We're no stranger to certain risqué Japanese games being censored for the Western market. Sure, this makes them more family friendly, but as we found out with the 2016 release of Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE, fans will go to great lengths to work around this so they can enjoy the full bikini experience.
NIS America's upcoming SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy for Switch certainly looks like the kind of game which you'd expect might get this treatment for its Western release. However, NIS America has issued a statement on Twitter saying that this will not be the case:
Let us know where you stand on the censorship issue of games like this with a comment below.

Gurls...
Localisation != censorship
Yeah, cenzorship. Like anyone plays games like this with 7 years old sister or something.
I already had no interest in this game, now I have even less interest?
I'm against the ladies dressed so ridiculously anyway so...yeah. Stuff like this is part of the reasons I've been disappointed with fire emblem lately. More time spent on fan service than actual game content.
I was hoping for a more fighting centric fan service focus tbh
"As for controls...You will use your entire controller."
That's all the uncensored stuff I need.
edit: Hopefully, that'll mean like one-button/tap specials/moves found in other titles like SSFIV3D and DoA Dimensions and be completely optional. And also optional auto-combos, unlike KoF XIV.
When is Senran Kagura coming to Switch?
I think Nintendo has finally realised that region locking and censorship is an unnecessary cost that affects their bottom line and angers fans.
Nintendo is finally pulling itself out from the dark ages.
@JaxxDuffer More like Nintendo aren't developing or publishing this game. They can't really tell others what to do with their game.
@JaxxDuffer Southpark games are also coming to Switch, I can't imagine Nintendo not censoring them. 🤣
Oh goody, let's do the whole censorship debate again...
Even if they did, you can just buy the Japanese version anyway.
Oh, thank Christ. It's bad enough that Nintendo thinks that the only people who buy their games outside of Japan are children that are too innocent to see scantily clad femme fatales, glad at least one company understands that that's not the case.
It's not censored because it's NOT Nintendo.
Might buy it so
I'd like an "SNK Heroes: Tag Team Frenzy" with risqué costumes for a change. Not all Nintendo gamers are straight.
Honestly, I'm really surprised there is a markt for games like these outside of Japan. Aside from that, won't buy this. There is a part of Xenoblade 2 I don't like just because of the blades not wearing a lot of cloth. I don't mind nudity, but there has to be a reason for it.
@readyletsgo
The company bringing this over to the West has been notorious for censoring stuff in the past, mainly risqué Vita games - so your 'logic' doesn't hold.
It's localization. Stuff that is normal in Japan looks pervy in Western eyes.
Personally, I like it when it's over the top and funny like in Yakuza 0. The original content in Xenoblade Chronicles X and Tokyo Mirage Sessions is more uncomfortable though, and it makes sense it got changed. To most people those weird voyeuristic opskirts are more for pedophiles. Only some otaku virgin weeaboos cry about it.
Aw... but I wanted them to remove their costumes!
Rawr!!!
@Anti-Matter : What are you doing commenting on such a FILTHY may-be-PEGI-16-and/or-ESRB-M game that deserves TO AGONISINGLY DECAY IN ETERNAL DAMNATION?!!!!!
@sillygostly
I was Joking, you know.
I typed Gurls instead of Girls for joking.
Because i see a lot of girls with you know... her fanservice poses.
And after i read your reply and checking from Online dictionary, Gosh...i'm sorry if "gurls" also = drag queen.
YES!!!! ....
Ahem. I mean that sounds fair.
“You will use your entire controller”.
Too many double entendres to even fathom...
@Nincompoop it's already on switch. sort of.
@Anti-Matter : I'm not a drag queen (last I checked), so I'm not offended.
Excellent news. Pointless censorship is one of the reasons I never bought Fatal Frame for the WiiU. If girls wearing lingerie while running from murdery ghosts is ok for the Eastern gamers it damn well is ok for the West.
Surprising, considering the source, but good news nonetheless!
Good, I'm sick of companies caving to people who aren't going to buy their games anyway. I personally have zero interest in the game so I won't buy it. It's that simple really. But some people feel they have a right to push their views on everybody else and are allowed to demand creators bow to their every whim even over harmless stuff like this.
Hopefully the tide has turned and this is the way things will be from now on. There's no point capitulating to the demands of the very authoritarian, puritanical pro-censorship brigade when you end up angering more people who do actually want to buy the game.
NIS is a great anime-game company that puts out awesome limited editions of their games and respects anime roots of their games. Way to go!
I have no problem with the company making this decision, but not sure why the article refers to it as 'not censoring' the game.
