Every generation there are great games that seem to be overlooked and don't translate into sales success, so is The Wonderful 101 heading for the same end result?
Over the past few weeks we've heard rumours of The Wonderful 101 having limited distribution of 30,000 units to retailers in Japan, while today brings Europe's chance to show its love for Platinum Games' action-orama-fest, followed by a North American release on 15th September 2013.
Our very own Thomas Whitehead, who reviewed the game last week, declared that "there's simply no other game on the market with such a focus on ridiculous fun - this really is a must-have title for the Wii U."
Does everyone agree? Not quite, currently the game has received a metacritic rating of 80/100 with generally favourable reviews, and whilst it's fair to say the game might not suit every type of gamer, fans of the bonkers-japanese-action game (yes, that's a real genre) will do well to find a better game to buy right now.
Nintendo's trump card comes as an added incentive for European gamers who have previously downloaded Pikmin 3 via the Nintendo eShop, as they can save 30% if they also purchase The Wonderful 101 from the platform; that makes the game only €34.99 (£27.99). Are you running out of reasons not to buy this game?
To celebrate the release of The Wonderful 101 in Europe we've knocked up a quick wallpaper using the simply fantastic artwork that you'll find on the box, enjoy!

HECK YEAH.
Very nice wallpaper indeed, I may just have to nab that one! I've had the game for a week or so for review purposes, it's a fantastic game in it's own way, however, it's just not for me at all!
Gorgeous!
They've picked a very strange week to release it. Last week and I'd have said it would have had a very good shot at hitting number 1 on the chart, but instead they put it out the same day as Saints Row 4, Splinter Cell: Blacklist (both of which have reviewed better than 101), XCOM: The Bureau and Disney Infinity.
For a while I thought 101 might be the game that made me buy a Wii U, but it sounds like something I can wait for rather than a must play now title. I hope it does well though as I love the theme and art style.
@SanderEvers whoops, that should be rectified now!
I am holding it in my hands right now! The last direct convinced me to give it a shot. The optional Japanese Dub did it for me as well... Happy Gaming! =)
"The requested content cannot be loaded." Rats.
Well, I hope y'all over in Europe have a blast with Wonderful 101! I think I'll play the demo again later, and count down the days until September 15th.
You lucky Europeans. I wish NA release date was this upcoming week. I'll be on vacation from work and would very much like to play it while I'm off. Oh well, I patiently await its arrival and will get caught up on a couple of other games I've been meaning to complete.
@SanderEvers @TreesenHauser whoops (again) that should be working now!
@antdickens Yep! Thank you
@Peach64 The new XCOM is terrible. I'm a big fan of the strategy games but this new shooter is just plain bad. I wish it was better. I agree, however, that last week would have been perfect. In the States it's getting released the same week as GTAV!
@Peach64 You just can't be convinced, honestly. And I believe their strategy for release globally is beyond our understanding.
Well, he is my Wonderful copy. Goodbye guys. I'll be focusing a lot more on actual games from now on and I believe I'll come back haunt you again around Christmas season.
Just got it this morning in Stockholm. Going to play a little in the weekend:)
@Prof_Elvin_Gadd - "In the States it's getting released the same week as GTAV!"
Which isn't coming out on the Wii U, so it gives Wii U owners something to do And it's also 2 days earlier. And not nearly the same genre. 2 weeks earlier it would be up against Rayman, a month later Sonic. There are only so many release dates in a year
Doubt release day - I still need 2 extra controllers to play w/ the boys and I'm only getting Pikmin 3 today - but it will be soon.
My desktop monitor has been native 1440x900 for over 5 years (Acer AL1916W). Guess that explains alot. (Though it's currently running at 1024x768 on my parents 12 yr old Dell as my PC died yesterday. Maybe I should buy the monitor package?)
@Falco No stores have him at 45 euros !
I started pikmin 3 2 days ago so that will keep me busy until sept 15. Please support the game, Europe. I will do my part when it arrives here
@rjejr Did I say it was? It's still up against it, and you know GTA is one of the biggest series on any console. I'm getting TW101 on launch day so relax, and stay out of mine and Peach's conversations please . Your unnecessary argument is weak buddy, and 2 days isn't really much time between releases. It doesn't matter if it's the same genre, it's still a monetary based decision for gamers.
Come ON, September 15th.
platinum should make another god hand like game
Disclaimer: EU only - not a fan of Nintendo spreading out EU and NA launches (Also Friday is a much better launch day than Sunday - please NOA do that)
i love this game cant wait for it
I think the Wonderful 101 will be over looked game like Okami, sadly, also the Wii U sales doesn't help the game.
@Prof_Elvin_Gadd - I know GTA is huge, but I still stand by my argument - GTAV isn't being released on the Wii U, W101 is, so anybody with a Wii U, who upgraded from a Wii and doesn't have a PS3 or Xbox360, will spend their money on W101 and GTAV isn't an issue. And the genres matter, the games are very different, different wallets the money has to come out of. The 2 days part was kind of a joke, I know 2 days don't matter. If GTAV was releasing on Wii U then W101 would have a horrid launch and I'ld chastise them for picking that date, but it has Wii U pretty much too itself so in my opinion the date is as good as any.
Thank you for the wallpaper
@rjejr I'm not chastising them at all, I just agree with Peach when she says the date could have been better. It's not a big deal. I can guarantee that a lot of Wii U owners also have other systems as well. If you don't understand that I don't know what to tell you. I love Nintendo just as much as anyone, I'm just not blind. Anyhow, happy gaming! I'm definitely looking forward to TW101, as I know you are as well.
@Peach64
Did you play the demo? After I watched the Director's Cut trailer I was shocked at how good the game looked, so I gave the demo a go and wow... I played it three times in a row I loved it so much lol! After those 3 extensive playthroughs, I'm convinced W101 is the funnest game I've played in many, many years (with 2 exceptions- Pikmin 3 and Fire Emblem Awakening, both of which I think are equally as fun as W101). If you haven't done so I'd highly recommend playing that demo...
I'm jealous, Europe... Take advantage and buy the game! Us Canadians have to wait almost a month!!
@antdickens "bonkers-japanese-action game" you say?
Does that extend to "bonkers-japanese-action-strategy-rpg game" of the type that Project X Zone is?
I know they're nothing alike in concept and play but the cheesy over-the-top dialogue, the Japanese voice-acting, insane plot - there's this something about PXZ which drags me back and I can see that coming with TW101
thanks for the wallie
Yeahy for dual audio! No disrespect for the "Saturday morning English dub" version and voice actors, but I like my madness to scream at me in Japanese. Loving the game so far!
@gojiguy A small price to pay when you live in Canada and we live out here. Plus, you got Ice Hockey! (in Portugal we only have roller skate hockey). Patient my friend, it will be well worth it.
