Re: Ubisoft's Child of Light Set to Shine on the Wii U

bizcuthammer

This isnt an indie title. People seem confused about what makes a game an indie title. Just cause a game is artsy or has a retro feel or is a download-only game do NOT make them indie. Indie games are named as such because they are developed by independent developers. This game is being made by Ubisoft, a major company, not a small group of hopeful devs on a tight budget making something because they truly want to share it with the world. This is an artsy, retro-inspired, eshop title, yes, but it isnt an indie game.

Re: Leaked Ubisoft Games Confirmed, but Skipping Nintendo Platforms

bizcuthammer

Half the people who buy Nintendo consoles only buy Nintendo games or exclusives. So do WiiU owners even really care? I've had to own 2 dedicated consoles each gen since the N64 era due to piss poor 3rd party support on Ninty consoles. I had N64 & PSX, GCN & PS2, and Wii & 360. This gen, i'll have WiiU & PS4. It sucks cause its stupid expensive, but i love nintendo games too much not to buy their consoles. This is why i personally dont care if nintendo goes third party, cause it'd save me lots of money next gen, and then maybe Ninty would go back to trying to innovate with their software instead of trying to do it with their hardware. I know they arent going third party (at least not anytime remotely soon), but if they ever do, i wouldnt be upset.

Re: Early Estimates Place Pikmin 3 August Sales in the U.S. at 185,000 Units

bizcuthammer

Given the incredibly small user base on WiiU in the US, 185,000 really isnt that bad in a little under a month. About 2 million people in the US own a WiiU i would guess. Way less than any other console right now, and worldwide sales still havent matched nintendo's initial target of 5.5 million by March 2013. I dont see WiiU outselling its competitors this holiday either. Nintendo has done a nice job announcing games like Mario 3D World and Donkey Kong Country for this holiday, but we're kidding ourselves if we think those are killer apps worth buying a system for, especially a system that lacks most of the heavy hitting third party games like Madden NFL 25, Grand Theft Auto V, and Dragon Age III. If there is a killer app coming, its in the form of Smash Bros, which doesnt hit until 2014. If Nintendo were to release an innovative, true 3D Mario or a brand new Zelda game, or even something in the vein of Wii Sports/Fit that captures a wider gaming audience and hasnt really been done before... Then maybe WiiU would sell this holiday, but as it is, i still see it coming in a rather distant 3rd, if not also possibly getting outsold by old consoles like 360/PS3, and its own sibling, the 3DS.

Re: Nintendo Direct: Pokémon Direct Scheduled For Wednesday September 4th

bizcuthammer

@icerazor A console pokemon game in the main series goes against the core of what pokemon is: A portable, monster collecting/trading/battling game. Its name is short for Pocket Monsters for crying out loud. WiiU doesnt fit in your pocket, and isnt an on-the-go system, meaning it is unsuitable for the Pokemon concept of trading/battling on the go. Pokemon will never be on a home console, and graphics have nothing to do with their decision, so throw that argument out. Pokemon is designed at its core for handhelds, and it wouldnt be itself on a console.

Re: Rayman Legends Sells More Copies In The UK On Wii U Than Any Other Format

bizcuthammer

I think this goes to show that Xbox/PS gamers just dont care about innovative, fun games if they arent modeled with realistic graphics and rated mature. None of my 360-owning friends are even remotely interested in it, while almost all my WiiU owning friends are. Not only that, but most of my xbox friends only play sports games, Halo/CoD/Battlefield, and Minecraft. Any other game i try to get them to play they refuse because its 'not cool' or 'not their type of game.' I dont get that, as i play both games like Rayman, Mario, etc. as well as stuff like Halo and Madden. If its a good/fun game, i'll play it. But they dont want to even touch Pikmin 3 or Nintendo Land. I just think its really lame, as they're missing out on some great games and fun.

Re: Feature: The Biggest Wii U Games of 2013 - Autumn / Fall Edition

bizcuthammer

I'll be picking up Mario 3D World, Sonic Lost World, DKC:TF, and Wind Waker HD for sure. Oh and Shovel Knight as well. I'd love to pick up Watch Dogs, but i dont have enough $ for all of them, so i'll likely pick it up early 2014 so long as it gets good reviews and recommendations from people who've played it (and so long as the WiiU version comes with everything the others do).

