Nintendo has released a new system update for the Wii U. The patch notes mention enhancements to the "overall system stability" and various other minor adjustments.
Here's what's apparently included in the Version 5.5.6 U update. This applies to both the Wii U Deluxe and Basic models:
Ver. 5.5.6 U (August 29th, 2022)
Improvements to system stability and usability
- Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience.
Dataminer OatmealDome has further investigated this latest update - discovering updates to the Wii U menu and user settings menu:
In case you missed it, yesterday marked the shutdown of prepaid cards on the Wii U eShop. This also applies to the 3DS as well:
The 3DS has also received a firmware update today. You can read more about it in our other update post. Have you downloaded this update for Wii U yet? Notice anything else? Leave a comment down below.

“This isn’t even my final form!”
Oh, sure.
I will update my Wii U tonight.
Real Stability fans wait for that Wii U port!
Serious note: haven't updated yet, but I have a feeling it has to do with prepaid eShop cards. Seeing Wii U menu has me a bit curious to that.
Whew! Finally! My Wii U was losing some stability this year.
This is the definition of putting a single bandage on someone who's fallen from a twenty-storey building.
Ok, is it just SSL certificates, or is it way more?
I absolutely love my Wii U and still have it set up next to my Switch. I still play some of the games from time to time, plus the backwards compatibility to play Wii games is great. I will gladly update my beloved Wii U.
@eaglesfly76 Glad I'm not the only one who still uses the Wii U regularly. I always find something to play on it each month, whether it's a Wii U game or a backwards compatible Wii game.
Multiple games are still on my Wii U to-do list. And the 3DS, well, I'm going through every Ace Attorney game on there, not to mention still playing Tri Force Heroes with my girlfriend and bro!
I just caught this update as I returned to the home menu after playing Phantom Hourglass. It makes me so happy that the Wii U is still relevant 😁
Favorite gaming console and it always brings me back for more
I WAS needing more room for my horse herd.
Sad as it is to see it go, I've prepared myself with CFW. At this point, I'm just curious how they will handle the shutdown. After the maintenance, will they finally change the eShop music? It's been stuck on the same theme since September of 2020, I'd be really happy if they changed it to the sentimental May 2016 theme to give it a proper farewell. Most likely though, they'll get rid of the current theme and have it play the default themes already built into the systems to put less pressure on the servers. Also, what will the eShop UI look like once it gets downsized to just updates and redownloads? I'm genuinely curious about this.
for those with Tiramisu installed yes it's safe to update
All this time Wii U was a lady underneath!
@Hask Thought I was the only one lol
Lol, I'll update my systems since I always do that. But we all just know these updates are only there to prevent us from hacking, modding, etc. 3DS has also a update.
I remember how updating was a complete mess with the beloved U. The games were amazing but aside from a few they‘re all available as ports on Switch which makes the Wii U obsolete in my eyes. Maybe as a giveaway to your nephew. Oh and Wooly World port, when Nintendo?
Had my Wii U on yesterday and it didn't ask for an update, however earlier this year I was thinking, when they stop online for Wii U will they free up more memory and CPU for gaming? A big part of the Wii U was being able to pause your game, go straight online, which worked much quicker than Xbox one I might add, and look up guides, FAQs or just a random YouTube video, then jump straight back into game. The two main games which 'hitch' when doing this are Breath of the Wild and Xenoblade X, which need every drop of memory so use more than the 1 Gig allocation.
As Nintendo already gimped the browser functionality and Miiverse closed (integrated into alot of Nintendo games), then soon Eshop will close. Will they then add a 'retirement' patch which squeezes everything into games. Wishful thinking.
I will have another look later today after I top up, as I still haven't downloaded the BotW DLC for Wii U yet.
My Wii U has been set up ever since I got it in late 2014 but I’ve made the decision that it’s time to retire it. I supported it and have about 80 physical games for it, but between the Switch, Xbox One and modded Wii it doesn’t get a look in anymore. Hopefully at some point I’ll track down a cheap back up console to mod like the Wii but for now it’s time it took its place on my shelf with all my other old consoles, ready to be set up again if I ever get the urge.
@Sunsy Also, with Nintendon't making it able to play Gamecube games natively, the Wii U has a fantastic library over the three generations it covers.
I hacked my Wii U like a man! Don't be a wimp and hack your Wii U!
Respect to the Wii U! I always have great times playing it, also I still have games on my backlog to play in the near future!
Wii u is an underrated console with a unique play style that will be missed in the future. So I will gladly update it!!
Welp, updated. And no surprise, the channels that have been discontinued (Wii U Chat, Miiverse) still haven't been removed to save space. I truly don't understand why I can't delete those channels myself even if I don't have a modded Wii U.
I play pinball on mine mostly, tho I have a ton of pretty cool indie games too. I repurchased the Switch version for the ones I care about….
@rockodoodle Which pinball games do you play? I recently downloaded Pinball Pulse: The Ancients Beckon on 3DS (DSiWare) and I’m very impressed. I was looking at Devil’s Crush on TurboGrafx Virtual Console but was not convinced from the videos I’ve watched. I’ve also looked at Gameboy pinball games too but I felt Pinball Bulse actually going plays like pinball.
@cra1g0s the Zen pinball suite…. I went ahead and bought all of them, or very close to all of them. Between those, what I have on Switch and Xbox, I ham set with video pinball for the foreseeable future….
@eaglesfly76
I have the same set-up haha
Do you still play online on the Wii U? Sometimes is hard to find players on not that popular games
@Strumpan Mine is still connected to the TV as well because it can play Wii U, Wii and GameCube games natively plus the Virtual Console games and a few scene releases such as Ocarina of Time PC port, the remaster that Nintendon't do and that runs at 60fps in a decent resolution.
@RodSD64 Awesome! I don’t play online anymore, I usually just play around with a single player game. Platformers are my favorite and the system has some great ones.
Um, my Wii U is on version 5.5.5 E and is claiming that it's up to date? Is there any way outside of the System Settings to force an update?
@Strumpan
"Also, with Nintendon't making it able to play Gamecube games natively, the Wii U has a fantastic library over the three generations it covers."
"Nintendon't"?
"natively"?

@Mario500 Are you a bot?
@Mario500 Yes, the Wii U can play Gamecube games natively (because the Wii was backwards compatible with the Gamecube), but that feature is turned off by default on the Wii U. Nintendont is a homebrew app that turns it on.
My eldest borrowed mine, during the first covid lock down. Still has it. She hasn't played a single game other than Mario Kart.
I updated my Modded Wii U this morning and all is well for anyone wondering.
