While not essential from a gameplay point of view, one standout moment from the final Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct earlier this month was the lyrical addition to "Lifelight" - the main theme for the new game. Blasting our delicate ears with surprise and wonder, this new vocal element introduced itself in the second half of that World of Light trailer (you know, with the light beams), adding yet another dose of epicness to proceedings before leaving fans wanting more.
But who do we have to thank for the song? Well, game director Masahiro Sakurai has shared a tweet to reveal the stars of the show, as seen below.
The piece was composed by Hideki Sakamoto, a Japanese composer who has previously worked on arrangements for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS, and also served as the composer for Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time / Darkness. For the Japanese version (which you can listen to here) Erina Koga provided the vocals - Sakurai notes that, despite her talent and strong performance, Erina is only eighteen years of age.
For the English-language version, it was voice actor and singer Abby Trott who provided the vocal track. Her voice acting credits can be found on titles like Spider-Man, Halo Wars 2, NieR Automata, and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Spirit of Justice to name a few, and she's also been involved with plenty of animated series.
If you want to relive that trailer in all its glory (the song kicks in at around 2:25) we'll leave it right here for you:
Are you a fan of the vocal arrangements for the song? Are you feeling the hype for the game's 7th December release? Tell us below.

One of my favourite Smash related theme songs.
Wow. She is the voice of Maya
I love the lyrics and both vocals sound very talented
Amazing job by BOTH Ms. Koga and Ms. Trott. Both did an excellent job, and are more reasons why the 7th cannot come soon enough.
I really like how Nintendo is creating those theme songs with vocals. Jump Up superstar has been for a long time in my playlist, and this one is going there too in short. I also often listen to the Fire Emblem Fates song that also has some great covers even on Spotify. Then there are the great remakes of oldies from Bayonetta. The playlist is building up with some great pieces! Please Nintendo, go on like this!
God. The wait is getting harder and harder.
Great as the song is, I wish there was a little bit more of a pause between the singing portions and have a bit of a purely instrumental moment, because once they start singing, they practically don't stop until the end of the song. This is the sole reason for me why I can't put it beyond Brawl's theme song. It's still a really wonderful song and I really love it and have listened to it many times already, but it's just not quite as good as it could be, if you ask me.
Can't wait to see if they will release an Ultimate OST collection, even if I have to import it from Japan ^_^
I'm just speaking for myself here, but the problem with Lifelight is that it gets old pretty fast. Amazing when it was first revealed, but I don't really want to listen to it anymore.
What a grand song. Perfect for building up what is indeed the ultimate fight.
Make this wait stop.
For a Smash Bros with the most characters, you only start with 8 characters... the least in all Smash Bros. Also, the Adventure mode is just Smash with Hearthstone, not so innovative.
@Giygas_95 same. I think we can all agree that Brawl's theme was the best. (even if we don't understand what their saying, LOL)
@Retupmocnin Its a nod to the first game that started it all... Its not technically the least fighters count at all!
@Reigestugatensho Yep, Brawl is still the best.
@Yosher I agree with you there. The talent is amazing on both versions and as a song forbthe trailer it's decent but it is too busy lyrically for me.
Still listening to it in hype though lol
She has talent but I don't like the theme song at all. I had to turn down the volume during the trailer.
Soooo where can we download or buy the song? I'd really like to add the MP3 to my playlist.
I remember crying when I first heard the song. Happy memories really did hit me like a frieght train.
@Mogster The video is the entire song... so download the video and take the audio from it.
For a good while I thought it was https://www.youtube.com/user/JubyPhonic.
@Retupmocnin I get this feeling that this opinion is going to be the least popular one, considering that everyone I talked to and the fans and journalists that experienced World of Light and Spirit Board early are saying that it might be the best single-player experiences in Smash history(which means it will most likely be better than Brawl's Supspace Emissary). Also, wasn't it known that most fans did not like the platforming segments of Suspace Emissary, hence as to why is not being implemented in World of Light?
@Retupmocnin I don't think you get how unlockables work. Or hearthstone.
@Mew I already unlocked all the characters using someone's save file.
@Ricube There's a lot more good video game music with vocals out there like "we all lift together"(warframe), just about every song with vocals that was done for the world ends with you, kingdom hearts, sonic games, persona 3-5, smt nocturne(the official CD was better then in game tbh, mostly due to how the music was cut down for the ps2.
@Retupmocnin ...Do you even have the game?
@Alantor28 pirated the leaked copy, i assume. as crap as nintendo life is for censoring talk about innocent modding, i wish they would go ahead and ban anyone who's flaunting to already have or played the game illegally.
@Mew I agree. Retupmochin is lower than low.
@Alantor28 Jealousy will get you nowhere.
@Retupmocnin It's not jealousy, it's disgust. U got the game through illegal means. U pirates make us sick. If u did got the game through piracy, then we look down on you for being a thief. If not, we'll still look down on you for supporting piracy.
@Alantor28 “I’m dishonest, and a dishonest man you can always trust to be dishonest. Honestly. It’s the honest ones you want to watch out for, because you can never predict when they’re going to do something incredibly … stupid.” - Jack Sparrow
Better song then Jump up superstar, yet nobody is talking about it...
