@Whitestrider Original copies of these two games go for way than $35, especially Starhawk (which never got a US release). It may not be your thing, fair enough, but there's value n these getting reissued.
@boneyard I suppose it's possible that Lego might be joining up with Nintendo to make something other than toys, but it's pretty unlikely. I get that it might've been better for them to add 'likely' or something like that to the sentence, but this doesn't strike me as a 'games journalist not doing their work' scenario.
@sixrings Alien, Predator & TMNT are big, still relevant franchises, and those retro games were tied to big releases (Capcom's arcade stick plug n play for AvP, TMNT rerelease was actually published by Ubisoft who already had the TMNT licence). Those are pretty low-risk compared to putting out say, a Goonies collection.
Anyways, this is a great article! Far too many people think putting out old games is free money which is obviously not the case. Still, we've been getting a lot lately between the 'mini' consoles, Arcade Archives, and various other one-off digital releases & collections.
It's a bit unfair to call out Sega for giving us Sonic over and over - they've reissued a lot of gems through Sega Ages and the Genesis mini. If Sonic helps sell these projects, so be it.
@Megal0maniac There's nothing yet listed on Nintendo's 'sales & deals' page. I hadn't heard about this, which ACA games are on sale in Europe? Is it all the non-Neo-Geo stuff?
A good read, but I don't see this happening, at least not as presented in this article. It's mentioned that MS is willing to let third parties tackle their IP and the article suggests Nintendo can help oversee the project. But I don't think Nintendo would help unless it's a Switch exclusive, and MS won't farm their IP unless it's for an Xbox exclusive.
I think having Nintendo on board would be an important part of this project, as they are sometimes able to get the best out of developers working for them - think Silicon Knights, Left Field, Monster Games, etc.
Does this person have any credibility when it comes to rumours? It would be great to have confirmation on this before the March deadline to add money for WiiWare games.
Way too many people in this thread seem to be taking this personally, as though it's an affront to videogames. Nobody is going to take your games away, let's make sure we help those who need & want it!
@YummyHappyPills I respectfully disagree. QA testers are not addicts under the guidelines. The article states one of the symptoms being "impaired control over gaming", so if the QA tester can control their gaming urges after work, they aren't considered addicts. Similarly, if they are playing something other than what they are testing while at work, they may have a problem.
I just heard 'Supermarioland' recently, when the track was featured on an episode of Retronauts and I started googling to find out what it was. I was wondering why I hadn't heard this song when I was younger, and now I know why!
@Joker13z Fair enough, my friend. Having looked at the blurb on MC, I see your point. I think it's fine to give it a low score if they feel the challenge isn't there, though I agree they were a bit douchy in how it was explained.
People, please don't sweat if this game gets a low score that drops its aggregate score. There are enough over-inflated reviews out there, we shouldn't complain about reviewers giving their honest opinion.
@Falkor Sites need to make money to keep going. With more and more people using ad block, they need to make up that revenue somewhere. As long as they disclose that they are an affiliate, which they did, I don't think it's a problem.
So many people saying Tingle is creepy and unsettling. But that was the point! He first appeared in Majora's Mask and really helped define that you were no longer in Hyrule, you were in a strange, bizarre land.
So if you think he's creepy, fine. But to suggest he be taken out of all Zelda games? Please don't!
I don't think Nintendo doesn't want to work with Lego, their deal with K'nex probably prevents it. It's possible at the time Lego wasn't interested in this license or K'nex offered more money than them, or were the only ones to come to the table.
People say the death of this (and the music games) was due to the games being 'milked' with too many released in a short time frame.
I disagree. These things always seemed like fads right from the start, pumping out as many as you can before people move on was the right strategy (from a business perspective).
More obscure games are being released that haven't officially been available in decades!
And everybody's complaining that that the games they can get everywhere else aren't included. * sigh * Almost 100 games for $60, when most clones don't come with anything and people are still complaining.
