Re: Editorial: An Empty Box is $5 and a Dock is $89 - Welcome to Switchonomics

Shadowkiller97

@PlywoodStick If plain old flat ones with no design and less ports can be $50-$60, I do not see how charging more for something with more design-thought, customized for the console, that also provides tangible ease of use can be considered greed.

People keep mentioning how it costs so little to make this thing. If that is the case, I implore someone to start making them and selling them for less.

Re: Editorial: An Empty Box is $5 and a Dock is $89 - Welcome to Switchonomics

Shadowkiller97

@PlywoodStick When the Switch was announced, I knew I wanted an extra dock right away. But then prices were announced and my heart sank. But then I did some more research. Docks are expensive for any device. Something that just has power and HDMI out is around $30-$40. Add the cables, let's assume $10 each, and you are already at $50-$60 for a 3rd party solution. I think the extra price for the official dock is worth it then to have something that is sturdy, provides easy docking (no fumbling with wires), is designed to account for heat, etc.

Re: Poll: What Wii U Ports Would You Like to Play on Nintendo Switch?

Shadowkiller97

I really want to play Hyrule Warriors again. Maybe Hyrule Warriors 2 with BotW models added? A port with the legends stuff would be fine with me too. On the go would be great. I know it came out for the 3DS but I avoided that since it was plagued with subpar performance.

For the others, Color Splash would be awesome. I have held out on buying that because I am hoping for a port. Mario RPGs are better on the go anyways. Last, I want XCX. After the joy of discovering how fun it is to play large expansive open worlds both on the big screen and on the go, I would love to have this on the Switch. I never had time for it when it came out so I haven't played it yet.

Re: Guide: How To Beat Zelda: Breath Of The Wild's Hardest Shrine Quest, Eventide Island

Shadowkiller97

I didn't think of stealing the orb from the Hinox. After several failed attempts I realized that the metal boxes do quite a bit of damage if you hit them in the eye with it. So on my next attempt I salvage the two boxes on the beach, along with the two boxes near the altar and used them to take him down.

Also, for the camp with the third orb, I climbed up to the hilltop where the shrine appears and threw bombs down. The bokoblins crowd around it trying to figure out what it is and you can easily clear the camp by just throwing more bombs.

Re: EA Confirms Vancouver Team Will Produce FIFA 18 on Nintendo Switch

Shadowkiller97

I am not into FIFA or sports games in general, but regarding this controversy... What is the main difference between the PS3/360 versions and the PS4/XBO versions? Is it just graphics? If it's just graphics, why does it matter which version the Switch is based off of, since we know graphics will be downscaled from PS4/XBO versions anyways?

Re: Super Mario Run Jumps Onto iOS on 15th December, Priced $9.99 for Full Unlock

Shadowkiller97

Just for reference:
New Super Mario Bros. - 30.8M - $40
New Super Mario Bros. Wii - 29.9M - $60
New Super Mario Bros. 2 - 10.6M - $40
New Super Mario Bros. U - 5.45M - $60
https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/sales/software/wiiu.html

Sure some of these are due to bundles, but I am just trying to point out how much nostalgia lies in 2D Mario games. Also keep in mind that all of these sales were limited to the install base of the hardware.

Additionally, looking at the numbers above, any Nintendo "fans" that do not want to pay $10 for a Miyamoto-produced, Tezuka-designed Mario game can not seriously continue to call themselves Nintendo fans...

Re: Super Mario Run Jumps Onto iOS on 15th December, Priced $9.99 for Full Unlock

Shadowkiller97

@khaosklub 5M at $10 vs 25M at $2. You could argue that 25M is better, however, this also has a free component. So in this particular case since the revenue is the same, I don't think it matters how many people actually paid. In fact, I think 5M at $10 is better. It is better to have the perception of a quality product at a premium price. It prevents dilution of the brand, which is one of the prime reasons Nintendo has waited so long to get into the mobile market.

Re: Report Focuses on Nintendo Switch Touchscreen and IR Pointer on Joy-Con Controller

Shadowkiller97

@SLIGEACH_EIRE I think there is a pretty good chance this is how it works. If you watch the first part of the trailer, the screen doesn't "switch" until well after the supposed connector has been removed. The switch doesn't happen until the console is completely out of the dock. I think you might be right... maybe if you have the console charging via cable, it can stream to the dock.

