Petition Started To Make Reggie A Playable Character In Upcoming Smash Bros. Title

I don't understand why so many people are opposed to this. It's just one of many characters. I would play as Reggie every time. Give me a Jack Tretton character to pummel!

i think it would be a good idea to put a real person in the game just because its different and hes a good fit for the game.i would just hope since hedbe so different he wasnt overpowered.

It's a funny idea but a waste of time in my opinion. People get angry/annoyed when their favourite characters get cut. They complain when other franchises aren't represented, yet they turn to a petition to get Reggie in the game and 'supposedly' take a valuable slot?

@Tsuchinoko: Adam is right — if you watch E3, you know who Reggie is. That's where most of our experience with him comes from, the presentations. It's the same as Iwata; we wouldn't really know him well without the Nintendo Directs, 'Iwata Asks' articles, and E3 presentations. If you don't watch any of those, you wouldn't know him either.

dunno if they'd bother going through the trouble, but I could see him being added as an unlockable or something, it'd certainly be a treat for western Nintendo fans. Not really any different from including Ness in the original roster IMO since if you hadn't played Earthbound you had absolutely no idea who he was (and since no one i knew back in those days had played EB, no one knew who the hell Ness was, lol), but you'd still use him and have fun playing as him regardless.

I swear to god..if Reggie were in this and Little Mac was not..I don't know, I'm just not sure I would want to live in this world anymore.

Yeah That's how I felt about Ness when I first saw him in the 64 Smash Bros. I used to really not like how they seemed to like to include characters that no one knew like Ness and then Marth in Melee, but after a while, I've actually come to know these characters (more specifically this year actually) a little better.
I'm just really concerned about this Smash. Sounds like the 3DS one is holding the Wii U one back, he took out story mode for what I think is a really lame reason, and they through in someone like the Wii Fit lady...I mean...they had to know 90 percent of us would think that's probably the oddest (and not really in a good way) addition in these games yet.

If you think about this, it really is ridiculous. When Ed Boon appeared in NBA Jam, he was the creator of the game. This in Nintendo equivalent would be Miyamoto, Sakurai, and Aonuma. Reggie isn't even the head of Nintendo- he's a spokesperson/mediator between the media and other companies. It's like having the marketing head for Paramount appear in the new Star Trek movie. It's mental!

I'm not saying I don't want it to happen though. Mental and Nintendo fit very well.

@Tsuchinoko: Your complaint was that (most of) the Japanese audience doesn't know Reggie. Mine is that (most of) the western audience didn't know Ness back in the day. We enjoyed playing as Ness just fine, and I'm sure the Japanese audience would have just as much fun getting to know Reggie if he were added to the SSBU roster.

I'm not saying it should happen, nor am I saying it will, I'm just saying that it could be fun for all involved and dismissing it solely by reason of part of the audience not knowing who the person is would be silly given that they've already gone down that road.

For some strange reason I would like him to be a playable character. It would be funny but at the end of the day that would be it. A joke character but I would rather have different Nintendo character in the game instead of Reggie.

As a DLC character then I would be all for it but as one of the original roster for the game I would have to say no.

First, the game is made in Japan, not an international setting, which is why sometimes there are characters like Lucas or even the Fire Emblem characters which are either Japanese only or not known well in the west, but each and every character in the Smash Brothers game has originated from a game made by Japanese companies. Second, Reggie is not a video game character. If your argument was that there should be a character in the series that Japanese fans don't know so well, a reversal of the fact that most westerners didn't know about Ness, I wouldn't have any problem with that. Having a video game character like the guy from Halo or whatever is fair enough, but in the end they're actual video game characters. Having a real life person be playable wouldn't never be anything more than a joke, and one that many people wouldn't get.

(b) The original SSB and SSBM had only first-party characters iirc. Brawl brought in characters outside Nintendo's ownership, and SSBU is fixin' to bring in more third party characters. They've broken that wall before, why not break it a bit more by having a real person this time around?

(c) it could start as a joke, but so are some of the other characters. Come on, Mr. Game&Watch? R.O.B? the Wii Fit Trainer? the Villager from Animal Crossing? 'Jokes' like these characters have been embraced by the community, and people are genuinely excited to give the new ones a try. I don't think including Reggie as an option would be such a horrible idea.

