@shani I did say that one of the reasons is to get cheaper games. And I didn't say the games discounts were the thing Nintendo needs, it's Nintendo's competitiveness and relevance in the market that it needs. Also, how do you convince people to buy a console with few games and have the games still close to RRP? Even Xbox One and PS4 bundles are as cheap as the Wii U now, and their game sales are far better than the Wii U. Everyone who wants a Wii U likely has it, except for maybe the odd kid that discovers Splatoon or some other game.
More sales = more awareness is always right, regardless of which platform and which product. That's why companies market their product. How many indie games have gotten popular because of a sale and more people talking about it? I don't think I would ever have played Shantae if I didn't hear lots of good things about it. If it did nothing for Nintendo, then why would Sony and Microsoft consoles hold sales if they weren't making as much money?
I did read the article, 4 games a day for 4 days is 16 games (Unless Cyber Monday changes things up but i doubt it). For 2 platforms. There are about 30 games on sale on the PS Vita alone for Black Friday. And I don't need to say anything about the amount of games on sale on Steam right now. Nintendo's selection is still pitiful. Also, if you want to pay that much for your digital games, that's fine. What i'm saying is that it's not good enough. Nintendo aren't trying at the moment, and their lack of effort in competing with other consoles, PCs and mobile devices shows this.
@LemonSlice We want steam like sales for many reasons.
1. It helps Nintendo remain competitive with other platforms by enticing people to their platform with their exclusive games, and lowering hardware/software prices can do this very well, especially with a marketing campaign behind it. Something Nintendo ABSOLUTELY NEEDS at the moment. 2. Games that are cheap enough can go into impulse buy territory. Granted, they shouldn't be too cheap, but Nintendo has never priced their published games competitively on the eShop. Any Wii U owner would buy Mario 3D world for £15. £30? Not so much, especially if a physical disc copy is cheaper. 3.More sales = more awareness of said game via word of mouth. Most games that have had a steam sale sell better even when the price has returned to normal. 4. Most people are strapped for cash/stingy and want to get the games they desire for the best possible price. I'm not personally averse to paying more but I would rather pay less.
Racing to the bottom is not a good idea long term, but if you are fast becoming irrelevant, you probably do need to compromise a bit. Microsoft did this with the Xbox One, and it's sold decently as a result (although that's another story). Nintendo needs to do this too, otherwise they will be forgotten and people will move on from Nintendo platforms.
As for the selection itself, it's absolutely pitiful. Where's Codename Steam? Where's Bayonetta 2? Where's all the other games that didn't sell well?
Don't mean to sound too pessimistic, but it really hasn't been a good year this year for Nintendo. All the goodwill from Super Mario Maker, Splatoon, Xenoblade X and the other success stories drowned out with censorship, their poor E3 showing, games being delayed and replaced with quick cash-in games that should be eShop releases but instead are being sold for much higher than they should.
Looking forward to next year though, hopefully will be a good swansong for the Wii U and Nintendo will get into gear again.
I bet if this was any other localisation team (NIS America, Atlus, Ghostlight, or even Square Enix themselves ) this would not have happened. Because it's Nintendo publishing and localising the game in the West, they feel they need to protect the kiddies that largely play way more violent games on Xbox or Playstation consoles or mobile games.
If Native Americans are offended by the Tomahawk class, they should vote with their wallet. And changing from an "offensive" stereotype to another "offensive" stereotype is just plain stupid. Stop with this nonsense Nintendo.
Despite this purely being corporate rhetoric, what else can they really say? I've got to say I wasn't impressed with Nintendo's E3 and how much they relied on us being wowed by Starfox. They need more.
Having said that, looking forward to Xenoblade Chronicles X. At least this game looked great from the beginning.
@peach64 Exactly how I feel. Being a PC gamer, I've gotten used to downloading my games, rather than buying them physical. This generation, due to pretty good sales on PSN, i've went digital on a console for the first time. I'm now starting to buy digital games on my consoles now because they are cheaper than tracking down a physical copy, especially for rare games.
A few years ago, I would buy digital on PC, physical for everything else. As long as the sales are good, I will continue to buy digital games. I do believe in the choice however.
It does perplex me as to why Nintendo's own games are so expensive on the eShop. If they're not going to spend the money on shelf space and banners in stores, why keep the prices RRP? Court the retailers, or try your hardest selling your games on the eShop. Doing nothing isn't helping Nintendo at all.
I'll happily buy it if it is a meaty handheld that I can take on the go. Not too bothered if it is a home console (or a hybrid), but we'll just have to wait for a proper announcement.
