ICEknight: At this moment nothing indicates that an AMIGA emulator is on its way. I´m happy with any good C64 / AMIGA game released on the C64 VC. AMIGA is a beautiful dream, but still not reality.
Yeah, I too think this is the best one. Sonic is the best plattformgame for MS in my opinion, but Alex Kid is not without merits. Good colors, motorcycle and paper-scissors-stone bosses. Level- and enemy design is up and down, but over all kind of nice.
Heh, it´s not that I´m disappointed over VC releases of the MD versions. I´m just not very interested in any Interplay games at all, and should I get one I´d go for the nicest looking version. Since I´m afraid of running out of space on my Wii I would probably not even download a SNES version. So don´t mind my oppinion.
I´ve been thinking about getting Clayfighter just because of the graphics, but I´d rather get a used SNES cart than the MD version. Might be prejudice, but fewer colors avaliable...
Objection_Blaster: If you can live with NES graphics, River City is a whole lot more fun than most modern games. It´s a bizarre combination of cute characters, simple but varied violence, improving abilities & gaining special moves by shopping magazines & candy, and finally co-op. The game is fairly tough but if you buy the right stuff it can be finished in 1-2 hours. That´s pretty good for a brawler anyway.
When it comes to Double Dragon, I´ve had a hard time finding out which verson to buy. The NES version is said to play well, but looks nothing like the arcade and lacks 2 player. The Megadrive version looks excellent but I´ve read that hit detection is real bad. Master System checks in somewere in between with good graphics, 2 player and pretty loose controls. I love DD2 for NES, so I´d like to get part 1 someday.
Khao, there isn´t much of a storyline in Turrican so play them in any order you like. The Machine invades planet - some guy/guys in Turrican armor comes to the rescue. Mega Turrican MAY be after AMIGA´s Turrican I&II, but Super Turrican could be anywhere in the story. I have a feeling Super Turrican is a bit of a remix of Turrican II since some bosses return. I suggest playing Super Turrican first because many like it better.
Good news, although I will be pretty restrictive when it comes to WiiWare... I fear my harddrive could be filled pretty fast. But as stated before, Shantea will be a must-buy.
That´s nice, but I still prefer my original SNES controller with retroport adaptor. http://www.retrousb.com/index.php?productID=122 That way I don´t need the Wiimote dangling from the SNES controller. In my opinion Wires>Wireless, but that´s because I´m a nut.
This game is totally BIONIC! For me Callifonia Games is the only multi-sportgame that can compete with Track and Field II. Even if there are "only" 6 sports they play very differently, and I guess everyone has their favourites. Foot Bag is hillarous and stupid, that´s why I love it. Flying Disk is another great game, It´s fun to try catching the frisbie you just threw with another character. The C-64 version also has a few more eastereggs than the Master System version (But i won´t spoil them!). Callifonia Games is very enjoyable when competing against some friends, and I´d reccomend it to anyone who likes sports- or minigames. This is my favourite Epyx game, but I´ve only played World Games other than this.
brooks83, you´re right! With Sunsofts Super Fantasy Zone on it´s way chances for Waku Waku 7 may not be zero after all! Really, I think I´ll keep 300 blocks free forever just in case ^^
TheLuigiDude, about famous SNK series: I think we will get a few of them from time to time. The Metal Slug Anthology obviously didn´t stop them from releasing Metal Slug on VC in Japan. Perhaps it´s something they do when the sales on the collections go down or get out of print. Anyway, I still have some hopes for fine Neo Geo games.
I´ve only played C64 with a childhood friend. Few games worked, but at least I got a taste for Califonia Games and Impossible Mission! Games I´d like to see are the Turrican games and Last Ninja. I rather liked the music of C64 Ghosts ´n Goblins, so for nostalgia I´d like that one... although controls are terrible and the game is friggin´ impossible.
Giana Sisters would be the most earthshattering release since Nintendo became Sonics new homeground ^^
Slangman, it´s this "ages ago" that makes me worried. Samurai Shodown should be here by now... feels like someone changet their minds. Hopefully I´m wrong!
I too would rejoice over Waku Waku 7! But I can´t remember seing any Sunsoft games on VC at all, so I´m not holding my breath.
Fantasy Zone is fantastic. The most amusing of all master System shooters, and totally insane. Some enemies are cute, while some are just plain creepy. Boss design is gorgeous. Master System usually has terrible music, and I guess Fantasy Zone has pretty bad music too. Still, it´s very sick and jolly so it fits the game perfectly. I actually rate this game as #86 on my personal "best games ever" list^^
Now THIS is what Virtual Console fridays should be like^^
Three terrific games and one good plattformer! Very nice indeed. Fantasy Zone is one of the best MS games ever, Impossible Mission is dead hard but could be THE best C-64 game, and Califonia Games is way better than almost every minigame collection that´s been thrown at us! Wonderboy is probably the best Mario-style plattformer for MS, but there are better ones for SNES, MD and the rest.
Hey, this is GOOD news! I´d almost given up hope on seing more Neo Geo games! I´ll probably get Art of Fighting 2 (skipped the first since it´s too few playable characters) and perhaps all three if they make it here!
And hopefully they´ll release Samurai Shodown it here too one day ^^
http://www.homestarrunner.com/sbemail94.html So... eh we are waiting for the rhino-feedinggame with snakes to be released in episodes? Great times ahead! Anyway, I expect the official announcement of the Angry Videogame Nerd game any day now.
