Re: Oscar in Toyland on DSiWare This Friday

KDR_11k

While we're talking about old jump&runs, the original Giana Sisters on the DSi might work, the Retro level in Giana sisters DS was much easier due to the physics in GSDS and some level alterations (especially in the enemy selections, I remember that vicious ball in Level 3 being gone).

Re: Top 20 WiiWare Games in USA (27th Aug)

KDR_11k

Wasn't the WiiWare update supposed to be on Wednesdays anyway?

Germany:
(1) 1 Tales of Monkey Island 1
(8) 2 Family Slot Car Racing
(2) 3 My Aquarium
(4) 4 Driift Mania
(5) 5 My Pokemon Ranch
(6) 6 Texas Hold'em Tournament
(9) 7 TV Show King
(7) 8 FFCC Darklord
(3) 9 Bonsai Barber
(12) 10 World of Goo
(10) 11 Onslaught
(-) 12 Arkanoid Plus
(11) 13 Fun Fun Minigolf
(14) 14 Bomberman Blast
(15) 15 Tetris Party
(13) 16 NyxQuest
(17) 17 Water Warfare
(16) 18 Brain Challenge
(-) 19 3-2-1 Rattle Battle
(18) 20 Swords & Soldiers

WILL NOT BE MOURNED: Puzzle Bobble Plus (19), Three Musketeers (20)

Monkey Island holds on, didn't know there were that many people who still know that name... I wonder what'll happen when episode 2 is on WiiWare. Family Slot Car Racing outperforms Driift. I had no idea people enjoy slot cars and would have expected Driift to do better than it... Bonsai Barber dipped quite a bit.

Re: Review: Pop Plus: Solo (DSiWare)

KDR_11k

Hm, not really sure what to say, I tried a session of adventure with the goal to just get far and unlock the bosses and see some sights (so I didn't try to make chains, just pop as much as possible to increase the timer) but got too bored to continue around wave 9. While there are tons of modes they don't feel very different since you're going through the same waves anyway. I have no idea why people hype it like it's the next Zelda.

Re: Modern Warfare 2 Could Come To Wii

KDR_11k

I believe they should've made CoD4Wii a summary package of Cod4 and 6, cutting down on some levels to get the Wii's story progression to the same point it's on other systems. Of course I suspect what they're really going for is having the belated CoD4 port bomb at retail and point at that as the reason to no longer support the Wii (even if it sells millions they're probably going to complain that it's less than the other versions that weren't delayed).

Re: Wii to Retail for £200 in the UK

KDR_11k

Couldn't Nintendo take the hit from their more than somewhat impressive profits rather than screwing UK customers - who always get the poor end of the stick price-wise?

I don't know if you've checked lately but the devalued GBP means the UK prices are the lowest in the world.

Re: Top 20 WiiWare Games in USA (19th Aug)

Germany:
(1) 1 Tales of Monkey Island 1
(3) 2 My Aquarium
(7) 3 Bonsai Barber
(2) 4 Driift Mania
(6) 5 My Pokemon Ranch
(4) 6 Texas Hold'em Tournament
(5) 7 FFCC Darklord
(-) 8 Family Slot Car Racing
(9) 9 TV Show King
(8) 10 Onslaught
(10) 11 Fun Fun Minigolf
(12) 12 World of Goo
(13) 13 NyxQuest
(14) 14 Bomberman Blast
(15) 15 Tetris Party
(16) 16 Brain Challenge
(11) 17 Water Warfare
(19) 18 Swords & Soldiers
(18) 19 Puzzle Bobble Plus
(17) 20 Three Musketeers

Gone with the charts: FF4 The After Years

Monkey Island is still holding on here. Bonsai Barber seems quite successful, did it ever go that high in the US? Slot Car Racing proves that people will buy ANYTHING that involves racing. Water Warfare continues to drop while Onslaught holds... Is it the theme or the gameplay focus?

Re: Square Enix Drops Some Darklord DLC On Its PALs

KDR_11k

I think the first wave of DLC for MLaaK was codes, the second wave was actual new content.