I'm just hoping that the NX is a beastly new handheld. If it's a home console, then it will not sell if it's weaker than the PS4. Unless it's a hybrid console, which i might also be interested in.
We'll just have to wait and see though, I never take any sort of rumours without a huge grain of salt.
@skywake I see. I wasn't aware that they offered Steam keys. That's a little bit better. Still, I don't really like the idea of streaming games. I at least like the game files to be on my hard drive, whether in physical or digital form.
A lot of people here that prefer physical releases. While I prefer physical releases on consoles (I've only went digital on the PS Vita), on PC, I always go digital. On PC, you have the ability to bypass DRM in the event a company goes bust or offline and becomes abandonware. And lately, a lot of games sold on different websites are DRM free, which means you can download 10 installers and back them up to 10 different storage locations. PC is by the safest platform for downloading digital games.
I'm aware of the recent shutting down of the Onlive service, which meant everyone lost access to their games, and that this could happen to other storefronts. People do have to remember however, that nothing is finite, and that physical releases and older systems are prone to wear and tear and eventually breaking. And if you break an old system or an old game, you have to spend a lot more to replace it unless you have backed them up yourself (which is a lot harder to do on consoles.)
People don't need to be too worried about digital purchases, they'll be ways of bypassing DRM in a worst case scenario.
A shame for codename Steam and for Intelligent Systems. However, I haven't seen any sort of gameplay or marketing by Nintendo at all. Even though the Wonderful 101 did badly, I had at least seen some gameplay footage of it before it was released. Why does Nintendo think it's acceptable to release a new IP so far under the radar that I don't even know what it is before its released? Where is the marketing Nintendo? Why bother making it if no one knows about it?
In my opinion, this game is very unappealing to look at and did not get me interested at all. I could at least see the appeal in other games that bombed like the Wonderful 101. Games like this bombing has shown how niche Nintendo has become, even in it's homeland.
I've never understood the fascination that big companies have with mobile games. While it has become an emerging market and many games make a lot of money (either through ad revenue or through microtransactions if they are free), I do like the idea of owning my games and don't like the idea of free to play at all. Like others have already alluded to in the comments, many mobile gamers have NO brand loyalty and only play the games that are trending, with social media keeping them relevant until the next thing goes viral. Why would you have all your eggs in one basket (in terms of game development, I know Konami has other areas they make money)? It's such a volatile market, and one that possibly won't even SEE your games, nevermind care about.
For me, this announcement really means "we can't make money providing great gaming experiences, so we've decided to focus on taking as much as possible while giving as little as possible". And for me, this may have well have been an announcement of their departure from video games, as I'll bet the F2P games they create are reliant on online servers, which could go south if Konami still doesn't make money.
It's a shame that more and more companies are moving to this, I'm dreading the day where console/handheld development shifts to mobile platforms instead of PC, and all the games that get released are F2P abominations.
The whole amiibo situation really has left a rotten taste in my mouth, and has completelu put me off buying any more. This agnostic attitude is going to extend across the board except the most enthusiastic Nintendo fans and collectors.
Hooray! Just need to do away with the 3DS being region locked and I'll be a happy chappy.
Love reading some of the pro-region locking arguments here. Region locking doesn't make localisation any more likely in my opinion. You just need to look at all the niche JRPGs being released on Sony's systems to realise this. Most games are still localised, even when you can buy a copy from another region. Gamers had to BEG to get Xenoblade Chronicles on the Wii to be localised. And I imagine that Fatal Frame 5 is being localised due to a lack of games on the Wii U.
Region free consoles give players the ability to buy a game that would not normally be allowed in their region, encouraging more sales. Simultaneous releases would encourage people to buy their games within their region rather than import the Japanese version (usually released earlier than other languages). Better to have the game than to have two separate consoles, one of which only the most enthusiastic of importers would get much use out of.
Finally, the Vita is region free, and there was rampant piracy and jailbreaking on the PSP. Probably not to the degree of the DS but it shows that piracy was due to anti-piracy measures on the DS were inadequate, not region locking, otherwise the Vita would most likely have been region locked too.
As long as it's like Oracle of Ages/Seasons (two separate games with similar mechanics but different stories/characters) then I'm not too bothered by this. Those games were both very good and I'd trust Nintendo that they'd give us their money's worth. If it's like Pokemon with reskinned levels then I'll only buy one of them if I buy it at all.
This sort of heavy-handed nanny state nonsense brings my blood to a boil. There have been two studies about violent media and the video game one has shown to have had NO effect on children. I'll link the newspaper article here, which has a link to the Journal in which the study can be found.