Good. As I should be. Continue the trend please. I’m tired of complete strangers (FCC + ESRB) telling me what’s good for me. That’s my job.
Not going to buy this game, but good for them! Down with censorship! Woooo
I'm torn.I'm not one to be an advocate for censorship but at the same time its shoddy to have content like this present in a game.I just find it irritating to be playing a game and then,for example,there is an awkward camera shot in a cutscene zooming in on a particular area of some character.
I am glad the devs are releasing the game they made, the way they made it without a bunch of PC crap mucking it up. If scantily clad people offend you, then videogames, by and large, aren't for you. Neither is tv, movies, music videos, or comic books.
@Kalmaro you've got it wrong dude. It doesn't matter if the costumes are ridiculous or if you like them or not, it's how the game is originally in Japan. Censorship is bad, other regions deserve to get the original game with no cut content or censorship. Also how could some skimpy outfits make you disappointed with an entire series, do you go to the beach and suddenly get depression or something? Anyways just screwing around at this point, but your opinion is trash.
Hmm, now I'm actually considering buying it. Yay for jigglies!
Cya
Raziel-chan
Cowgirl Mei for all!
Great if you don't like it don't buy it, like everything else. No need to change it for those that don't.
@Gamer83 Same. Zero interest in playing this, but watch SJW Polygon vilify anyone in the West who does.
I care more about whether or not the game is actually good than if we get some skimpy costumes. It reminds me of the frankly pathetic hissy fits people were throwing back when Bravely Default & Second along with Xenoblade Chronicles X changed some costumes. The X outrage was even more infantile since the only character who had their outfit changed was Lin (though I will admit removing the breast slider was dumb). It only ever seems to be when fanservice is involved that people seem to light the no buy torches.
@Skippercapt actually, I don't go to the beach because of what you just said. If I go to the beach it's so I can enjoy the weather and usually spend time with family. Not be surrounded by half naked people.
I understand your point with how you prefer a game should stay how it is originally, but if we take that to its conclusion then that means we shouldn't have translations made. So clearly there is a line somewhere.
Using your argument, you would be perfectly fine with this get if the ladies were never in provocative clothing originally. That way, nothing would be needed to be changed in the first place. Is that correct?
If you still have a problem then it seems like your real problem is that you just want to see women dressed proactively.
@Kalmaro Has anyone ever told you you're a gigantic prude?
I’m a sucker for SNK fighters, so of course I’m getting this. Glad the game will remain unchanged, but that 1 button special move kinda bugs me. I just have to play it myself. I think I’ll go PS4 for this one.
@Melkac Sure, but it's just their opinion and everyone is entitled to one. So I don't let it bother me.
Besides, the only way you could call someone a prude is if you can prove that there is some standard dictating how someone should react in the first place. No standard, no meaning behind the word.
Embarrassing game.
People will look back at video games of this generation and see the players as prehistoric in the way they objectify women.
That people will buy this is a sad statement about society.
Women are people and do not deserve to be made objects.
@cyrus_zuo
Bit hard to objectify a bunch of photons
@PtM Hahaha, that's my fault perhaps. That was when I was new at making 3D models. I'm still proud of it though.
No UK pal release though
Anime girls and anime girl game characters are sweet like I said before.
@PtM
People treating bits of light as if they're people, it's bloody hilarious.
Ick, this is totally not for me. Can't stand pervy fan service waifu games.
@Kalmaro The thing is, a translation is a necessary part of the game. We couldn't play the game if the language was not translated, but that doesn't compare to changing or taking out any content such as characters outfits for other regions. Its unnecessary censorship, there's no way around it. Now i'm pretty sure in your third line what you meant was if the game never had skimpy clothes in the first place but they added them i would be okay with it, if that's what you meant then no, the game should have no unnecessary changes between the versions. My problem here is with your argument, I'm happy that they didn't change anything for the american release of this game, my only problem was with what you said, and how you were disappointed that a game did not get censored which makes no sense at all. As a side note are you really trying to tell me that liking women is a "problem"? Actually liking girls is normal and not a problem in case you didn't know, that's not even what this is about. My argument is anti censorship.
Good! We have a rating system for a reason! No need to censor content unless it happens to violate a law in that region, or have a different meaning because of cultural differences(like that Luigi arm motion in MK8 that they had to change)
If a game needs a higher rating, just give it the rating and let the game developers make and release games they way they intend.
Excite!
Woohoo! Progress!
Great! Now all we need is a low price and I'm all for it!
