Re: Nintendo Download: 3rd October (Europe)

Linkstrikesback

Here's a reminder for anyone after a digital copy of wind waker.

game.co.uk sell download codes for most nintendo games upon release, and normally at the same price they have retail copies, so it would be £45 through game.co.uk instead of the £50 nintendo want. Still too much for my liking, but whatever.

Re: Hardware Review: Nintendo 2DS

Linkstrikesback

@sanasa

You can lock the 3D out by a password/pin.

But it really isn't obvious at first glance of a 3ds that you can do it, so yeah, I can see your point, especially if the parents are a bit less tech savvy.

Re: Hardware Review: Nintendo 2DS

Linkstrikesback

You could do worse, I suppose. The lack of a clamshell design means I wouldn't ever buy one though.

That, and we can guarantee that in a year or so, Nintendo will be announcing the "2DSXL"

Re: Inti Creates Revealed to be Working on Shantae: Half-Genie Hero

Linkstrikesback

Wow, what spin from the wayforward guys. It's only one guy working with them, not the studio, according to the mighty no9 page.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mightyno9/mighty-no-9/posts/601267

"And actually, we share more than just a sensibility for awesome 2D action games with our friends at WayForward — one of our artists at Inti Creates, Makoto Yabe (aka KOU), is contributing some key illustrations and background art to this new Shantae as well! (He made the sweet high-five image you see below, too!)"

Re: Nintendo Launching Cloud-Based Pokémon Bank Service Alongside Pokémon X & Y

Linkstrikesback

So they should factor that into the cost of the software we're buying then. Or leave in the ability to transfer from old games with 2 consoles.

Or build an app that moves pokemon from a DS pokemon game to storage on an SD card memory, then from that SD card memory to X/Y.

They had plenty of ways they could do it for minimal cost to them, they chose the one that they thought they would be able to use to gouge more money out of players.

@mumof3kids82
You're not wrong, the pokemon transfer App is part of pokemon bank and only works if you're subscribed.

Re: Nintendo Launching Cloud-Based Pokémon Bank Service Alongside Pokémon X & Y

Linkstrikesback

Christ, no it isn't.

We've already been through this. You're not getting "1-2GB of cloud storage". You're getting like, a few megabytes at most. Do you have any idea just how many variables you can store in a 1-2 gb file? Don't answer, as you obviously do not. Because it's in the MILLIONS at the very minimum, not thousands. A single pokemon takes up no more than a few kb unless the company is hilariously terrible at programming.

Re: Nintendo Launching Cloud-Based Pokémon Bank Service Alongside Pokémon X & Y

Linkstrikesback

@SphericalCrusher

All that is possibly unique about a pokemon is all that would need to be stored.
That is, IVs, EVs, Trainer ID, pokemon nickname, location of capture, gender, moves, nature, so on.

Case in point : if you go to any of the pokemon generation websites (that allow you to copy everything important about a pokemnon and troublingly, can actually be compatiable with the DS games if you're playing roms) only take up 136 BYTES for a single pokemon, storing everything unique about it.

Just in case you're not aware, 136 bytes is 0.0001297 of a megabyte. For a single pokemon. So about 0.4megabytes for 3000 pokemon. Even being generous like I was earlier and saying 20mb was apparently an overshoot. Of course, you have to allow that there might be some new variables added to X/Y that we aren't yet aware of, so it might be a tiny little bit bigger. It's still a negligiblely small size.

It's not 1.7GB of space to save. It's 1.7GB for EVERYTHING IN THE GAME, including all music, models and everything, none of which would ever be uploaded.

Re: Nintendo Launching Cloud-Based Pokémon Bank Service Alongside Pokémon X & Y

Linkstrikesback

Then you're insane. $5/ year or whatever it is for ~20mb is a huge rip off.

Even going by other gaming comparisions, PS+ gives you a entire GB of storage for your save data, and just ignoring everything else you get from PS+ (such as you know, essentially free games and huge discounts) would mean they're charging around $1 for 20mb of storage, and that gives you complete storage for every game that ever releases on PS3/Vita, not just one single series.