Allowing your child to play M- or 18+ rated games does not make you a bad parent. I played Doom on SNES when I was 3 years old and games like Duke Nukem and Quake when I was 7, both supposedly very impressionable ages. This has had no bearing on my behaviour whatsoever. I never attack anyone and don't think about hurting others at all. In fact, I didn't even understand Doom properly when I first played it.
This is once again, the age old argument that the government likes to blame video games even when there is EVIDENCE AGAINST INCREASED VIOLENCE AS A RESULT OF PLAYING VIDEO GAMES.
@Quorthon is completely correct about this. Parents need education about what is appropriate for their children and what they can handle. Teachers should NOT be butting in about what a child does after class. Anyone who supports this needs to wake up because no form of media will ever make a person unstable. Anyone who performs acts seen in films, books, comics or video games are most likely mentally unstable to begin with. And infringing on access to media will stifle creativity, expression and more likely PROMOTE such crimes rather than prevent them.
@potatomage7 Android tablets can be very cheap. Smartphones tend to be expensive for some reason, but you can get a decent tablet that can handle anything Nintendo is likely to put out for less than £100. Have a shop around, you don't need top end smartphones to play games on android.
I love how the analyst get news from Nintendo that they have been dying to hear for the past few years and some still feel the need to complain. Me personally, i'm interested in what Nintendo put out on other platforms. Even if it's just some simple games andor virtual console titles, i'm optimistic about the recent Nintendo announcements.
This doesn't bother me in the slightest, but does raise an interesting question.
What if Game Freak made a game on a non-Nintendo platform, and it became a successful series? Would they tone down development on Nintendo platforms? What if they sold the rights of Pokemon to Nintendo and became a true 3rd party developer (not a likely situation but still possible if Pokemon stops selling.)
Either way, Nintendo needs to take a good hard look at the Wii U situation and start acting to gain the 3rd parties back. I believe they will make another home console but if they are as complacent with that console as they are with the Wii U, then they might as well give up on home console hardware altogether.
As for this game, i'll maybe get it in a Steam sale.
Hopefully this statement reaches the other higher ups in Nintendo so they can continue giving us good deals like the Metroid Prime Trilogy a couple of weeks back. That's the kind of deals that they should be doing for their older titles. And despite the influx of low quality games on all digital stores nowadays, I trust Steam the most due to their feedback system. Something that the other digital stores, including Nintendo need to work on.
Right now, I seem to be the opposite of people in these comments. My 3DS collects dust while my Vita gets played when I can. Not trying to be a Sony apologist but for a gamer who doesn't own a PS3, a machine with JRPGs and PS3 ports plus PS1/PSP games suits me fine.
This is pretty stupid PR though. If you love the Vita so much, can you not convince your development teams to make more games for the system?
@einherjar It's more the fact that with a few updates, this could be compatible with many games as well as Smash Bros. It could be something great but Nintendo is once again acting later than sooner, when they are struggling at the moment.
@Dess-M-8 You are right on the money there. If the Gamecube controller adaptor wasn't going to be compatible with a lot of software out of the box, then the controller should have been a Wii U Pro controller shaped like a Gamecube controller.
After reading the news yesterday, I went from "not buying" to instant buy when I get my Wii U this Christmas". Now it's straight back to "not buying". I really do wonder about Nintendo sometimes. Only the hardcore fans of Smash will buy this adaptor for this one game.
Don't know how I feel about this. I might get a New 3DS XL and trade in my old one if the increased CPU power increases the frame rate of games and the system, with or without 3D on. If not, there's no real point in me upgrading.
Some people here really need to get a hold of themselves in saying that this DLC "ruins" the game for them. Does it utterly disgust people that much that a company might want to advertise something within another medium? Will they be racing in Mario Kart 8 searching for this car and then shut off the game if you find another racer using it? All this backlash from both people and companies of this relatively harmless product placement is completely unnecessary. It wouldn't bother me if the car wasn't in the game, but it is, and it doesn't bother me in the slightest.
There's definitely a lot more to complain about in life, and even within the industry, including from the company that allowed their employee to make this stupid tweet.
I've never had homebrew on any of my consoles, but I might get this just to be rid of region locking. One of the stupidest things Nintendo has ever done for a handheld. I won't be buying their next handheld if it is region locked.
Also, region locking doesn't make a difference if games get localised. We still have to pretty much beg for games if Nintendo or the developer doesn't want to attempt to market them. Some developers make their games download only in some regions even when they do localise them when people would like a physical copy.