@SLIGEACH_EIRE NIntendo may not be producing or publishing the game, but it is being released on their platform so they can request changes ("work with devs" as it's usually put) should they want to... they have form on this. However, it seems Nintendo have finally realised that they're not always right (hence a lot of decisions on the Switch feel very non-Nintendo).
While the visuals look nice on this game & I appreciate the lack of censorship, I'll wait to see how the game plays before making my mind up on buying it. A very pretty fighting game becomes boring fast if it doesn't play well.
To be fair, sometimes changes need to be made due to the differing sexual standards between Japan and the West. While altering costumes is usually going too far as long as there's no actual nudity involved, some localization changes make sense in order to hit the best rating needed for maximum sales.
For example, the original Japanese version of "Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE" received a B (12) rating in Japan. However, the whole gravure modeling chapter doesn't fly in the face of Western ideals and would've resulted in an M rating by the ESRB. Therefore, they had to make that particular change in order to get a T rating and avoid alienating a large chunk of their primary demographic. I certainly wouldn't have bought it if it had an M rating.
Of course, the reverse is also often true when it comes to violence, as you'll see many T rated Western shooters get their violence toned down in the Japanese versions in order to hit a similar rating.
Using the entire controller is the news I really care about.
Whatever though, as long as it's a fun fighting game that feels worth the money I pay for it, do whatever they want.
@PtM
I seem to have inadvertently struck a nerve. ...Sorry.
@Skippercapt No where did I say that liking a girl is a problem. That's not any part of my argument at all. My point was that, according to your statement of not liking changes to a game, you'd be fine with this game if they were originally designed modestly. Then there would not have been any changes made.
Also, translations are not always necessary, that's more of a courtesy. There are several games where they don't bother to translate stuff. You might just get audio or text translated and that's it, and even then they usually change names and jokes so that they make more sense so you still don't get a full 1 to 1 translation.
Yes! Yes! Yes!
As soon as they mentioned it was a single button game, i lost interest. Will take a loot to convince me that it will be deep enough for me to part with my money. Hmm This or the latest king of fighters? i know what id prefer. Sorry guys maybe next time.
Tatsunoko vs capcom did the simple mode a bit better, having 2 control sets, one that was accessible and another deeper one.
Of course, this is all conjecture on my part as we have not had a chance to play this yet, maybe they will prove us all doubters wrong. Time will tell.
What a oversexualized piece of dogshit.
I think I'll be buying this one...the only thing that bothers me are the too-sparkly and saccharine attack effects, but I can get over that. Glad to hear that it won't be censored. Developers need to be free to put in or take out whatever they want and dress their characters however they like, and the gamers can vote with their wallets. It's as simple as that.
@cyrus_zuo
"Women are people and do not deserve to be made objects."
Sometimes, i think like this.
Why don't the developer put All Muscular Male characters with Sexy six pack body instead of putting Fanservice girls all the time ? Do the Reversal.
Not all male gamers interested, they felt cringed instead.
Like me, 33 years old guy but adore Six pack guys rather than those Fanservice girls.
@PtM
It's short sighted because you're wilfully misconstruing the point of what I'm saying.
@Anti-Matter Hmm.... Like this?
@PlywoodStick

(Look at the shirtless male picture)
Almost.
Actually i prefer like this.
I prefer Bodybuilder looking.
OMG....
@Anti-Matter Oh okay, so not just solid, but DIESEL!
Hmm... Then how about.... THIS!?
@PlywoodStick
Eh....
That's too much for his muscle.
I feel a bit uncomfort to see his too bulky muscles.
@Anti-Matter Lol I thought so.
Okay then... This!
@Kalmaro "But it's just their opinion"
Nah it's pretty much a fact by now.
th @Anti-Matter "Why don''t developers make games full of muscular men?"
That was pretty much every single western game in the 7th generation of consoles.
If you're asking why japan doesn't make more bara games, much smaller audience compared to waifu stuff.
Use your logic, buddy.
@Melkac You are more than welcome to believe that.
@Melkac

Pssst...
I am that Muscular guys audiences.
I'm not looking for Waifus stuffs.
Btw, About Muscular guys on Western games, you're right !
Finally i can create my own "Husbando" with Handsome looking and Six pack body from The Sims 4 PS4.
@Anti-Matter "I am that audience"
You're kinda proving my point that the audience is much smaller.
