These are just games which have been nominated or won - I wouldn't read too much into these to have Zelda announcements during the show. If they have announcements then good, I won't have my hopes high. By the way, these are terrible sales, on Steam you can get discounts on this year's nominees like Death's Door and Loop Hero.
Please take this feedback: My problem with Nintendo these days is how they overcharge their customers in the name of evergreen titles. Even if you can play 10 year old titles, technology moves forward and other companies bring their prices down accordingly. With Nintendo, they will still charge $60 for a previous generation title, and won't even give the option for previous owners to "upgrade" it at a reasonable price.
Tell me one thing, is there any time limited content in this game? I mean, if I buy this game now/later, will I be locked out of certain content as those were only available during some event in the past?
@Znake Good if they follow that but given Nintendo's attitude since 2020, I'm not so sure. What you say about the user base is logical, but I don't trust Nintendo to do the most logical things (to be fair, the gaming industry doesn't always do the most logical things). Do you have a link where they have announced backwards compatibility? I don't remember seeing something like this and this is the reason I have recently reduced purchasing on the Switch drastically.
@Znake Wii U libraries didn't carry forward to Switch, not sure what makes you so confident. However, I do agree Nintendo is way behind in terms of power and needs to bring over upgraded hardware in order to even run indie games in a decent manner.
@BloodNinja The Switch library is accomplished enough, especially with all kinds of indies. Buying those again will be terrible. If they don't make the next system backwards compatible, I will definitely stay away, even if it has something as legendary as BotW.
Had this not been published by Nintendo, the unempathetic ones wouldn't have cared. But now they have to defend this game and studio somehow. I too have to work in a very high-pressure environment, that does not entitle me to sh*t on others - on the contrary, if their lives improve, that may become an example and improves my industry/organisation as well. So shame on you tough guys!
A slightly unrelated question: if I have not played Animal Crossing since launch and want to get into it now or in near future, is there any content which I can no longer access because those were only available during timed events?
I am thoroughly done with this type of shenanigans by Nintendo. I am not hankering for these games and not the NES/SNES games either. Come 2022, I may actually cancel the base NSO as it does not offer much value to me. I'd rather take a $15 dollar solo plan to be able to play online (which I do rarely) and save data cloud. I don't need these retro games.
Hold on, you mean to say that since you have a save in the new Switch, you can't just delete that and do this transfer thing after that? Hats off to Nintendo!
Okay thanks. Now Take Two have lost me as a customer, even if they release whatever they intend to release. Taking those mods down would have been enough, but they had to go the whole length, didn't they? At this rate, there's probably no AAA publisher left whom I can support in good faith (and that includes Nintendo). Indies FTW.
@Max_the_German Very valid concern, it does seem like lots of stuff goes on in this game in terms of particle rendering etc. Hope this performs well despite that. Fingers crossed.
This was better for me than a proper Direct. Still processing which ones to buy in future (or maybe on Steam). Toem and Tetris Effect seemed like standouts.
@Late @BANJO N95 was THE phone. It even had TV out, which pretty much meant you could play it like a mini console. It wasn't super polished though and modern day HDMI ports are much better, but back in those days N95 seemed like magic.
I remember this, enjoyed a lot initially but then grew out of it and never managed to finish it. Thanks for bringing those memories back!
@BANJO I think the N-gage was terribly underrated due to the form factor and all. There was Asphalt 2 which was a really fun and solid arcade racer and not evil MTX-ridden cash grabs that those have become now. N-gage 2 (the service) had a beautiful fishing game called Creatures of the Deep - I miss it dearly.
@Burning_Spear I think I know what you mean. I think the themes where the play area is almost transparent and some background art is visible, are very distracting in general, which is why I never use those themes. Especially bad was the Bowser's Fury one. The previous one featuring Mario Golf was really nice and opaque.
@Joe-b Nintendo doesn't even release paid DLC for Mario Kart, I don't know why. And Nintendo are the last publishers I'd expect to give away stuff. I won't say more, Nintendo Ninjas may come after me.
@Nclind Really balanced comment. I am personally keeping a tab on the Deck, although I'm past that age that I become an early adopter. However if this is good, I'll eventually buy one. In fact, that would mean cheaper games for me as Steam and Epic both acknowledge that places other than US, UK and Japan exist and hence the buying capacity at those places may not be the same.