I'm interested in seeing how many people who have not downloaded anything and how far they got in the game - stage three at the most perhaps before giving up?

I didn't get any DLC and am currently in chapter 5. It gets way easier once you get the second mage monster (great for blasting everything except mages). Generally you should build just enough to deal with what you're facing, never overengineer, you can't afford that and remember that you can instantly spawn new stuff anywhere. The waves in each level are predetermined so you can use a failed start to figure out which order you need those defenses in. Small monsters are good in the early levels but later on you need the big ones. Big monsters also have the advantage of being very good for wiping heroes in one volley, they take a long time to reload but getting a full strike on a thief before she even fires can help a lot with maintaining your artifacts.

I don't believe that the budget for this was so high that 1000 points would not be sustainable. There's not a lot of stuff in the game, most of the characters and monsters were probably taken straight from FFCC for the Gamecube (except for the unique ones which are from MLaaK), there are no environments besides the tower levels and the cutscenes are just text too. Really, I don't see what would need a massive budget in this game. PopCap sells Plants vs Zombies for 10€ on Steam and that has no DLC.

Re: Top 20 WiiWare Games in USA (12th Aug)

KDR_11k

We're on an earlier schedule now, eh?

Germany:
(1) 1 Tales of Monkey Island 1
(4) 2 Driift Mania
(2) 3 My Aquarium
(5) 4 Texas Hold'em Tournament
(3) 5 FFCC Darklord
(8) 6 My Pokemon Ranch
(-) 7 Bonsai Barber
(10) 8 Onslaught
(9) 9 TV Show King
(7) 10 Fun Fun Minigolf
(6) 11 Water Warfare
(11) 12 World of Goo
(12) 13 NyxQuest
(15) 14 Bomberman Blast
(14) 15 Tetris Party
(13) 16 Brain Challenge
(-) 17 The Three Musketeers
(20) 18 Puzzle Bobble Plus
(18) 19 Swords & Soldiers
(17) 20 FF4 The After Years

Nuked from orbit: Heracles Chariot Racing, 5 Spots Party

Bonsai Barber joined very high and Monkey Island holds onto its position. Water Warfare sees a serious drop while Onslaught rises, I wonder why?

Re: Review: OVERTURN (WiiWare)

KDR_11k

accc: Supposedly Hatfield hates the Wii though he did like Water Warfare (as opposed to Matt who had a second take on it and spewed nothing but hate with no real explanation on why he hates it). Either way he also complained the arenas were too large while this review calls them small, I guess he expected something different.

Re: Top 20 WiiWare Games in USA (5th Aug)

KDR_11k

Well, that article went up early...

(13) 1 Tales of Monkey Island 1
(1) 2 My Aquarium
(2) 3 FFCC Darklord
(-) 4 Driift Mania
(3) 5 Texas Hold'em Tournament
(4) 6 Water Warfare
(5) 7 Fun Fun Minigolf
(7) 8 My Pokemon Ranch
(8) 9 TV Show King
(9) 10 Onslaught
(10) 11 World of Goo
(6) 12 NyxQuest
(11) 13 Brain Challenge
(12) 14 Tetris Party
(15) 15 Bomberman Blast
(-) 16 Heracles Chariot Racing
(19) 17 FF4 The After Years
(17) 18 Swords & Soldiers
(16) 19 5 Spots Party
(18) 20 Puzzle Bobble Plus

Requescat in pacem: Gradius Rebirth, Equilibrio

ColorZ didn't make it in this week either. I do feel kinda bad for it cause while it's not a game I'd ever consider playing there does seem to be a genuine game in there. They've made a decent effort and should be rewarded for it.

This isn't communism, you have to make an effort people care about to be rewarded, not just any effort.

Re: Wii Sales Starting to Crash?

KDR_11k

Why do people use allcaps?

