Re: Download Developer Hits a "Brick Wall" When Trying to Reach Nintendo Indie Executive for Interview

JustinH

"Better integrated store"? What is wrong with the eShop? I hate when devs complain about the eShop. Is it that they want it so open that you can accidentally buy a game with a few errant button presses, like on the PS4, or that it's so open that any kid could come along and spend $100 in two minures, like the Apple store?

Anonymous sources make for muckraking, not journalism. Gamasutra is better than this.

@Skyrise This question might be a tough one, but it was the first one that came to mind when you announced the game: Are you concerned about this might launch too close to Affordable Space Adventures on Wii U?

This isn't a question and I don't really expect you to respond, but I for one would definitely buy Futuridium on Wii U. Just adding another voice out there.

Re: Review: Flowerworks HD: Follie's Adventure (Wii U eShop)

JustinH

@Cathousemaster Yeah, it's $4 CAD, which comes to about $3.65 USD right now. I don't blame anyone for rounding up because I understand it's a business, but it is a little frustrating — two years ago when the Canadian dollar was at $1.05 USD, we weren't asking for any discounts (and we sure didn't get any).

That said I hear about what you guys deal with Down Under, spending $100 for games and seeing some games infinitely delayed, so that's definitely worse!

Glad to hear about the patch. Will make sure to check it out when it's live.

If you guys are unsure about Cosmochoria, check out the pre-alpha build on the website. It's playable in the browser and pretty fun. Just a proof of concept, but pretty polished.

Hex Heroes is almost there, so yay. Jet Getters is a really fishy situation. They cleared their goal with this mystery $9,000 pledge in the middle of the night one day, and then they canned the thing shortly after.

Re: Review: Flowerworks HD: Follie's Adventure (Wii U eShop)

@Cathousemaster I think the game is fun, but I'll admit I'm not really great at it. One thing I'd gripe about is the price — everyone is jacking up Canadian prices way past the rate of exchange to the US dollar and I know a lot of people grumbling about it. I don't expect anyone to lose money selling a game in Canada of course, but I guess it just makes me sad because I thought if anyone would be sympathetic our plight, it'd be an Aussie

That said I don't have much to add to the feedback already stated, except that navigating the overworld can be more difficult than I'd think it should be — a couple rocks will be in your way and Follie just runs into them at a dead halt instead of walking over or gliding around. It seems like a minor thing and it is, but there's big stretches of the overworld you have to walk across and it'd be good if it were a smoother experience.

All in all I'm glad I bought the game. It's good for a bit of fun over a weekend. I can see some people really loving the gameplay if they give it a shot.

You know, no one is talking about JetGetters but that $80,000 goal isn't all that far off. I'm not exactly thrilled to see another Kickstarter project dangle the Wii U is the far-off port but that doesn't mean the game doesn't look cool. Give the trailer a watch. I love the presentation:

Re: Road Redemption's Latest Footage Looks a Bit More Like Road Rash

@Kaze_Memaryu The alpha was part of the Kickstarter, and letting people in on it helped fund the game. The people who paid for the alpha in the Kickstarter wouldn't think it was fair if everyone got in the alpha for free, either.

I wouldn't want to pay for an alpha myself, but that stuff is what got this game made, so it's a bit of a necessary evil, maybe.

Re: Mobot Studios Is Bringing iOS Hit Gears To Wii U This Spring

JustinH

iOS trailer is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyirNZP3gik

Generally when I hear about smartphone ports to Wii U I'm not too excited, but this is the sort of game that might do really well with a good port. Without a Monkey Ball game on the console, there's a niche there, and the steampunk look is an interesting one for the genre. So long as they keep the price close to the $2 on iOS, I could see this finding an audience.

Re: Feature: Kickstarter's Wii U and 3DS Campaigns - 6th April

I really want Hex Heroes to make it, but it'll be tough. Earthlock looks great and is probably a shoo-in, although of course it'll need the support. Cult County will be a tough nut to crack, although I'm hoping it'll get there. Some of these other ones are in for a tough climb, although I'm glad Apexicon looks like it'll get there on its second go — it's not something I'm into, but that sort of niche product is what Kickstarter is great for.

Re: Review: Pure Chess (Wii U eShop)

JustinH

The game is good, although I'm still terrible at it. It has made me a little bit better at chess, though!

The online has improved a lot in the week since release although the basic issues remain. If you don't want to play your games live, though, you'll get your money's worth.

Re: Nintendo Download: 27th March (North America)

JustinH

Got the Sonic DLC. Very cute but real short and easy. This might be the worst week yet — nothing for either Wii U or 3DS.

@XCWarrior Good man. Anyone bemoaning this week who doesn't have Cloudberry Kingdom should jump at it while it's $7.

Re: Fiendishly Tricky Precision Platformer Chubbins Is Bouncing To The Wii U eShop

JustinH

@dahkuToby OK. First of all I didn't say it here, but I do think the game looks interesting mechanically.

I think my first issue is the game looks really empty. There's so much that can be done on a screen as opposed to a phone, and it looks like Chubbins isn't doing it. If you haven't already, look at Kung Fu Rabbit, a somewhat similar game ported from phones to Wii U. I don't think they did a perfect job by any means, but they managed to make the world feel full.

I think my other issue is that while I like Chubbins himself, the assets taken as a whole feel cobbled together. Perhaps there's something you could do to tie them together — use a bold filter, maybe play with the colours to make it all feel related. I honestly think this game could be great with striking visuals.

The biggest thing? Those backgrounds have got to go. They've too empty and too primitive. Even if you textured them — make them look like weathered stone or polished steel — that might do it.

Looking forward to the project!