Re: Nintendo Launching Cloud-Based Pokémon Bank Service Alongside Pokémon X & Y

Linkstrikesback

@BlatantlyHeroic
Because I've been able to trade my pokemon from game to game for free for years, but now nintendo wants to charge for moving them to this new generation?

Not going to happen. Yes I know about the free "trial". But that's only good for one gen, because as soon as gen 7 comes round, they'll be expecting you to pay then.

@Jazzer94
Because if the price is any more than "free" I don't care.

Re: Layton 7 is Announced, and Looks Like Quite a Departure

Linkstrikesback

@C-Olimar

The reason it's so much cheaper on iOS is because there was a 6+ year gap between the english DS and iOS releases.

Releases drop in price over time: it has nothing to do with capcom what it retails at now as that is determined completely by the market (As they haven't printed copies in forever)

Re: Soapbox: When It Comes To Software Support, The Grass Isn't Always Greener

Linkstrikesback

"Damien McFerran feels that all the Wii U needs is more Nintendo titles"

Well Damien, Sales speak louder than words and they say the wii u needed them.

If nothing else, they make it look good for Nintendos coffers look good,w hich is something else nintendo sorely needs.

And I honestly can't understand the people who are insane enough to say Nintendo is better off without 3rd party games. Like, really? In what world is less choice better? Having more 3rd party games couldn't ever harm Nintendo, even in a worst case scenario.

Oh, also "that the Wii U has a powerful weapon in its arsenal which both the PS4 and Xbox One lack: the promise of dual-screen gameplay. "

Yeah, Smartglass and Vita support say otherwise. Cheap? Not at all, but they both have the ability to support dual screen gameplay if a developer wants to.

edit:
"Nice to see someone look at the state of gaming and realize that there is not a lot being missed if you don't have a non-Nintendo console."
Well yeah, no duh. There's also a ton being missed if you don't have a gaming PC, or are planning on not getting a PS4 or an Xbone. The only way to not miss anything is to get all the consoles, everyone has great exclusives.

Re: 3DS UK Success in 2013 Offset by Abysmal Wii U Figures

Linkstrikesback

Wii U is dead in the water.

And for hte people saying the uk doesn't like Japanese games or whatever, first, the PS3 is doing extremely well as you can see in the above graph, as are the original WIi, Ds and the 3DS, but more importantly the original Wii was the best selling console here for like, 4-5 years.

Don't blame the british for not buying the Wii U, blame Nintendo for making a console no-one wants to buy (and as has become increasingly obvious no-one wants to develop for either)

If you think pikmin 3 (which is very niche) or 3DS upscales like Mario World are going to save the wii ua nd make it a success, you have a nasty shock coming.

Re: Soapbox: Why We Should Expect More From The Legend Of Zelda: Wind Waker HD

Linkstrikesback

@sparkofspirit

A PS+ subscription pays for itself in discounts alone, the fact that they also let you download several full retail titles for nothing is amazing. And if your argument is "well let your subscription run out! then" so you're paying for them, well then. Where is Nintendos equivalent program? I'd love to "pay" for a subscription which in turn gives free downloads and bigger discounts, because the value for money is amazing. No-one ever has any reason to let the PS+ sub run out, because it's just that darn good.

Re: Ubisoft CEO Admits ZombiU Sales Were Disappointing, No Plans For Sequel

Linkstrikesback

Wowee, the amount of butthurt over ubisoft telling the unfortunate truth is amazing.

The Wii U has tanked in sales after the okish start and 3rd party support is dead. And it's a terrible shame that I wasted my first ever self purchased console buying one at launch thinking nintendo had any idea what it was doing. Thats a mistake I've learnt from anyway, won't be making that mistake again with anyone.

Edit: And for gods sake people, don't use VGchartz numbers. They completely make things up.

Re: Soapbox: Why Region Locking Is A Total Non-Issue

Linkstrikesback

" Pandora’s Tower, Xenoblade Chronicles and The Last Story."

~Of all the games you could have picked to use as an example of being pro region locking, you picked the ones that it took years of campaigning from the public to get released on the wii, and even then, it looked like for a long time that Pandoras tower and Last story were never getting a release in NA?

just, wow.

