UK chart data is now in for the week ending 9th May, revealing that Animal Crossing: New Horizons has managed to jump back into top spot.
The game sold more copies than its regular rival FIFA 20 this week, with EA's footie sim actually dropping to third place. Sitting between them in second place is Grand Theft Auto V, the six-year-old game that somehow manages to find itself in the top ten almost every single week, even now.
There are a few more Nintendo-published games to be found in the top ten, including a nice jump for New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe which has risen from 22nd place to tenth.
Here's a look at this week's top ten all formats chart:
Last Week | This Week | Title |
---|---|---|
2 | 1 | Animal Crossing: New Horizons |
5 | 2 | Grand Theft Auto V |
1 | 3 | FIFA 20 |

Half of the top ten are switch only releases (I hesitate to say exclusive since MInecraft's Switch version having separate sales counts doesn't make it an exclusive). And one more is a multiplat that's on Switch... that's not bad at all for one of Nintendo's worst territories.
@link3710
Don't think UK can be considered one of the worst territories anymore. Nintendo has been killing it in the UK since the Switch's release.
On topic, usual applies:
MK8Deluxe is a beast.
The green fella still killing it.
Good to see Mario U Deluxe back in the top 10, underrated game.
@link3710 considering the Switch has basically been sold out (or at the very least very hard to get) in the UK since the end of December, I'm not sure why or how it would be worthy of a 'worst territory' badge.
Ring Fit Adventure is like rocking horse poo here as well, Nintendo hardware has essentially been supply limited for the best part of 6 months now.
@TheFullAndy @ukaskew Alright, historically one of the worst then. And I mean, what major territories that we have info on is the Switch doing better than the UK in anyway? NA, Australia / Ocenia, France, Germany and Japan are all still probably better in terms of per capita sales. Only one that I know for a fact is worse is Russia, and they're practically not even selling there, while they aren't even in Brazil anymore.
Brilliant to see how well Luigi is doing. Top ten after 6 months on release is extremely impressive.
Luigi is lucky number 7 baby. 4 months away from the game, I think I'm ready to play it again. It's lacking in some areas, but it's just so gorgeous and unique
Just another week in the UK with the usual: FIFA, GTA, Fallen Order, Luigi's Mansion 3... And of course, Animal Crossing New Horizons remains unstoppable. Such is the Power of Nintendo.
I've seen a lot more advertising for Luigi's mansion so that's obviously paying off. Who knew?
I still think the UK is weak for Nintendo, stock shortages just mean demand is outstripping supply. But who knows what the supply is like.
Either way, traditionally it's been a poor territory so it's great to see so many Nintendo titles in the top ten.
Xbox Game Pass must be doing well in the UK for that kind of increase for GTAV. People check out GTAV via Game Pass and then decide to buy the game after it left Game Pass a few days ago.
@Grumblevolcano
Good point, that is probably exactly what has happened.
Personally I bought GTAV on sale for PS4 and just cannot get into it. The writing is cringeworthy and the control of the characters is so sluggish it just not fun to play.
Give me a remaster of Vice City on Switch and I will be happy.
Nice to see a handful of Switch titles here. Super happy that LM3 is still sticking around after this long.
who are these people that love FIFA, I can't stand that garbage.
UK charts really do confuse me. The fact that NSMBU is selling better than Mario Maker 2 also utterly baffles me - but does make me think its the reason that that last update we got was the last update.
I blame the marketing, I think people don't realize that MM2 gives you a full meat Nintendo made Mario campaign on top of countless fan levels and the ability to create your own. I really don't understand why people apparently prefer to skip all that for "just" a Mario game.
And as popular as GTA 5 remains, we still don't have a GTA or really any major Rockstar titles on Switch. Because of reasons I refuse to accept.
What reasons are you talking about @Heavyarms55?
@Otoemetry "3rd party games don't sell on Nintendo consoles!" and "Nintendo gamers don't want to play our games" and nonsense like that.
3rd party games obviously aren't going to sell as well when they come out on Nintendo months or years later. That's a given. And often times they are like EA's junk where they release a game under the same name, but with full sections of the game missing on the Nintendo version.
I don't expect Devs to deliver the same kind of top tier graphics on weaker hardware obviously. But you can't release a game 6 months later, missing game modes and then turn around and blame the consumers for not buying that version. But that's what they do, all the time. Release a game months or years later, having removed major features and then use that game's poor showing on Nintendo as "justification" for not releasing more games on the platform.
Switch isn't a new machine anymore, it's been out for years. If devs built a Switch version alongside other versions of a game and released them at the same time - then and only then - can the sales numbers be used as a legit argument. But I can't think of a time when that has happened.
It's no wonder Rockstar is in no rush to put out GTA 6, here we are, 7 years later and GTA V, is still selling at a rate that keeps it in the top 10 every month. Couple the consistent software sales with the bank they continue to make with GTA Online and anyone can see what a money maker it clearly continues to be.
Which does beg the question all the more: why the hell haven't they put GTA V on the Switch yet? One would think it'd be a no-brainer at this point that could only line Rockstar's pockets all the more with cash. I have to imagine they've tried at this point, but something is making it not function as desired. Considering it has PS3 and 360 builds, you'd think it's possible, but who knows.
@Heavyarms55 excellent response, thank you. Totally agree with everything you've said.
@duffmmann personally I think it's the same as the Mariokart 9 argument, when the previous game still sells incredibly well and regularly appears in the top 10 why bother with the risk of wasting huge sums of money on something which might be less successful.
@golephish Go do some searching, it won't be hard to find them.
perhaps I was being too harsh - just not my cup of tea. I see it everywhere.
@Otoemetry I agree. There is no real need for a Mario Kart 9 with 8 Deluxe continuing to do as well as it is, plus how would it justify its existence on the Switch, when realistically it would look very similar, and the only differences would be tracks, karts, and racers (unless they implement a gimmick not in 8 (Double Dash styled racing could work)), frankly I think it makes more sense for Nintendo to just release more DLC or a full expansion to 8 Deluxe instead.
