Re: Review: R-Type (Game Boy)

KDR_11k

Ah yes, the first game I bought for the Game Boy. It was funny how the sprite flickering made the Gladiator (first boss) easier because his tail would glitch out instead of colliding with you. I think Bomba and the battleship boss were much harder than in the original though because they could only be beaten by force-cheesing them and Bydo never enters the instakill phase (in the arcade version those indestructible balls start homing in on you after a fixed amount of time and Bydo stops opening his weak point).

The freaking Baldo Gardens (level 4 in this version) were brutal. Took me forever to memorize all the patterns.

Also there's a cheat to play Conway's Game of Life, something like up+B+select when the highscore table is shown. The Game Guide mistakenly called it a drawing program...

Re: Features: Don't Touch my Samus: Metroid's Controversial Turn

KDR_11k

I'm tired of all these attempts to justify the story. Fact is that no matter how much it was hinted at before (if that was actually hinting and not just retconned) making it explicit is a departure. Doesn't really matter though, I can slog through any story, that wasn't the reason I canceled my preorder. The reason was that I heard the game is more linear with story-driven door locks and no real equipment finding. I found that inexcusable in Metroid Fusion and I'm not going to accept it here either. Prime 3 was already more of it than I was willing to take in a Metroid game. Judging by how Metroid (and any Metroid-like) goes downhill as its developer spends more time on it and develops more story ideas I think both Sakamoto and Retro should be kept away from the next Metroid. Give it to someone who hasn't run out of ideas for the actual game and instead took up writing stories to add variety. Like Chair. They did a good job with Shadow Complex, the little story that game had rarely interfered with the gameplay. Maybe Konami can throw 2D Castlevania over to Retro to give it a fresh spin considering how linear OoE was.

Re: Namco and Rising Star Team Up to Bring More Harvest Moons to Europe

In Harvest Moon, You can get Grow your own food, and Cook it, You can own and sell animals for money, you can get Married and have a Family.

In Animal Crossing,You sell Stuff you find on the Floor for a living, Have a House full of useless stuff you can't use.and You sold your Soul to a Money hugery Racoon name Nook.

In Minecraft you can grow stuff but most people prefer beating pigs to death because meat is tastier. You don't get a house at all, you need to build it yourself but you can build as many or as few niceties into it as you want. You'll likely end up with several chests of useless stuff you hoarded in case you can ever find a use for it. And then it all gets blown up by a crazy green suicide bomber.

Re: Ready Your Guns for The Westerner on Monday

KDR_11k

This is actually the sequel to a very old (and mostly ignored, but loved by some) PC adventure game called "3 Skulls of The Toltecs".

I think my PC version of The Westerner actually included the old game as well. There's a third game by now but it has a more gritty, realistic style and looks to me like it might not even be the same genre anymore (haven't checked reviews on it).

EDIT: And the way they've screwed up Metacritic with the last design change it's not even possible to find reviews on that anymore.

Re: Fan-Made Zelda MMO in Early Stages of Development

KDR_11k

Trying to compete with a company by using their intellectual property is suicidal. They're really just leeching off the reputation Nintendo has built for the Zelda name, couldn't they just make their own game? Just stick different levels, art and names on it and you're clear.

Re: Review: Giana Sisters DS (DS)

KDR_11k

The game isn't rare here, I see tons of surplus copies for 15€ so I'd guess it was a commercial failure.

Kimiko: Yeah, it's C64, maybe Corbie used the catch-all moniker PC to include the Amiga version (my C64 says "Commodore 64 Personal Computer" on it so I'll let that slide).

Re: First Impressions: GoldenEye 007 Multiplayer

KDR_11k

On paper it sounds like it’s doing everything right, but we came away feeling nonplussed. It looks good, controls well and there were plenty of tense shootouts, but it felt like a standard first-person shooter with a Bond lick of paint.

Was GoldenEye different from a regular FPS?

And besides, doesn't the Wii really need a standard but polished FPS with local and online MP?

Re: Nintendo Download: 11th June 2010 (Europe)

abe: Yep.

Mr. Bumblebee looks pretty good graphics-wise. Just looking at the manual the only downside that's apparent is that there are only six tracks and four players. As the name suggests it's a flying racing game like AiRace or Slipstream 5000. Of course there's still the concern that it may be a badly made game.

Also funny: The programmer is called Christian Köhler. And the background music in the trailer is "Flight of the bumblebees".

I'm one of the weirdos who liked Square the most out of the MaBoShi games (Most say it's the worst part) but I'm not sure if I liked it enough to warrant buying a 500 point portable version.

Re: Capcom CEO Thinks 3DS Could Learn from Apple

Nintendo keeps game pricing on a tight leash, a situation like on the app store where games of any size are practically forced to cost 1$ or even nothing and most use paid DLC to add on hidden costs isn't good for gamers or developers.

Where the F is X-Scape?

I would be interested in the other Topsy Turvy game but not this one. Got the proper Robocalypse on my iPod and am not playing that much either because I got Land Air Sea Warfare (sounds stupid but plays like Total Annihilation).

Re: This DS Game Includes Bespoke Cheese and Wine Guides

KDR_11k

Is this based on the system of Cooking Navi? That was a good system but the recipes that came with the original application were fairly limited, releasing new software with more recipes that fit more with western tastes is definitely useful.

I think this will be the European equivalent of America's Test Kitchen, not released alongside it?

Re: Review: Lead the Meerkats (WiiWare)

KDR_11k

Sim games tend to be way more complex than this, it's basically Pikmin which supposedly counts as an RTS (but I think of it more as an action game with a strong Miyamoto touch). Little King's Story has more of a claim towards being a sim than Meerkats or Pikmin but still is pretty big on action, the only reason I wouldn't say Meerkats is action is because unlike Pikmin and King's Story you don't have to watch your attack/retreat timing during fights, only tap on the enemy. Anyway, sim fans wouldn't be put off by the direct controls but by the lack of depth, sims tend to be about managing tons of variables and factors, in Meerkats there are no variables or factors to account for. Maybe if you had to collect food all the time to stay alive and assign meerkats to fertile hunting grounds to keep gathering the food it could have a claim but not as is.
