If you've been taking the download route when it comes to buying Switch software then you will no doubt be interested to learn how much each new AAA title takes up in terms of storage space.
If ARMS is on your radar then you might want to know that the file size has been posted online - the interesting 3D brawler will swallow up 2.2GB of internal storage.
That's a very reasonable amount of memory considering how impressive the game looks - are you surprised at how small it is? Let us know by posting something below.

Guess this just shows how much space can be saved in building a game around a cartoon aesthetic. Also the game is quite contained. 10 characters, 10 stages etc. It is still very small and good Nintendo is trying its best to keep sizes low
Seems like Nintendo have got compression techniques down to a T!
Damn 50 pounds? Maybe I am alone here but that is expensive in my eyes for what I am getting (PERSONAL OPINION).
Zelda, worth it, Xenoblade 2 Worth it, but I am not sure Arms is a 50 pound game.
@AlbertXi that's for the digital version. Physical is always cheaper.
ARMS will take zero GB on my Switch
Nintendo, masters of compression and optimisation, strike again!
Wow, is that is? Does this game have a storyline/single player or is it just random battles? The size of the game makes me worry it'll face the same fate as most fighters where there is little to no content at launch.
Not surprised. They'd really be in hARM's way if the file size was too big.
@AlbertXi It's a game that's getting free character, stage, and weapon content. It'll turn into a game worth the money they ask. Just like Splatoon did.
@SCAssassin I understand that, but there is no way to Know is it? is just a gambling it may end up being worth it it may not be.
Splatoon had way more content on day 1, I got it day One and thought it was great, this one not convinced yet.
@AlbertXi You can pre-order it for £40.99 on cartridge.
I always go digital with portable systems, so just like I did with my 3DS and Vita, that's exactly the route I've taken with my Switch, too.
Don't get me wrong, I do miss building up a nice collection of touchy-feely boxes and carts, but I just find it so much easier to take Mario Kart for a quick spin or play a few rounds of Puyo Puyo Tetris between, say, Breath of the Wild, without having to mess around with cartridges. I guess some would call it lazy, but I prefer convenient
Anyhow, with memory at an obvious premium, news of ARMS taking up a mere 2.2GB is pretty awesome!
@AlbertXi Splatoon had way LESS content on day one. It had only 5 maps and 1 game mode. This game has 10 maps and 9 game modes. Next to that, this game has a lot more local multiplayer options than Splatoon ever had.
I'm so excited for this! I'm sure this game will be totally polished and with deep gameplay! Toomuch riding on an Early SWITCH new IP without tons and tons of development going into it!
@DrkBndr Don't Agrre with you in that sense, Splatton had a full complete single player mode.
Lots of weapons, in RAW numbers it seems like less content but to me ARMS is a much simpler game than splatoon in terms of arenas and general content.
That's it! I 'll go digital with this one!
@BionicDodo Yes That is What I did, I have preordered already because is Nintendo, but my point stands, I believe have a general bad price scheme for too many things.
The Dock for example is more expensive than a Pro controller, I am afraid is what this president is doing to nintendo.
It's probably going to get more when there are more updates
@UK-Nintendo I am getting mine for £38. It is true. Physical is cheaper
This is why I got a 256gb sdcard. Going all digital unless it's a game I'm not sure I'll want to keep. So arms will be a day 1 physical purchase. Then traded after a couple weeks if I don't love it.
@AlbertXi It's not so much about "how much content" but the worth and reusability of what's there. Splatoon's multiplayer started off bare bones (inb4squiddonthavebones) but I still found it to be far more substantial than that "full complete" singleplayer mode. I'd expect a similar deal with ARMS unless they can get some good AI going for singleplayer fights.
@Grandpa_Pixel 👍🏻
I'm still going to get a physical copy so I can hold it in my own 2 Arms.
@AlbertXi Zelda is £60, so yeah £50 seems about right for the RRP.
