Re: Soapbox: Super Mario 3D World's Playful Whimsy is Refreshing, But Faces a Vital Commercial Test

bizcuthammer

Unfortunately, the majority could care less about what's the most fun these days. Its all about whats cool, not fun. I'm not saying "cool" games are no fun, just saying that games that are ONLY fun, but have no "dark" or "cool" or "popular" factor to them are never going to get the respect they deserve. Most Nintendo games fall under this category unfortunately. I prefer fun to cool, and could care less what people think.

Re: Happy Birthday, Wii U - You're One Today

bizcuthammer

Wii U was great when i got it for xmas last year. Then every game got delayed til fall this year, which meant from January-July, i had no reason to turn the system on other than to watch netflix. Then, finally, with Pikmin 3, games started coming. But my enchantment i had with WiiU at launch is gone now. It absolutely cannot go through another drought, even a short one, which means Ninty needs to pump out the big games fast if WiiU is to gain any traction after PS4 and XBO launches. Little 3rd party support doesnt help, with key games like Destiny, Final Fantasy XV, and Titanfall not hitting WiiU. I know stuff like DKCTF and Mario Kart are coming, but WiiU needs more than whats been announced. The problem is that its all on Ninty, and i see no way they can put out a stream of great content on WiiU consistently without having to ignore 3DS.

Re: Poll: As the PS4 Arrives, What Do You Think of the 'New Gen' Environment for Wii U?

bizcuthammer

PS4 will win this gen, as it is true nextgen with 3rd party games, good 1st party content and is cheaper than XBO. I wouldnt be surprised if Wii U came in last, but i think XBO wont do as well as its hardcore fans wish. At $500, and basically being the same as PS4, but without much to talk about in terms of 1st party offerings, i think XBO may be last gen's PS3. Not many people want a $500 console, like how not many wanted the PS3 for that price back in 2006 when the economy was better than it is now. I think WiiU has a chance to beat XBO if Ninty can continuously pump out great games and maintain its popularity with kids and young families, as well as keeping WiiU at a cheaper price.

"We would like to increase our Virtual Console offerings and upgrade the service." - Iwata at Investor's Meeting late 2013

Nintendo continues its strategy of drip feeding bad VC games once per week, offering a good game once per month or so

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo's Resilience Against Wii U Criticism Emphasizes Its Longevity

bizcuthammer

The thing is, if Nintendo had initially supported Wii U AT LAUNCH with big first party titles, it wouldnt be struggling. Now Wii U has an image problem for being a failing system with nothing to play on it. If Super Mario 3D World, Pikmin 3 and Wii Fit U had been the launch games instead of Nintendo Land and NSMBU, Wii U would be fine now. But they got delayed, and in case of Mario, Ninty went with the conservative/easy route and are now paying for it.

Re: Parent Trap: Helping Newcomers Start Playing Pokémon, Zelda and Metroid

bizcuthammer

For Legend of Zelda and Metroid, its harder for families to really get into those, being epic single player experiences. I'd rarely ever suggest Metroid to a family, as its story is confusing unless you play them in order and its atmosphere and difficulty are a bit intimidating for some kids. Zelda, on the other hand, is less convoluted in its story since mostly every entry is a self-contained narrative within the larger legend. Zelda also usually offers kid friendly environments and graphics. I've found Zelda can be a fun experience for smaller families, helping one another to figure out what to do next in the game. But because its a single player game, in order to enjoy it as a family you probably could only count the console versions, as its very hard to cram everyone around a 3DS screen. I'd suggest starting with either Skyward Sword or Wind Waker HD in this case.

Re: Mamma Mia! The Mario & Luigi Wii U Bundle Is Sold Out At Target And GameStop

bizcuthammer

Great news. I hope it continues. Ninty has the best valued console for families this holiday. With stuff like Mario, Wii Party U and Nintendo Land, families can play for hours. Plus Wii Fit U should help get those weight loss New Year's resolutions started. Zelda, Mario 3D World, Batman AO and ACIV are in there too for some of the more experienced gamers in the family. Wii U may not have the greatest hardware, but at $300 and with a much better lineup of games than its new competition, it should be able to hold its own. For a family, especially one with kids 12 and under, there is no better console on the market than Wii U.

Re: Nintendo Will Be "Careful" About The Artistic Direction Of Zelda In The Future

bizcuthammer

I dont really care much about what the game's graphical style is... I just want a great story, great dungeon design, and interesting weapons/gadgets. My favorite graphical style to date has been Wind Waker, but I actually prefer Link and Zelda as young adults like in Skyward Sword. Wind Waker looks better than any other game though, but its dungeons are a bit lacking imo.