Oh god, no! I just cringed. I want iconic, charismatic videogame characters on Super Smash Brothers. Is Reginald Fils-Aimée a videogame character? I think not. Why do people like him so much to begin with? He's just a PR guy for USA, he was funny some years ago "kicking arses, taking names", but his time has long past by. He doesn't even have a say on the company's strategy, he's just a glorified, over-hyped salesman.

@Tsuchinoko ROB isn't necessarily a video game character. He was a peripheral for the Famicom/NES. Plus, your argument is that it wouldn't be anything more than a joke. Do you really think that the Wii Fit Trainer is meant to be a serious addition to the roster? And I think many people /would/ get the joke. We live in an age where if one wants to know about something, they have unlimited resources to delve deeper. Pretty much everyone has the internet, and searching has been made easier than ever with the advent of wi-fi and smart phones. I'm sure that's how most people discovered more about Lucas and Marth/Roy.

At the end of the day, it's just a video game. Sakurai seems to want to shake up the formula by adding Wii Fit Trainer, I don't think adding Reggie should displease anyone.

There is a story mode guys, it uses videos not cutscenes though and works more like melee's. Anyway i would love to see this for how funny it would be. I'm sure not to many would complain and as shadeJV said we should respect sakurai's vision of the game if regi's in it. I have signed it because it be funny and interesting to see. We should all sign it and see if it becomes a reality.

Reggie is cool but how about putting Captain N in the game? I mean c'mon some of his crew like Mega Man, Pit, Link, and his weapon the zapper is already in there, Captain N could use his gamemaster skill to help Link, Mega Man, and Pit in Adventure Mode just like in the cartoon where they would travel through different world based on a specific NES game.

I just signed it My Body Is Ready for the most interesting Smash Bros. character to date. Though I can't help but feel that the likes of these "random" characters like AC Villager and Wii Fit Trainer is making the new Smash Bros. seemed rushed and not taken seriously. That said I think it would still be a great idea to have Reggie as a character and be the last type of those somewhat goofy characters.

I really think there should be like a DLC pack that has Miyamoto, Reggie, and Iwata as playable characters and some kind of Nintendo office themed stage to go along with it. Oh well this is still a cool idea so I will sign.

From all the comments I've seen so far there are 3 major opinions. the first actually wants reggie to be a playable character, they really like him and would love to see him in the game. the second is in the middle, they sort of think it would be cool bu then again maybe not... and the third just flat out does not want reggie in the game, he is a real person and it would ruin the game.

What is the solution you ask? simple, there will be a choice in the options saying Reggie mode: on or off. I would personally choose off. I'm with the flat out no reggie group, but in order to please everyone just have a setting, after all no one wants to spend extra money on some downloadable content characters when they already bought the game.

But, the only problem is he would probably look strange and out of place. Trying to put a real life person into a game doesn't always work out. SO, what they should do is have Reggie's Mii as a playable character. Therefore, people that want Reggie can be happy, and people that want Mii's can be happy. Or, whatever Nintendo thinks is the best.

Of course, you could argue that the Wii fit trainer IS a video game character so it makes sense to add her, and you could say that Reggie doesn't make sense since he's a real life human being. But, remember this is Nintendo we're talking about. If Sakurai DID let Reggie be a playable character, Sakurai would decide the best way to present Reggie. Wither it be cell shaded, Mii, making him look real (there's a picture in this comment section that shows real life Reggie's in smash Bros.), 3D rendered (basically every character in Smash), or whatever Sakurai can think of.

Reggie in Smash Bros. That sounds just hilarious and awesome. But I think his alternate costumes then should be something like Shigeru Miyamoto, Satoru Iwata and Masahiro Sakurai himself. Playing as some Nintendo masterminds and the ancestor of Smash Bros, that sounds hilarious, ridiculous, and awesome.
And here's an extra hint: Mii! Although you won't actually play as Reggie, you could use his Mii, if you recreate it. I would love to play as the directors, or Mii's or something. It seems unrealistic, but still, wynaut?

I think Miis being playable is a bad idea. I don't know why, but it doesn't sound good. Since so many people are complaining that he's "not from Japan"(seriously? They aren't the only country that plays video games) and how he wouldn't fit in, so why not make him an assist trophy? Eh? He'd just pop up and say "MY BODY IS READY" and start throwing giant Nintendo consoles and a crazy fast pace.

