Re: Nintendo NX Will Be About Creating "Fun New Ways To Play"

Shadowkiller97

@earthboundlink I wish there was a way to like posts... I agree with you 100%. It's not Nintendo, its Sony/MSFT who are the problem. They haven't changed their controller for 3 generations and now people believe it should never change... I like that Nintendo tries something new every single time. If no one ever tries anything new, how are things to improve? If 10 years ago, you told me that everyone would have phones in their pockets that had no buttons at all, I would have a hard time believing you. I applaud companies who are willing to try new things. I for one do not want Nintendo to make a "normal" controller as their main.

Re: Reggie Fils-Aime Highlights Nintendo's Strength in Franchises, and Goal for Wii U to "Stand Up To Time"

Shadowkiller97

@Quorthon I concede the fact that Nintendo marketed it as revolutionary. But I disagree on the point that simply because it is not revolutionary, it should be scrapped and abandoned.

The point of the anecdote was to counter your generalization that "everyone" hates using the gamepad from the comments of anonymous people on the internet who like to whine, the vocal minority.

Those are not FACT, they are OPINIONS. The gamepad failed to live up to its potential, for you. It does not justify the price tag, for you. It does not change anything for the better, for you. For me, it does all of those things. Maybe it is because I am used to multi-tasking? I work in a paperless office and have 4 screens on my desk. Six if you add phones.

The only game off the top of my head that does not have Pro Controller support is Captain Toad. I looked through 2-3 days of posts, and found not one on Miiverse asking for Pro Controller support. Can you share some of these posts on games that I am completely missing? The only reason I can think of for someone to want Pro Controller over the gamepad is battery life, but that's not really an issue for me (my home has a power outlet near my couch).

Lastly, I appreciate how my personal anecdote is non-evidence for you, yet that is all you use to back up your claims. Personal anecdotes of whiners over the internet. I do find it strange that you can have a personal experience of how most people would prefer to push a button...

Re: Reggie Fils-Aime Highlights Nintendo's Strength in Franchises, and Goal for Wii U to "Stand Up To Time"

Shadowkiller97

@Quorthon "even most Nintendo fans don't seem to like using it"

You mean the vocal minority? I, for one, could not imagine life without the gamepad! It has allowed me to game far more than ever before on a console. Yes, for the majority of the main game, I play on the TV... but the gamepad-only mode has me coming back to games while I am doing other things. I will have a race or two on MK8 while watching TV or go back and collect some Riddler trophies or do side quests in Arkham City. I have probably played more Hyrule Warriors on the gamepad than on the TV.

Beyond just off-TV, I personally love the maps. My favorite genre is action-adventure. Glancing down to quickly get your bearings is 1000 times better than constantly pausing the screen. When I went back to play Arkham Asylum or Infamous on the PS3, I kept looking down at the dualshock 3 to no avail.

I don't understand why the gamepad has to be revolutionary? Why cant it just take normal things and make them more convenient and intuitive, like maps and inventory? For me, those two things are more than good enough. And most games do that well (except for SSBU, why cant I use the touch screen Sakurai!!?!). As for it being a requirement for games, that's quite untrue too. DKCTF proved that the gamepad does not have to be utilized, and the gamepad has the same inputs as any "normal" controller. So the excuse that the controller is too different for developers to develop for is hogwash.

Re: Review: Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. (3DS)

Shadowkiller97

I was completely uninterested in this title. I paid zero attention during the E3 reveal and the E3 treehouse coverage. My eyes glazed over during the ND as well. But I downloaded the demo, because why not? And I had way more fun than I expected. I definitely want to get this now! Probably not day 1 because I just got into MH4U and don't think I have time for this yet, but soon!

Re: GameStop Lists Crazy Majora's Mask New Nintendo 3DS XL 'Massive Bundle' for $500, Sells Out Almost Instantly

Shadowkiller97

@Chicagoway Haha, no, I am not a GS employee, nor do I have any love for them. Heck, I can't even remember the last time I bought anything from them.

My only point was that of all the shady things GameStop pulls... this is hardly one of them. Bundles have been around since as long as I can remember. Limited items will be bundled with other things at retail price. Overstocked items will be bundled at a discount. And it isn't just GameStop... every retailer tends to do this.

