Nintendo is ending 3DS and Wii U eShop functionality with prepaid cards today, 29th August. After today, you won't be able to redeem the card directly on either the 3DS or Wii U consoles.
Maintenance is scheduled for 30th August 4:30am UTC, and if we had to guess, that's when the functionality is being removed. RIP using the touch screen or Game Pad to type our code in with a stylus...
This is the next phase in Nintendo's gradual shutdown of the eShop on both consoles. The company announced earlier this year that both the 3DS and Wii U eShop will be closing on 27th March 2023, and Fire Emblem Fates will be removed one month earlier. So we're in the final seven months of the eShops lifecycle. Boohoo.
It's not quite the end of the world yet, though! You can still add any leftover eShop cards to your Nintendo Account and spend the funds on the eShops — all of them! But make sure you get your Nintendo Switch account linked to the one you use on your 3DS and Wii U! Don't worry, if you haven't done that, we can tell you how to link your Nintendo Network IDs in our handy guide.
For more information on when the Wii U and 3DS eShops close, we've put together all the info you need, as well as a comprehensive list of the best DLC available on the eShop for both systems:

I went to buy a bunch of games off the Wii U eShop last night and I found a good portion of them on my wishlist were delisted.
I hope Nintendo and other developers involved don't let the Switch eShop get struck with the same availability issue at the end of its life.
I have decided to not add my 3DS and Wii U eshop fund as other games in physical is my main priority than digital games that I will not touch after I purchased them.
Sayonara Yokai Watch 3 English digital version, but I prefer the Japanese version in physical cartridge.
Oh well, time to focus on the Switch and other current gen system. Wii U may have been short lived but the 3DS had a nice, long run. Time to move on to the next big thing.
@Elvie which games may I ask?
Batman Arkham Origins Blackgate Deluxe Edition on Wii U is the best version of the game imo (I own and have played the Vita and 3DS versions too).
It runs almost completely flawless and have much better textures and character models than the handheld versions. And it's only available on the eShop (no physical edition).
Check it out before you buy though; it's not like the console versions as it's a 2.5D metroidvania type game with fewer enemy encounters (and the map can be quite confusing - the Wii U version does come with a 3D map though which makes it a bit easier to figure out where you're supposed to go).
It's 20 euro and I think that's a reasonable price for the game as it does offer quite a lot of content.
Maybe I should look into these fancy emulators everyone has been talking about? Hwe... Hwe... Hwe...
Glad to know that as long as I link my accounts (I think I already did) that I can still make purchases on the 3DS and Wii U eShops. I tried using my credit card on the 3DS eShop the other day, only to find that they removed that functionality months ago.
And because I am still recovering from COVID (which I finally got for the first time), I can't go out and buy any Nintendo eShop gift cards right now, since I am still isolating.
So it's good to know that I can use funds from a linked account. There's still a few games and DLC packages I want to buy on the 3DS and Wii U, but never got around to doing so, mostly because I didn't have a job that paid enough to let me buy all that I wanted until now.
Linking with the Switch works just fine, but be aware, you can’t add exact amounts. It has to be set increments which isn’t a big deal, but you’ll have money leftover. Also, most 3DS eshop games are up on the website. If you buy it from the website page, you can use exact funds and it’ll automatically download to your 3DS when you connect to the internet. Not sure how much longer that’ll be available, though
Still picking up missing 3DS and Wii U games here and there.
Actually bought NES Remix 1 & 2 yesterday. Games I should've gotten back when they came out but didn't for whatever reason. I wouldn't be surprised if we see Switch ports later down the line but I don't want to count on that.
Already played a little bit of NES Remix 1. Started by clearing all Balloon Fight stages because it's one of my favorite NES games. Quite surprised to find out how fast you have to be to get the rainbow stars.
Also picked up Bomberman '94 while I was at it. My favorite Bomberman game from my childhood, yet I didn't actually own in any shape or form, so it was about time I got it. I'll replay the story mode soon but I don't think I have a chance to play multiplayer for some time.
Just put most of the games from the 3DS and Wii U eShop on the Switch. At least add GBA and DS games to the Switch Online Expansion Pak so we still have some kind of access. As for actual Wii U and 3DS games they should be part of the expansion subscription on the Switch successor.
Yikes, well I'm definitely not buying anything right now.
Hopefully I can find some money for my remaining 3ds purchases. Wish I got back into FE sooner...
@Don
You realize that porting dual-screen games to a single-screen system is not a simple copy & paste, right?
@Thief Here are the lists for the delisted games on Wii U and 3DS.
https://delistedgames.com/all-delisted-nintendo-wii-u-games/
https://delistedgames.com/all-delisted-nintendo-3ds-games/
@Thief Futuridium EP Deluxe, Race The Sun, XType Plus, The Fall, and Ballpoint Universe.
I was also interested in picking up Tengami. However, that game was removed from the eShop as well.
I got Attack of Friday Monsters and DQ 7 & 8, might get the rest of the Picross e series too. Always hate to see games go unpreserved but hopefully places like the VGHF can help if developers buy into a secure 3rd party repository that holds code and assets for historical purposes.
