Re: Talking Point: Does Nintendo's Next Console Have To Be 'Another' Switch?

bigpale

@Jiggies I'm sure Nintendo would love to sell us two different systems, but I think fans would complain because it would be like the Switch vs Switch Lite except it would remove the portability of the Switch). I think fans would just complain and argue that Nintendo should've just released one system that can do both, and use a sliding scale of quality depending on home vs away. I mean, the Switch already has dynamic resolution, etc.

Re: Talking Point: Does Nintendo's Next Console Have To Be 'Another' Switch?

I really don't see any way Nintendo can go back to a purely home console. They have already integrated their home and portable game divisions. The technology has caught up to the point where a portable system would only be slightly technically inferior to whatever home system they would put out (since they won't put out another tech monster and sell it at a loss).

The only reason they might not do what would essentially be a "Switch 2" is because Nintendo has always been reticent to retread the same idea. On the other hand: Gameboy--Gameboy Color--Gameboy Advance was a threesome simply iterating on the same basic idea, so maybe they view the Switch more as a portable system that happens to play on TV, meaning they'll be more content to just upgrade the internals, put on a slightly different coat of paint and call it a day.

On the other other hand, the DS jumped to the 3DS by adding a giant gimmick on top of what was otherwise just an upgrade to the internals and a different coat of paint. So maybe we'll get some gimmick slapped on top of what would otherwise just be a Switch 2.

Maybe a second try at VR? Maybe a Switch-like system that slides into a headset ala the LABO VR kit? It would have to be optional (but for the few Nintendo games that they would of course release that almost single-handedly justify the gimmick).

NINTENDO SWITCH VR:
Play it at home, play it on the go, play it in your head!

Re: Talking Point: How's Your Switch Holding Up After 5 Years?

bigpale

Had mine since release day and it's pretty banged up (having three boys to share it with will do that).

The kickstand is gone, the grill over the vents are all broken and it's pretty scuffed around the bezel. The SD Card reader only works sporadically (I need to look into a replacement), and I'm on my fourth pair of joycons.

But she's in good shape for the shape she's in.

Re: Talking Point: How Many Hours Is A 'Short' Game For You?

bigpale

It's hard to remember how long it took me to beat Super Metroid for the first time. Granted, that was back in 1994. It probably took me 30 hours, with a lot of that featuring me wandering around, being lost, shooting things without much care for progressing.

I'd say an average, leisurely paced, non speedrun of the game would take the normal player about 15 hours.

Metroid Dread can probably be finished under the same circumstances in less than half that time. The game is great, and I'm sure a lot of work went into interconnecting the world and laying out the progression, but I wish it was 50% larger.

Re: Soapbox: Nintendo Switch Online's Library Is A Snapshot Of '90s Gaming Shelves

bigpale

I think it would be helpful to compile a list of the NES and SNES games that (A) Nintendo could release, but (B) have not yet/won't release for whatever reason.

It's one thing to say "I wish the Ninja Turtles games were on NES Online!" but it's totally different to say "Nintendo sucks for not releasing the Ninja Turtles NES games on NES Online!"

So really, what NES/SNES games does Nintendo have the rights to release that they haven't yet put on the platform?

It's an entirely separate discussion to talk about GBA/N64/NGC support, etc.

Re: Talking Point: Do You Replay Games?

bigpale

Different game for different reasons.

I've probably logged more hours playing Tetris and Pac Man than any other game, because it's nothing to just turn it on and be playing within two minutes.

Bigger games like Majoras Mask, Resident Evil 4, and Super Metroid I've replayed a bunch, but they take longer to beat so they're not games I can just sit down and start playing when I only have an hour to kill.

And then there are games like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI, which require a firm commitment of time. I love them and love replaying them but as I get older they get harder to go back to because my time is less abundant than it once was.

Re: Nintendo Won't Be Announcing A New Switch Model "Any Time Soon"

bigpale

Honestly, the system is selling so incredibly as is that they shouldn't rock the boat until there's simply no more life left to squeeze out of it. Only then should they release a "Switch Pro," or whatever, and it should be a full-on upgrade/next-gen replacement (backwards compatible with the OG version, of course).

Re: Poll: What's The Best 2D Mario Game?

bigpale

3 and World are my only 10s, but 3 takes the cake.

The bite sized levels are like little bursts of creative adrenaline, with no levels being alike.

Mario World has the bigger, more secret filled levels, tighter controls, more versatile moves, and a grander scope, but it still just feels like a souped up Mario 3. I prefer the original.

That being said, Mario World has the best soundtrack of the 2D games (tied with Galaxy for the overall prize), and the last good soundtrack in a 2D Mario game. That castle theme is perfect.

Re: Feature: The Best, And Worst, Nintendo Commercials Ever

bigpale

For me there's a top three.

The Mario 3 commercial with the multitudes calling his name. I remember that game from my childhood.

The Smash commercial where they're all beating each other up. That's the commercial I remember from my teenage years.

The "Wii would like to play" commercial. That's the commercial from my adulthood.

Re: E3 2012: Watch the Nintendo Press Conference Live Here

bigpale

I mean, if the WiiU was coming out NEXT year, then fine.

But this sucker is dropping in 5 months. Where is Retro Studios? This is the biggest stage to show off games before the holiday release. Unless there's a special Nintendo-only conference (like a Spaceworld) that I'm missing...