I´m rooting for Earthbound as well. I´ve only played Earthbound Zero, but I liked what I saw.
When it comes to genre definitions, it´s rather pointless. You could say "Zelda is not an adventure game, Kings Quest is an adventure game" because that´s what point and click were called way back. There is a greyzone between textbased RPG.s and actionoriented. I find little reason to exclude a good game from a personal favourites list just because of vague genre definitions.
And thanks for mentioning Legacy of the Wizard, that´s an RPG I´ve never heared of.
Snatcher is the one reason I wish I had a Mega CD... I´ve played it some on MSX emulator, and it´s more hard boiled than any other title out there! But since three or less games are released per week, I´d rather see more Neo Geo titles before a Mega CD emulation.
PC-engine or Famicom Gradius II? Since the Famicom version is very nice I´d be happy for either release. I suppose the CD version is more luxerous, so maybe it would be the best choice for VC.
And yes Scarecrow, the levels are ridicolously hard, much tougher than Life Force (I haven´t beaten the Lv2 boss on Life Force though...) Still a fun game.
Cult classics like Cho Aniki is one of the main reasons I´m excited about VC! I don´t care about the Zelda and Sonic games, they are quite easy to find anyway. But strange and even rare Japan imports is another deal! I´d be very happy if these games ever made it to EU. I have a Famicom cart of Gradius II, but it don´t work... Even if Turbo´s Gradius II is another game, it looks splendid.
RETROPORT: a little hands on @Charco @Damo Yes, the Retroport is pretty nice, but unfortunatly you can´t plug in both a NES and SNES pad to it, you have to buy two different versions. Since they are a bit expensive (22 dollars) I skipped the NES and bought two SNES-Retroports.
I find the SNES controller to be the best for 2D games ever, so I have no problem playing NES and NEO GEO games with it.
However, the buttonlayout is not optimal when it comes to Genesis/Megadrive games. I´m not sure if the classic controller has the same problem, but the confortable Y button is not used. Instead, A represents the 2, "shooting-button", which is pretty awkward. Some games can be remapped under options, but using X & A for shooting/ jumping is the closest you come for a substitute.
Since the adaptor is plugged into the GC port, it´s rumored that it works with Gamecube games as well. That´s only part true. One-button games like Sonic (on the compilation disc) work fine, but when playing more complex games, you notice most buttons are missing: it´doesn´t work.
This being said, Retroport works perfectly with every other system so far, Turbo Graf-X included. I recommend it if you have a SNES controller laying about. It can be ordered from http://www.retrousb.com/index.php
Hard to wish for just five, and since I´m not living in US the results won´t make much difference anyway... but perhaps a US release betters the odds for europe too.
EarthBound Super Mario RPG Y´s book 1&2 Seiken Densetsu 3 Samurai Shodown
Actually I think a constantly starving hero is rather classy. This game is pretty weird too with the politically incorrect "Coalkids". They are replaced with ballerina pigs in Adventure Island.
Feels kind of weired with a new Alien Crush, but it sounds amusing. Star Soldier R is what I look forward to. Apparently VC-focus gives new life to old franchises, let´s hope for new Wonderboy, Shining Force and Fantasy Zone games! And a new WiiWare Kid Icarus
Wonderboy is indeed better than Adventure Island. The graphics are colorfull, bonus stages are enjoyable, and continues make it less frustrating. I like the music a little better in Adventure Island though, but it´s probably because I played it first.
400 points is fair compared to other prices. Hopefully some rarer titles will appear. Fantasy Zone is a personal favourite, highly recomended to fans of psyched-out humor shooters.
He he, judging from the trend of releasing really old and unpopular games, Stuffgamer1 may be right... If you US gamers don´t buy this, Square-Enix will never release our precious Mario RPGs and Chrono Triggers...
Mega Turrican... I´ve never played it, but it could be a pretty cool game. Many fans rate Turrican II over Turrican III, but since Turrican II is one of the best platform shooters ever, I should give Mega Turrican/Turrican III a chance one day. Does anyone know if the music sounds as good on SEGA as it does on AMIGA?
retrospekt_au: I experienced the same thing with Mario 64 and Galaxy. Though it was groundbreaking, Mario 64 isn´t quite as fun as the 2D games. I think Nintendo pushed themselves to be more creative and playful with Galaxy and came closer to the ultimate Mario experience: Super Mario World..
It looks like nostalgia sells on VC. People buy back the games they used to play... Most of them are great games, mind. It´s no surprise lesser known quality titles didn´t make the list.
Since the actual number of downloads isn´t published, it´s hard to judge if non-Nintendo titles sell bad or just "good but not great". I hope it don´t keep third-party companys from bringing their games to VC anyway. "Odd" games are always welcome in my opinion.

Yeah, new RPG. I have it on GBA and PS2 though. Nebulus could be fun, good to hear new titles will keep coming for C64 too.

Turrican 2 --> C64
Ooh, I SHOULD have voted for that one too! I love the AMIGA version, and playing C64 Turrican on Virtual Console would be amazing...
Come to think of it, why aren´t Golden Axe Warrior and Ninja Gaiden for MS on my list? Oh well... how far can you go with 5 titles =S

EarthBound

Samurai Shodown

I´d buy Metal Slug as well. No loading times and a better controller (SNES+retroport adapter) will be nice if Metal Slug comes to european VC.

GACK! Rondo of Blood!!!? Thought it´d never come, considering the PSP remake. Still too early to be sure of a Europe/US release but...