Re: Peter Molyneux Reveals His Favourite Zelda Title Of All Time

bizcuthammer

I personally like every other 3D Zelda more than TP. Also LttP is better, too. But after those, TP is better than all the other 2D Zeldas. But thats my opinion, as i heavily prefer 3D Zelda to 2D Zelda. The fact that i rank LttP over TP is both telling of how awesome LttP is, and how 'just ok' i thought TP was. The first 2 hours of TP are the slowest, most boring couple hours in any game and they keep me from ever wanting to replay the game. Also bad are the incredibly annoying and repetetive early Wolf sections, as well as the 20 min it takes to travel almost anywhere even when riding Epona. Also, TP by far and away has the worst art style of all the 3D games. After WW, TP just seemed so bland and boring, and at times lifeless.

There was also some good in TP though. The dungeon design was mostly amazing, and the story was one of the better ones in the series. Midna is probably my favorite companion character, as she's much less annoying than most of the others and is actually critical to story and gameplay. A lot of the boss battles were pretty cool, though the last one was rather anti-climactic.

Despite its strengths, TP is the only 3D Zelda game i cant bring myself to play again. I beat it once, and that was enough. I've played OoT through 4 or 5 times, Majora the same, WW probably 6 or 7 (with another playthrough coming in a month) and SS i've beat twice now. TP just didnt do it for me.

Re: Review: The Legend of Zelda (Wii U eShop / NES)

bizcuthammer

My issue with the first two Zelda games (I played both of them as a kid on my NES btw) is that once you've played future entries in the series, these two become incredibly outdated. Especially if you've played LttP or MC or even the Oracle games. The only enjoyment i get out of the original game now is based purely on nostalgia, not on gameplay. Though i do love hearing the 8-bit soundtrack.

Re: Nintendo Download: 25th July (North America)

bizcuthammer

Man i really wanna see more than just NES and SNES games on WiiU. I know Ninty confirmed GBA and N64 support, but where are they?! And what about GCN, Genesis, TurboGrafx-16, and (please) Saturn and Dreamcast? And why just one release per week?! At this rate, it'll take 10 years for every worthwhile retro game to appear on the VC. They could at least do 2 or 3 like they used to on Wii when it launched.

Re: New Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Game Coming To Wii And 3DS

bizcuthammer

If its coming to Wii, you can play it on WiiU, so it doesnt matter much. I just hope its a good game, cause i loved TMNT 3 on NES, TMNT IV on SNES and the rebooted series beat em ups on GCN. Multiplayer beat em ups will always have a place in my heart, and a new one to play with my son would be awesome!

Re: Round Table: Let's Talk About the Famicom / NES

bizcuthammer

My parents had an NES before i was born in early 1989. We didnt get an SNES til 1993, so the NES my parents owned and the Sega Genesis my grandma had were my first gaming memories. Since we're talking NES, i have a few specific memories from my very early childhood.

Punch-Out!! - I remember this being my dad's favorite game. I just recently got to play it with him again on WiiU. It was like a blast from 20 years ago. I couldnt wait til he got home from work every day so we could try and get to Tyson.

Super Mario Bros 3 - The first game i remember begging my parents to buy after renting it several times. Also the first game i remember playing with my younger brother. The super leaf and frog suit are still 2 of my favorite ever Mario power ups.

Bubble Bobble - The only game i ever played in which my mom was better at it than me (at least when i was age 3 or so anyway).

Battletoads and TMNT 3 - I played these games with my cousin at his place for hours on end. Co-op beat em ups were simply awesome for us. We never did beat Battletoads...

Zelda II - I didnt play the original til years later, but the gold cartridge was awesome to me as a kid. I sucked at this game, but i loved exploring the world of Zelda, something I still love to this day.

There are so many other games I remember playing on NES. Duck Hunt, Super Mario Bros 1-2, Kid Icarus, Mega Man 5, Kirby's Adventure, Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr, Double Dragon II, Double Dribble, Metroid... It was a great system, and started a love for Nintendo games that will always be with me.

Re: Review: EarthBound (Wii U eShop)

bizcuthammer

I really hope this sells well. That way when the petitioning starts for Ninty to bring the VC version of Mother 3 over, they may be willing to translate it and finally give us that game legally. I dont care if that jacks up Mother 3's eshop price to $25, the west deserves to play that game in a way that is legal and official.

