Re: Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Tops Rolling Stone's 50 Best Games Of All Time

WaffleRaptor01

@Urso I never heard of anyone complaining it didn't do anything new. The complaints I did hear is story wise it's the weakest of all titles. To be fair Zelda was always light on story, but the problem lies with open world games in general. By giving player total freedom it disrupts the flow of story and makes the urgency that less important.

That is why linear games will always succeed into telling a better story.

See Breath of the Wild has two problems here. It wants the emotional impact, but at the same let players do what they wish. One of these must be sacrificed for the other. It's trying to have it's cake and eat it too.

It's really hard to care about Zelda and the fate of Hyrule when you can goof off for 100 hours. It's quite easy to forget there's even a plot story there simply because of that total freedom.

To me, the best story is the one that happens prior to Link awakening. Like, the past is more interesting than the present. Simply because the present's story is fragmented and scattered due to the open world.

Re: Sonic's Live-Action Movies Have Apparently Surpassed $1 Billion At The Box Office

WaffleRaptor01

@MeloMan Mario has been global icon for decades. He's basically the Mickey Mouse of games due to Nintendo successfully marketing the character to general audiences of all ages.

There are more people who don't even play videogames that know Mario than Sonic. It's not a surprise like at all, his first movie would do gangbusters at the box office.

Disney even on their worst day, would do way more than any other animation studio by brand recognition alone. It wouldn't matter if the Mario was a great film, a mediocre film, or a downright bad one. Nintendo is king of the family game market so a Mario film regardless of it's quality was going to be a huge success.

Sonic on the hand doesn't have that wide of grasp on the family market. Sega's demographic never exclusively focused on family/ kids. Sonic game's were always focused more on a 10+ market and by being multiple platform, the franchise doesn't have a home console where it can be marketed aggressively to a demographic.

Sonic not making a billion dollars in one go was always a long shot regardless. But the fact the franchise as a whole did well at the box office is a success on it's own, and there really no need to bring Mario in this.

On a final note, Mario and Sonic stop competing decades ago. It's funny how gamers keep pitting these two against eachother.

Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For The Plucky Squire

WaffleRaptor01

@MatoFilipovic It was never meant to be a take. Admittedly, I should have tweaked it more, but honestly I was just having a bit of go with every indie game under the sun somehow being linked to Nintendo. Anyways, a bad joke is a bad joke. So, I'll the L on this one.

Re: Penny's Big Breakaway Dev Downsizes Due To "Volatile Market Conditions"

WaffleRaptor01

@Poco_Lypso What I learned from Myth Wukong is controversy sales. All you have to do is let the consumers create an imaginary supervillain, ride that train until release date, generate massive sales, and any nuance honest criticism will be met with swift condemnation. Just as long as you're "winning" against the "bad" guy that's all that matters.

Re: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Almost Had A Different Name

WaffleRaptor01

@NIN10DOXD I actually like the name "Breath Of the Wild" more than ToTK personally. However I just didn't like the story of BOTW or ToTK.

It's a take, but im taking it. I'm just personally not invested in Ganondorf as a villain. I get he is a series staple, but I feel like his story was wrapped up wonderfully in Wind Waker.

Then they bring him back in in Twilight Princess which undercuts what could have been an interesting villain Zant, and then bring him back a boring mindless beast in BOTW. Next comes ToTK and despite being the central antagonist (again) the writing is just meh.

Breath of Wild the title sounds fun, and when you remove the whole Ganon is back thing again, it can be viewed has a Link living in this vast strange world going on a grand adventure of self discovery.

The outline was there, and there just so much potential for a fresh start villain wise, but the insistence on Ganon/Ganondorf just brings it down a tad bit.

Im not trying to knock down Ganondorf as a villain. I just wanna see a major mainline Zelda game with a entirely new bad guy.

Re: Back Page: Dark World, Lorule, Termina - A Voyage Home To Hyrule Via Zelda's 'Other' Worlds

WaffleRaptor01

@Axecon My only nitpick is the time travel aspect. Time Travel is such a finicky thing in any media. From a game mechanic standpoint it's fun. From a plot point, it contradicts itself.

The idea that certain things remain changed despite technically speaking everything should revert to how it was is just a bit humorous. Alas, some caveats had to be made for the story to progress.

Re: Random: Sakurai Used To Invite Devs' Children To Play Test Upcoming Games

WaffleRaptor01

@LadyCharlie “Unfortunately, the movie scenes we worked hard to create were uploaded onto the internet. You can only truly wow a player the first time he sees [a cutscene]. I felt if players saw the cutscenes outside of the game, they would no longer serve as rewards for playing the game, so I’ve decided against having them.” ~ Sakurai.

There's your answer.

Re: Bayonetta Star Jennifer Hale On The SAG-AFTRA Strikes: "AI Is Coming For Us All"

WaffleRaptor01

@Pillowpants It's very eerie and unsettling what the power of technology can do to those who wield it wrongly. In this case what AI can do if it is allowed to be wield freely without any regulations.

One problem we have here in the USA is that our officials come from an era where things like A.I. is a foreign concept. They are so far behind whats going in the tech world, that it's a headache explaining how things work on even a basic level.

Re: Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Movie Trailer Finally Reveals Keanu Reeves' Shadow

WaffleRaptor01

@Coolmusic I'm interested but not excited about Keanu. I have no hate towards the guy, but it's clear he wasn't chosen for his acting skills. There's celebrities out there who are very good at voice acting. I would rather have them if I can't have an experienced voice actor.

Keanu is at his best as an action star. It's not a sleight against him, but he has no range or versatility. Not every actor is fit for every role.

