We are rapidly approaching the 30th anniversary of Super Mario Kart's Japanese release on the Super Famicom, but what if we told you that there is another SMK-adjacent anniversary happening today? We are, of course, talking about the Super Mario Kart Championships, which will be racing off the start line today in its 20th year of competition.
Ten years after the SNES game introduced us to the joys of competitive plumber racing, the Championship was formed to provide a yearly reminder of who the best driver really is. It has since continued this love of the original game, with its focus always remaining on the SNES franchise-starter instead of the series' newer additions. With events split across time trials, battle modes, match races and the 150cc Grand Prix, the leaderboard is formed and topped only by those who can compete at the highest level across all competitions.
While this is not an officially-endorsed competition by Nintendo, the community has grown in such a way that each year only attracts the top talent. This year will see the current title holder, America's Jonathan Toole-Charignon, attempting to hold onto the top spot as the competition sees the return of Sami Cetin, the UK's world record holder who we interviewed way back in 2014.

2022 will see the Championship return to Alphen Aan Den Rijn's Esports Game Arena in the Netherlands, and the venue is already decked-out with TVs and SNES consoles galore. Before the competition kicked off today, some attendees on TikTok were quick to show those of us who cannot make the event what we are missing out on β which @SMKCmaps has shared on Twitter.
While this racing atmosphere is getting us seriously envious, there is no need to worry about missing out on any of the events as the entire tournament will be streamed on Twitch with four separate channels covering all of the week's goodness. For full info on where to watch each day, be sure to keep an eye on the SMKChampionships Twitch channel and check out @SMKChamps for updates on Twitter.
The events will be running from today right through until August 27th β which will double nicely as a celebration of the game's 30th anniversary. Each day looks set to be packed full of races and battles, with the opening ceremony and Time Trial events taking place today.
Each subsequent day will have its own event focus before the winner is chosen at the end of the week. Check out the following timetable to find out each day's event and its key matches:
- Tuesday 23rd August, 2pm CEST β Time Trial
- Wednesday 24th August, 10:30am CEST β Battle Mode
- Thursday 25th August, 10:30am CEST β Match Race
- Friday 26th August, 10:30am CEST β Grand Prix 150cc
- Saturday 27th August, 12pm CEST β Closing Ceremony
Head on over to the Championships' official website to get stuck in on the week's retro racing action.

Even if I personally believe Super is the worst in the series, seeing events like these for retro games always puts a smile on my face. I'd absolutely kill to go here
@Fizza I'm of the opposite opinion, Super Mario Kart requires such precise controls, I was obsessed with shaving a hundredth of a second off my Ghost Valley 2 time (with Koopa) and I still go back to it today and try to do the same.
I actually met Sami Cetin a few years ago at a NintendoLife event at the Cambridge Computing Centre where I told him what my time was, he thought it was a good time but after 3 or 4 attempts he had my lap time beat. That was cool.
They are using the PAL version?!
Thank you Jim for the fantastic article. I was lucky to attend the event back in 2019, had a lot of fun playing time trial, match race, battle mode and 150cc GP (my favourite).
If itβs ok, Iβd like to share the link to the SMK Time Trial rankings site run by Sami Cetin which every fan of Super Mario Kart is welcome to join, itβs worth visiting just to see the current world record times for each race track.

@Spookles itβs the PAL version, original hardware and CRTVβs.
@Fizza itβs incredible to see the pro players, some people turned up just to watch it live and had a great time.
@cra1g0s itβs very addictive and a great feeling when you beat a previous best time.
The Ghost Valley circuits are among my favourites (especially GV3).
@Fizza For me, Super Mario Kart is the best of the best Mario Kart game.
I love it so much. I think Mario Kart 64 the worst Mario Kart. Super Mario Kart is much more difficult....i love this game no depends of itens...you need to be good on corners and drift. Much better than a "item focus" Mario Kart.
I love only 3 Mario Karts:
Super Mario Kart
Mario Kart Double Dash
Mario Kart 8 deluxe.
I did not had fun playing Mario Kart 64, mario Kart wii....
@cra1g0s agree so much
@signosis but why PAL? I meanβ¦ sure. But no. It runs slowly and has a squished picture. Itβs abysmal.
@Spookles PAL is what us Europeans had back in the 90βs.
The American Championship uses NTSC.
Personal, I think itβs nice PAL is used for the European Championship as both versions play very differently and require a different approach when playing.
@Rykdrew I agree, no blue shell or the regular item boxes like later Mario Karts make it a pure racer in comparison to later entries.
I accidentally qualified for the UK Nintendo Players MK8 Deluxe Championship recently. Took the kids to a qualifier, and decided to enter for the laugh. Somehow ended up as runner up, beating my own two boys in the final. Think my youngest got blue shelled on the last bend of the final track, so yeah, that went down well...
I always appreciated the challenge of this game even if I'm bad at it. These new mario Kart games are too easy and the only reason I don't win sometimes is cause I'm being bombarded with items. Super mario Kart was pure skill.
@ZapNCrap I do wish Mario Kart 8 Deluxe had a Smash Brothers approach to items, being able to turn off items such as the Blue Shell etc in a menu would be a great addition to an almost perfect game.
An update on yesterdayβs time trial event at the championship.
Sami Cetin won gold by just one second against Karel Van Duijvenboden from the Netherlands.
Jonathan Toole-Charignon from USA won bronze.
Today is Battle Mode.
Super Mario Kart is one of my alltime Favourites.
@Signosis I agree. I would love to be able to turn certain items off like the blueshell or just turn all of them off entirley.
Yesterdays Battle Mode was won by Neo who beat Geo in the final.
NeoGeo.
Today itβs Match Race which is on now.
