If you're looking for a new game for your NES in 2019, or perhaps just looking for a cool, new 8-bit adventure game, Orange Island could well be worth investigating.
Being developed by former Sega designer, Ted Sterchi, the game will have players exploring an island while swapping between five different playable characters who have their own unique magical abilities. The island contains plenty of secrets and hidden ancient relics just itching to be found.
It's currently generating funds on Kickstarter, where it has already managed to smash its original goal. This means that a digital PC release is already in the bag, but stretch goals could see a release on NES (yes, a physical cartridge for the decades-old system) and also Switch. It only needs another £2,000-or-so to reach the NES stretch goal at the time of writing, so we'd say that one's definitely likely. It has already passed the goal which secures some songs by Secret of Mana composer Hiroki Kikuta.
If you want to learn more and potentially pledge your support to the project, you can check out the game's full Kickstarter page right here.
Do you like the look of this one? Do you hope it manages to get a release on Nintendo's systems? Tell us below.

It looks really cool, i backed it already.
I wish them nothing but the best but i prefer to play on a console and not a PC and i don't have a NES anymore. So if it doesn't hit its Switch goal it'll be a pass for me.
@BacklogBlues
It's getting close to a Switch port stretch goal and it has 16 days to go. I'd say a Switch port is more likely to happen than not.
When Nintendo releases NES games, it’s terrible. When someone else makes 8 bit games, it’s great. People are strange.
Great news for the 1,000 of you that still have the NES
@HobbitGamer Gamers are fickle.
I'm hoping it reaches its goals but I think an NES goal is kind of unnecessary/worthless since most of the general public doesn't have an NES anymore except for the few game collectors left. Still hoping for the best for them.
Also, that ending music at the end of that trailer made me tear up a bit. So beautiful.
@HobbitGamer Don't be silly.
The NES stretch goal has now been funded.
@HobbitGamer Nintendo is releasing NES games we've paid for several times over on Wii, Wii U and 3DS, though. At least this one is new.
@Damo I know it's new, but you know i'm not 100% wrong Damien
If we'll be nitpicky, I've also never paid for Star Tropics, Wario's Woods, Excite Bike, some others. Orange Island does look neat, I'm just pointing out that some people are strange.
Just backed it since it looks interesting. We’ll see how it turns out, don’t see how switch goal won’t be made but don’t wanna jinx it!
@Dman10 theres a lot more than that or else the homebrew community wouldn't be in good shape
@Dakotastomp not true at all
@HobbitGamer the point is people want new experiences. a NES game developed in 2019 is a new game. it’s probably smart to release NES cartridges for the same reason bands still make vinyl records – – the small number of people who are into these things, are willing to pay for them. it’s a small, hardcore fanbase.
Looks cool and if it arrives on Switch, I'll probably download it. But I'm not going to back it. I backed a game called Indivisible several years ago at this point from BackerKit and it still hasn't released. Haven't received any updates on when it'll be released despite seeing gameplay video and character design that looks pretty much finished. None of their emails make it clear when the ETA for the game is. So I'm not going to ever back these kinds of games ever again. I feel like Indivisible developers took my money and ran with it.
I think i'm done with backing stuff on kickstarter for now unless something really interesting comes a long. The games always take forever to make and it definitely can be such a crap shoot. The game I spent the most kickstarting I really don't know if it's ever going to get finished, and I have at least one other game Reven for those that remember hearing about that one on here that basically made another crappy steam game first, and said they were still making the main game, but appears they are done updating and likely never coming out. So yeah definitely where i'm at with Kickstarter games, also my bloodstained is the switch version which I haven't even played yet because i'm waiting for them to patch the game into a better state of play.
@Dman10 You're off by several zeroes.
Not relevant but reminded me of my younger self dreaming of a Pokémon Orange version based on the orange islands from the anime!!
@YANDMAN how much do people back I mean like can you donate a pound
Who are these gamers who think very few people still own an NES? I’d guess it’s a ton given how many of these are successfully funded on Kickstarter or go straight to Amazon.
