I think people’s negativity about this part of NSO isn’t as bad as during the 1st 4 months that over-blew the lack of other platform-related legacy services like this or a straightforward Virtual Console where both Nindies would suffer, so would people’s wallets and scare away other Virtual Console-type banners like Arcade Archives.
Honestly; Virtual Console was great because the concept was unorthodox and new. Why a Virtual Console will NEVER happen is the fact alone that other companies realized they can successfully sell their retro games THEIR way, through both individual banners and collections like Arcade Archives, Johnny Turbo’s Arcade, stuff like SNK 40th Anniversary Collection, SEGA Genesis Collection, and Atari Flashback Collection. Oh, and did I forget Nintendo let a third-party group of programers go to their Redmond, Washington NOA HQ to flash a ROM image of the world’s only working Sky Skipper arcade cabinet and release it alongside Mario Bros., Donkey Kong, Punch-Out!!, etc. under Arcade Archives?
To those tired of NES games and say “just discontinue this nonsense and get straight to 90’s and 00’s consoles, NES games are already on other things”: You forget about Wii, Wii U, and the NES Classic Edition being already being discontinued with the former’s online services just being shuttered, Their only being 13M Wii U consoles compared to 101M Wii systems, and 8M or so NES Classics. The 3DS with 72.5M is in a odd spot considering people want it discontinued, it too having NES game, so saying that is pointless. I’m not holding my breath for SNES and heck, think it and GCN are overrated. (no, not overused, OVERRATED)
With every announcement; I always hear the ever pointless;
BLAH BLAH BLAH! VIRTUAL CONSOLE! BLAH BLAH BLAH! GAMECUBE GAMES! BLAH! BLAH! BLAH! N64 GAMES! BLAH! BLAH! BLAH! SNES GAMES! BLAH! BLAH! BLAH! NES GAMES ARE GARBAGE! HEAPING GARBAGE! STUPID, DUMB DUMB DUMB, GROSS, GARBAGE! BLAH! BLAH! BLAH! PEOPLE WHO LIKE NES GAMES ARE UGLY, FAT, IDIOTS! BLAH! BLAH! BLAH! WE DON’T WANT FREE GAMES! BLAH! BLAH! BLAH! STOP MAKING US PAY $20 A YEAR! BLAH! BLAH! BLAH! DEDICATED SERVERS WITH BLACK HAT HACKERS AND DDOS! BLAH! BLAH! BLAH! ESHOP MUSIC! BLAH! BLAH! BLAH! THEMES!
Honestly; To the casual observer, someone would not process what a weird, and somewhat creepy-looking wooden puppet in a blue cape and hat has to do with the ‘Super Mario’ series. Why are people into a one-off character like Geno also brings up more questions than answers.
If the petitions to cancel Metroid Prime: Federation Force, Paper Mario: Color Splash, Hey Pikmin!, and even those Nintendo Switch Online are to say anything; it is that regardless; Nintendo will push foward regardless of reception.
Classic games are there, but there is alot that could not had cameto the eShop under their respective banners and be drowned out by 20+ year old games like Donkey Kong Country, and that allows more exposure for stuff like what we seen in Arcade Archives and Digital Eclipse’s 6 compilations. Plus, the fact that it’s included for members of the Online Service means that they will not spend over $3K on old games again and again.
It too makes me cringe that people call the NES “a pile of 80’s 8-bit garbage” (despite the fact I grew up in the days of GCN) and makes me laugh when people demand to have these games available ala carte at sometimes high prices. But honestly I could hope that we see more down the line from other systems, not GCN, due to the fact there was no promise of it.
@ekwcll, take it from me; I bought a good chunk of NES games via the eShop on Wii U more than SNES or N64 (the so called; “relevent” retro systems) strangely, I never grew up in the era of NES, but I somehow remained interested in those games; not due to avaiblility, or through the rosy tint of nostalgia but by their more pick up and play nature. It makes me cringe especially when people now call the library and the NES entirely “a pile of 8-bit garbage” and hail the SNES, N64 and GCN especially as treasure.
@ThomasS, while true; the lack of patience and tolerence from critics has left a bitter taste for me, and has given me the impression that gamers today had begun to signifigantly loose patience and started to become more salty, rather than taking their expectations with a grain of salt, or brick of salt lick in that matter.
Dedicated Servers: Xbox One and PS4 still do P2P mostly, and having dedicated servers is a pain to Nintendo to implement and maintain for every online multiplayer game, and is a pain for end users due to lag, and how servers can dump everybody when a single user drops out. What happens when there’s high server traffic? or a DDOS attack like the one in 2014?