@AstroTheGamosian You can buy eShop currencies through online retailers, like Amazon. You are sent a receipt with the code on it so there is no need to go to the store.
If you buy from BJ's you can actually save a few dollars depending on the value of the card.

You might need a store membership to buy it though.
Crap. I still need to pick up Kid Icarus Uprising and i’ll probably run out of time. Guess i’ll have to pay for the physical…
I’ve prioritised buying quite a few DSiWare games, because you’re only able to buy them from the 3DS eShop and not via the eShop web site. As long as you’re still able to add funds via a credit card then it’s just the 10% discount we’re going to miss out on for the moment..
Added enough to cover Fire Emblem Valentia and Breath of Wild DLC. I doubt they will do a FE DLC sale like they did with previous entries, but I got until February next year do it. Shame, I still play 3DS and Wii U (when I can), alongside PS4.
How can I check to see if I linked my accounts? I honestly forget if I ever did. Thank you in advance to anyone who can help me out here.
Yesterday I bought all Dsiware games that I 'm interesting (around 10).Also I gave a priority and bought many gift cards and redeem them on my Us New 3ds XL to buy Usa only digital games and dlc for my Us games. My European one N3dsXl I have linked it on my switch so I have 7 more months, so no worries there. So in the next month I will buy eshop digital only 3ds games (especially many great games that utilize the stereoscopic 3d). I have almost every game I want in physical (around 150 games in my collection) so now it's the time for digital only games with 3d effect. Once eshop close for good we will never have the opportunity to enjoy those games in 3d effect!
@JimmyFleck If you have some money on your 3ds or wii u account the same amount of money will show also on your switch account.
So in that way you will check if your switch account is linked.
@heathenmagic Yeah I still remember the sale on Fire emblem awakening dlc. It was incredible. The one and only dlc sales.
This week is the last for 3ds eshop (to redeem cards) and also the most dissapointment of all weeks. We expected more and more games for sale and we take nothing. Really nothing!!
Loaded up 100 dollars over the weekend.
@Guile Yes it has been a bit drab. A few interesting sales in EU but mostly stuff thats already been promoted before. You never know, we have 7 months for some surprises.
@heathenmagic I hope so, but always I worry about delisted games. An hour ago I bought Unchained blades, ikachan and kokuga on my Usa N3dsxl as these games are Usa only(Also I m looking forward for Gotta protectors). Kokuga was delisted from european eshop, this was bad as I wanted to buy it from there so I could play local multiplayer as I live in Europe. That's why for some games I will not waiting for sale in the next 7 months due to the danger of delist. But for the most of them I will wait with the hope of some sale, especially the guild 01 and 02 games.
RIP to both eShop, it was good while it last. Now both rest on the cloud with Iwata.
@Ade117 Me too
I added 100 bucks the weekend, also I had a remaining 50$ from previous months in my account, so 150$ in total will be more than enough to buy Usa digital only games(for example the two dragon fantasy games, rusty baseball, moon chronicles etc, dlc and some themes.)
RIP the "KACHING!" noise the 3DS made every time you added funds. You will be missed. Also, to put the info of my last purchases before the eShop card functionality is removed on the systems...
3DS: Kirby Fighters Deluxe (and some Ace Attorney stuff before that)
Wii U: Duck Hunt (VC, and some other VC games before that)
I’m buying a few DS games specifically as I don’t see them getting ported to the switch or a console in the near future, and maybe a couple other games while I’m at it. Added like $50 yesterday but can’t buy games because I’m waiting on more storage as I seem to of lost my old USB
@Waluigi451 "most 3DS eshop games are up on the website"
Are there any big ticket items on the eShop that aren't available on the website? I'm using the UK website for my purchases, so I don't know if region differences count here.
@Guile Yes I only heard of one of those game here in Europe. Shame they do this. I tried one or two of the guild games and they were good. I liked that Etrian Odyssey games too, not sure if they will be taken off.
@Elvie Alle shops go the same way, that's why digital is absolutely not the answer and never will be.
@heathenmagic I have all the Etrian Odyssey games(Ds-3Ds) in physical in my collection. Great games. I don't think Atlus will delist them. Also Atlus had a huge sale on Us eshop and some sales on European one the previous months. Atlus is a great company that supported 3ds until the end, also had often huge sales on eshop.
Also they gave us free 3ds themes like Radiand historia, SMT Apocalypse, Etrian Odyssey Nexus, Persona q2 etc. I also show my support to them and download some themes for my 3ds's like Etrian odyssey untold story 2, Shin megami tensei devil survivor 2 and Persona Q just for 0.99E/$ each! Excellent themes with great music!
Yes I grabbed a few in the sale, but got two physical. The costs for the others was such a lot, I prefer getting the cartridge but its the next best thing. I will check out the themes, thanks! I only have on so far as a bonus from a game of theirs. Too many games not enough time lol!
Anyone know if we can still add funds via credit card?