@PtM
I'm pretty sure I already did
@Kalmaro Yes if they were originally dressed modestly then I'd be fine with the same brought over here. It did seem like you were saying its a problem to be attracted to females but whatever. A translation is definitely required to fully enjoy a game. I don't get what you mean by "you might get audio or text translated", no kidding, that's what gets translated in a translation. You don't get a game released in the English market with Japanese only audio and subtitles my dude, that would mean it isn't translated. But anyway, translation is not 1-1 with censorship. Censorship is never necessary and It's almost insulting when they censor games for the us like we can't handle the game how it was made.
@Skippercapt In that case I will have had you figured out wrong. My issue is less with censorship and more with the women being dressed ridiculously in an obvious attempt at fanservice. That's why if this game was censored to remove it, I wouldn't have complained.
With that thought in mind, I would prefer that games never be made in a way that has them being so objectionable in the first place so that people would even want them censored.
@Kalmaro Ok, I personally have no problem with fan service, but even if I did, I would not be okay a game being censored in different countries. I don't get you would care about animated characters in a already ridiculous fighting game having abnormal clothing, you can't objectify characters in a game, they are not people. It really doesn't matter how they dress. Sex sells, there's nothing wrong with people or vg characters being sexy, male and female characters, who cares. There are actual issues that exist, this is not one of them.
@Skippercapt It's not an issue for you, sure, but it is for others. If it were not then censorship would never have been a thing in the first place.
@Kalmaro Maybe those people should not be offended over fictional characters in the first place. If they are petty enough to care about a characters clothing then they could just not buy the game. To change an entire game for a small amount of oddly affected snowflakes just makes no sense. Censorship is bad man, stop trying to defend it.
@Skippercapt I disagree. Then again, that's just my opinion going against your own. Neither of us are really right or wrong on this.
That said, I believe that just because a character is fictional does not mean that it has no impact on someone. If they didn't then we wouldn't have rating systems for games in the first place, or anything for that matter.
@PtM
I'll refer you to my original comment.
@Kalmaro I get that, but its just an f-ing bikini as an alternative costume. It's impossible for something like that to genuinely effect a mentally sound and normal human being. Censorship is still wrong btw, and welcoming it is not cool. Although I do believe that arguing over this on the internet in this little chat room is pointless. Haven't had a good debate in a while though so why not defend what I believe. Thanks for avin a go at it with me, it's been interesting.
@Skippercapt I love a good debate! It's fun getting thoughts out there. I think when it comes to someone's clothing affecting someone it depends on the person. I don't believe that mental stability has any real thing to do with it in most cases. I'm going to assume you're not saying I'm mentally unsound and abnormal for wishing folks dressed more modestly.
@Kalmaro I'm not saying you're abnormal, I'm saying that caring about some snk girls clothing is nonsensical and being ok with censorship (Which is an actual issue we have with Nintendo) is just not right, at least to me. Not comment on your mental health, the mentality of censorship pro people appears very abnormal to me personally.
@Skippercapt is just would prefer we have games that don't need to be censored in the first place. I also feel like fan service like what's in this game is lazy. They could just focus on adding in more content or mechanics to really flesh the game out, but instead they take the easy route and focus on eye candy. I see this so often these days. It's frustrating.
My poor wallet! Darn you NIS! Shut up and take my money!
https://store.nisamerica.com/games/limited-editions/snk-heroines-diamond-dream-edition-nintendo-switch
Soooo many collectibles... cannot resist...
@PtM
That's the one
@Kalmaro Games don't need to be censored, they never have had a need for it. Also the fan service in this game is very minimal, and fan service does not equal gimped game mechanics. Skullgirls is an good example of a fighting game with fan service and beautiful animation and it's a great game. From what I saw of this game it doesn't have much fan service. It's a fighting game full of snk girls with apparently at least 2 of them having swimsuits as alternate costumes, but nothing about the game screamed fan service. I didn't see any bouncy boobs or anything else that was obviously sexual besides the alternative swimsuits which is really nothing crazy. You have never played the game are yet you're accusing it of being lazy and lacking content. Just let the game release, chill out with the blind accusations my boy. Enjoy life for some time until the game releases.
@WhistleFish Wow... That was completely uncalled for. If you have a problem with me paying attention to the site then fine but what you did was inexcusable.
@Skippercapt I didn't word my reply well enough it seems. I meant fan service in general. Not specifically in this game since we really don't know much about it. This game could be as well done as Xrd. I have no clue yet.
But yeah, I meant that in general I see games that focus more on fanservice than just buckling down in making a good game. I've seen skull girls in action. I don't like the the art style but the game oozes charm and you can tell they put a lot of work into it. I actually like Peacock (I think that's her name).
@Kalmaro Alright cool, I don't like fan service when it impedes on other aspects of games or any medium, but if it doesn't then I'm all for it.