Re: GameStop Lists Crazy Majora's Mask New Nintendo 3DS XL 'Massive Bundle' for $500, Sells Out Almost Instantly

Shadowkiller97

@Chicagoway Like I mentioned before, they did offer the MM N3DS at retail price alone. No one is forcing you to buy the bundle, there are plenty of N3DS systems out there without the additional items. Regardless, this bundle sold out instantly, so clearly they only had a few systems (probably from returns or expired pre-orders). Seeing as how the system by itself sells for far more than MSRP anywhere else it's available (read eBay), this is far from them being sleazy.

Mario Galaxy had a re-print in the Nintendo Selects line and is not available on the eShop. And sitting on store shelves is different from still being in print. It was also a new game, vs OoT which is a remake. Furthermore, the only reason this is getting so much press is because its a Zelda game and collectors have started to panic. As I said, the game is still easily available on the eShop.

Re: GameStop Lists Crazy Majora's Mask New Nintendo 3DS XL 'Massive Bundle' for $500, Sells Out Almost Instantly

Shadowkiller97

@Chicagoway Except it is MSRP as stated by someone else in an earlier post. Therefore, unless you think MSRP is unreasonable, this is totally worth $500.

As for OoT 3D being in demand... It's an almost 4 year old game that is actually a remake of a 16 year old game that has been re-released several times in various generations. I doubt that it really was in demand. Rather, the news of it being discontinued likely had some effect. At some point, everything has to go out of print to make room for the new stuff. Plus, this can still be bought on the eShop.

Re: Poll: Do Video Game Reviews Need To Have A Score?

Shadowkiller97

I think scores are important. Yes, you have the people who start comparing scores or only look at scores or complain about X game getting Y score when Z game got W score... But that's just the vocal minority. The reason they are important is because people have different writing styles. Some people are very blunt and my talk about all the negatives... but when you ask them to give it a score out of they might say 8/10 or 9/10. On the other hand, some people are way more flowery and speak in euphemisms.. but then give it a 6/10 or 7/10. Both individually cannot give an apt picture.

Let's face it, everyone has a score that they mentally give certain games. You might not consciously think about it, but I bet you could easily come up with scores if pressed.

And I would point out that everything gets scored. Movies, books, TV shows, restaurants, events... Imagine if your schoolwork didn't get scored. You would just end up confused about your progress. Just getting a "good job" isn't sufficient because "good job", "good game" means different things to different people. There has to be some level of objectivity.

Re: Nintendo Provides a Handy Quick Guide to Completing a New Nintendo 3DS System Transfer

Shadowkiller97

The basic system transfer simply copied over all the licenses tied to your 3DS. You then need to plug your SD card into the new system ... However if you are using a normal SD card, since this is SD going to micro SD, you need to use the computer to transfer the data.

If you don't want to use a computer, you have two other options. Do a light data transfer that transfers over all saves and additional information. You would then connect to the eShop on your new system and redownload all your games.

The last option is to transfer everything, games and all wirelessly. This is the least recommended option because it takes so long. A user at IGN said his took 13ish hours to transfer a 16gb card. I hate to think what might happen if something gets interrupted in the process.

Re: Talking Point: The New Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo Network and Wii U Could Point the Way for Future Hardware

Shadowkiller97

@Yorumi Maybe I tend to check the map more often than you or I just play more adventure games or something, because I notice a stark difference between pausing the screen and looking down. I tend to check the map a lot, and glancing at the screen in my hands is much faster than pausing. It takes time for games to stop the action, load the map/menu, and resume the action. Furthermore, with the gamepad map, if I am going in the right direction, I keep going while looking at the map. Versus, completely pausing my progress.

HUDs are great, but at the same time the gamepad menus are way better/faster because of the touch screen. (It's not a monumental change but it does make things smoother, easier, more intuitive than using a stick/d-pad to move a cursor). I absolutely hate that the touch screen does nothing in SSB!!! Especially because of the 3DS version, I keep trying to use the menu by touching the icons on the screen to no avail...

Re: Talking Point: The New Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo Network and Wii U Could Point the Way for Future Hardware

Shadowkiller97

@Yorumi I know you said you don't hate the gamepad but feel its underused. Isn't that a bit hypocritical? You don't care for its uses (i.e. maps, menus, keyboards, UI) and want something that utilizes it better. Yet at the same time you hate controllers being "shoehorned" in. It seems like a catch 22. What would you suggest Nintendo do to make it work? Why do small advances like analogue triggers or clickable sticks become innovations yet small advances in dual screen become gimmicky.