My guess is that they did not show this feature to avoid Wii U confusion. I don't anticipate them ever showing it in trailers either for this same reason. Maybe it will just be a feature they casually list on spec-sheets for more knowledgeable gamers to find.

It's my dream anyways... loved two-screen gaming and will be sad to see it go.

Re: Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Needs To Sell 2 Million Copies To Make A Profit

Shadowkiller97

@Pikachupwnage Unfortunately, I doubt 10 million will ever be achievable. Not a single Zelda game in Nintendo's history has ever gotten near that.

Maybe Ocarina of Time if you combine both the N64 original and 3DS remake sales together. Or maybe Twilight Princess if you combine all three versions together.

5 million should be pretty attainable though. Especially when you consider all the people who "bought a Wii U just for Zelda." The Wii version of Twilight Princess did really well probably because it was a launch title. Everyone inclined to buy a console for a Zelda game would find it quite justifiable to jump in at the beginning. Skyward Sword didn't fare as well because its much harder to justify buying a console at its death for one game.

Re: Rumour: French Media Claims Nintendo NX is Set for September Reveal

Shadowkiller97

My guess is that Skyward Sword is coming to the Wii U this year. It will probably be the November/Black Friday Wii U game now that Color Splash is October. It seems possible since TP was announced just 3 months before release. And the remasters only take about six-ish months. I would also imagine a Loftwing amiibo that maybe summons a Loftwing in Breath of the Wild?

Re: E3 2016: How The Sin of Getting Lost Has Been Pardoned in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Shadowkiller97

@rjejr Yea... I think it does confirm that NX has no second screen. Why else remove it when WW and TP had both Gamepad maps and mini maps? Even the 3DS games had always on maps... And now it's too distracting? It is very upsetting to me personally. I've loved the Gamepad maps so much. Every time I've gone back to play PS3 games with maps I've missed not having to constantly pause to get my bearings... Truthfully, if they had a map screen for Wii U but not for NX, I would definitely get the Wii U version... So I guess it does make business sense, but I'm upset nonetheless.

Re: E3 2016: How The Sin of Getting Lost Has Been Pardoned in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Shadowkiller97

@rjejr They did take out Gamepad use... At least the screen part of it. Word from the show floor is that the bottom screen is just black. Then Aonuma made a comment about how "If you had [a GPS] down in your lap [when driving], you’re going to get into an accident!" This is super disappointing as a Gamepad map is my favorite feature in an action adventure game! 😢

Re: Nintendo Confirms Its E3 Plans for The Legend of Zelda

Shadowkiller97

@JpGamerGuy90 I disagree about the Direct only reaching Nintendo fans. Every major gaming publication that isn't solely focused on one of the other consoles will cover a Direct. Traditional news outlets also write articles about a Direct. And if the news is big enough (a new console) I would expect the coverage to be nearly as big as E3... except everyone will only be talking about Nintendo as opposed to talking about everything. Add to the fact that outside of gamers, many people don't even know what E3 is. And those gamers will get just as much info/news out of a separate NX event that they would get in an E3 presentation.

Re: Soapbox: Game Reviews Always Need a Final Score

Shadowkiller97

A score is important because it sums up the feelings about the game. Some people are overly critical... i.e. I could focus on each of the parts that were problems, but in the end, I think it was pretty good so I give it an 8.5. Other people are excessively flowery... i.e. I could focus on the best parts of the game that I am completely enamored with, but in the end, I think it was just okay so I give it a 6.8.

Basically, words can be vague, misinterpreted, misunderstood. A score or a grade provides clarity at the end of the day. Do the good points mentioned in the review outweigh the bad, or vice versa? The scores can have nothing to do with being objective, they are important even just to provide an opinion.

Re: Reaction: Nintendo Shakes Up E3 With No NX and a Focus on Legend of Zelda

Shadowkiller97

@MegaAdam Yes, I agree. The days of having months and years between announcement and release are gone. I think the only reason PS4 and Xbox One were able to get away with their 9 months between announcement and release was because people were so desperate for a new gen after the previous one lasted so long. At the very least, pre-orders need to begin very soon after announcement.