Re: Feature: Where Is Your Wii Balance Board?

bizcuthammer

Mine is sitting underneath my TV stand. We still use it about once a week. We used to use it a lot more, but once we began eating healthier and got more active with work/life, we didnt really have time or need for it anymore. I'd like to try the Wii Fit U trial though, as i did like Wii Fit Plus.

Re: Nintendo Financial Reports Bring Minor Profit, 3DS Success and More Wii U Struggles

bizcuthammer

I hate to say it, but Wii U is in a hole and i dont see it climbing out any time soon. Xmas will give a slight boost, but i dont know anyone (even younger kids and families) that want a Wii U over a PS4 or Xbone. The perception about Wii U is all over the place, and is mostly negative. Perception is key... No one on the fence is gonna buy a console they keep hearing has no good games, and isnt selling. Not even Mario will save it this time. Nintendo's approach to the Wii U in every way has been bad, and they are to blame for its failures. It isnt a bad system, though it is flawed, it just has no chance due to several errors on nintendo's part. They failed to market it properly, gave it a name that suggests it is nothing more than an HD Wii, gave it a pricetag that wasnt good value in $350, didnt support it with must-have software at launch (or even now), and made yet another console that is mostly inferior to its competition in terms of specs, media outlets and 3rd party support.

Basically, Nintendo made a box for Ninty games that is underpowered, and they expected everyone who bought a Wii to just buy it without question, so they didnt market it. They are paying for those mistakes, and unfortunately so is Wii U. They'll be lucky if Wii U reaches Gamecube sales. I see a very short lifespan in its future, with Ninty jumping ship and announcing its successor in 2016. Hopefully for the next system, they'll have learned their lessons.

Re: Shigeru Miyamoto Doesn't Rule Out Additional HD Remakes and a Return to the Mario Galaxy Style

bizcuthammer

If we're talking about HD remakes, there's really not a lot on GCN i'd want to pay for a remake of... I still have my GCN with all the games, and WW is probably the only one i felt needed to be made in HD. There are some 64 games i think could use extreme graphical overhauls though, like Mario 64, Donkey Kong 64, and Majora's Mask, but those would probably be done on 3DS rather than WiiU.

What i would love to see is HD collections like what Sony does. Like an HD Mario collection that would have 64, Sunshine and Galaxy 1&2. Or a classics collection with tons of retro NES/SNES games like the ones Sega has released. So far ninty only has done this kind of thing a few times with Metroid Prime Trilogy, Kirby Dream Collection and Mario's 25th Anniversary Collection. I'd like to see more, but with more though put into it.

Also, an HD remake of Xenoblade please, so you can stick it to Gamestop and their $90 'vintage' copy.

Re: Feature: A Supersonic History of Sonic Cartoons

bizcuthammer

In the 90s, i was a huge fan of BOTH Mario and Sonic. I pitied kids who limited themselves by only playing one system. I was fortunate enough to have both SNES and Genesis. I watched both Sonic cartoons, and loved them. I've always thought Sonic was a cooler character than Mario, but that Mario's games are better (back then it was true, but today its even moreso). I have owned (and still own) all of Ninty and Sega's consoles except for the Virtual Boy from Ninty and the Saturn from Sega. When Dreamcast failed, i really wanted Ninty to buy Sega, and i still do, so that all my favorite franchises from my childhood would be on one console.

Re: Review: Sonic Lost World (Wii U)

bizcuthammer

Nintendo Life writes the best analytical reviews. I read lots of review sites like IGN, Gamespot, etc. But half the time their reviews complain or gush about stuff they wished would have been in the game, rather than analyze what actually is there. They also have an annoying habit of writing articles complaining that certain series (Zelda, Mario, Sonic, Final Fantasy or whatever) never change, yet if a new game comes out that does challenge the status quo of that series, they whine about it in their reviews by saying 'it just doesnt feel like 'insert series here''.

NL does a great job analyzing games for what is actually there, and for the most part they judge games based on that entry alone, rather than comparing a title to past greatness of its predecessors. Great review here.

As for Lost World, I never expected more than an 8. People kept saying it was the answer to 'where is Mario Galaxy 3?' but i knew better. Sonic plays way different than Mario, and not in a good way for 3D platforming. I love Sonic, but Sega has never figured this out. Its no surprise that the highest rated Sonic games the last few years have been Generations and Colors, both of which include more 2D levels than 3D. If Sega would let Nintendo EAD make a 3D Sonic, they could show Sega how its done.

I still want to get this, as what was mentioned in the review made thus game sound just as good as the Dreamcast Sonic games, but not better, and i liked those even with their flaws. My son also loves Sonic, so it'll be fun to play with him. The review makes me glad i didnt preorder though, as now i'll probably wait til xmas to get it as a gift for my son.