Those speaking animations are nightmare fuel, jeez
@HobbitGamer It's because they're rereleases of old games. If Nintendo released a brand new NES game, like a full new 8-bit Mario or Zelda, people would go nuts.
@Hitman1102 Tell me one kid today who still has an NES. Just one. Even if they do, what are the chances they'll want to drop coin on a cartridge in today's wireless market?
I want this for Switch. Looks great! Would be even better if it was at least 2 player though. I'll back it in a bit.
I'm going to back it solely due to the fact it's an NES cart
@Yorumi
Ha! It’s so true. As you say, you can get a retro system and games, if you don’t care much for condition, for much less than a new system or game. It’s one of the cheapest ways to game and it’s not like something like the NES breaks down either. I still go further and collect Atari 2600 games (mostly dirt cheap, even cheaper than NES) as well. I’m glad all this retro stuff exists.
@Yorumi True. I just think it's a bit much. Why not stop at the Switch version?
@Yorumi For sure. I’m a huge collector and I get stuff all the time. My latest pick was a game genie with the code book for $20 on eBay. Last week I bought Nigel Mansel Racing for SNES for $12, including shipping, So it’s definitely cheap.
And I also joined this campaign for the NES cart.
@Yorumi @Agent721 That's fine. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, but for someone who has a Switch or a system they will port Orange island to, an NES goal just feels like a glorified trophy. Maybe I'm wrong and when it does hopefully get released, the Cartridge version will be superior to the Switch version, but I just find it odd to make stretch goals of new indie titles for much older consoles.
@Dakotastomp it's true it isn't geared towards kids. The homebrew market is targeted towards adults who grew up on the system the games are being home-brewed for. I don't know if you live in Europe or not where the NES wasn't as big but here in the US the retro gaming community is pretty big. Large enough that retro game stores are popping up everywhere. Close friend of mine owns two stores and NES systems and games are constantly being bought.
They'll undoubtedly make much more money on this digitally as the physical NES cart is only for a niche group but its a group that exists and have/will buy it. If people are funding it on Kickstarter for that reason than why is it a problem?
@Dakotastomp
It comes down to nostalgia. I’d much rather play an NES game on its original console than on Switch. Personal preference I guess, but as a 42 year old man who grew up in the 80s and idolizes the NES, it shouldn’t be too hard to understand.
@Hitman1102
Great answer.
@Hitman1102
Ok, I do live in the US, but I don't live close to anyone whose in the retro gaming community. Like you said, it's a niche market, so finding /knowing anyone else in the retro collecting community is pretty hard. I'm sure it's big where you're at, just not where I'm at so I don't know.
It's not a problem, it's just odd, and that's understandable for someone who has grown up with only seeing new games on new systems while having to settle for older games on older systems. I still have an N64 and when they're around, I like to buy and collect old cartridges for it, so I get the joy and satisfaction of owning a retro consoles, but I think new games coming to old consoles is just... odd is all. It's rare, yet odd. That's all I'm trying to say.
@Agent721 Understandable, but as a kid of '96, I was use to seeing new systems with newer games but being poor I only had a Genesis at the time, knew the games were old, and never expected anything new. When I finally bought a Switch, I figured I'd be done with searching for classics or thinking anyone would make new games for older consoles. It's just how I saw it.
@Dakotastomp that's fair.
@ryobi85 If you want to yes, but you'll obviously get no reward for that. I backed it for 45 and that gets you a complete in box NES game.
Nice that it has the same style looks and texts as some of the older HAL Lab games such as Kirby's Adventure and EarthBound Beginnings. I'm not backing the game but might buy it if it ever becomes available on either platform.
I love this style, it is fresh while super retro. It has to be good to have Hiroki Kikuta involved in the music. Really looking like it'll make it to switch too.
The Kickstarter campaign ends very soon, only about 90 minutes to go.
I decided to back it, it looks pretty nice. It's very close to the £70k mark with the final planned stretch goal, I'm hoping it can manage the last bit of money it needs.
Looks and sounds pretty good.
