@JaxonH Oh gosh that January Direct was a nice surprise, but it totally backfired in the long run because it's now clear that most of those games are coming next year. I have total faith in 3D World...it's a 3D Mario, what could go wrong (plus the second trailer shot the anticipated epicness level up by 500%)? I suspect they'll host another major Direct in either December or January to announce release dates for early 2014 games, such as DKC:TF and Mario Kart 8. E3 next year is bound to be big...I'm already looking forward to it. I don't care if they do a press conference or a Direct (I actually preferred the Direct over a conference. It was quick and to the point with no long annoying demos), as long as they blow the lid off of all of the projects they're currently working on. I see the Wii U making a revival.
@X-Factor Mario Party: Island Tour still exists...it was delayed in the UK but it is still scheduled for release here in the US on Nov. 22...yet we still know hardly anything about it. As for Yoshi's New Island...meh where's Yarn Yoshi?????
Nintendo better be ready to market the Wii U like hell...now that DK got delayed, they have to rely on Mario to pull them out of their misery for this Christmas. I don't doubt Nintendo, but it's pretty obvious that the Wii U needs some serious marketing.
I completely agree with it. With the recent price drop, the price is fine. The marketing, on the other hand, needs lots of improvement. I've had numerous people ask me what console I game on, and when I respond with "Wii U," 90% of them follow-up with, "What is the Wii U? I've never heard if it."
I have never seen a Wii U commercial on TV. Ever. I see ads for it all over the Internet (which is good but it's typically a link to the Wii U on Amazon) but I have not once seen a Wii U commercial on TV. In contrast, I see 3DS ads on TV all the time. I hope Nintendo gets their marketing act together for the holiday season. Now that Donkey Kong has been delayed, Nintendo has to rely on Mario to be their saving grace this year. Lots of bundles and exceptional marketing can help bring the Wii U out of its misery.
I love the Wii U, and I still have faith in it. I don't enjoy engaging in the console war or debating whether the Wii U is next gen or not. I see no point in this. But I will agree that there has been a serious, serious lack of marketing over the year and Nintendo needs to get their act together. With the PS4 and XB1 launching next month, the rest of 2013 and 2014 will be crucial for Nintendo to pull the Wii U to its feet. Please don't blow it Nintendo. You have a great console here, now show it!
I'm quite convinced that this game is holding back a lot more than we originally thought...for example, what is the Comet Observatory doing in the official art for the game? What if Bowser secretly kidnapped Rosalina? I mean, there are only 7 confirmed Sprixies, and if this game will be anything like 3D Land, there will be 8 main worlds.
I also think the whole carnival theme of the game is very interesting...I really wonder how that will play out.
I'd rather have a new Luigi's Mansion game for Wii U than a port of Dark Moon, in all honesty. Dark Moon was perfectly crafted around the 3DS, now they need to make a third game that embraces the GamePad. Plus the environment would look simply stunning in HD.
I wouldn't go off saying this is true. Nintendo would've mentioned something. Although, one retailer did list a "Super Mario 3D Land 2" for 3DS, and well, now look, we have 3D World for Wii U. I still wouldn't count on it though.
Nintendo, please just make a new Luigi's Mansion game for the Wii U. And put the Polterpup in it.
This is the moment where I turn around in the hater's faces and say, "HA!"
But in all honesty, I was not expecting that. After the E3 trailer, I envisioned something completely different...not anymore. GOOD JOB, Nintendo, this looks absolutely fantastic! Can't wait for November 22!
I don't know why, but I am MINDBLOWN by the fact that you can now play Wii games on the GamePad. I didn't even know the GamePad had a sensor bar built into it! This update has blown me away so far. Looking forward to tomorrow's Nintendo Direct! Keep me mindblown, Nintendo! Please don't let me down!!
@Georgethecow It's probably the major summer/fall update. I expected as much, with the maintenance occurring today and the sudden announcement of a Nintendo Direct tomorrow. This HAS to be the big update.
I'm hoping for more footage for Super Mario 3D World, as well as some hints for the plot. I'm DYING to know what the story is!
Also wanting to see Miiverse for 3DS and when the next major Wii U update will take place.
@Georgethecow Wait...your system is updating? Did you have to manually start the update? Because my brother is using our Wii U right now and it's not downloading an update...
PS: That picture of Iwata makes it look like he's about to beat the crap out of the listener. xD
This is pretty offensive towards Miyamoto. I actually liked Sticker Star (I know, I'm so WEIRD because I like a game everyone else hates...), Dark Moon, and Pikmin 3 is my favorite Wii U game at the moment. Sure, he doesn't make as many games anymore, but that doesn't mean he's lost his touch.
@Metaknight_3Raw The thing that makes the 3DS so good and happy is the over-excessiveness of first party games. Nintendo IS applying it to the Wii U, as the long list of major games is starting to be released.
I can understand her calling the Wii U a Wii at first (I call it "the Wii" all the time), but as a reporter she should've corrected herself. But for the 2DS and 3DS, there's no excuse. We've had some form of the DS since 2004, people should know how to properly pronounce it at this point in time. And the 2DS has the same graphics resolution as the 3DS, just without the 3D. This is why reporters do research before writing articles and doing news videos!
Thank you so much, Yamauchi-san. You not only made Nintendo what it is today, you also changed the gaming industry forever. Without you, the video game industry would be entirely different. My condolences to you and your family, and may you rest in peace. You will be dearly missed.
I'm all in! Our family LOVES Wii Sports (and Resort) so this is perfect! Maybe they'll add the Resort sports as DLC at a later date...I want the air sports and swordplay sports!!!
Loving all the indie support for Wii U! It's nice that Nintendo is reaching out to the indies since it's pretty obvious they won't have such luck with SOME 3rd parties.
