Re: Review: Disaster Report 4: Summer Memories - A Totally Unique Experience Marred By Technical Problems

@PeteDavison

Couldnt agree more,
Videogames are an interactive medium, and are as broad a spectrum, as any other medium.

Challenging material should not be shirked, especially because video games or interactive fiction, is the only medium you the player, have a direct say over how the story goes. ( most of the time )
And your choices can directly affect how the story goes.

I may not care much for The Walking Dead or other Telltale games ( because they offer no choice at all ) or The Last of Us.
But one cant deny that their stories don't carry an impact.
Nor that they both don't dwell in dark and reprehensible places.

A good movie doesn't need to be a happy movie for it to be good.
Why should video games be different or held to a different standard ?

Sometimes you want the narrative equivalent of empty calories or comfort food.
Other times you want something thought provoking or a morally grey narrative.
Cause not everything is happy go lucky and media and entertainment tend to reflect that.

@nhSnork
Occasionally i do try to get in the spirit and do the actual leg work and "roleplay" properly in the game .
But i soon get bored and just use fast travel

Though what i really want from an RPG is that people actually respond to you accordingly.
Depending on your reputation, what you did in the world and what you are wearing.
Fable II and III came closest to that.

@Incarna
Yeah pretty much
They are all emotionally stunted blocks of wood

I think Ryudo ( Grandia II ) and Cloud do it best.
Cause both do actually have a personality and do change during the game ( and Cloud has a reason for being the way he is )

But Zidane and Justin are much more likable characters, because they aren't just brood brood, edge edge .
Nor are they so over the top enthusiastic you want to strangle them.

I stil need to play Beseria
But I need to play a lot
Shines
Several Atelier games
Several Tales Games
Both Ni No Kuni's
The Mana collection
Shining Resonance
The entire nepu series ( andnow i have that damn nep nep nep song in my head)
and a lot more

@jamesthemagi @AmplifyMJ

Yeah but that is the point.
Whe games will sell anyway at ( near to) full price.
There is no reason for Nintendo to drop the price, because these titles sell like gangbusters anyway.
Mario Kart 8 is 6 years old and stil sells for 60 bucks.

That's just the way it is.
Nintendo doesn't play by the it's X amount of years old, better drop the price, rules the rest of the industry does.

( It helps that most Nintendo games are solid titles and that there is no dlc gouging going on. )

Re: Review: Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy - Back To School

KitsuneNight

@swagbag713

the naming convention of the Jedi knight series is
...convoluted

Dark Forces
Dark Forces II Jedi Knight.
Jedi Knight II Outcast ( Should be Dark Forces 3 )
And finally Jedi Knight Jedi Academy ( Dark Forces 4 then )

The full title should be: Star Wars: Dark Forces 4 Jedi Knight III: Jedi Academy.

A ludicrous title of epic Japanese proportions.

Never seen a series before, that actually changes its title midway through.

@TheWingedAvenger

Riiight that's quite some baseless assumptions you make on my behalf sport.

The idea that 8 bit is better then 16 bit is risible.
16 bit games tend to have better graphics, Better music, better controls and are generally considered to move games forward.

You might like 8bit games better, but that doesn't make 8 bit games technically better.
16 bit was a massive jump forward

And kindly don't bother with the true scotsman fallacy
" I started with so and so console, se i know what I'm talking about. You bloody younguns don't know jack."
Its a straw-man and doesn't work

Nostalgia is best left in the past.
But if you don't believe me by all means replay all those 90's games that have been left in the dust by quality of life improvements we are all used to by now.

Goldeneye is showing it's age.
Spyro is getting ropey.
Crash is infuriating
Final Fantasy is a grind fest.
Dragon Quest even more so.
Why don't SMB 2 and 3 have a save features ? The Japanese versions did and so did the all stars version ( hey 16 bit improvements )
Zelda 1 is cryptic as hell.
Zelda II has a massive difficulty spike.
Castlevania II is not just cryptic, it's badly translated and delights in being obtuse.
Caslevania III is infamous for being the hardest of them all.

16 bit on the whole improves on almost every aspect and that's why i draw the line there.

But do go on and ignore the sequels, to all the games you mentioned. that were released on 16 bit hardware.

And this might shock you, but different people like different games.
In different era's no less.

Oh, and yes I do draw the line with listening to music.
Because shock and horror, I don't like certain genres.
But if you are in to Tibetan throat warbling, that's fine just don't expect me to be in to it either eh ?

That music analogy was really silly and I am not sure what point you were trying to make there.

Now if you wil excuse me I got some 16 bit games to play
( Secret Of Mana And Seiken 3 )

Oh no I am totally the same.
I stil prefer controllers, especially the xbox ones, for PC games.

And some games just feel right or better with a controller.
Driving games, beat em ups, action games, platformers,
are all better to me with a controller in my hands.

I can make do with mouse and keyboard but i'd rather not.
It's why I prefer Jedi Academy on the Xbox ( and NX)

@Heavyarms55

It's dirt cheap on Steam about 2-3 bucks.

A port seems unlikley but never say never.

My first pc was Pentium II and it came with Jedi Knight but I couldn't really get to grips with it.
Took a while before i took to PC gaming.

Found some lovely old Star Wars PC games ina thrift store a while back
Rebel Assault II
Street Racer
Die Hard Trilogy 2
Alien VS Predator 2
Monaci Grand Prix 3
X-wing Cdrom edition

And best of all:
Dark Forces on cd rom
and Blade Runner.

But if you do buy Mysteries of the Sith.
You may find this usefull.

Just in case cause PC gaming can be ...tricky.