Re: Here Are More Gorgeous Super Mario 3D World Screens to Enjoy

bizcuthammer

It looks fun, but it still isnt what it could have been as a follow up to Mario 64/Galaxy type games. It will be incredibly fun, and i'm excited to play it this holiday. But its the least excited i've been for a Mario game that i can ever remember. I was/am more excited for Pokemon XY, Wind Waker HD, Smash Bros U, X, Kingdom Hearts 3, Final Fantasy XV than i am for this... Which is really saying something since Mario is probably my favorite series ever. I just dont really care for the extremely linear approach to 3D Mario that 3D Land brought and 3D World seems to continue.

Re: Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director's Cut Will Cost $20 More On Wii U Than On PS3 And 360

bizcuthammer

Its $20 more on WiiU than 360/PS3 because they know the WiiU version sell way less than the other two because only about a third of WiiU owners buy 3rd party games. So they had two choices: either charge more to make up for it, or cancel the WiiU version. Most 3rd parties wouldve done option 2, so for those of you interested in this game, pay the $50 and be glad WiiU has the little 3rd party content it does, because in all honesty, its only going to go downhill from here on that front.

Re: Nintendo Wants Wii U To Be "The Console That Every Developer Wants To Publish On"

bizcuthammer

If Nintendo wanted Wii U to be a console every dev wants to make games for, they sure have lost touch with what devs like in consoles. What devs like: powerful specs, good install base, install base who will actually buy their games, hardware that is easy to use. What 3rd party devs dont like: underpowered hardware, low install base, gimmicky input controllers they have to work around, install bases (like most Wii U owners) who wont actually buy their games.

Seems to me like Ninty just wants 3rd parties to conform to the way Ninty likes to make games instead of making Wii U a console that devs want to use. If Nintendo really wanted this, they'd have made something closer to the PS4 than what Wii U is. 90% of third parties couldnt care less about the gamepad features, and like with EA ans S-E, the Wii U's hardware is annoyingly difficult for their current dev engines to get running on. Wii U was made by Nintendo FOR Nintendo, because only they like to make games for it.

I'm not hating on Wii U, i own one and generally like its features, but i'm not just gonna sit here and blame 3rd parties for Wii U's lack of success. Its Ninty's fault that Wii U is a console that only Ninty fans want, and its their fault that stuff like Final Fantasy XV, Madden 25, Kingdom Hearts 3, Dragon Age 3, Star Wars Battlefront 3, Destiny, FIFA 14. Etc arent coming to Wii U.

Stop lying to me about 3rd parties, Ninty. Either make a console they want to make games for, or admit you dont care because you just want to do things your way. You cant have both anymore.

Re: US Retailer Lists Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon For Wii U

bizcuthammer

If its a port then i hope its false. If its a new game in the series, then i hope its true. But i dont wanna buy the same game i just beat a few months ago next year. Its one thing to bring Wind Waker to WiiU, cause its a classic game over 10 years old. But a game that just released back in the spring on a current console? No thanks.

Re: Eiji Aonuma States Desire to Avoid the Limitations of Tradition in The Legend of Zelda Franchise

bizcuthammer

I dont care if they make changes or not, really... I love the formula they have, and its not broken. At the same time, i'm not opposed to them trying new things, i just want to be sure that whatever they do, it actually improves the experience rather than just being something new for the sake of bucking tradition. I may be a minority, but i actually dont like the renting item strategy in LBW, as it seems like its going to be an annoyance having to go back and forth to Ravio just to trade stuff in all the time. I'd rather it just all be available from the start, like it was in Majora's Mask. I hope i'm wrong about LBW, but it just doesnt look like the 'new' approach is better than the old one in this case.

Re: Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze Delayed Until Early 2014

bizcuthammer

They dont need more time to finish it lol. Ninty knows they have NOTHING lined up for Wii U for the 1st 3 months of 2014, and no 3rd party games either. They needed something there, and Mario Kart isnt gonna be done yet, so they delayed DKCTF. Its simple business, so dont try to explain it away in prettier words, Ninty.

Re: Hardware Review: Nintendo 2DS

bizcuthammer

2DS looks absolutely ridiculous, but it'll sell to its demographic. I have several friends who only wanted a 3DS to play Pokemon X & Y, who are very happy Nintendo is releasing a cheaper model for them to buy. I personally would never buy it, as i hate the design (3D isnt a big deal for me - i turn it off about 90% of the time). It certainly has its own market, though.