Re: Reaction: Nintendo Shakes Up E3 With No NX and a Focus on Legend of Zelda

Shadowkiller97

@Yorumi That's not entirely true. If all you have is a W-2 (and I would say that a vast majority of tax returns ARE that simple) then you probably will have a refund due because the W-2 withholdings usually don't take into account any above the line deductions or credits or what not. Obviously, it gets more complicated if you have other sources of income, like a self-employment, rental, investments, etc. Even then, people generally over-pay as that is better than having interest and fees due when you file your return. So there IS an increase in spending around tax season. Ask any car salesman and they will tell you the same.

Re: Feature: A Summary of Nintendo's Key Announcements on NX, E3 and Mobile

Shadowkiller97

@Yorumi They have released games pretty quickly after announcing in the past. The ones that I can think of off the top of my head that were 3-6 months after announcement:

Super Mario 3D World
Majora's Mask 3D
A Link Between Worlds
M&L: Paper Jam
Twilight Princess HD
Kirby Planet Robobot
Wind Waker HD

And if you up that to 9ish months you can add:

Pokémon X & Y and Pokémon Sun and Moon
Hyrule Warriors
Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze

And I excluded things like Captain Toad, Rainbow Curse, or Tri-force Heroes because I assume you would argue they're shovelware or that they were easy because they reused assets. I included the remakes because even though they are remakes, they are hardly shovelware. If we got a couple of good HD remakes this year, I'd be content.

And again this is only the things I could think of quickly from the past several years. I am sure I missed plenty.

Re: Reaction: The NX Release in March 2017 and How It Changes the Game

Shadowkiller97

@MrGawain Yea, that's my biggest worry too. With Wii U, I was fine with waiting a couple of weeks for AC3 or even a month or so for Darksiders 2, but that was clearly not true for most other people as most of those late ports were not well received at all. With this launch timing, some of this year's games if ported would be late by 3-6 months. I feel like it will be the same situation for 3rd parties all over again, except maybe the fact that the investment for porting is not that high this time if rumors are to be remotely believed.

Re: Reaction: Nintendo Shakes Up E3 With No NX and a Focus on Legend of Zelda

Shadowkiller97

So the announcement says NX won't be shown at E3. Maybe that can mean a similar approach to what Sony did with the PS4. It was named at an event in February, and games and tech demos were shown off. It wasn't actually shown, the design and such, until E3.

Maybe Nintendo will give it a name and show off games at E3, but won't talk about the hardware at all until later? Maybe that's also why only Zelda will be playable. Because the NX won't be there, all the other games they talk about cannot be playable.

Also, on that same point, they simply said that only Zelda will be playable. That doesn't mean that they won't be showing much more that.

This is probably all high hopes. I remember having similar high hopes last year only to have them all come crashing down hard.

Re: Star Fox Zero Makes a Positive Start in the UK Charts

Shadowkiller97

@rjejr Yup, you can definitely go back and do it without. In fact, one of the most addicting qualities of the game is the itch to replay a level immediately after completing it, because you get that feeling that you could do so much better after seeing the entire level. The more you re-play, the more you know the level, the easier it is to rake up the score.

Re: Star Fox Zero Makes a Positive Start in the UK Charts

Shadowkiller97

@rjejr That is not true. I have been playing co-op without clearing the levels solo. You just push X on the level select to start co-op instead of A for solo.
EDIT: It appears you do have to beat at least the first level solo before you can do co-op. I guess I did do that as I wanted to jump in right when I got the game and my friend wasn't there at the time. But after that every mission can begin in co-op mode from the map.

Also, if you do die several times in a level, a box will appear that will grant you invincibility so you can clear it and move on.

Re: Review: Star Fox Zero (Wii U)

Shadowkiller97

@heyzeus002 You can play off-TV if you really want. I believe the minus button swaps the screens between TV/Gamepad. So you can see the ship view on the Gamepad most of the time and switch to the cockpit when you need the precision with the minus button. Several people have even mentioned that they find swapping screens more appealing than looking at two screens for even just playing on the TV.

Re: Rumour: More Claims Made For New Legend of Zelda on Wii U and NX, Gender Choice For Playable Character

Shadowkiller97

@IceClimbers I agree. All the games could easily work. But not by flipping a switch. You have Darunia who makes Link his brother and names his son after him. You have Ruto who is constantly teasing him about their engagement. You have Mido who is jealous of his relationship with Saria (Groose jealous with Zelda). You have Telma flirting with Link all the time and making him uncomfortable. I could keep going...