For your grievances against motion controls, I would like to point out that Nintendo has listened. They get that motion controls aren't for everyone, which is why the Wii U has standard control options for just about every motion controlled game (except where it wouldn't make sense, Wii Sports Club, Wii Fit U, Wii Party U, etc). But now they get criticized for having too many options.

Re: Talking Point: The New Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo Network and Wii U Could Point the Way for Future Hardware

Shadowkiller97

@Yorumi Touche. I suppose we were really just arguing semantics with "gimmicks."

I think the point is when you say you want Nintendo to release a new console with no "gimmicks," it doesn't necessarily mean the same thing to everyone as it does to you.

Also, without trying new things, how is anyone supposed to figure out what will be a gimmick and what will be innovation. If the analog stick had been canned before release because someone thought it was too gimmicky... I still play some games with the d-pad. If people keep pushing for "traditional" controls, we will never move forward.

Re: Talking Point: The New Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo Network and Wii U Could Point the Way for Future Hardware

Shadowkiller97

@Yorumi "it made games worse overall" is an opinion that not everyone shares. "never adopted as a standard of the industry" is completely untrue. Every smartphone and tablet has a built-in accelerometer and gyroscope. I remember when the gyroscope was added to the iPhone, it was demoed with a game…

As much as console gamers hate to admit it, the industry includes smartphones and tablets now. That is fact. Furthermore, the DualShock 3 has six-axis motion sensing and the DualShock 4 has a gyroscope and accelerometer as well.

Re: Talking Point: The New Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo Network and Wii U Could Point the Way for Future Hardware

Shadowkiller97

@Yorumi I think that’s his point. You are calling the motion controls a gimmick, because you don’t like them. Other people who like the motion controls think it’s innovation. I loved Skyward Sword, Metroid Trilogy, Mario Galaxy and even NSMBW with the Wiimote.

I do think that it needs to be balanced. I.e. in OOT3D, I used the motion controls as often as the circle pad. I switched back and forth between the two seamlessly.

… But then of course you have people complaining about too many control options… I guess you cannot ever win.

Re: Talking Point: The New Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo Network and Wii U Could Point the Way for Future Hardware

Shadowkiller97

@earthboundlink I could not agree more. Most people call the gamepad, second-screen idea a gimmick. I for one could not imagine a successor without it. I do admit that it has been disappointing that a large number of Nintendo games has ignored it, but hopefully that will change in the current line-up. The maps alone is a massive feature in my opinion. Having played Arkham City and Arkham Origins on the Wii U, I dread the day that I play Arkham Knight and have to go back to pausing every 2 minutes to get my bearings.

I, too, loved Skyward Sword for the motion controls. Especially since we never got that awesome light saber Star Wars game we all dreamed up the moment the Wii was announced…

Re: Talking Point: The New Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo Network and Wii U Could Point the Way for Future Hardware

Shadowkiller97

At the same time, Nintendo needs to be wary of streamlining the two platforms too much. It might help with their software droughts, sure, but it could also hurt their sales.

Look at the PS Vita. It is a great system packing a significant amount of power and a great screen. It was marketed as the “Portable Home Console” experience, yet it has largely tanked in sales. As Sony has discovered, not many people want to play home console games on a tiny screen especially when the same game is available for the TV. I am not trying to bash the Vita, but isn't that why most people state that the 3DS is better than the Vita; the unique games? Now we want the 3DS to do the very thing that caused the Vita to "fail."

Furthermore, home console game design and portable game design have separate philosophies. Look at Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon vs the original. The separate mansions and the multiple levels allowed it to be a better portable experience. If you just have time on a bus ride or car ride or when you’re “reading a magazine”, it’s easy to pick up and put down. KH3D did the same thing.

However, that said, there are many folks who don’t have such commuting schedules. I also don’t travel that much either. I play my 3DS mostly at home. So if all the games on my portable were available on my console, I would probably not shell out extra cash for a secondary device just for the few times I would use it outside the home. Especially with off-TV play with the gamepad.

I think the 3DS succeeds because it has that portable experience for people playing on the go, and for people like me who play at home it also has the unique games not available on the Wii U.

Maybe a solution would be to have one device – a portable ~$200 for which you could by an adapter ~$100-150 for the TV. The adapter would upgrade the visuals/shaders/effects, but can only be used if you have the portable console plugged in. Think of the initial SSB trailer where Mario makes the jump from 3DS to Wii U and how his graphical style gets enhanced. The key is that one cannot work without the other. Because if they both work independently with the same games, one is doomed to fail.