People here put too much emphasis on the "hardcore" branch. Nintendo has never appealed to the "hardcore" less or more. Lists of "hardcore" games seem to consist entirely of sequels anyway. What they need is new people on the console and those only come with games that appeal to people who don't own the console yet, most likely games unlike anything that's already on the system. The Conduit was a potential system seller had it been executed better as many FPS gamers got their fix from other systems while the Wii has the potential to do it a LOT better than the other consoles.

Generally to broaden a system's appeal you need to broaden its library, doubly so in Nintendo's case since it seems third parties won't make anything that hasn't already been made for the Wii. Releasing more games like what's already on there deepens the library but doesn't do as much as broadening it does.

Re: Wii Sales Starting to Crash?

KDR_11k

Crash is too hard a word, the current drop sees it selling at "only" the rate of the PS2 at that point in its lifetime. Yes, the lack of software is hurting but a crash is a bit more severe than just a drop in profits.

The Wii needs more games (people care about), a lower price isn't going to fix that. It doesn't matter who they appeal to as long as there are enough of them. Newbie, veteran, competitive, doesn't matter as long as they start buying. Talking nonsense about loyal fanbases won't do jack, the loyal fanbase let Nintendo wither in third place last gen and the Wii has already outsold the Gamecube by FAR.

No matter how good a system is, eventually it will stop selling. Someday, pretty much everyone who wants a Wii will have one, and most people are going to buy more than one. I am all in favor of more great titles coming out.

Yes and no matter how much we protect our planet the sun will eventually engulf it. Both scenarios are so far off as to not be relevant.

kick out the bad games and put on only the good ones on shelves. everything else can go into the bargain bin

Who gets to define good? Stores already allocate shelf space according to sales, what sells needs more shelf space and most likely people won't buy a game in droves if they hate it. Shovelware with low sales expectations will usually get maybe one or two copies on the shelves.

It maybe because most of the ppl tha want a Wii have bought it.

Obvious statement is obvious. The point is that they need to make more people want a Wii and they're discussing how to do that with the suggested solution being "more games".

If new wii fit and sports games don't boost sales then nothing will.

I think those are actually less likely to boost sales than something new since people who wanted Wii Fit or Wii Sports already had enough reason to buy a Wii without additional games of that type.

Don't worry, Wii sales will go up again when games like New Super Mario Bros Wii comes out.

Yep, a 2D Mario is the kind of game the Wii doesn't really offer yet (outside of the VC of course but you can get a cheaper system if that's all you're looking for). NSMB did something like 18M sales and is STILL selling. Galaxy is nowhere close to that.

Re: Top 20 WiiWare Games in USA (29th July)

KDR_11k

I haven't been here to compile the lists the last few weeks so the comparison numbers are from the 1st of July and thus all chart position changes are over the interval of one month.

Germany:
(2) 1 My Aquarium
(-) 2 FFCC My Life as a Darklord
(3) 3 Texas Hold'em Tournament
(4) 4 Water Warfare
(7) 5 Fun Fun Minigolf
(1) 6 NyxQuest
(6) 7 My Pokemon Ranch
(8) 8 TV Show King
(9) 9 Onslaught
(5) 10 World of Goo
(15) 11 Brain Challenge
(14) 12 Tetris Party
(-) 13 Tales of Monkey Island 1
(-) 14 Gradius Rebirth
(13) 15 Bomberman Blast
(-) 16 5 Spots Party
(10) 17 Swords & Soldiers
(12) 18 Puzzle Bobble Plus
(11) 19 FF4 The After Years
(20) 20 Equilibrio

Games of the past: Let's Catch, Snowboard Riot, Cocoto Platform Jumper, Pop-Up Pirate

Surprisingly little change over that timeframe.

Re: Pop Island New Wave Trailer

KDR_11k

I'm wondering what effect the terrain will actually have, doesn't seem to do much except bounce a player up, landing on lava certainly had no negative effect there.

If only NIntendo would let third parties that didn't have to pour millions onto their systems use Wifi. lol stupid nintendo.

I think the hurdle is running the servers and all that, not getting permission from Nintendo.