Could all of those things be done with a female character as the hero? Of course they could! Could you just swap out the gender in those games and leave everything as is and have it still work? No. That is what I am getting at here. I am fine with them having a female hero, but having the game be neutral in every aspect because the player could choose either gender will be a shame. I just don't see Nintendo taking the time to really make two games so that both genders get equal love. If they do, I'll bite my words and gladly play the game twice.

Re: Rumour: More Claims Made For New Legend of Zelda on Wii U and NX, Gender Choice For Playable Character

Shadowkiller97

@nab1 If they actually did that, that would be awesome. What I am afraid of is that they are just going to have the same game with only things that could fit either choice. Like @MrGawain said, it is hard to think of any game with an avatar choice where the actual main playable character is memorable. As I stated before, I have nothing against a female hero. I would rather Nintendo just go with one or the other completely instead of straddling in between the two.

Re: Rumour: More Claims Made For New Legend of Zelda on Wii U and NX, Gender Choice For Playable Character

Shadowkiller97

@IceClimbers But choice does change the character. With choice they have to manage each interaction to make sure it works with either choice. I would be excited to play a female hero too, but I just want them to pick one. Don't give us the worst of both worlds...

I suppose they could go with extra effort and make both work and be believable. I doubt Nintendo would do that though. If they did, I would gladly take back everything and happily play the game twice.

Re: Rumour: More Claims Made For New Legend of Zelda on Wii U and NX, Gender Choice For Playable Character

Shadowkiller97

I am all for having a female hero this time around. I am not as thrilled about it being a choice. I get that its Nintendo's stance that Link is the "link between the player and the game" and that its always a representation of the player, but that just isn't true. Link has defining attributes, his pointy ears, his fair skin, his blond hair, his blue eyes, etc. He is a recognizable character. That said, because he is never the same person and is reborn in each iteration, I have no issues with a female hero in the new game. But choice is unnecessary. It will remove some of the subtle interactions between the player character and other NPCs that previous games have had. Plus, gender is not everything. I am a guy, yet Link still doesn't represent me. I don't have blond hair, fair skin, blue eyes, etc. If you are going down this path, then they might allow you to customize the entire appearance. Which will make the character completely unrecognizable.

Re: International Game Developers Association Issues Critical Statement Over Nintendo and Alison Rapp

Shadowkiller97

@zool As @Yorumi stated, most employment contracts in the U.S. are Employment-At-Will contracts.

A quick definition from Wikipedia:
"At-will employment is a term used in U.S. labor law for contractual relationships in which an employee can be dismissed by an employer for any reason (that is, without having to establish "just cause" for termination), and without warning."

Of course there are many other laws that protect certain attributes (age, gender, race, etc.), so most company policies will require some reason so they can avoid lawsuits; however, legally, no reason is necessary.

Re: Soapbox: No, Star Fox Zero's Controls Are not Bad or Broken

Shadowkiller97

@Yorumi Requiring getting used to something doesn't necessarily make something bad and definitely doesn't make it a barrier to entry. One of the articles I read mentioned that the reason he had to get used to the controls was because he had to learn a new way to think, i.e. you no longer have to position the vehicle right behind your target, instead you can fly over it and shoot down.

So maybe its not a barrier to entry but for re-entry? Perhaps a new player to genre might not need much time to get used to the controls at all.

Nintendo can never seem to win. They make a game that looks and plays similar to entries before it, and they are always rehashing the same stuff. They create something new with interesting new ways to solve problems and they are ruining a game by forcing new things down our throats. I, for one, like both approaches. Maybe that makes me a fanboy, but I guess I am fine with that.

Re: Preview: Preferring the Air in Star Fox Zero

Shadowkiller97

@Kirk I agree with your point, but most of these previews also state that then new control makes things interesting such that it is worth it to get the hang of them. From the sounds of it, people aren't as annoyed with coming to grips with the controls like they were with TW101 or Kid Icarus.

That aside, I am most looking forward to the co-op mode. I love the idea of having a separate pilot and a separate gunner. Makes the whole Poe/Finn and Rey/Finn scenes in the new Star Wars movie a reality