TL;DR – Having two separate devices that play the same games seems like a good idea on paper, but could have unforeseen side effects.

Re: Nintendo's amiibo Website and Compatibility Chart Has All The Answers

Shadowkiller97

I like the SSB Amiibo way more than the new ones. The action poses just look cooler even with those stands that are needed. Also, I am kind of just annoyed at the Super Mario Series in general. All of the characters already have SSB versions except for Toad. Makes me think they introduced this line just so they could make Toad for Captain Toad... which is baffling because I would much rather have a single unique Captain Toad Amiibo... I guess my hopes for Yarn-Yoshi-Plushie Amiibo have just been squashed.

Re: Poll: Which New Nintendo 3DS Will You be Buying?

Shadowkiller97

I really want the MH4U bundle and am quite annoyed that it is GameStop Exclusive... I am fully committed to Best Buy's ecosystem... plus I have a BBY credit card I want to put this on.

I settled for the Majora's Mask version, even though I don't care for it too much. Hmm... maybe I can find someone to trade me the MH4U one since the Majora's Mask is more limited and already sold out at GS and BBY.

Re: Nintendo and GungHo Online Entertainment Announce Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition For 3DS

Shadowkiller97

@bouncer0304 Hmm... The Forbes article is referencing a quote from Bill Trinen's interview with Reno Gazette-Journal. In that interview he says "we don't have a new Mario game this year." But according to that article the interview took place in 2014 before the Christmas Holidays. Wouldn’t that mean he was talking about how there was no Mario game in 2014? I see nothing about 2015...

Seems like Forbes reported on an article they didn't even fully read...

Re: Feature: Time to Vote For Your Game of the Year Awards 2014

Shadowkiller97

@Giygas_95 My votes were almost the same as yours, only I picked Hyrule Warriors for Wii U Retail (DKC:TF overall). HW surprised me a lot. I played the heck out of that game constantly since September. I will probably get back to it on the next set of DLC, but am trying to use my Holiday time off from work to catch up on my backlog.

Smash Wii U is great too, but I am kind of burned out on it after having to go through All Star mode with each toon all over again after having done it on the 3DS one already. I was annoyed that I had to unlock all the classic trophies again since I have them on the 3DS already. Same exact trophy, but I have to do a classic mode again that is twice as long as the 3DS one...

Re: Guide: The Best Black Friday Nintendo Deals in the US

Shadowkiller97

@Dipper723 That's not accurate. The Wii U + SM3DW and Nintendo Land costs 299.99. SSB is 59.99 and DKCTF is 49.99. That's only 409.97. Really, the deal is not as spectacular as people seem to think. It is just the Wii U bundle and Smash for retail price with DKCTF for free. Because the ad lists out the bundled games separately, it just seems like a better deal.

Re: NES-Themed Nintendo 3DS XL On The Way as GameStop Exclusive

Shadowkiller97

@JellySplat @jakysnakydx The New 3DS was announced in a Japanese ND for Japan only. The information was released in the west on Nintendo news sites and tech sites, sure, but that's about it. One day of news coverage on specialty sites that was drowned in PAX coverage. There is no information about the New 3DS on the eShop, Nintendo's site, retailers, or anywhere else in the west. Likely, the people who know about the New 3DS, already own a 3DS. I do not really foresee the massive drop in sales everybody is talking about. If most people still do not know that the Wii U is a new system even after all that marketing, I doubt a Japan-only New 3DS will have any impact. Parents are still likely to buy 3DS systems this holiday, especially with Pokémon ORAS and SSB releasing. These special editions just offer more choice for them.

Re: Mario Kart 8 Update, Mercedes Karts and DLC Pre-Orders Now Live

Shadowkiller97

@rjejr December 21st is the Winter Solstice, the day in the year where day is the shortest and night is the longest. Before it, the days gradually get shorter, and after it, the days start getting longer again. Therefore, December 21st is actually midwinter scientifically and is considered so in many cultures. Not sure why so many people consider it to be the start of winter...

Re: Mario Kart 8 DLC Coming In November, Features Zelda, F-Zero And Animal Crossing

Shadowkiller97

@IxC So if they took these two packs and instead released it as Mario Kart 9 on the eShop as a download only game, would that make it better?

Is it really DLC that bothers you or the fact that it is download only? I assume it's the latter because you said that expansion packs sold on discs later on are alright with you. You started by stating that you are bothered because the game is incomplete bit then later on it seems that the download only part is what's bothering you. In that case, are you against any game that is download only? Like indie games, or even some Nintendo published games like Pushmo or the newer Mario vs. Donkey Kong games.