Re: Shigeru Miyamoto Optimistic About The Future of Wii U

bizcuthammer

I am a HUGE Pikmin fan, but no i dont think it will help boost WiiU sales much. Pikmin is a very niche series, and while its one of my personal favorites, i know most people would never buy a $350 console to play it. Mario, Zelda and Smash Bros are system sellers. I dont expect WiiU to see a big boost in system sales til next year, when Mario Kart 8, Mario 3D World, Smash Bros and possibly a new Zelda game will be releasing. 2014 will be WiiU's big year, but one has to wonder if it will come too late.

Re: Soapbox: Retail Games Cost Too Much To Download From The eShop

bizcuthammer

I will only download first party games from certain series, like Mario, Zelda or Pokemon. Never third party games, cause in most cases i will end up selling those either to afford other games, or at tge end of a gen to afford the next gen console. I also will never download a game in a series like Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Mario Party or Wii Fit, because i trade those in when the next entry comes out, since the old one now becomes outdated and likely wont be played again. And even then, i dont care for downloading retail games because of nintendo's pricing of them and the lack of account recovery if something goes wrong. The only game i've downloaded is Fire Emblem on 3DS, and thats ONLY because stores had shortages and i got tired of waiting for the physical copy. If ninty put retail downloads online at just $10 cheaper than the physical copy, i'd buy a lot more.

Oh one other reason i hate nintendo's approach to this? The fact that their consoles come with pathetic amounts of onboard storage. WiiU Deluxe came with 32GB. Thats awful. PS4 comes with 500GB. Like ninty really couldnt have at least put 100GB on there?! And the excuse that getting extra memory storage is easy and cheap is stupid. If thats the case, why didnt they find a way to easily and cost effectively put 200-500GB on WiiU?! I dont want to pay extra money just to download retail games that i can just as easily buy a physical copt of at no extra expense. Buying just one DL retail game on 3DS ate over half my storage on my 3DS. Thats ridiculous compared to the competition (PSVita aside). My 360 and PS3 came with more memory than i knew what to do with, and both are priced cheaper than WiiU. PS4 is only $50 more, but has 500GB and much better tech under the hood. If ninty is gonna keep WiiU at its current price point, it needs to start offering more memory and probably an extra free game or two. The current value of WiiU does not match its MSRP.

Re: Miyamoto: Mario Will Likely Return To Single-Player

bizcuthammer

If there is no Mario game in the vein of Mario 64/Galaxy/Sunshine on WiiU, then in my view the console will be a failure when held up against all past Nintendo consoles. That kind of Mario game is one of the reasons (alongside smash bros and zelda) that i bought my WiiU. Mario 64 and the galaxy games are three of my top 10 favorite games. It'd be extremely disappointing if a follow up to them didnt appear on WiiU.

Re: Pachter: Nintendo Has Lost Its "Mojo"

bizcuthammer

We can get mad all we want, but the fact is: Pachter is right. There is literally ZERO reason to get a WiiU over a PS4 outside the fact that WiiU has ninty games. By this time next year, i doubt we'll be seeing much better third party support, and nintendo's sales will be driven solely by Smash Bros and Mario Kart. I dont think the software lineup coming out in 2013 is compelling enough for a WiiU, as most my friends on the fence about getting one have said they dont really care about DKCTF, W101, or WWHD. They dont even want SM3DW cause they say its just a 3D version of the NSMB games, wwhich they dont care for enough to buy a console. When i asked them what games they would get one for it was pretty unanimous: Smash Bros, and a couple have said a brand new Zelda game. ALL of them want a PS4 or Xbox One though, because they know it will be supported by first and third party titles.

Nintendo is in trouble, and i dont see them getting out of it soon. They made a big mistake with WiiU in thinking it was innovative enough to compete against PS4 and Xbone. Its not. I own one, and i know its not because most WiiU games barely use the gamepad for anything cool outside off tv play, which is doable on handhelds like 3DS, which have way better games than WiiU, and tablets/phones. It is only marginally more powerful than PS3, and pales in comparison to PS4 and Xbone. It has no third party support because of that, and little public interest as well. It is only $50 cheaper than a far superior console this holiday, and comes with only 32GB of storage, while PS4 comes with 500GB. It literally has no reason to be bought outside of Nintendo games.

Nintendo needs to quit trying to innovate with its hardware and start innovating with its software again like it did back in the day. You know, when they were actually winning the console wars.