@Donutman I'm thinking the same. So far I only have downloads (apart from the Zelda day 1 cartidge) for the same reason, I wanna have the convenience, but also on fence with ARMS so may get the cartridge. The Test Punch could change my mind
That's very efficient, but not very surprising. MK8D was about 6.5GB right? Approx. 5 times as many stages and characters, plus battle modes. ARMS also uses some assets repeatedly, such as the arms themselves, with colour and stat changes. An over-simplification, I know, but it seems logical to me.
Very impressive though - Nintendo is trying to make sure that we don't run out of internal storage too quickly, and I like it. Their bespoke engine must be very well designed.
@Linoshi If you're wondering if there are actual cutscenes, no. Single player is just battles. There are some other modes, but in the end the entire game doesn't require a whole lot more than the 10 fighters and a couple of stages. Not surprised it's only 2.2 GB.
Where have you found it at that price? Cheapest I've come across is £41 from base.com @Grandpa_Pixel
I'm still on the fence over buying this game.
I'm hoping the test punch thing will help convince me but either way if I do buy, it would be a physical copy as it'll be cheaper. I just don't see the point in downloading a game when it cost so much more.
Maybe I'm just a scrooge but I'd rather save some money over what is often a very minor convince of having all my games on a single memory card.
The Game cards are so small these days so it's no big deal to take them with me on the odd rare occasion I take the Switch out of the house.
Why pay more when you're getting less is my Moto when it comes to physical / downloadable games
@Octane I have to say I find this rather disappointing and I feel like this has been shamelessly held back for the eventual ARMS 2 to seem like they're responding to fan feedback.
I struggle to want to invest in any fighting franchises due to this bare bone approach. Though, I've been told the game will be updated as Splatoon was so I guess we'll see.
@G0dlike Tesco Direct have it listed at £44.99 at the moment and with voucher TDX-GHWP (£5 off a £40 spend) you can get it for £39.99. You can also apply any Clubcard points that you might have for extra savings...
Physical cartridge !
@Linoshi Yeah, it will get free updates. I share your point of view, I couldn't convince myself to buy SFV for the same reasons. If you're not into multiplayer, fighting games are almost always bare bones. That's why I wanted to see some sort of story mode, cause Splatoon did a pretty good job IMO. In ARMS you just fight against the AI and there's an 11th boss character at the end. I wish there was more, but there's at least something I guess.
I'm still skipping this one....for now anyway
I really love how how the attention went from this seems like a decent to great game or can it pull a splatoon to full-on Twintelle Thiccness.
Seriously she is the only thing I hear about this game lately.
wow that is small
@Curlynob ah cool! Cheers for the heads up!
@antster1983 Of course, they have a lot of experience compressing things from the n64, GameCube days
@AlbertXi I don't see a problem with it considering more free updates will be added on to the game. So more characters, stages etc.
@xxAcesHighxx That's how I've always been with Portables as well, whereas with home consoles it's a mix of physical and digital.
2.2 GB is not much! Nintendo's games always occupy relatively little storage.
@G0dlike It was £43 on Amazon and I used a £5 off to bring it down to £38. Amazon helped a lot with my Switch prices lately so I figured they were safe hands for ARMS
its not gonna take up any room for me
Wow! I was afraid I would have to get a micro sd card! I probably will after splatoon 2 though.
Wow, Nintendo's releasing flagship games at 2.2GB and the western AAA publishers keep pushing patches that are 22GB. Someone's doing it wrong, and it ain't Nintendo.
Tough choice for me. This is game that feels like it would benefit from digital, and yet....that box art....
pre-ordered Amazon £43 - £2 prime discount - £5 code = £36. Worth the punt and will get £20 trade-in after a month if it doesn't hold interest. Hard to see me not getting £16 worth of fun out of it. That the cost of a couple of cups of coffee and a sandwich to share around these parts.