I've read a lot of complaints about Mario Kart not being released this Christmas. Think about this, though:
Would you rather have them rush to finish the game and get a half-baked Mario Kart? Because as great as Mario Kart 7 was, it felt VERY rushed. Mario Kart 8 is on track to being a beautiful, wonderful game. I would rather have Nintendo take their time and COMPLETELY finish it rather than rush to get it out for Christmas.
But you guys seem to be forgetting a major title: Super Mario 3D World. 3D Mario's are a big deal. 3D Land was arguably the 3DS's saving grace, if the fact that it's the current best-selling 3DS game is any indicator. 3D World will play a MASSIVE role this holiday season. Nintendo is making a very smart move releasing it right before Black Friday, and the busy cover art will certainly draw eyes.
Yes, Mario Kart is a monster seller, but just because we won't have it for Christmas isn't the end of the world. We're still getting a 3D Mario, and if Nintendo markets 3D World (and the rest of 2013's games, for that matter), the Wii U will be well on its way to success, and Mario Kart, Smash, and Zelda will continue the success.
But if you want Nintendo to rush Mario Kart, by all means keep complaining. I would rather have a polished game than a game that feels rushed.
I would probably go for the 3DS. Why? Well, does the iPad have Luigi's Mansion? Does the iPad have Super Mario 3D Land? Does the iPad have Mario Kart? Does the iPad have Animal Crossing? No? Then what DOES the iPad have? Oh yeah, 99 cent games like Candy Crush that people forget about the next day.
While yes, some kids may go for the iPad, but a sizeable chunk will go for the 3DS as well. The 3DS was launched into the boom of touch-screen gaming with mobile devices, and it struggled at first. But it look at it now, it's sustaining a healthy life through all of its troubles.
The 3DS is fine. Nintendo is fine. The Wii U WILL be fine. These guys are just jealous Nintendo is stealing attention from them.
Oh, and won't Nintendo be on iOS soon anyway? They're making the official Miiverse app, remember?
If this thing costs more than the Wii U (which comes with the console, GamePad, accessories, and a freakin' free game!) and it only comes with THIS...I think I'll pass.
PPFFFFFFFFFTTTTTTT!!!! This guy is such an idiot! Nintendo is dominating the handheld market! Always have, always will. Only 12-and-under play Nintendo games? Why don't you tell him to go watch the E3 wrap video, or the PAX wrap video, and what do you know? Every. Single. Person. Was. An. Adult.
@3Daniel Yes. The OS has to take up some of the storage space. Even if it comes preinstalled in the future, it will still take up space on the hard-drive. For example, my 8GB iPod Touch really only has about 6.5GB of storage because 2.5GB of the storage space is taken up my the OS.
I'm a little upset with the Wii U price cut because I'm an early adopter. If they do an ambassador's program like they did with the 3DS and release some good games from maybe the N64 or (dare I say) the GameCube for free, then I'll be fine.
applause Well said, Ubisoft, well said. Nintendo has a huge selection of games coming to Wii U, and the Wii U is a great console...but we can all agree that they have done an incredibly poor job at marketing it. Every person that comes to my house, they always point to the GamePad and ask, "What's that?" I say, "It's the Wii U controller!" They always say, "...what's a Wii U..."
Nintendo needs to get their marketing act together. I'm starting to see hope for their marketing campaign...the Pikmin 3 commercial was the first Wii U commercial that wasn't cringeworthy and it's been popping up everywhere. Keep this up, Nintendo, and maybe more people will buy your console!!
@Pachterkid Name one third party game that has been a Nintendo system seller in the past 10 years. That's right, there isn't one. People don't buy Nintendo consoles for the third party support...they get them to play Nintendo's IPs, which, the purpose of this video was to show off the IPs. That doesn't mean there aren't any 3rd party games, in fact, watch this:
@SirMario Seriously? THAT'S the reason you're not buying Wii U? No offense to you or the Mario Party series, but Mario Kart is 10 times better. And there is bound to be a Mario Party on Wii U at some point. The company's working on the 3DS version at the moment, so they'll probably start Mario Party 10 once the 3DS one is finished.
@sinalefa I think the developer interview with Shigeru Miyamoto served as the Iwata Asks for Pikmin 3. In that interview, Miyamoto talks about his inspiration and creation of the game, why it was put on Wii U, etc. In fact, the Pikmin website links you to the developer interview rather than an Iwata Asks interview, like most Nintendo game websites do.
This Direct was rather...uneventful. When Nintendo said "more info on previously announced Wii U/3DS titles," I thought they meant the huge titles announced at E3 that we hardly know anything about. I'm hoping for the next Direct will be better.
"We're not able to cover up weaknesses in the core gameplay by making the graphics prettier or adding cutscenes, or whatever. The concern, first and foremost, is the core of the game and the quality of the gameplay." Other companies, TAKE NOTE! GAMEPLAY MATTERS MORE THAN GRAPHICS!
Good, something to look forward to tomorrow when I come home from school. I was hoping that maybe they'd pop the cap on some of these mysterious "yet to be announced" Wii U titles, but this is good too. I want to know more about some of the E3 games, especially the ones that are coming out sooner, such as Wind Waker HD, Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze, and Mario 3D World.
IGN is free to suck it. So is Pachter. So are all the other Wii U naysayers out there. This is getting extremely old. YES Wii U is struggling, WE GET IT. Just wait until 3D World and Mario Kart come around, this thing will be selling like hotcakes.
The Wii U is an awesome console. I love playing it so much. I love it SO much better than the original Wii, you won't even believe it. I'm just waiting on the games. Looking forward to everything Nintendo has in store. Have some faith, people.
