Oh Nintendo, with this free update for Mario Kart 8 you are really spoiling us! Sure, we're grateful for stability and the ability to purchase the awesome new Animal Crossing x Mario Kart DLC, but let's face it - today we are all about the brand new 200cc speed.
This face-melting new difficulty is sure to make even hardened Mario Karters weep.
But how fast is it when compared to previous difficulties? Watch on and find out!

Very fast.....other then Excite Bike and Baby Park, I'm running into walls or off cliffs More then I'm driving on roads
Cool comparison! Hey, what tires were you using? And is braking really crucial?
Looks like megaman driving in those videos
I gave it one try last night on the new course and I was flying into walls and off the track a whole lot. I can definitely see braking becoming a newly required skill here.
MooMoo Farm is way more fun in 200cc.
@RedDevilAde Well it is Mega Man... Sort of.
It's the Mega Man Amiibo costumes for the Miis.
I haven't scanned any of my Amiibo into Mario Kart 8 yet since I don't usually play as Miis but I'm really really liking the way the Mega Man one looks.
If only 200cc driver could stay on the road/track then the comparison would be really exhilarating.
At least get someone who can drive competently!
200CC has really breathed new life into Mario Kart, period! I see a lot of people around the web (not just here on NL) talking about needing to add braking into their skill sets. That's definitely one way to do it, but I find you still don't have to brake in 200CC. Most people probably take every corner on every track in a drift...the key to not braking in 200CC is to form your drifts a bit earlier than you're used to. You can start drifting well before the corners, and due to the speed difference, you whip around them in a way that you can't quite do in the slower modes.
Now if only they'd fix up battle mode...
I'm beginning to think that the people complaining about the person playing in 200cc haven't actually played the mode. It's very difficult, even for people who are experience Mario Kart players. I've been driving off the track and crashing into obstacles very often. It's much more difficult than it might look.
One of the tricky things with 200cc I've found is the sheer distance you get from jumps, such as the one on that circuit. You've got no time to start your powerslide so you really have no choice but to either brake or take to the grass. On Toad Harbour you fly right over the second jump before the canopies. You really need to rethink your entire approach to the tracks, which is a brilliant way to keep you playing. I haven't got a single star on any 200cc cups yet.
K, that was loud.
But really, how fast is it? Somebody point me to a link somewhere. I mean MK has been out for years, surely somebody must have done a KPH type of thing. Or at least % increase? 100cc is 25% faster than 50cc, 150cc is 25% (or maybe 50%) faster than 100cc.
I have to say, in every video I've seen, I've really felt this looks more like 250cc than 200cc based on differences in speed between 50, 100, 150 and now 200. though I've never known if the increase was incremental (25% more, 25% more, or exponential (25% more, 50% more). If 50 to 100 to 150 was exponential then it would explain why this looks like 250cc to me.
More importantly - how do I brake? It's not the drift button R is it? I know L is reverse, or items. OK, I don't know buttons at this point, I just drive and drift and occasionally use an item. I keep letting my finger off of the gas to brake but thats almost an instant dead stop which is hard to recover from.
In some places with multiple turns, drifting is not a good option for exactly the reason you mentioned, @Tsurii897 . I find I'm playing 200CC like the SNES/GBA versions of F-Zero...accelerator at all times, except when taking hard turns: then I let up on the gas, drift around the corner, and then hit the gas mid way through the corner. There have been a few moments now where I've purposely nerfed my drifts to prevent gaining that speed boost, haha.
@rjejr Braking is done using the B button. The trick is that you have to lightly tap B while still drifting and holding A so that you slow down for the turn while keeping your turbo going. You will slow down but the turbo will then boost you up to speed again, sorta similar to Kirby's Air Ride. It takes a bit of getting used to since there's never been that much of a need to brake before in MK.
@rjejr - B is for break!
@rjejr The brake button is 'B.'
While I'm still getting used to this, I find that for the majority of turns you actually need to brake for, you just need to hold the the brake button for maybe a quarter of a second. For the the tighter turns a tad longer; all awhile still keeping the accelerator engaged and drifting. You don't want to brake too long as you'll lose too much speed and negate your drifting.
I never thought I'd say this but I often feel relieved getting lightning bolted in 200cc, which gives you a sec to breathe and cruise along at what seems like 150cc, lmao!
If you're a glutton for punishment go ahead and get into a 200cc worldwide or regional room. I tried it, but I really need to improve much more lest I lose all my VR Trooper points. ;P
It is much more fun. I haven't really used breaking yet. I seem to be able to manage on the tracks I know and like best.
I am surprised 200cc just was released && the poster completed the whole grand prix already. by now, probly even have all 3 stars by now!
So brake or break is it?
I will try it later today. Along with Mewtwo. DLC day for me today.
@sinalefa
Break your Speed by using Brake!
I take it that to see the 200cc mode you have to have completed the 150cc mode?
I ask as we don't have the 200cc mode showing and we've downloaded the update and all DLC
Break yourself
Brake your car
Sooo...thats the first time in Mario Kart history that the break button actually has a function eh ?
@FubumblR @Gerbwmu - Seriously? B? Thanks, I'm going to go try it out right now. I'll let you know how it went.
On Rainbow Road at 200cc, it doesn't matter what button the brake is. Excitebike and BabyLAnd I managed to get by on drifting. So 200cc is still a work in progress.
@rjejr HEH! I wore that shirt today. But the background is orange not blue. LETS GO METS!!!!