Nintendo sizes are small because their code is super cleaned. Typical day one patch on my PS4 are bigger than this and those rarely contain graphic assets. It helps that they are using custom single game engines (although Odyssey looks to be built on the Zelda BOTW engine)
Fair enough! Was that some kind of generic £5 off voucher or some personal credit you had to use? @Grandpa_Pixel
@G0dlike It was a VG5OFF40 promotion. It expired at the start of May if I recall. I am always on the look out for cheaper prices so I was a fool not to pick it up at that sort of price
Makes sense! I used it for MK8DX, Didn't even think about using it for ARMS. 🤦♂️@Grandpa_Pixel
I'm getting Splatoon 2 and ARMS digitally. Those are games that you want to play in short bursts and play often over the course of a long period of time. It's mainly a convenience factor so I don't have to keep switching cartridges.
I pretty much always go physical if i can, just because of potential to trade the game in if i get bored with it.
Well it could have been lower, it isn't so much content rich. Anyway I think I'll buy it, but I would have been better with a 40€ price tag for the cartridge, and so should cost the digital version.
If only developers all around were like Nintendo.
@Tetsuro What's not content rich about it?
@Jessica286
Oh, the power of compression like WinZip / WinRAR.
Like LEGO CITY Undercover Switch.
From 20 GB to 7 GB on Switch.
@Nintendoforlife I mean it's not immense like Zelda nor Mario Kart 8. I'm not saying it's dry, at all, but it's still a 10 fighters 10 stages game with nice bonuses. It should not be so costly to make it a 50 euro game.
I'll buy it, but I would like to see it sells in the millions instead of those '800.000' copies (because I would like to see a sequel of it).
Impressed.
@Tetsuro It's reviving free updates similar to Splatoon which will include more stages and characters. But even if it didn't receive these, a game with features such as online has more replay value than a game such as BOTW if you like it.
@Nintendoforlife It's not about replay, it's about content. A Ferrari cost that much also because has an high cost of production. Some customers requires big assets to give out big money.
About the free content it isn't included now in the package.
@Tetsuro I disagree, depending on the game both matter. When you're talking about BOTW replayability doesn't matter, since you get a ton of hours from your first playthrough. When you're talking about a game with less content as you say Arms has, it definitely matters if that content is fun to play over and over again.
Not surprised, Nintendo is generally very good at compression. Super Mario 3D World was less than 2 GB on Wii U and it was one of the console's best games.
@Nintendoforlife But what does it have to do with the high price needed to recover the money spent for developing it? It's obvious that if I spend 60 millions I want to price my game higher than a game where someone else has spent only 8.
@Tetsuro Your posts were explaining why you didn't think it was worth its price tag. My posts were explaining why I did think it was worth the price. I'm not sure where this development talk is coming from.
Nintendo are programming gods and it shows time and again.
@Nintendoforlife With content rich I meant that, 10 characters plus 10 'rooms' isn't high content. Though 1-2-Switch was so much weaker in that department.
I think it can be a very good game eventually, but lowering its price would've been better.
@Tetsuro I know and I said in my opinion free content, and replayability value makes it worth the price.
I'm just gonna put this on my internal hard drive and keep it with me forever.
Nintendo, the Compression and Efficiency Queen strikes again.
well, the Switch is in between 360/PS3 and X1/PS4 power, and most 360/PS3 games are around 4-7GB, so this is either super compressed file, or it's a way short game, which really gives me concern.
A little on the expensive side for my taste for being a multiplayer only game. Waiting for a proper discount will probably mean that the servers are empty by the time anyways, so i'll pass on this one.
@hYdeks It's not multiplayer only, should have a good single player experience like Super Smash Bros, with minigames between fights and the likes.
They take the same approach as Splatoon with giving out free content later down the road,, but Splatoon was always 39,99 and this is 59,99!
Doesn't strike me as a $60 game. They are definitely leaving out a lot of content just so they can update for free in the future.
Well actually, that's more than I thought. Splatoon was only ~1,6GB when it was released, so 2,2GB seems pretty big to me...
Does Nintendo Life realise DLC content takes up content? In a few months the game (with DLC) will take up a lot more space.