@Mr-Fuggles777 Not sure if that's the case, but would be a good wake-up call for Nintendo.
@Vegeta937 Completely agreed. I don't want to give Nintendo any money till I get a reason to, and that applies to indies I used to buy on Switch. Unless there is a clear roadmap ahead for a better performing Switch and what other first party titles are planned ahead, Nintendo gets very little to no money from me. As it stands, the current Switch can't maintain 720p 30fps on indies and BotW2 is the only first party game ahead that interests me.
I want a game without any combat and high replayability. I may check this out on Steam. Any other recommendations? (I don't really want Animal Crossing or Cozy Grove due to the daily check-ins or time limitations.)
The only thing that interests me about Playdate is that Lucas Pope is developing for it. That guy is a bona fide genius, both Papers Please and Obra Dinn are in my top 10 games of all time. Let me see what this new game is about. Otherwise, don't like this thing at all, looks like absolute waste of money.
And no, I don't want another Nintendo handheld, the Switch is enough and I'd prefer Nintendo building on their success with the Switch, for example the next iteration having backward compatibility, better performance, actual stability in games, etc.
@bigbankhank @Mgalens Indeed, even Hades at higher difficulty levels (where you could have more enemies on screen) stutters significantly. I don't think buying games on Switch is very justifiable anymore. Voting with our wallet is the only way the message gets to them.
@Mgalens Even first and second party titles are not immune to this. Age of Calamity's frame rate issues are well documented. Bowser's Fury too seems to have issues. Then there was Breath of the Wild's Korok Forest, and that was a launch title. There would be a point where developers, even though they want to invest towards optimisation will be unable to do so. One could argue it has already started with more and more Cloud versions getting announced, which is a different can of worms.
This is why we need a Switch with upgraded internals. Not to play in 4K but to be able to play with a stable framerate and decent resolution without the developers needing to work their arses off to optimise. With indie developers, it's more effort actually as they work with smaller teams, but they still do it because they are passionate. Another positive for this game, it has a demo. Have grabbed it, will try soon.
@Whatsmyname What? Your logic is like I can't form an opinion about whether I want a game because I haven't bought the game. Or I have to buy these games and I have to like those.
@johnvboy Of course, they are a billion dollar corporation and they will think through their pockets, and I am saying exactly that. I do not want to put Nintendo (the business) into a pedestal that whatever they come up with is gold and whatever they do is to make people smile (which is pretty much the sentiment of certain sections of their fandom). I think calling out on cynical practices actually does them good. And then if you say, yes, all they do is bring smile to that 10 million faces, then the Donkey Kong fans among them may want to have a word with you.
@Whatsmyname Who said I am waiting? I have spent half of my usual spend last year, and this year, it's at a negligible level. Regarding me infesting this site, if you don't like my opinion, please feel free to report and then let the site decide if I am welcome here. As I said, I do like Nintendo as a developer, so I visit here to get news about that - simple.
@johnvboy I agree with you, it's not my concern that 10 million other people are buying this game. And I will definitely vote with my wallet. Problem is, since 10 million people have bought it, Nintendo starts making business decisions on the basis of this success and repeats this. I guess if you don't see value in this particular package, probably similar ones in future won't please you either (of course there could be exceptions). I am not saying it has to be the universal opinion, but when there is a group of users who are raising concerns about Nintendo's business practices, that should not just be considered whinging, which seems to be the default response of fanboys to everything critical towards Nintendo.
@johnvboy Right, unless the ratios match to the 3rd place of decimal, the trends are not similar enough. The very fact that Nintendo charges $60 for a 10 year old game with a few uplifts and locks fast travel features behind $25 artificially scarce toys and then their fandom just laps it all up is the sign that they are milking their loyal fans. Not to mention that to get ports of immediate previous generation games on Switch you have to pay $60 even if you owned those Wii U games. Even then you, as a loyal fan don't have any problem with Nintendo's business practices - okay, I get it. I do not consider myself a Nintendo loyalist though (thank heavens) because I don't want to be stuck in a Stockholm syndrome situation. I do think Nintendo is very good as a developer, which is why I play some of their games, but they appear to be extremely egregious as a business, which sticks out very, very badly, especially in the modern age, and I am fast losing interest in giving them any business.