DLC doesn't bother me if it has good value. I'm quite happy to spend a little bit of money for a few extra hours of gameplay in a game i've been enjoying. Expansion packa have always existed in the past, so if the DLC is substantial enough, why complain? it's when it's bad value and if the game feels incomplete without the DLC is when i refuse to buy it. I hate being prompted or reminded to buy DLC while i play the game. While Fire Emblem on 3DS is NOT a good example of how to price DLC, i felt that it taking a back seat with a substantial game and with free content being offered is how DLC should be presented. The call of duty map packs that people talk about here are in my opinion horrible value and definitely how NOT to do DLC. Overall, DLC should be seen on a case by case basis and you should make sure you know what you are getting for your money.
@Miss_Dark Why not do it the other way round? Have the Wii U version in Summer and get some momentum for the Wii U. Get a special bundle in for both consoles for Christmas. Plus, a lot of people don't double dip on two versions of a game unless they have very different content from each other (which this game seems to have), myself included.
Never the less, I am excited about the game, just disappointed in the fact that less priority is given to the Wii U when it absolutely needs it.
The stupidest decision ever. Why, why, WHY is the 3DS version being released first? Are Nintendo trying to pummel the Wii U into the grave? This will pretty much guarantee that nobody in Japan will buy Smash Bros on Wii U. And possibly everywhere else as well!
Unless the Wii U version is going to be the ultimate edition with double the content of the 3DS, I really can't see it selling as well as it should. Christmas time could change things though.
Local multiplayer will always be a better experience than online for me. Even when i am playing on pc, which the games could have servers as long as the community pays for them and plays the game. Online only multiplayer is always a negative in my books without a LAN or a splitscreen option.
@shingi_70 Cheers, always wondered why Cave shooters never appeared on PS3. Do you know why they didn't allow them to? I bet they could have sold quite a lot of their games on PS3.
@unrandomsam I know Cave were likely contractually obliged by Microsoft to put their games on the 360, but it still seems like a ridiculous decision to put your SHMUPs on it in the first place when it doesn't break four figures, rather than the PS3.
Anyway, at least the Wii U beat something. Let's hope it can gain some momentum once the PS4 launch period is over with.
Nintendo, If you can't get 3rd Party developers to make games for your system, use that money you have and BUY development studios. Make some of them develop for the 3DS while you focus on the Wii U. You NEED to have release dates and more games lined up for your console than you do right now. There are definitely some indie developers that would have absolutely no quarrel in making games exclusive to Nintendo systems.
This is in my opinion the make or break year of the Wii U. If there are no significant sales this year after Mario Kart 8,Super Smash Bros or any other of their titles, this will sell Gamecube levels of consoles and will quickly be abandoned if they make another home console.
I want them to succeed, but they really have been caught with their pants down and are still trying to do them up even after 1 and a 1/4 year. I will get a Wii U, but the question is is whether I will amass a decent library of games or buy it preowned with a few essentials.
If nintendo goes 3rd party, all i can see them producing is mario, pokemon and zelda. Nothing else. Thankfully, it will be a long time before they have to throw in the towel for their hardware, especially when it comes to handhelds.
That last screenshot looks absolutely mince. It's looks like it's a glitch it's that bad. Not that the others are any better. And yes, the virtual console is a much better alternative.

This sort of heavy-handed nanny state nonsense brings my blood to a boil. There have been two studies about violent media and the video game one has shown to have had NO effect on children. I'll link the newspaper article here, which has a link to the Journal in which the study can be found.
http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/nov/10/video-games-violent-study-finds
Re: Editorial: Nintendo's Heading For a Period of Major Change, and We Can't Fight It
@potatomage7 Android tablets can be very cheap. Smartphones tend to be expensive for some reason, but you can get a decent tablet that can handle anything Nintendo is likely to put out for less than £100. Have a shop around, you don't need top end smartphones to play games on android.
Re: Games Industry Analysts Somewhat Divided On Nintendo's Partnership With DeNA
Re: TEMBO THE BADASS ELEPHANT, The Game Freak and Sega Collaboration, is Sadly Skipping Wii U
Re: Masahiro Sakurai Praises the Achievements of Steam, Isn't Content With Other Download Services
Re: Sony: PS Vita Is Better Than 3DS And The Wii Brand Is A "Shadow Of Its Former Self"
Re: Turns Out The GameCube Controller Adapter Won't Be Compatible With Other Wii U Software
Re: Turns Out The GameCube Controller Adapter Won't Be Compatible With Other Wii U Software
After reading the news yesterday, I went from "not buying" to instant buy when I get my Wii U this Christmas". Now it's straight back to "not buying". I really do wonder about Nintendo sometimes. Only the hardcore fans of Smash will buy this adaptor for this one game.
