@-wc- I think it's just because Rugrats stayed relevant longer than any of those series. It gives the illusion that the series is newer than it really is. Memories are a funny thing
@-wc- Darkwing Duck, Ren & Stimpy, Bucky O'Hare, Toxic Crusaders. All premiered in 1991 like Rugrats and got NES games. NES got tons of cartoon-licensed content up until 1994, this wouldn't have been out of place.
Digital releases rely on an IARC survey which automatically generates a rating. Usually it's fairly accurate and if it needs to be revised, it's pretty minor. For example, an E10+ gets revised to a T on further review. The content of this game must have tricked the survey a little more than usual, or it wasn't filled out properly.
A lot of the controversy was because of people feeling "ripped off" that LRG's release wasn't going to be the only physical version of the game, even though that's something LRG has no control over. I'm guessing they were scared that the game's resale value would be lower. Boohoo to them.
@DrDaisy It's definitely not Battletoads-level hard. It's not a OHKO stage. You have a health bar and there are powerups throughout. It's more of a "this will take you two or three times" challenge than anything.
@Emceehamster Pretty sure Nintendo dropped their family friendly requirements as soon as the ESRB became a thing around the time Mortal Kombat 2 came out. We've been in the end-times for about 25 years now.
@HappyMaskedGuy I am an indie game dev who has worked with licensed properties, and I can personally say that using someone else's assets is a serious NO. It's something that any serious dev goes out of their way to avoid. A texture like that, invisible to the player, would take only minutes to put together. Some rough scribbles would've sufficed. This isn't a case of someone just slipping in a reference. If they used copyrighted manga scans, that's a breach of contract. They knew what they were doing and got caught, end of story.
@HobbitGamer It's because they're rereleases of old games. If Nintendo released a brand new NES game, like a full new 8-bit Mario or Zelda, people would go nuts.
@NotTelevision Video games are still a fairly young medium when compared to music or film. If you look at those media, there is stuff much older than Super Mario Bros which still falls under copyright. Songs by bands like the Beatles, classic films from the 40s and 50s. All of this is still owned by copyright holders. Things get a bit messy depending on the country and medium, but copyright usually applies until 50-70 years after the death of the author, or 90-120 years after the original publication. That's why so many classic pre-20th century novels are public domain, like Dracula and Frankenstein. Put into that context, a 33-year old game created by someone still alive and active in the game industry has no chance at becoming public domain for a very long time.
@Equinox Check out the Chinese social credit system. That's way more 1984 than enforcing copyright laws. Personally, if a Chinese company started copying my work, I'd be incredibly upset about it. It's not a "copying is respect" thing. It's actually a major problem in pretty much any industry China can get its hands on. The country is notorious for IP theft, and their government is fully complicit, considering basically all Chinese business is government controlled.
@Equinox It's not up to the rest of the world to try to tolerate and understand Chinese IP theft. It needs to be stopped, because it hurts everyone. End of story. Big dev or small, shut them down until they learn to develop something honestly.
My kid used to play Fortnite on his PS4 until it launched on Switch. Then, he made a new Unreal account to play Fortnite on his Switch. When his non-Switch owning friends want to play, he now uses his Switch account on his PC instead of the PS4 account, which he might have actually used had the option been available. I'm sure he's not the only person to do so. Not sure how this behavior benefits Sony, but hey, keep up the good fight I guess?
I got the Hori stick a couple weeks after launch "used" for $100. Wasn't even taken out of the plastic. I'm guessing it was a "buyer's remorse" return.
I really don't think people should knock this controller as useless until they've actually used one. It's one of the most comfortable controllers for 2d gaming that I've ever used. It may even beat out the SNES controller. It has so much more utility than just Pokken.
I feel like a lot of people have the wrong idea here. If you already own the Wii U version, this doesn't affect your digital copy. You can redownload it even if you deleted it. All it means is no new sales, which probably wouldn't happen anyway. I doubt many Wii U owners were waiting to buy it for the past few years and just haven't gotten around to it. A lot of us even got it for free when Club Nintendo shut down. Feels like a non-issue to me.