And besides that, there are plenty of games that get huge delays in either the NA-> Europe or Europe-> NA releases, despite being in the same language in UK/NA. I imported loads of DS games across the pond, and it angers me to no end that I can't do that.

And then you get games like virtues last reward, where the Europe version is missing the huge option of english voices, where the NA game had both the dub and subbed versions to choose from.

And as for "most games get released everywhere"? Uh, no they don't. Just a quick look on the wikipedia list of 3DS games shows that there are at least 50 3DS games in japan that don't even have a release date in Europe yet. And I just stopped counting at 50.

Re: Impressions: Multiplayer is a Big Deal in Nintendo's Wii U Lineup

Linkstrikesback

@SkywardCrowbar
Ok, so in house multiplayer isn't dead.

So what?

That doesn't excuse the fact that they should be including online multiplayer AS WELL by default. It's not " A smart piece of marketing". Being able to say "We are the only big company to not have online multiplayer in all our big multiplayer titles!" isn't a smart marketing move, it's shooting yourself in the foot.

It's a shame none of the nintendo bigwigs outside of Sakurai seems to realise this.

@AMR

Are you joking? The 3DS is better at local multiplayer, as handhelds always are, by virtue of everyone getting their own screens.

Re: Poll: Are You in the DLC Brigade?

Linkstrikesback

I want More like Luigi, less like Fire Emblem/NSMB2 packs.

Fire Emblem/ NSMB2 packs are very over priced. You'll play each map, what, once, maybe twice (Except the grinding maps in FE:A, which are their own kettle of fish anyway).

In fact, DLC has ruined the harder difficulties on awakening in that lunatic+ (And maybe even lunatic) are downright impossible without abusing at least some of the DLC for levels.

And this is from someone who beat Fire Emblem 7, 8,and Radiant dawn on the hardest difficulties (never bothered with POR for some reason), which while hard, were all much more balanced.

Re: Reggie: This Holiday Season Is Going To Be Extremely Strong For Wii U

Linkstrikesback

Aceshigh, not having stock in just means that they haven't ordered more because they have no reason to keep a huge supply of things that aren't selling.

"Get to playing all those games".
I'd love to, but the problem is it isn't 2014 so there is bugger all out to play.
All Nintendo has on the U coming that I'm interested in enough to purchase this year is Pikmin 3, and begrudgingly Mario 3D world. I don't even really want that because it's a watered down rushjob that should have been a 3DS game.
Edit: Actually, Sonic: lost worlds too, that game looks better than anything Nintendo has coming (Well played sega!)

That's means I'll only have bought 4 games this year (I'll give it to them, Lego City Undercover was amazing and one of my best purchases on any console!), but it's still downright terrible for the second calender year of a console.

Re: Feature: The Big Nintendo E3 Survey

Linkstrikesback

@Joshers744 and Nintendolife

You have Microsoft to blame for that for making it a feature of the next technological gen of consoles.

The only time I got even vaguely excited during the direct was the megaman half of the smash bros trailer. Everything else was either predictable or just even worse than expected (Looking at you, Super Mario 3D world).

Still, it could have been worse. Laughs at Xbone

Re: Reggie: This Holiday Season Is Going To Be Extremely Strong For Wii U

Linkstrikesback

@winger fish:

Clearly you missed the following words "home console". The Virtual boy was classed as a handheld, hence the "Boy" part in the name (following on from GameBoy).

It doesn't matter where you think the "race" is, it's an absolute fact that in terms of sales the Wii U has been the biggest home console flop Nintendo has ever had for its first year. Third party support is all but gone, and Nintendo can barely get its own games working on the system.

Thank god the 3DS is there to keep Nintendo afloat, or I'd be seriously worried about the companies future.

Re: Reggie: This Holiday Season Is Going To Be Extremely Strong For Wii U

Linkstrikesback

The 3DS was in a MUCH better place than the Wii U, beating the original DS models in first year sales, even before Mario 3D land or Mario kart could drop.

In comparison, the wii u is Nintendos biggest flop of a home console in history, undertracking the previous winner of that title, the gamecube, consistently every month since release.

The two cases aren't even comparable really.