It saddens me that there are way more people signing to this petition, that those that ask for real games like the SoulCalibur II one. People need to stop watching Reggie's PR and start playing good games. Like I said the guy's just a salesman, and even not that good a salesman. Yes, there was a time when I found Reggie to be funny and the epitome of cool from Nintendo. But, then I grew up. All I care is for Nintendo games and enjoying them without the amount of partisan bickering that inevitably is what PR guys do to keep fanboys happy with their brand. Sony and Microsoft have their Reggies too if you think about it.

I'm not opposed to this- it kind of reminds me of NBA Jam on the Genesis where you could use a code to play as Al Gore and Bill Clinton. I wouldn't advocate Reggie being a normal playable character, but perhaps a special character you could unlock with a code or an accomplishment. Or maybe a boss for a single player mode- that could work.

It would be a better and funnier addition than the Wii Fit Trainer if you ask me, fact, there was nothing funny about that addition, just wasted space, time, and effort. Also, just because you didn't like the story mode and cutscenes in Brawl doesn't somehow make it immature for others to be against their removel. My opinion on this is very simple, and it is no to the idea overall. With so many other deserving Nintendo characters that should be in the game, its sad that people actually want to see this. How about we get some characters from Golden Sun, Xenoblade, Mike Jones(Startropics), Little Mac, and Takamaru first?

The roster should be filled with characters who debuted in video games. ROB already stretches it as we speak although he earned his place by appearing in Mario Kart.

My issue with this is the fact that so many other deserving characters would get the axe to make this joke work. And I really hate to say this, but Reggie is one heck of a good PR man. But there are other people that are more important to the history to Nintendo then him. Why don't we make Howard Lincoln a playable character? Or Minoru Arakawa?

I am firmly opposed to giving roster spots away to characters that don't deserve it. As cool as Naruto, Goku, Superman, Batman, Darth Vader, and any other character you can imagine would be in the roster, they don't deserve to be in a Smash Bros game. My opinion applies to real-life people as well.

Only video game characters should be in Smash Bros, and they need to have close ties to Nintendo. Sonic and Mega Man both make sense, but I'll be honest, I was opposed to Snake being in Brawl. He just seemed out of place, and he is pretty much known thanks to the MSX and Playstation. Most of his Nintendo apperances have been ports of games that were on other systems.

Nintendo has such a deep history with tons of great characters to pick from. Do we really need to use a real-life person as a character and waste a roster spot? At least the Wii Fit Trainer represents the casual market and the Wii era of Nintendo. What in the world would Reggie represent? A good PR guy who said a bunch of catchy phrases several years ago? A guy who runs NOA?

I'm kinda curious, are some of the people supporting this the same ones who want Jigglypuff, Mr. Game & Watch, and ROB cut from the roster in the new game? Because those three deserve their spot a lot more then Reggie.

Why stop with Reggie? Nintendo should acquire Pizza Hut completely and put all that in Super Smash Bros.

Because, you know, Super Smash Brothers is just a really slick ad machine that happens to be a great game. It will feature characters that will sell copies of Smash Brothers, and also other games featuring those characters. As much as I'd love to see, I don't know, Blue Virus from Dr. Mario or some random obscure character, it's not Project x Zone or something. It has a different purpose.

But, for the record, I very much agree with the person who suggested Takamaru. They could be sitting on something significant with that character.

It'd be awesome to have Reggie as a playable character for just a weekend or so, I don't think this would hurt anyone and many people would really enjoy it.

Its totally not. sure people don't want him to take the place of one of their other characters they want to see coming in but this wouldn't just be a joke character he would be actually playable just like wii fit trainer. you people need to lighten up a little and give it a chance

@Caryslan Actually, I have no problem with mr g&w or jigglypuff. Quite frankly, whether we like it or not, they're most likely gonna return. Not only has jigglypuff been in every game, but she is 1 of 2 characters, Alongside Luigi, who have started as secret characters & are still secret characters to this day. Mr Game & Watch is probably nintendo's first ever character, if mistaken, one of them hands down. I love him & don't want him to go! ROB, I can live without. It's the fact that ROB originated from the real world & had no game of his own. Sure he got into Mario Kart, but it wasn't his game. He's only appeared in that way. He never had as much fame as reggie has got now. He wasn't even that good of a toy. He started as a real thing in the real world. Reggie is the same. ROB was a toy, reggie is real life. There is no excuse for ROB getting in 7 there's no excuse on why reggie can't capitalize on it