Could've been a better comparison video. Needs items and coins turned off, and for the driver to practice the course in 200cc until he completes it without going off the track. But I guess if the bare minimum of what this video was supposed to do was demonstrate that 200cc is faster than the other classes, then it at least accomplished that much, but we still don't have a clear idea of how much faster it actually is.
I have three stars in all cups and all classes, but 200cc is on another level. I stopped using sponge tyres ages ago, but they looked really good on the P-Wing so...wow, car could barely hold a straight line!
I'll try the advice of starting the drift early and maybe switch to off-road tyres. It was a lot of fun in mushroom cup, but I was luck to finish in the top six - when I managed it!
@mrchills - The Mets were my adopted team when I lived in NY......back to Tigers now that I'm home again.
@rjejr - I did really well in the NLife Tourny when Baby Park and ExciteBike were chosen...the rest was me trying not to come in last. Big Blue got me some points too for some reason.
Wow, i hope everyone at NL isn't that bad at 200cc, i could rek them all. Im sure lots have already said this, but it you hold the drift and accelerate button, then press brake while holding down the other two buttons you will slow down and keep the drift, as lonf as you dont slow down too much. I found this makes it much easier. Nevertheless this gamw is now constantly putting me on edge, and having to brake really improves the metagame. I see competitive Mario Kart being more likely than it used to.
Okay it is faster, but it's not THAT fast. Calm down everyone.
Fast and chaotic just the way I like it. Definitely a perfect speed setting for Mute City and Big Blue. Honestly, at this point Nintendo could just make an entirely new cup call F-Zero Cup and I'll be okay with it, just include Port City, Sand Ocean, Red Canyon, and Firefield as the four tracks that accompany it.
200cc is "Ludicrous Speed"
EDIT: For some reason the embed code didn't work...
https://youtube.com/watch?v=ygE01sOhzz0
200cc is more like 250cc lol. I actually though the only difference in each class was the A.I. getting better as the speed wasn't so noticeable. But now, it's really noticeable ! It got way more fun though that's for sure
50cc compared to 200cc...
It is really hard. Managed to gold the mushroom cup tho. Start those drifts early, braking is for wimps lol
I've never braked in 200cc. I just see the turns coming and drift earlier than usual. With this tactic, I got 3 stars on the 200cc Mushroom Cup on my first try.
great addition, got 4 cups on 3star level now, so once you get the hang of it, it definitly possible. Whoever said braking is not necesary has not tried a cup other then the mushroom cup.
I played 2 Cups of this yesterday. I never needed to brake, it's all in the drift timing. I was always very good at Mario Kart anyway, it IS one of my favorite franchises after all.
@Reusinck Braking ISN'T necessary, I did the Shell Cup and the Flower Cup and had no problems.
@Dolphin64 Try playing Neo Bowser City without braking
Ack I haven't been able to play 200cc yet, nor the new DLC because I don't want to be 'that guy' and take my console out of my nephews room, and I also don't want to play it IN his room because then he whines in my ear that he wants to play Lego City just because I am playing something even though he hasn't touched the console in weeks.
Kids are weird.
@Grumblevolcano I don't have that DLC pack yet, but when I do, I'll be sure to do that.
@AshFoxX Indeed they are. But just buy your own, god knows Nintendo needs the support anyway.
@Dolphin64 it IS my own, its just in his room because it used to be my room and he liked to play it, which I encourage. His mom says she will buy him one but she is dragging her feet about it, and I don't make enough to buy game consoles for my sisters kid lol!
@mrchills - I don't think i't s a shirt, I think i's a photo of the caps they gave out last year - we have 4 of them. Mr. Met is on the front of the cap where the NY should be.
" It Might Be Fast, But It Isn't Sonic Fast."
Been playing a bit of 200cc lately. I got lucky and winged a Gold trophy in the first retro cup (no stars though). Got Bronze in the Mushroom. Haven't placed in any other cups yet but Baby park and Exite Bike are fun as heck. My low "saved by Likatu" rating sure has taken a beating from playing 200cc modes.
I placed 3rd in an online 200cc 8-cup tourney which isn't saying much as there weren't that many participants. My last three races were 2nd place so I'm definitely imporoving. The key to turns is to tap the brake as you enter the drift, while holding accelerator the entire time. I'm getting better at it. Don't release the accelerator while braking or you will lose all momentum.
Don't bother with right analog for acceleration. It feels too confusing IMO as I'll try to steer with the right stick or accelerate/brake with the left. I'm ambidextrous when it comes to gaming but I tend to get dislexic with any kind of dual stick control scheme (Probably why I suck at modern FPS - I am by no means dislexic, but I just struggle with dual stick games because I get the stick functions confused).
Also light/middleweight characters rule in 200cc class because you will want to optimize your cart combo for high acceleration and tight handling rather than good top speed.
@AshFoxX lol I'm the same, my nephews would LOVE a Wii U like mine, but it hasn't happened yet, and as much as I'd like to I can't afford to be that good of an uncle. Have tried to win them one but no luck yet! An official price drop in the next 6 months would be great...
Its no joke but once you understand you have to BRAKE at the same time you hold the gas around corners while you drift youll be legit ~
Thats the key tip of the day ~
I'm doing fine not using the brake. You need to know the circuit and anticipate the corners so start drifting earlier. If I'm not getting all the stars is because, well, you know, shells and that. That's the fun part anyway!
@AshFoxX Oh, sorry. I didn't know.
