Re: The Switch eShop Is Buckling Under The Weight Of Silksong

I agree, by all accounts it seems to be a straight sequel to a very good if pretty ordinary (imo) metroidvania. personally I bought HK but I didn't love anything about it and put it down not long after.

I like the genre fine but it's hard to imagine a metroidvania that I'd be champing at the bit to play, to be honest.

Re: Final Fantasy Tactics' Devs Had To Lean On Fans To Recover Original Source Code

The_Nintendo_Expat

they seriously didn't simply make a copy of the complete source code?

why is it that only "pirates" and "hackers" actually give a ***** about any of this?

PS - I'm still thinking about the fact that they finished their game without bothering to save the source code, then proceeded to modify the source code many times without making backup copies, working copies, etc etc. these were not unheard of concepts, and they had tons of work in this data, lots of money on the line, and were a company that had already been around for at least two or three generations.

"People who vote on nostalgia shouldn't have their vote counted, it's about the best looking cover, not your feelings."

I was getting ready to heartily rebuke this, but then I realized I totally agree ๐Ÿ˜‚ I try to put my personal nostalgia on the shelf and focus on which artwork I think is the best, using other parameters.

the only proactive way I can imagine to correct this (at least hopefully/maybe) is to expand the poll into two questions:

which artwork (if any) gives you the most nostalgic feelings?

which artwork do you think is the best or most effective? (comment why below!)

or similar. curious to hear what you think. โœŒ๏ธ

EDIT - one of the answers to the first question would be "I have no nostalgic feelings for this game"

thanks! I can't say that is communicated well in the composition. I can think of three ways off the top of my head that it could have possibly been. โœŒ๏ธ not trying to be overly critical, but considering the heaps of praise this series continuously gets, I don't feel too awful about it ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ‘

EDIT - I can see now that it actually IS attached to what i gather is a "needle weapon," being held at an odd angle by what I can assume is an arm. Perhaps they just threw it and it kind of went all over and now it has just been caught. ๐Ÿ‘

as a frame of animation it would probably work better in context, I'll assume that's what this is. โœŒ๏ธ

anyway thanks for indulging your local Pedant.

What have you got for us, Johnson?

Well sir, I've drawn every character exploding from the exact center of the page, detached from the context of their surroundings.

Honestly, Johnson, every Japanese game has had the exact same idea for years...

โ€”But, sir! This time they are framed in a big horseshoe!

Johnson you sonofabitch... you've done it again! PRINT!

@Misima

it's a cliche at this point, but having felt exactly like you do (except that 20 years ago when Sony had exclusives, I also loved their Dualshock controllers) up until the last couple years, I'm not going to migrate to Steamdeck, use whatever controllers I want, play all my old games on there, and wait and see if there is ever a Nintendo exclusive I want badly enough to spend 500 dollars. โœŒ๏ธ

@nhSnork

I love those games! and they simply wouldn't be the same or arguably even work without "tank controls," especially in a pre-analog stick world.

I'm assuming that at least some of the confusion is pressing "up" to go "forward," because a) there's up/forward confusion generally (e.g. "non inverted" people, don't get me started) and b) presumably, the same people can handle playing super sprint or GTA1/2.

but that's a presumption inside of an assumption so YMMV. โœŒ๏ธ

"For example, Iโ€™ve never given Metroid a fair shot (Prime and Dread are both on my switch with less then an hour of playtime). Iโ€™ve always struggled with metroidvaniaโ€™s and FPS games,"

I don't generally like FPS games either, but I think if you play with "classic" controls and think of it more like Ocarina (read: "z targeting") but in first person you'll have a better time. I certainly did. this game is worth your time for the vibes alone. VERY immersive. โœŒ๏ธ๐Ÿ‘

(fwiw I didn't like Dread but Super, Fusion, and Zero Mission are top shelf imo)

"it is not an insult, just an observation based on your words on how games were in the past"

ah, whoops! I meant my reply as a joke, albeit a kind of folksy, Okie one that doesn't really make sense when you try to explain it ๐Ÿ˜…โœŒ๏ธ

I'm proudly old school! I certainly prefer the way games used to be, the new games that I do like tend to be evolutions of the old ways, rather than the new kinds of games that have gotten popular, and I liked the industry itself more in the old Sega Nintendo Sony paradigm (that I deeply wish we got more time with ๐Ÿ˜ข)

anyway, aren't you glad you asked! ๐Ÿ˜‚โœŒ๏ธ

I can see where you are coming from. I know my view of "old Nintendo" is rosy, but OTOH I truly believe they were the best single thing to ever happen to videogames, and stayed that way for a long time, but now I feel much less so. ๐Ÿ˜•

I believe that Nintendo has every opportunity to blow minds again (or, my mind, and others who feel the way I do) but it's going to take hardware innovation and some risktaking, two things that I don't believe they are even interested in pursuing any longer. it's a different company. I'm just here to kind of watch the saga as it unfolds (and talk to people, and appreciate old games, and watch for the rare interesting Nintendo game that occasionally comes along๐Ÿ‘)

EDIT - you know what? I think I loved Nintendo so much in the 64 + cube era because PlayStation was SO strong in those days, PSX and then PS2 obv, and Nintendo was like this odd ball "pure" games company who was always doing something interesting in the margins. they were the perfect counterpoint to Sony in those days. I proudly owned both companies' consoles, and they offered something completely different, even in their third party catalogues.

now, I have ZERO love for PlayStation, I had a PS3 that I sort of liked, and it died a premature weird death, and I just never cared for PlayStation ever again. I became a Nintendo devotee during the Wii era, c.2008.

as much as I appear to have "fallen out of love" with Nintendo, it's nothing compared to my shift in feelings towards PlayStation. Idk if this clears anything up or is interesting to learn or anything, but there it is โœŒ๏ธ