Re: 'The Knightling' Takes Inspiration From 3D Zelda In A Promising Debut Trailer

WaffleRaptor01

@Shadowkiller97 @ScalenePowers @AJWolfTill, I mean Botw and ToTk are circling back to the original formula set by the first Zelda game.

If you were born before the 3d era or atleast played the orignal famicom series, player freedom was something Miyamoto envisioned.

Exploration and progression at the players place instead of a strict linear structure was Miyamoto ahead of his time rather it unbeknownst to him. He manged to mix traditional dungeon design with a non linear over-world map.

In many ways Zelda NES is a combination of OoT and BOTW. It has the strength of exploration seen in latter, and traditional design that was featured in the former.

Every franchise reaches a point where innovation must introduced to keep a formula from reaching the stage of regression. BoTW isn't perfect, but it's a stepping stone into progression.

Skyward Sword is what I would argue the tipping point that made Nintendo realize they were heading into stagnation and regression. Skyward Sword is good example of game that was too strict in it's design. At total opposites of the ideas set forth by it's predecessors.

But if we do a deep dive, Zelda was stumbling right after Majora's Mask. We have Wind Waker, a game the devs were passionate about, but didn't translate well with fans, and then Twilight Princess, something the devs weren't passionate about, but became the best selling Zelda title before BoTW.

WW, TP, and SW were Zelda going through an identity crisis. A battle between the devs vision and fans vision for the franchise.

BotW is the response of trying to figure out what made Zelda, Zelda in the first place. It's a game that understood a younger Miyamoto's vision of what he wanted Zelda to be at the time.

Re: Video: Sakurai Explains The Need For Online Updates And Patches

WaffleRaptor01

I'm all for patches when necessary. Back in the day, if a game was bugged, all one could do was wait for a re-release with the bugs patched more or less.

However, doesn't excuse how patch happy games have become. Releasing games in a very poor state, leaving frustrated buyers having to wait for weeks to months for games to be in a half polished state.

Re: Review: Perfect Dark (Nintendo 64) - Perhaps Not Perfect, But Still A Remarkable Achievement

WaffleRaptor01

@JohnnyMind You just haven't the right game that gels with you. I'm not in the camp that will tell you "Maybe x is just not for and that's okay".

I find such comments weirdly condescending in some small way. Instead, I'd like give some perspective from a guy that never liked JRPG's.

JRPG's were the one of the genres I always found the hardest to get into, or even understand. However through trial and error, I did find some I enjoyed. While I'm not overly in love with the genre, there are aspects I can appreciate, and those few JRPG's I've played were some of the best times I've had.

I suggest you just keep trying. Even if the majority of FPS's you play don't click, there is bound to be one that does. And for you it will be a unique experience.

Even if you don't fully dive into FPS's, you can find a game or two worth replaying through the years. That will be your little gem(s).

Re: Random: Welp, Now Nintendo's Going After Sheet Music

WaffleRaptor01

@RygelXVIII Well, Ill agree with one thing you said, and that's jumping on the bandwagon.

Now that our lives are tethered to being continuously online all day, It's far too easy to let our emotions do the thinking. Jumping to extreme conclusions, filling in blank spaces with our "facts" before all evidence is presented.

In some ways the net has become the modern day witch hunters. Abandoning any logic and reason. Instead choosing run on pure adrenaline.

A favorite videogame character of mine said this "People are quick to speak, but slow to correct themselves" and I see it everyday online. Even here on this site.

People are quick to share an opinion and when shown incorrect, will either argue into the ground why they are "correct", or just outright never respond, and continue the same pattern.

We are losing the ability to think rationally, and instead are thinking emotionally. Siding with those who reaffirm our biases rather than challenge them. Out casting those who dare ask questions.

Re: Sonic X Shadow Generations: Dark Beginnings Animated Short Announced

WaffleRaptor01

@Samalik That's fine. I was more so referring to SA2 than SA1. I should've been more clear in my distinction.

SA1 had the benefit of atleast mixing up the gameplay of each character. SA2 on the other hand made each character mechanically the same. When you choose to play the dark side, you were just doing an entire mirror run of light side.

I just think outside of Sonic and Shadow the other characters were just not that interesting to play as.

Re: Zelda Live-Action Movie Director Promises To Be "Ambitious"

WaffleRaptor01

@ItsOKToBeOK The world of Zelda is indeed big, but doesn't really have all that much depth. It's quite a blank slate.

Alot of the blank gaps are just things fans and non-canon media filled up over the years. This is due to structure of Zelda games and Nintendos focus on interesting gameplay mechanics than actual deep story telling.

A tv show might have the edge in fleshing out everything due to it's medium, however because Zelda is light on plot and characters, this gives enough room for a movie to fill in gaps as well.

Re: Lara Croft's Pinup Posters Go Missing In Tomb Raider I-III Remastered

WaffleRaptor01

@brandonbwii I'm the same way sorta. But for me it's different. I don't care if you want a sexualized female in your game, but I do question does such sexuality help to serve the narrative or is just distraction.

If' it's the latter, then I personally skip it. Not out of prudishness, but because I find it comical more than anything.

It's the same type of feeling I had with Nier games. You're asking me to look for this deep story with a half naked Android who's butt is on display for no real reason whatever.

I laughed during my play though of the game alot.

Same feeling im getting with upcoming Stellar Blade.

Like, I can get behind a philosophy when a game is being ridiculous on purpose. Just not when it's being somewhat serious with ridiculous looking females.

At the end of the day if it's eye candy, fine. Just not for me. I think you can create a interesting sexy female character without oversexualizing them. But that's just my weird view on it.