@johnvboy That's what I said - Switch is equivalent to the Wii, at least in terms of sales and attach rates. What I implied was that a lot of these sales are from the new crowd and they may not be around for the next generation (like Wii U). On top of it, Nintendo continues to treat their loyalists badly (limited time releases, overpriced remasters, previous generation ports, etc. etc.), yet some of them continue to give them money. I am not even getting into the subjective discussion of whether I like their releases since 2020.
@zool Can't agree more - that's what happened to them when they relied too much on casual/new customers during the Wii era and got the boot from them during the Wii U era. Maybe Switches won't collect dust, but if Nintendo is after appeasing new customers while gouging out older customers, they may be in for a shocker when those new customers don't return. Also, they seem to alternate between a good and bad era, so they should watch out. In an ideal world, Wii U's digital games should have been forward compatible or at least upgradable to the Switch for a fee (definitely not $60) - that way, those who were loyal to Nintendo during their darkest times would actually have gotten a pat on their back. Also, Wii ports should have been $40 or less. But Nintendo's community themselves wants to blow money on Nintendo, so they continue these practices. A paradox actually. Nintendo has created a fanbase who love to get gouged.
@SnesSwitch @Blakeava1821 My comment was in a more general sense, not about a particular game or two. As a counterpoint, Pandemonium, which is a PS1 era port game works on my PC. How many of your Wii U or Wii purchases work on Switch? I am not supporting Steam Deck, I am just stating that before you sling mud at other platforms, do acknowledge their strengths. And if you think Steam contains shovelware, then how does the Switch library look to you?
@Blakeava1821 Just have a thought about how many of the Switch's advertised "thousands of games" were first released on Steam/PC. Another piece of thought - people who purchased a game on Steam 10 years ago can still play it on their current PC.
Apparently almost no one has heard of these games so these are practically new releases. 3 more titles and you don't have to pay $60 for each - what's there not to like?? Nintendo haters still throwing tantrums, I say throw them instead. /s
@BulbasaurusRex "It's not washed out at all, and it can't possibly be blurry (aside from perhaps when undocked) now that it's in HD!" Wow, ok mate, if you say so.
It's probably SE's policy to spread out their releases to make people double dip. To be fair to them, Octopath Traveler was exclusive to Switch for a year. I don't think your wish will ever come true because of limited time exclusives (which I believe involves contracts) and especially not for Switch because getting games to run on it required extra optimisation (sometimes that's a project on its own). The situation will only worsen if and when PS5 and Xbox Series X become more easily available.
@BulbasaurusRex Art style and graphical quality are not the same thing. I do understand they went for a pastel style, but the output is very blurry and washed out. The last screenshot hurts my eyes.
Honestly I want this to succeed. Nintendo's pricing is beyond exorbitant and they don't even offer localised pricing in my location; so with this, I could be buying more games and supporting more developers. Also, if Valve decides to iterate on this, we know our libraries won't be left behind. With Nintendo, who knows? They didn't offer WiiU compatibility with Switch (digital could be done) and instead chose to sell ports for $60.
At this point, I struggle to understand which is a bigger rip-off:
10 year old Skyward Sword with a few improvements and incredibly washed out graphics and apparently with control-shenanigans for $60
or
FIFA 22 legacy edition which is pretty much a decent 4 year old football game with updated rosters for $40 (provided you don't have an earlier one)

Re: Review: The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD - A Remaster That Truly Soars
@BulbasaurusRex Art style and graphical quality are not the same thing. I do understand they went for a pastel style, but the output is very blurry and washed out. The last screenshot hurts my eyes.
Re: Valve's Steam Deck Might Be The Closest We'll Get To A Switch Pro In 2021
Honestly I want this to succeed.
Re: Round Up: The Zelda: Skyward Sword HD Reviews Are In
At this point, I struggle to understand which is a bigger rip-off:
10 year old Skyward Sword with a few improvements and incredibly washed out graphics and apparently with control-shenanigans for $60
or
FIFA 22 legacy edition which is pretty much a decent 4 year old football game with updated rosters for $40 (provided you don't have an earlier one)
