a tougher sell. Why would people want another portable Nintendo console when the 3DS already exists? That's the question that the Nintendo marketing team had to answer. Nintendo answered it quite well, though I do think they could have pushed the portable side a little harder. All Nintendo had to say with the WiiU is "a second screen that has touch capabilities just like the DS/3DS" and everyone would have understood. Nintendo didn't do this however.

@UmniKnight

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Splatoon 2 (It's really a port not a sequel) are two good examples. Sure the truly new content is limited but it's a welcome addition and better than just a straight port with no added content.

Talking about people choosing the PS4 port over the Switch port? That's not a binary answer. In games like DOOM and Skyrim, sure you are correct there, only those who want the portability will choose the Switch port because of the compromises required to get it on the Switch. However games like Stardew Valley, Yooka-Laylee, Shovel Knight and many others, people actually preferred the Switch port and in many cases are willing to wait for it.

I honestly believe the PS4 and Switch have a different fanbase. Each fanbase is into different kinds of games. The more gritty games like DOOM, Skyrim, Final Fantasy etc etc resonate more with the PS4 fans whereas the more retro styled games and the more cutsey looking games with more vibrant colour pallets resonate much more with Switch fans.

The one exception I feel is Kingdom Hearts. If that was on Nintendo consoles (the main games that is) it would have been a huge hit there. It's just the right mix of vibrant cartoony fun that Nintendo fans like. There's also just enough seriousness in the background for the Nintendo fans to take it seriously too. I honestly believe it's only popular on the PS because it's exclusive. If it was PS and Nintendo from day 1, the PS sales would be a lot lower.

Re: Here Are the Key Lessons that Nintendo Learned from the Wii U

the8thark

This article misses out on some of the facts.

1. At the WiiU launch and in the first year or two there was a shortage of good games to play. It took Nintendo a while to fix the issue.

2. The WiiU was not marketed well pre launch. I understood what it was all about but many others did not. A failure by Nintendo there.

3. Few games used the WiiU hardware features well. The ones that did were released late in the console’s life.

4. Porting games to the WiiU was not fun. It is much easier on the Switch.

5. Nintendo did not fully embrace Unity and Unreal on the WiiU. The Switch does embrace both however.

6. NintendoLand had half of its content require the Wiimote which was not even sold in the WiiU box. That is not a good idea for a game packed in with the console.

7. The ports on the WiiU early on were just that. Nothing extra added in. No reason to rebuy the WiiU port of an old game everyone played years ago as it’s the same or worse than the original. The Switch ports all have added content unique to the Switch. Sure it’s not much extra content but it’s there and gives people more of a reason to rebut the games.

US citizens complaining that this does not stop in their city.
What about people outside the US? We don't even get this tour.

To the US people complaining, being in the same country is closer to this than being outside thr US. You need to accept you have it better than the non US citizens here.

This is just Nintendo appeasing the US yet again at the expense of everyone outside the US.

Re: Here’s What the Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle Day One Update Does

the8thark

@FX102A I don't think you understand why day 1 updates exist. Nothing to do with the media that the game is shipped on. This actually allows the games to be worked on after they go gold. The new content added between going gold and shipping is just the day 1 update.

Would you perfer the game to be delayed so the game going gold only happened after everything was done?

Re: Review: Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle (Switch)

the8thark

You all know why you want this game - Grant Kirkhope
He is a genius. Ubisoft getting him on the music here is a real score. He is one of the best in the business.

Everything, from the design, to the artwork, to the music to who they chose to work on each part of the game screams quality.

Are Rabbids still demented nibelsnarfed up weird little creatures? Yes. But Ubisoft found a way to make a game with them not cringe worthy. The game is actually very good. Kudos to Ubisoft and the team they assembled.

Re: Review: Splatoon 2 (Switch)

the8thark

" could the sequel match up or suffer from a case of the Final Fantasy IIs?"
Not true. Splatoon 2 is not garbage following garbage like in the FF case Alex said here.

Secondly Alex is a Splatoon fan. It's obvious in the review. He does not even hide the fact. Well at least he is honest, that's a good thing.

I give the game so far, a 8/10. There's just too many little niggling issues to score the game better.