Re: Eiji Aonuma - The Wind Waker HD is a "Test Case" for New Zelda Wii U Title

bizcuthammer

I definitely dont want episodic zelda games. I'd rather wait 3-4 years for a full game than get it in chunks. I like to be able to play the full experience and it just feels more epic that way. I dont think zelda would work well in episodes like maybe a game like fire emblem or mario. Zelda games are made up of one big quest. It shouldnt be split into episodes.

Re: Poll: How Important is Dual / Second Screen Gaming?

bizcuthammer

Asynchronized gameplay and off tv play are really cool ideas, but in the case of the former it is rarely used, and if Nintendo's biggest selling point is Off Screen play, WiiU wont sell because people would rather play a handheld console if they arent using their tv screens. In Japan where theres usually only one tv in the house, it may make sense, but most american/british homes have more than one tv, so fighting over who gets to use it isnt a big problem.

Nintendo needs to make better, more unique use of the gamepad in my opinion. I think it has loads of potential, but it isnt being used properly even by nintendo. None of the upcoming first party games are using it creatively, with Pikmin 3 using it as a map and the others almost all using it only for off tv gameplay. Thats kinda boring and lame. If the WiiU is so innovative, then where's the creativity?!

Re: Talking Point: The Wii U's Third-Party Concerns Are Brushed Off By 3DS

bizcuthammer

I'm tired of saying it but first of all: very few people who buy nintendo consoles care about 3rd party games in general, outside of a few "special" IPs like Sonic, Mega Man, and stuff that resemble Nintendo IPs. And thats fine I guess. It just means 3rd parties will always view Nintendo systems as financially risky when it comes to releasing games. But really, its not all consumers' faults that Nintendo is almost a joke in core gaming circles, its their own fault. They make hardware that they personally want to make great games with, but no other developers care about at all. Nintendo makes games differently than any other company in the world, and when they design their hardware, they refuse to take into account the preferences of third party developers. I'm not saying they have to abandon what makes them unique, but they need to make their systems' quirkiness optional instead of integral, like the PS3 does with Move: its there if gamers/devs want to use it, but its not the core selling point of the console. Also nintendo needs to quit making consoles that are so much weaker than its competition. That does nothing to help its image as a kiddie company, and makes third parties even less likely to care about the system. I mean, we can hope all we want that when WiiU sells more units, third parties will crawl back to it, but i doubt that happens on a significant level simply because WiiU is too quirky and weak compared to the other consoles. After all, Wii sold 100 million units... And third party devs didnt care about it anyway. Where were the good EA, Ubisoft, Bethesda and Square games on Wii? There werent any, because of the reasons i mentioned above.

If nintendo is going to save the WiiU, its going to have to do it all on its own for yet another generation. I only hope that this time they learn their lessons and make a system next gen that gamers really want rather than one they feel obligated to buy just so they can play the new Zelda or Smash Bros.

Re: Microsoft Execs Thought They Owned Donkey Kong After Acquiring Rare

bizcuthammer

Sometimes i wonder what could have been if nintendo hadn't been stupid enough to let rare go. The two companies needed each other, and both have hurt since microsoft bought rare. Though clearly rare hurts more, nintendo doesnt have that great developer coming up with new IPs with humor and great gameplay anymore. Retro has done well, but i'd take Banjo-Kazooie, Perfect Dark, and Conker over most of Retro's stuff (except maybe the first metroid prime). Rare not only did what Retro does by revitalizing old nintendo IPs like DK and Star Fox, it also came up with its own great games, and did so more than once every 3 years like Retro does. Retro makes great stuff, but it takes them forever. In a span of 11 years, Retro has put out 5 games. In the span of 1997-2002 (5 years) Rare put out Diddy Kong Racing, Killer Instinct Gold, Banjo-Kazooie, Jet Force Gemini, GoldenEye 007, Banjo-Tooie, Donkey Kong 64, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Perfect Dark, and Star Fox Adventures. Thats 10 games in half the time its taken Retro to make 5. And all 10 of those games were good and fun to play. Why nintendo ever let that amount of quality production go, i'll never be dumb enough to understand.

Re: First Impressions: Yoshi's New Island

bizcuthammer

I've never really cared for the Yoshi's Island games. The SNES one always looked cool, but i just got bored with it really quickly. Then Yoshi's Story on the N64 was too easy and short for my tastes. After that, i havent played another entry in the series, and from what i've seen so far of this one, i doubt i'll be picking it up. Hopefully Yarn Yoshi can offer something cool and unique enough to change my mind.