I have the SupaBoy S. It's trash. Not just the aspect ratio either. It's cheap, bulky, washed out, and ugly. A huge disappointment. I wouldn't buy this one even with the fixed ratio.
@aesc My guess is that they modified the controller design because Nintendo has trademarked the design of the SNES pad with the release of the SNES mini, hence the "3rd party looking but close enough" feel. We probably won't be seeing the old design anymore outside of old stock. The 2.4GHz controllers are kind of confusing, but I guess they're just a budget option for the SNES mini.
I got it for my 11 year old and he won't stop talking about how it's better than PE due to the controls alone. He's seriously impressed and having a great time with it. It's not due to a lack of other versions of Minecraft in the house either. We have it on PC, Android, PS4, Wii U, and Switch too. PC will always be his favorite, but this is definitely going to be his go to version for on the go.
@OorWullie The weirdest thing about it is that it's almost exactly the same as the Wii U's D-Pad mechanically. The only real difference is that the rubber pads on the membrane above each switch are slightly thicker, and that slight extra thickness is enough to make the controller too sensitive. If you replace the membrane with one from a Wii U controller, it pretty much fixes everything. Granted, it should've been like this to begin with. Apparently newer controllers are better (Splatoon ones in particular), and I've also heard Nintendo will replace the pad if you sent it in.
It really is a shame. Part of this is due to the way Nintendo is handling indie Switch development. There is a tighter lid on it and it's harder to get devkits compared to the 3DS. I can understand why, because they don't want the market flooded, but it is a shame.
It'll likely look better than the NES Retron HD, mostly because SNES on a chip systems tend to look and sound more accurate than NES on a chip ones, and that's what this will be. Mostly because China doesn't care so long as it "works" and that's where the components are coming from.
Checked their website, and this is identical to their Android VR controller. The standard 3 Android buttons are along the bottom, which is why the -/+ are there too. Although, strangely, this controller also has select/start in standard locations, which probably double as -/+ anyway. I would've expected the screenshot button down there next to home myself.
Complaining about 8-bit games in comparison to modern games is like complaining about paintings when you can have sculptures. 2d and 3d are different forms of media. We have plenty of room for both.
NES Mini was a stop-gap console to fill in the need for a holiday-season product before the Switch came out. It was discontinued for two reasons:
1. The Switch came out and was wildly successful. Focus on new product with an expanding library is better than a standalone novelty item.
2. It was way too easy to hack. Nintendo hates emulation boxes. There was no way to patch the NES Mini after it had been hacked. I believe this was the death knell for the system.
As for the whole SNES vs NES debate, I'm going to say that the better system is the one you spent more time playing when you were 10 years old.
@Underoath_048 Thanks for the feedback! Actually, I appreciate all feedback, positive or not. I realize that developing for the NES is a narrow target audience and won't appeal to everyone. It's definitely a niche market, but as a one-man project there are advantages to this as well, as you mentioned above.
Making a game for a console you grew up playing is a huge part of it. It's like when bands put out records on vinyl. It might not make sense in modern technological terms, but there is a small, dedicated market of enthusiasts that always have an interest.
This sounds simple enough, as it's just one request and only goes one way like a phone number. You can just make a Facebook post with your friend code and get people to add you then accept any requests you want. It's better than both parties requiring it like on the 3DS, and WAY better than every game having a unique friend code that had to be verified both ways on the old DS.
@Maxz Forget family pets, I have Pokemon older than my ten year old son, who I regularly play Pokemon with. They've been transferred all the way up from Leaf Green with each new generation.
@Anti-Matter They work as actual X/Y buttons when using the controller on other systems. I'm pretty sure in this case they work as X=B, Y=A, sort of like when using a Wii classic controller.
Control scheme looks bad. The idea of 4 face buttons is a nice thought for some games, but it's poorly implemented because some games require shoulder buttons. No link cable support makes it a poor Pokemon machine. The good news about this is it's just the beginning. Clone systems like this come out in waves. I'm guessing Hyperkin or someone else will have a different GBA clone out within 6 months of this, hopefully clearing up the issues with this one.