Re: Nintendo Download: 26th September (North America)

bizcuthammer

Wow. What a lame week. As far as VC stuff goes, its extremely disappointing that we only get one per week, and Ninty still has yet to put up N64 and GBA support when it was announced in January. We should be getting 2-3 games per week. And really, Donkey Kong 3?! Over stuff like Mario Bros 3, Mega Man 5, Star Fox, Super Mario RPG, Yoshi's Island, Link to the Past, Donkey Kong Country 1-3, Final Fantasy II & III, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Mega Man X2 & X3, and tons of other great games?! You're sitting on a treasure trove of the best retro games ever, and you're gonna give us only one per week, and you pick Donkey Kong 3? Go home, Ninty, you're drunk.

Re: Nintendo Direct: Check Out the Wii Fit U Direct Here

bizcuthammer

I love what they've done with this... First with Wii Fit U only being $20 is a great price. Second, allowing us to download the Wii Sports games individually at budget price is great, too. Now i only have to pay $10 to play bowling with my family instead of paying full price for all 5, when i really only want 1 or 2 of them. Well done on this, Ninty.

Re: Soapbox: Why Grand Theft Auto V Isn't For Me

bizcuthammer

Who even cares, anyway? People who dont like GTA have a right not to, same with people who do like it. Not everyone likes what you like, and thats not a bad thing, its just different. I personally dislike GTA, but i love Zelda, Mass Effect, Pokemon and Tomb Raider. I cant stand CoD or Elder Scrolls but i like to play Mario, Kingdom Hearts, Halo and Uncharted. There are different types of gamers who like different types of experiences. GTA lovers need to understand that their game doesnt appeal to everyone for many reasons, and that just because people dont like it doesnt make them a baby nintendo lover... I own all three consoles and play them all and play games in all types of genres from platformers, RPGs, FPSs, and Simulation games... And i dont like GTA for many reasons.

So GTA fans, get over yourselves and enjoy your new game instead of blasting people on the internet for having a different opinion. You have fun playing your new game, while i have fun playing mine (Wonderful 101, Rayman Legends and Madden 25), and lets stop bashing each other for having different opinions. This article is an opinion article by ONE writer for NL, and i'm sure even among NL writers there are varying opinions on this topic. Damien is entitled to his opinion, and so are you, but you shouldnt be blasting him for stating what he thinks.

Re: Soapbox: Why Grand Theft Auto V Isn't For Me

bizcuthammer

I'm in my mid 20's, and i feel the exact same way as was described in this article. The GTA series is 1) not that fun to play once you get past the initial scope of the game 2) incredibly sexist and violent for no real purpose and 3) only popular because of its content and the way it's depicted as a 'mature' title. Its content, to me, has always been disturbing, and its plots have always been stupid and meaningless. I played Vice City, San Andreas and IV and i felt that aside from upgraded graphics and increased scope of the city, the games are all the same. I think CoD might have evolved more over time than GTA has since III.

I dont get uncomfortable with the content of most games when it comes to sexual themes and violence, but those things have to serve a higher purpose in gaming than just being over the top with violence and sex just to say you did it, which is how it feels in GTA. I dont like playing as a character i hate and dont want to root for, and GTA puts me in control of that kind of guy, who has zero redeeming qualities. The only fun i got out of GTA was drivinng/wrecking cars, which i can do in tons of other games like Burnout and NFS.

Re: The Pokémon Company Teases "Special Announcement" On Monday

bizcuthammer

@KingH3nrry That's rather unfortunate for you, as the 3DS has some really amazing games worth owning. Its by far got a better library than WiiU, and is only getting better with upcoming releases of Pokemon X&Y and Zelda: Link Between Worlds and Smash Bros 3DS. Stuff like Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 7, Kid Icarus, Fire Emblem: Awakening, Luigi's Mansion 2, and Animal Crossing: New Leaf trump anything on WiiU right now, except maybe Pikmin 3. I'd heavily recommend a 3DS to any gamer who likes fun games.

As for the surprise? I'm really hoping its an early digital release for X&Y like a few days early. If it is, its a definite download for me.

Re: Talking Point: What Games Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue Seventeen

bizcuthammer

If i have time this weekend to play games, i'll likely be finishing up the final mission on Pikmin 3 after i collect the last 4 fruits i need for 100% completion. Then, my brothers and i will be smashing through Rayman Legends at some point. Oh and Wonderful 101 will be played sometime on the 15th... Just not sure when, as this Sunday is a busy day for me. I'll get around to it at some point though, after i beat Pikmin 3 lol. I need to finish the stuff i'm playing so that when Pokemon arrives October 12, i wont be ignoring an unfinished game. Seriously, Pokemon is probably going to eat up all my spare time until Thanksgiving rolls around, if not longer.
