Re: Nintendo Reveals The Best-Selling Indie Games On The Switch

@NoxAeturnus the problem is not with content. In fact, I believe the large volume of content makes the game all the more daunting and sterile. However the biggest problem I have with it is the way its mechanics are designed. The amount of travel to reach the point you died at, and then defeating the shade before you can try a pesky boss battle only to die again - it's tremendously cumbersome. I do acknowledge that games can be hard and many players enjoy this, but for me it falls more in the range of annoying than challenging. On top of that, combat is a very important aspect of this game, but the mechanics are not really perfect, with very little options. For example, I always prefer a more ranged approach to combat. Hollow Knight is terrible in that aspect. And to top it off, there is no option to make the game palatable for those who do not enjoy these aspects of the game. It is almost like a singular vision of the developers packaged in a git-gud-or-get-out kind of a game.

Hollow Knight feels like an additional day job. Its main flaw in my opinion is it takes itself too seriously, and does not have any respect for the players' time. I do understand that the 'git gud' crowd loves it, but it is not worth my time after having a full time job.

P.S.: Love Stardew Valley and Celeste among the others in the list.

Re: Nintendo Switch Has Been The Best-Selling Console In Japan For 12 Months In A Row

Nintendo has a very interesting trump card; the Switch has not received any significant price cut yet. Given that there will be around 50 million Switches sold by the time next gen arrives, and production costs possibly reduced, Nintendo has a lot of room to breathe. Only way they can go wrong is if they continue with the same pricing and less games or something really stupid.

  • this i feel is a very welcome improvement!

I've played through act 1 and parts of act 2 during the weekend, and really enjoying it. The game is pretty difficult at the default setting, but it's not unwinnable till this point. Without the difficulty, this game would become very drab, as most of the stuff (hit%, crit criteria, etc.) are quite transparent and predictable.

@hatch That's great to hear, thanks. I am somewhat interested in this title as I never had a Wii U, so keeping my fingers crossed.

@TeethInDarkness It is not about internal disk space, cloud saves are the only way to safekeep your data in case something bad happens with the device. For the games I have beaten, it is still okay, but I don't like the idea of losing 70-80% progress, in case the device gives up at that point.

@imgrowinglegs @hatch Saw it at the US eshop, will be nice if a mistake.

@Cosats Agreed but isn't the decision to prevent save data cloud backup awkward as well? And what kind of save scumming is possible with this title? As someone paying for the service, I would expect a system which works for all games. I have only bought one game (FIFA 19) without the feature and will avoid any such game unless I feel it is really essential.

Re: Reggie: Don't Expect Nintendo Switch Online To "Mirror" The Competition

San_D

Improvements to the online services are necessary, and hopefully Nintendo will attend to that. For example, cloud save is a pillar of the service, but some games disallow that - this genuinely needs a fix. What won't happen in my opinion are the N64, Gamecube, Wii... games in a VC like service or in the Online service. Let me explain.
Nintendo is pretty capable of porting/remastering some of these games and sell those to us in the $20-40 price points (or maybe more) like the rumored Metroid Prime Trilogy/Twilight Princess. Also the 3rd parties like Square Enix are already doing that by porting older Final Fantasy games. So they won't be giving those away as part of a yearly $20 service. Even having these games in a VC like setup will have price points like $10-30. That makes these directly compete with the indie titles price wise. In a battle like that, due to the nostalgia and being older AAA titles, these will probably win, and cannibalise the indies, whom Nintendo are kind of courting in this generation.
Hence as much as we want these classic games, (I would even give $60 for the GBA Fire Emblem) probably not going to happen. They know that hardly anybody wants NES games, so they give those out as sweetener.
