Nintendo has shared a list of the top 15 most-downloaded Switch eShop games of May 2020 in Europe, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons has been knocked off the top spot for the first time since launch.
Yes, Nintendo's cuddly life sim has been dominating these monthly charts ever since it arrived in March, but this month's crown goes to NBA 2K20. It might sound like quite the surprise at first, but remember that the game was reduced to just £2.49 / 2,99€ for a while in Europe - a whopping 95% off the normal retail price.
You can check out the full list below. It's based on the number of Nintendo eShop downloads (so no physical sales) in European territories during the whole month:
- NBA 2K20
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons
- Minecraft Dungeons
- Minecraft
- Thief Simulator
- Just Dance 2020
- Streets of Rage 4
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- Splatoon 2
- Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition
- Old Man's Journey
- Cuphead
- Mother Russia Bleeds
- Okami HD
- Path of Sin: Greed
If you're interested, we recently shared our May 2020 edition of the Nintendo Life eShop Selects - our list of the very best eShop games that launched last month.
Did you download any of these titles on Switch last month? Any surprises in the top 15? Tell us below.

Mother Russia Bleeds passed me by completely - and with good reason, judging by the review.
I expected to see Nba 2k20 on top after being on sale for 2.49..
Good to see Okami there.
@TheFullAndy agreed it’s a killer game.
I got NBA 2K20 for my nephew. At that price you couldn’t go wrong.
oh *****, old man's journey gettin some euro love. cool game
It's sad to not see Borderlands and Bioshock up there given the amount of content, the low price, and the excellent port jobs done on those games.
I would have liked Outer Worlds on there too, but I understand if many decided against it given the poor porting of the game.
Just remember guys, that when 2k checks there sales figures for Switch this quarter, they'll see their microtransaction riddled sports game beating out their quality port jobs of actually great games. Just hoping that people don't buy the micros and Borderlands and Bioshock still end up making more money.
Sales work unless your Nintendo and you don’t have to worry. Splatoon 2 promo worked. More repeat splatfests?
Trials of Mana didn't make the list? I am not worrying as much about Animal Crossing because of Trials of Mana. Trials of Mana is the best adventure game of 2020. Not many games successfully pull off the Legend of Zelda feel and fun. Most I was bored of after 5 hours.
@Richnj It’s May’s list and reviews were not out for 2k games.
@Woodyshoe well, they were released may the 29th, so you could’ve seen them up there, but 2 day’s is not enough I guess. They are fine packages with lots of content.
@biglittlejake hm I might give the demo a shot.
@Woodyshoe my bad. I completely missed that.
Sandisk will be pretty pleased with NBA being number one.
@Bmartin001 Ohhhh that explains it. I forgot they were practically giving the game away.
But isn't it full of micro-transactions?
Good to see Okami HD on the list.
Great game, purchased the special edition while I was in Japan.
@Richnj
Both the Handsome and Bioshock collections are in the US e-shop charts and seem to be selling just fine.
AC was finally knocked from top spot here but surprisingly it was Minecraft Dungeons, not Xenoblade that took #1
@Gorans-Cap Is Trials of Mana truly that great? I played a rom of the original and was hesistant to get the remake until hearing it was good.
@Chlocean
It's a remake. The additions that were added made the game better. I have the original Trials of Mana. It was included in the Collection of Mana set.
@Gorans-Cap Awesome. Good to hear, because I played the Secret of Mana remake, and those additions did NOT make that game better.
Thief Simulator is hot garbage, wish I never bought it even through a discount
@Lute-Waffle so you’re saying Thief Simulator is not a real steal? How ironic
@Heavyarms55 The main mode is full of 'card packs' to build a team that you either grind for or pay real world money and trade... but there are many other modes that are free of this. At full price, its hard to forgive the added expense... at £2.49 its much easier to just ignore that mode - at its core it is a solid, very well presented sports game albeit one with a bit of a steep learning curve and a storage hog (40gb+!!!).
@Woodyshoe Am really hoping we'll be getting more Splatfests after this. Can't remember seeing Splatoon 2 in the top ten for a while, I could be wrong though.
Here's hoping Xenoblade continues selling well.
I've been playing NBA and it's so good. Especially when you go in knowing that the entire creating your own team function and buying cards is just off limits, unless you're willing to spend money. It's really fun when you ignore that aspect.
You could actually grind all that out without spending money too which makes it even better imo.
@nicols Even if I were a bigger basketball fan I just don't want to support this style of game design. Sure you can just ignore the mode but by buying it at all, you're giving the impression at the very least, that you are okay with it.
And I'm just not.