Re: Nintendo Region Locks Consoles To Get More Hardware Sales, Says Mitchell Corp Boss
I'll agree that region locking does make people buy more hardware. Unfortunately for Nintendo, it made me buy a PS Vita.
Re: Xenoblade Chronicles Coming to 3DS in Japan
Would make perfect sense to localise this. All the voice work and translation has already been done, so why not? Why not try and get a bigger return?
Who knows, it might just make me upgrade my 3DS to the new model.
Re: New Nintendo 3DS Models Announced
Don't know how I feel about this. I might get a New 3DS XL and trade in my old one if the increased CPU power increases the frame rate of games and the system, with or without 3D on. If not, there's no real point in me upgrading.
Do like the coloured buttons though.
Re: Somebody At Ubisoft Really Doesn't Like Mario Kart 8's Mercedes-Benz DLC
Re: 3DS Homebrew Channel Reportedly in Final Stages of Development
I've never had homebrew on any of my consoles, but I might get this just to be rid of region locking. One of the stupidest things Nintendo has ever done for a handheld. I won't be buying their next handheld if it is region locked.
Also, region locking doesn't make a difference if games get localised. We still have to pretty much beg for games if Nintendo or the developer doesn't want to attempt to market them. Some developers make their games download only in some regions even when they do localise them when people would like a physical copy.
Re: Alone In The Dark is Set for Yet Another Comeback
The 2008 game is the only bad game that has the courtesy of letting you skip most of the game. At least it had that going for it.
Re: Video: Darunia Rolls and Pounds His Way Through Enemies in Hyrule Warriors
Looks good, variety of characters is always a good thing.
Would just like to point out the Stalfos that magically appears at 0:38 in the Darunia trailer. HALLO SIR.
Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Must Take Careful Steps Into Paid DLC and Free-to-Play
Re: Super Smash Bros. Hitting 3DS This Summer, Wii U Launch To Take Place In The Winter
Re: Super Smash Bros. Hitting 3DS This Summer, Wii U Launch To Take Place In The Winter
Re: Soapbox: The Nintendo Wi-Fi Disconnection Reminds Us Why Local Multiplayer Still Matters
Local multiplayer will always be a better experience than online for me. Even when i am playing on pc, which the games could have servers as long as the community pays for them and plays the game. Online only multiplayer is always a negative in my books without a LAN or a splitscreen option.
Re: Wii U Lifetime Sales in Japan Overtake the Xbox 360
@shingi_70 Cheers, always wondered why Cave shooters never appeared on PS3. Do you know why they didn't allow them to? I bet they could have sold quite a lot of their games on PS3.
Re: Wii U Lifetime Sales in Japan Overtake the Xbox 360
@unrandomsam I know Cave were likely contractually obliged by Microsoft to put their games on the 360, but it still seems like a ridiculous decision to put your SHMUPs on it in the first place when it doesn't break four figures, rather than the PS3.
Anyway, at least the Wii U beat something. Let's hope it can gain some momentum once the PS4 launch period is over with.
Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Direct Pointed to Another Wii U Retail Drought
Re: Iwata Looking To Emulate iOS And Android With A Common Platform For Future Nintendo Hardware
This sounds like good news to me. In fact, this was what should have been done in the transition between Wii and Wii U.
Re: Nintendo Has "Great Games" But Is Facing A "Structural Problem", According To Industry Analysts
If nintendo goes 3rd party, all i can see them producing is mario, pokemon and zelda. Nothing else. Thankfully, it will be a long time before they have to throw in the towel for their hardware, especially when it comes to handhelds.
Re: Final Fantasy VI On Android Is Pricey and Looks Rather Peculiar
That last screenshot looks absolutely mince. It's looks like it's a glitch it's that bad. Not that the others are any better. And yes, the virtual console is a much better alternative.
Re: Animal Crossing: New Leaf Climbs Back Into the UK Top 20
@Jamesy2013 The only colours the UK likes is the colour of football strips in FIFA.
Re: Nintendo 3DS Guide: Louvre Is Region-Free
Extend this to your games catalogue and i'll buy a hell of a lot more 3DS games. One of the biggest problems of the 3DS in my opinion.
Re: Investment Site Motley Fool Executes Spectacular U-Turn By Claiming Nintendo Will Win This Christmas
The website he's writing for says everything about his advice. Probably 180'd after his ludicrous prediction last week got slammed by comments.
Re: Oceanhorn for iOS Seems to be 'Heavily Inspired' by Zelda
While I do like the Graphics, the interface and overall art style looks a bit too much like Wind Waker for me.