Anyways, do we know if any of these are arcade versions?
@faint Because some gamers are insecure and think this will mean the end of hardcore triple-A video games. See also: resentment towards casuals, gamergate, hatred of mobile/motion gaming, etc.
@YeshaYahu5417 The NES Mini isn't exactly an original concept - companies have been making officially licensed plug and play consoles for over a decade.
I'm guessing the included games are all off cartridges, but if this has a bunch of arcade games, I'd get it.
@ImDiggerDan Reading your comments in the other story's comments and in this one, it seems like you've been pretty level -headed about the whole thing. I'm glad this worked out for you, I'll pick up the game once it's back.
@Yorumi Great, the PS4 is doing well! It can be the best selling console of all time and the console market can still shrink. You are looking at one console, I am talking about the entire industry.
You say it's because the 'casuals have moved on'. Yes! The casuals left and as result the industry is smaller than it was. Just because you don't like that grannies played games or whatever doesn't change the fact that there are less people buying systems than there were before.
@LeRaposa What you say sounds reasonable, but those are the same things people were saying before the Wii and DS came out. Let's wait and see what happens.
Also, too much emphasis is placed on a console outselling the others. It's not the only mark of success.
@Yorumi It's not Nintendo fans saying that, it's analysts, economists and so on. Seriously, there are numbers to back this up, just look them up. Why are people so hesitant to believe this? It doesn't mean there is a crisis or anything, it's just not as big as it was last gen.
@Yorumi PS4 has sold 40 million worldwide. You think it will sell another 120 million in its second half (when sales typically start to slow)? I am not that optimistic. Look, I get that PS4 is doing well, but why are people arguing that the console market is shrinking? It's a fact, there are numbers to back it up.
@Dakt PS4 and maybe Xbox One are doing well, sure. But, Wii+PS3+360 sold more to this point than WiiU+PS4+XONE. So therefore, the market has shrunk this gen.
@Dakt The console market is shrinking, so if Nintendo is able to bring in more gamers with NX, it only benefits Ubisoft. Ubi would love for NX to be like the Wii, Just Dance sold very well on that system.
Great article as usual, but I would like to point one thing: One console doing well (PS4) doesn't necessarily mean the console market isn't shrinking. It's that Wii+360+PS3 totals are greater than WiiU+XONE+PS4. Keep up the great work!
@B238ben They'll still be at E3 with, I think, the same floor space so they won't be saving money. The last two years people cited cost cutting as the reason behind the Direct-style video, but they still rented out the theatre for different reasons.
They're trying new things, which I think is good. If it doesn't work, swing and a miss. I'm not an investor so I don't really care either way.
Games will probably still be playable behind closed doors for select press members. They just won't be available to every Xbox blog writer, Gamestop manager, etc.
@technotreegrass Huh? You can get free games by checking eshop and Miiverse every week. Buying digitally only gets you discounts. Not sure what eveyone's grumbling about, this system is way more generous than I thought it'd be.
One question: Are the Miitomo platinum the same as regular platinum? So can points earned there get free games or just in-game stuff?
I really hope that we get cross-buy, that purchases carry over, etc. But I don't think Nintendo owes it to me. Iwata talked a lot about not diminishing the value of games, and I agree that Nintendo needs to try to find a middle ground.
Don't mean to be picky, but for what it's worth, Sony was involved in video games at the time. They were a third party publisher, known as 'Sony Imagesoft'.
@ShoryukenKid I mean, I think it's great you're buddy feels that way, but certainly you can see that's anecdotal evidence, and doesn't necessarily reflect the opinions of the group at large, right?
@CosmoXY Totally agree. I was expecting some, but I'm a bit surprised there's so much of it in the comments here. Even seeing lines in the actual article like "it's not entirely clear why it would have caused upset in the first place."
I've never understood how you can tell somebody to 'get over it' when you haven't been through what they have. Or seeing lines here like 'Well, I'm an unbiased European, and I think it's fine'.