System level voice chat: look at yourself in the mirror wearing a headset, look at the guy manning the drive thru or cash register of your favorite fast food resteraunt, look at those few people wearing mic-enabled headsets walking about, look up how much that headset costs, and understand NOT everybody wants to spend close to, or over $100/€100 on a headset, or owns a headset. Another thing; someone being disgustingly vulgar in something like Smash Ultimate? you can just mute them, but do you want to interupt your gameplay experience by going through submenus on your system while playing? Or just mute them at the touch of their icon on the spot at half the time and effort?
Virtual Console: look up the prices for the games on each platform; organize how many games you have on each platform, factor in the Wii to Wii U upgrade, and see how much money you wasted within the course of 10 years, and compare that to the 12-month membership fee of Nintendo Switch Online.
Online Achievement/Trophy systems: Do we really need them outside of Bragging to and Ragging others?
System Message Boards: Miiverse was a thing, and PSN and XBL’s sevices were full of those man babies/reckless kids being totally immoral, sexist, sadistic, gross, and being... too mean for their own good. Arlo did a video on Miiverse not being on Switch, and look up Extra Credit’s video on Harassment while your at it, to see what I mean.
Internet Browser: Switch is a gaming system, not a tablet, or something to be exploited like Wii U, we have these things on our smartphones, and devices that call themselves “tablets”.
EVERY game using Save Data Cloud back up: Do that and what’s the point of catching Pokémon next year where you can just buy a Legendary, rare OP pocket monster from someone who uses both online trading, and exploits save data by backing up again and again? It’s wasn’t Nintendo’s execs that made the decision; it was The Pokémon Company’s decision.
People demanding all of this: They are like a kid who dosen’t get what he/she wants and is violent about it because she/he did not specified what he/she wanted exactly and not talking it over with her/his (grand)parents/guardian/relatives. Fans could of reached out to a rep or something to express what they wanted ‘exactly’ out of this whole service and get an idea what Nintendo as a whole thinks about it while understanding and getting a reasonable expectation. In other words; share your requests with a Nintendo rep via email and see what the company thinks and why. If your going to write a review about the app, don’t treat it like an extension of a comment on YouTube!
My expectation: The introduction of Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Nintendo Switch Online and Game Boy: Nintendo Switch Online sometime in the next year, overall tweaking, refinement, and improvement of the system’s online Peer to Peer abilities, and continue to improve the concept of using the phone app and making the point WHY it’s better than the old fashioned way, and even allow people to link their Discord accounts.

@AtlanteanMan, if you looked at the workaround Nintendo did for their NES Zapper games, and apply that with how they adapted Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker’s touch controls to pointer controls via gyroscope; you will find out that it‘s STUPIDLY easy, this isn’t 2005!
@AlexSora89, but for arcade purists; it’s glad to at least acknowledge this version’s existance. Honestly; I don’t know why that stuff about Smash Bros., Brawlhalla & Mario Kart, and Arcade Archives “originally being a poor man’s VC” makes sense.
@NintoRich, as far as I l know they used the VS. moniker on the NA version’s marquee to emphasize the game running on Nintendo VS. system hardware. The reason why this was changed to Excitebike is to match with the Japanese market, considering the aforementioned game was simply titled ‘Excitebike’ when it came out originally and to avoid this confusion with the Disk System ‘Vs. Excitebike’.
1. 7 tracks instead of the 5 included in the NES game.
2. The track creation is NOT included.
3. You have to add credits and press a dedicated START button as is a arcade cabinet, only through emulation and typically by default, through the L & R buttons.
If Gamevice was to sueing; it would be this considering it works just like the Gamevice. I don’t see any reason why they want to sue Nintendo over the concept of the Switch, and compare it to the Wikipad, but I see a good reason why Time Owner should be sued. So to retro_gamer_22, you are not alone.
I think he was just irate with the approval process. Ive once explained the situation with a Magic Pixel media representitive regarding the release of https://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/zaccaria-pinball-switch, to me it feels like Nintendo was planning the game’s release where it isn’t a packed day, (like Thursday) hoping to give it enough exposure as soon as possible.
As of Boyd’s frustration with advertising the game’s release; that isn’t Nintendo’s buisness. If I was the one marketing the game; I’d push for more promotional material, like more trailers, and stuff like that. For that I say “he’s whiney”.