Furthermore, it seems as though your main concern is that people 10 years down the road won't be able to buy it. Why are you so worried about people in the future? Should be have to think about how something will be enjoyed in the future before enjoying it now?

Yes, you can go buy a preowned N64, but I guarantee you won't be able to buy very single game or every single accessory for it. Not unless you pay an arm and a leg to a collector. Heck, I'm sure there are some board games I played when I was young that I couldn't get anywhere today. Things cannot last forever.

But truth be told video games can survive aging better than anyone. If I want to play an old classic NES game, I no longer have to hunt down a used console along with accessories and wires and adapters that are in working condition just to play it. That's where the VC comes into play. It's not perfect but it is better than bargain hunting.

Maybe you should reconsider your outlook. Nothing is forever. Just enjoy it now and move forward with the memory if it doesn't last for 10 years.

Re: Ubisoft Executive Talks Up Super Smash Bros. as a Wii U System Seller

Shadowkiller97

I think that people expecting SSB to do worse than MK8 are making the same mistake that everyone accuses Nintendo of making; comparing Wii U to Wii. Yes, MK Wii sold triple the amount SSBB sold, but that was on the "casual" console. Wii numbers exploded because non-gamers were buying Wiis. To those consumers Mario Kart is more accessible than SSB. However the landscape has vastly changed now. Casuals no longer buy consoles. You need to stop using Wii numbers to prove that MK is bigger than SSB.

So I do think SSB will sell consoles better than MK8. I think even Nintendo is expecting this. They gave SSB the holiday launch. SSB had a Nintendo Direct even before MK8 did. It gets screenshots and
info revealed constantly for over a year. And at E3 and comic-con, there were broadcasted Smash tourneys not MK8.

Re: Nintendo Goes Download-Only With The 2014 Club Nintendo Elite Rewards

Shadowkiller97

@Jazzer94 I think you are misrepresenting the issue. No one is saying that Nintendo is obligated to give customers something awesome. People are merely disappointed in the selection this year based on other rewards Club Nintendo has had in the past. I don't think that is unreasonable or "entitled." If this was the first year for Platinum rewards, not nearly as many people would be disappointed.

Re: Nintendo Goes Download-Only With The 2014 Club Nintendo Elite Rewards

Shadowkiller97

For me the issue is that Club Nintendo is becoming less of a loyalty program and more of a reward for new customers. As many of the others have stated, to reach Platinum status, you have to buy Nintendo games. And the reward is those same games that you already purchased. If you look through the comments, the Gold members really want some of those Platinum choices... and the Platinum people have no need for them because they already bought the games that helped them get to Platinum in the first place.

Club Nintendo has given out some cool stuff this year, but again it was for newer customers as opposed to loyal ones. The MK8 promotion was awesome, but it fell flat for me because I already owned all four of the Nintendo games. I tend to buy Nintendo games day one because they don't normally drop in price until years down the road. Even the Pokémon promotion really only applied to new customers. You had to have purchased a 3DS in that time frame. Having already bought a 3DS and all the games in the promotion list previously did not help at all.

I thought one of the goals that Iwata mentioned in an ND or at one of those Quarterly meetings was trying to create loyalty incentives for people who buy tons of Nintendo games. This seems to be working in the exact opposite way. The more games you have bought, the less you have to choose from for a reward...

I, too, think that having a $10 eShop credit option for Platinum would have gone a long way. To people who claim that it would not work because people could use the credit on 3rd party games, I will point out that eShop credit from DPP can be used on anything. And who is to say it would be used on a 3rd party game?! We are talking about loyal-Platinum Nintendo fans. Most likely it would be used on a discount for a full retail Nintendo game.

I am disappointed, but I guess I will have to accept that Club Nintendo is no longer a loyalty based reward program but more of an incentive to get new customers to buy Nintendo products.

Re: Talking Point: What We Expect From Nintendo at E3 2014

Shadowkiller97

@ClockworkMario You are right. It was revealed in the April direct last year. The real story should have been SM3DW which was announced at E3 and released 5-6 months later. Or even DKC:TF which was also first announced at E3 and came out within a year. I honestly don't remember any new 3DS game that was first announced at E3 last year. But at the same time, Nintendo Directs were a monthly affair last year. Since we haven't had many so far in 2014, I expect more announcements today.