Re: Nintendo Download: 27th June (North America)

bizcuthammer

The Wii U VC games nintendo puts out are getting pathetic... What the junk?! No one wants Vegas Stakes, nintendo! Japan just got FF6 and Secret of Mana last week, and you're giving us this?! Where's N64 and GBA support for that matter?! At the very least you could put out Super Mario Bros or something. I'd like to at some point actually download EarthBound as well, as that was promised months ago. Get your head in the game, nintendo.

Re: EA Outlines Its Reasons for Lack of Wii U Support

bizcuthammer

So apparantly the 4 million Wii U owners out there aren't considered gamers by EA. Cool. I'd love to see Star Wars games on Wii U, and BioWare games, but other than that, EA's games are crap imo. I wish they didnt own BioWare and Star Wars, but it is what it is i guess.

Re: Review: Game & Wario (Wii U)

bizcuthammer

I've never played a warioware game i thought deserved better or worse than a 7/10, so i'm not surprised. This looks like a rent or borrow game for me. Definitely not a buy.

Re: Reggie Unmoved By The Threat Of $400 PlayStation 4

bizcuthammer

Nintendo games arent just for kids... They're for everyone. Thats why they're fantastic. Anyone can pick up and play mario or pokemon or zelda. They're simple enough for casual/young gamers, yet deep enough for core gamers. I can play nintendo land, mario and smash bros with my 2-year old son, my 4-year old neice, myself (25-year old male) my 51-year old dad, and my 70-year old grandma, and we can all have fun. You cant say the same about games like Call of Duty, Uncharted, God of War, Halo, Forza or Final Fantasy. Only nintendo does it. They're like the disney of video games.

Re: Kingdom Hearts III Highly Unlikely To Appear On Wii U

bizcuthammer

Kingdom Hearts needs to be on nintendo consoles. The audiences for wii u and KH are incredibly similar, not so with XBO. I love the KH games, as well as FF and DQ, and i'm disappointed that nintendo once again created a console that Square doesnt want to develop for due to lack of power. I hope they can find a way to downscale it at some point.

Re: Feature: The Big Nintendo E3 Survey

bizcuthammer

E3 was ok... Not great, not awful. Same goes for all of the announcements except for a few. Smash Bros, X, Kingdom Hearts 3, and Star Wars Battlefront announcements were great. Most everything else was either predictable, already announced or disappointing.

Re: Waiting For Wii U To Drop In Price? Not Going To Happen, Says Nintendo

bizcuthammer

Wii U is not in any way a good value. Mid-gen power, no third party games, and only 32GB of onboard memory for $350?! I can get a PS4 with 500GB, true next gen power with 8GB of RAM, and confirmed excellent third party and indie support for just $50 more. If i'm a regular consumer with no fanboy bias at all, i'm buying a PS4 this holiday, not a Wii U, because the value is not there. The gamepad is supposed to be a unique selling point, yet hardly any upcoming games even require it to be played! Pikmin 3, mario 3D world, donkey kong, sonic lost world, etc can all be played withoyt the gamepad, and barely make good use of its features when it is being used! Wii U was never worth $350, but now that we know $400 for PS4, its even more obvious. Wii U should drop its price by at least $50, maybe even $80 like the 3DS did, and it needs to do it by the holiday season.

Re: Talking Point: E3 Exposed the Strains of Nintendo's Development Workload

bizcuthammer

Its not just Mario Kart... Pretty much every great-looking Wii U game wont be out til 2014... Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros, X, Bayonetta 2... All of those games are more impressive than anything coming in 2013. Not to mention the next Zelda game coming probably late 2014-mid 2015. I'd rather have any of those than DK:TF or Wii Party U or Wind Waker HD. Aside from Mario 3D World, i see nothing coming out this holiday that would convince people to buy a Wii U. Smash Bros may do that next year. A new Zelda might, too. Or you know, a true follow up to mario galaxy instead of mario 3D land would convince some people. Maybe a new metroid too. Pikmin 3, DK:TF, W101 and Wind Waker HD are going to be fun games, but none of them are system sellers. I know so many people that have said they arent interested in Wii U til either Smash Bros or Zelda (new, not a remake) comes out. Looks like they'll probably be waiting at least another 10-15 months.