Nintendo being an ass about drop outs,
No way to customise the controls (as far as I know)
No easy way to see what the controls actually are in game (as far as I know)
No way to change weapon sets in the lobby
No lobby mini game in the splatfest. I hope this returns, as it was in the WiiU game.
The multiplayer has little variety in your main objective.
The MMR in the splatfest was broken. Is Nintendo even using a proper MMR in Splatoon?
No way to have mixed teams in the Splatfest. Not counting towards the splatfest score, just better to get people into a game quickly.
Popularity has to much of an importance in the overall splatfest result. The least popular side has to win both team and solo battles to win the splatfest. This makes the splatfest end result rather worthless for anything apart from a fun thing. The most popular side can easily beat the most skilled side.

There are more issues too.

That's why I give the game so far an 8/10. Still a very good game, I have pre-ordered it. Totally not worth a 10/10 though.

I do wish Alex would review objectively and not based on personal fan bias. Alex is better than this. We know Alex can do better reviews than this. I'd like to know why the review is so biased.

Re: Andy Robinson Reflects on Yooka-Laylee’s Performance

the8thark

Yooka-Laylee was not a disappointment when it launched. NintendoLife is wrong. Some people just unfairly hated on the game, that's all.

The game is getting even better with the patches though. We all knew Playtonic would make sure th game is as good as it can be. The patches are proof of this.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Needs to Learn Lessons From Its NES Mini Mistakes

the8thark

@Tsusasi
It didn't have to be marked as limited for it to be so. Nowhere did Ninendo say they would be keeping this in stock for years to come.

The MiniNES was not about selling 5M units, I agree. It was also not about publicising Nintendo as you claim either. Just a quick cash injection. Nothing more, nothing less.

@MoonKnight7

We both agree what the MiniNES was set out to achieve. That's good.

"Nintendo did the worst thing it could have possibly done"
You said this and are wrong. Nintendo didn't do anything wrong. Even the slight PR issue over fans who wanted this to be sold for longer than it was didn't matter in the long run. It did not affect Switch sales. People still love Nintendo. Investors are happy with Nintendo's recent performance.

The only issue here is a few hurt fans who wanted the prodct to be sold for longer than it was.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Needs to Learn Lessons From Its NES Mini Mistakes

the8thark

Nintendo released a prodct (MiniMES) to provide the company a quick cash injection to tide them over till the Switch was released.

What is there to learn? Almost nothing. The product did exactly what Nintendo wanted it to do. The product was meant to be a short term, limited supply thing to begin with.

Nintendo even did a 2nd run of this to appease the fans.

It's the fans who are sad over the discontinutaion of this that need to learn the lesson of this and get over themselves.

Note Well: NintendoLife don't understand what Nintendo's aims were with this product. The product was totally successful and we should be happy Nintendo is making successful products again.

Re: Deals: The Best Nintendo Switch Micro SD Cards

the8thark

I just went with a cheap 128GB Sandisk. Just make sure it's 80mb/s read speed and bought from amazon or from a local store, not 3rd party and not from ebay at all.

Kingston and Samsung are ok too I guess.

Just make sure:
It's from an official store. Don't buy from a 3rd party seller (ebay and Amazon). Buy directly Amazon if you shop there. Makes sure you don't get a bootleg weaker card.

Make sure it's at least 80mb/s read speed. That seems to be good and make use of the card slot's speed. too much more than 80mb/s, like 90+ is waste as the Switch can't make use of that extra speed. 80MB/s seems to be roughly the most it can handle before you get no more speed boosts from the even faster cards.

For space on the card, I think 64GB or 128GB is the way to go. If you use game carts and only have the SD card for game saves, screen shots and DLC, then 64GB will suit you fine. Byt if you like digital versions of games and the future VC then 128GB will be great for you. For the price I don't think 200GB is worth it. It's too pricey for what you get and 128GB should suit most Switch owners.

Finally choose the card you want the the best price you can find it, (but from an official source, not 3rd party as discussed above). Don't let any website sway you into buying any overpriced card or a card of a brand you don't like. Also don't buy the Hori branded SD cards simply because they are very over priced for what they are and I'm not sure they have a 128GB option yet.

Re: Poll: What Wii U Ports Would You Like to Play on Nintendo Switch?

the8thark

I really think Xenoblade Chronicles X needs to be ported. But with XC2 I think it might not happen. A shame as XCX would shine on the Switch.

Past that, I think Super Mario Maker and Smash Bros 4 would sell. Smash Bros Melee on the Switch VC would totally sell too.

TMS is a good game but too niche to sell well on the Switch.

Most of the rest need dual screens which the Switch can't do.
