I'm happy to hear that he's making a speedy recovery. After hearing a vague "health-related reasons," I figured that it would be a stress-related sickness and he just needed a brief recovery period. I never would've expected that he would've required surgery.
In any case, I'm glad he's recovering well and I'm looking forward to seeing him once again in the next Nintendo Direct.
Like others have said, Nintendo really should focus on the single GamePad they have now. I do love the GamePad and it's one of my favorite controllers, but Nintendo's main priority should be capitalizing its potential, not worrying about dual support.
Although, it would be nice if Nintendo started selling extra GamePads in stores. I have three younger siblings and you know how that can be. So far our GamePad has survived (we've had our Wii U since launch) but it's taken several minor beatings (the most extreme would be my accidentally dropping it on the corner of a wooden bench to reach over and turn a lamp on). It would be nice to have a spare GamePad on hand.
All I really want is a cloud system now. The last thing I want is to lose 3D World and Mario Kart 8 should my system die, since I have those games downloaded. Otherwise the Wii U OS is perfect in my eyes.
I can see why Nintendo would be reluctant to jump into the virtual reality realm, especially after what happened with the Virtual Boy. I foresee them waiting it out for now and maybe jumping into the virtual reality realm once Oculus and/or Morpheus release so that they can see how they impact sales.
@unrandomsam The thing that makes Mario Kart games worth the full price is the replay value. Mario Kart games have some of the highest replay value because of online. Because of the replay value, Mario Kart is worth the full price. That and the fact that the courses are impeccably designed and the gameplay is perfect.
I'm really happy that Nintendo decided to develop this game. I loved these levels in 3D World and I'm really glad they decided to flesh it out. Looking forward to the next trailer where they'll hopefully show more new concepts. As for the price, I doubt it will be a full $60. That's just a placeholder price on Amazon. $40 or $50 sound more likely. Nonetheless, I'm looking forward to it!
@rjejr I think maybe Nintendo learned their lesson about showing a game for the first time too early. We've known about the new Zelda game since at least last E3, but they said it wasn't ready to be shown off, so they waited until this E3 to show the new footage.
@Dr_42o Why? Only Nintendo would try to have fun at E3. All the other companies are too uptight trying to prove which console is better and it's honestly getting old. E3 is supposed to be a place where we all have fun playing newly announced games, and who says Nintendo can't get in on the fun too? No need to be embarrassed.
After owning a Wii U for 18 months, I can say that the GamePad is an awesome controller and I still love it to this day. Sure it hasn't been utilized much yet, but I can see the potential, especially after this E3, where the majority of the games made intuitive use of the GamePad.
I also love some of the GamePad's uses outside of games too. I especially love using it with Amazon Instant Video. I love that it gives me brief bios on the actors and tells me who is on screen at any given time.
Off-TV Play is a real selling point for the GamePad. I've made use of it several times and it allows me to lie in my bed and play games while my siblings watch a DVD on the TV.
On top of all of this, the GamePad is probably one of the most comfortable controllers I've ever held. My thumbs naturally rest on the analog sticks and my fingers naturally rest on the shoulder buttons. The grips on the back fit perfectly in my hands, enhancing the comfortability of the controller.
Overall, I love the GamePad. It's comfortable, intuitive, and full of potential. I can't wait to see how it's utilized in future games and I can't imagine a Wii U without the GamePad.
Whoever wrote that article makes me want to cringe. I'm a high school journalist and it is so blatantly obvious that this reporter doesn't know how to research. But this is absolutely hilarious too.
Also, the whole Nintendo Splatoon thing is poorly worded. They make it seem like Splatoon is the name of the console. They should've made it clearer that Splatoon was actually the game.
Lastly, why must there be a winner of E3? Does it really matter? (referring to the " Sony wins" section)
I give him props for being honest, but he should realize that Smash Bros. is not a major system seller. Mario Kart is the major system seller. So far, it's managed to maintain good sales. Only time will tell if those sales will keep up.
I'm trying very hard to keep my expectations low. What I really want to see from this E3 is Yarn Yoshi. Please Nintendo, it's time to show that game off.
Elsewhere in my little dream world that I'm trying not to get my hopes up for, this small list exists: -A new Paper Mario on Wii U...a PROPER Paper Mario. Or, alternatively, TTYD HD -A new Luigi's Mansion on Wii U. And have Next Level Games develop it; they did a fantastic job with Dark Moon -A proper Wii Sports sequel, perhaps? -More HD games from the GameCube or the N64
I know that the Tokyo EAD team is working on the next 3D Mario game already. I feel like it's too soon to show it off, but if they DO choose to show it tomorrow, it better NOT be Galaxy 3 and it better NOT be Sunshine 2. In fact, it shouldn't be a sequel at all — it's due time for a completely original 3D Mario game.
I'm excited! Naturally I'm keeping my expectations low so that I won't be overly disappointed if they don't announce some of the games I want.
What I really want to see from this E3 is Yarn Yoshi. Nintendo keeps listing that game in their quarterly reports and it's still listed to be released this year. I really hope they show it because those 6 seconds of gameplay footage last January showed a lot of potential.
Okay, I seriously love Mario Kart 8 and I love the Mario Kart series. But Super Mario 3D World is still, by far and away, my favorite Wii U game. It is absolute platforming perfection, the levels are bursting with creativity, the power-ups are fantastic, and the game in general is a masterpiece. A perfect 10/10 in my book.
Aww get better Mr. Iwata! But since the digital event is pre-recorded, I wonder if he'll make an appearance in that? If not it's okay - it's better for him to get better than deal with more stress.
@Dark-Luigi I fully blame adding 3DS players to Miiverse for ruining it. Before when it was just the Wii U players, there was constructive and thoughtful posts. Now it's just whining and complaining and incomprehensible posts. Please fix this Nintendo, I used to use Miiverse a lot!
Guys at least there was a boost in Wii U sales. Sure it wasn't huge like we were expecting but that is due to several reasons: 1) the new tax on video game consoles in Japan and 2) Japanese gamers aren't all that interested in console gaming! It'll be more interesting to see how the game boosted hardware sales in western markets, since Japan only accounted for 25% of the total game copies sold this past weekend.
@Vrael The Wii U is already on the path to success. Mario Kart sold 1.2 million copies in three days and is the fastest selling Wii U game to date. They just need to keep that momentum.
@MrGawain They can definitely take advantage of the Sony and Microsoft delays, especially since the Mario Kart 8 launch was wildly successful and the Wii U is receiving a healthy sales bump at the moment. If they ride into E3 on the current rise in Wii U sales and make some huge announcements, they have the potential to steal the show.
Nintendo, I just hope you go into this with your heads held high and with confidence. It's been proven this past weekend that Mario Kart 8 is the system seller you needed and you've been snagging headlines with it. Walk into E3 with that "you should've never doubted us" attitude you had when you announced that MK8 sold 1.2 million copies in three days. Have confidence, and show everyone that Nintendo is still relevant to the people that have long abandoned you.
I actually really love this update and it does make the whole OS feel a lot faster. The quick start menu is ingenious and the Wii U honestly should've launched with the feature. As another minor update, I love how the notifications app is now a multitasking app. It makes loading and closing it a lot quicker. Essentially, I'm happy with the update!
@darthmawl Well, Mario Kart is arguably the best selling series out of all of those games you listed. Mario Kart has always been one of Nintendo's biggest sellers - it's usually the second or third best-selling game on every platform it's been released on.
But, this is amazing news! I wish there were some hard numbers. Can't wait to hear reports from the Japan launch (since those provide numbers) and the North American launch.
I actually like my black Wii U. It fits in with the rest of my entertainment system. The white Wii we had before we upgraded stood out too much. Kinda sad they discontinued the black models in Japan.
@BigH88 Now don't be so sure...the first week after 3D World launched gave us underwhelming numbers, but it eventually climbed upwards and there was one week where the Wii U sold over 100,000 units in one week. Also remember that next week's numbers will only show two or three days after the Mario Kart 8 launch. So don't be too shocked if the numbers aren't as high as you're expecting them to be.
Naturally, they're not coming to Hawaii. Again. Seriously, there's a Best Buy on the island and I know exactly where it's at. It's kind of annoying, Nintendo. I sure as heck am NOT buying a plane ticket to fly to the mainland just to play Smash. Bring it here, and then maybe I'll participate.
There really isn't that much of a difference between 720p and 1080p. Really, there isn't. It's HD, and it still looks beautiful. And who cares if the game is 60fps or 59fps? Nintendo is the only company that consistently hits the 60fps mark, which is quite an accomplishment.
Taking away the GamePad will destroy the Wii U...at that point it will literally just be Wii HD. I personally love the GamePad and I'm still looking forward to the game in which the GamePad shines.
Ok, I read the complaint and the second patent was completely BS. The patent was issued in September of 2013, ONE YEAR after the Wii U launched. And it claimed that Nintendo was notified of the "infringement" today. So doesn't this mean that Phillips is actually infringing on Nintendo?
Nuh-uh, Nintendo BETTER win this. If the Wii U gets banned in the U.S. I will be so freaking mad. It doesn't help that the Wii U is already struggling over here and if this falls through, it truly will be the end of the Wii U because the U.S. is a MAJOR market and Nintendo can't afford to lose it.
I'm not too worried though, Nintendo typically wins these things but still...
It's nice to see 3D World in the top 20! Kind of random given that it dropped out of the top 20 about four or five months ago but hey, at least it made an appearance this week!
@Diddy_kong Even back then they still redefined the video game industry. With the SNES, they introduced the diamond pattern of buttons. With the N64, they introduced the 360 analog control stick. Nintendo is always redefining their controllers.
It's annoying that some people think this announcement signals the end of the Wii U. It doesn't. In all honesty, the Wii U entered development in 2007 (one year after the Wii launched) and wasn't released until 2012. It will be a while yet before we see Nintendo's next home console.
I honestly think that 3.6 million is a realistic estimate. They learned from last year so I think that being conservative is a much better option. This doesn't mean that the Wii U is a bad system though. It's a great console and it's unfortunately extremely underrated, partially because all of the fanboys claiming how "weak" the hardware is. It may never achieve amazing sales, but that doesn't change the fact that the Wii U is a great system.
@Lunapplebloom Yeah it really ticked me off last year when they didn't come to Hawaii for the E3 demos. Honestly, there's a Best Buy in Pearl City! And there are plenty of GameStop locations around the island and I honestly think there's one where I live. Kind of annoying that they leave Hawaii out but oh well.

Well he did say "I hope you understand" which is close enough.
Re: Satoru Iwata Recovering From Surgery To Remove Growth, Will Miss Nintendo's AGM
