Like many others I've been wondering how the "people and Tech from our world mix with the Monster Hunter World" approach would make sense. While pondering this I found that when we play a Monster Hunter game (or any game at all for that matter) this is exactly what happens: We are transported into a strange world full of fantastical creatures and people and must first learn the lay of the land and the rules of the place to be able to face the challenges laid out before us. What we know from the real world is of limited use and we can't use the tech and gadgets we're used to in real life. We can only use our wits and what the new world and its rules provide.
Suddenly this story idea doesn't appear so strange and stupid to me after all, because in a way it simulates what players of the game experience. Perhaps in an attempt to make it more accessible to people who haven't played the game or aren't gamers at all? I can't be sure, but I'm getting the feeling that this might even be the reason (or one of the reasons) why they've chosen this story approach in the first place. It might be an attempt to reach a broader audience than only the fans of the game (and they're possibly very aware that this compromise might irritate the "fans"). Either way, considering this I will not condemn the movie or judge it before I've seen it.
@Yanina
I know, right? When suddenly James Brown kicked in with the Minotaur breaking out and gallopping towards the hero I was like "Wait, WHAT?!!" with a huge grin on my face. So unexpected and so cool. I mean: James Brown! Minotaur! Nuff said!
And I absolutely love what they've done with the remix, the new beat, and mixing it with epic soundtrack music, cutting the trailer to the rhythm. It's seriously cool.
And it's seriously left-field. As you say it gives the game attitude, shows that it doesn't take itself too seriously, which is a cool thing. It's like SHREK, actually. Nobody complained about the music choices there. On the contrary. It was applauded for that. Complainers really are a humorless bunch. I applaude the developer/publisher for this bold and fun choice!
EDIT: The moment of silence, bird's chirping, as the hero walks away after slaying the Minotaur and when Medusa shrieks in unison with James Brown's shout... that's pure, perfetcly timed trailer comedy gold!

You can still find the REAL Tarantula Island randomly when Dodo-travelling. There's this special Island you can get to with a circle of water around a larger land area with a few trees and weed and no rocks where five tarantulas are constantly running around, respawning when you catch one. Been there, done that. I wonder if there's a chance to get there again if I Dodo-travel enough... I am not using the glitch. Tried it once, too much work...
@YANDMAN
Still missing the point of my post, I see.
It is in fact not only a tiny detail, but an irrelevant one, if the topic of my post is not about describing the game's aesthetics, but asks a completely different question, and the word (which you're apparently very much attached to personally; please accept my apologies, I meant no disrespect to you OR the word, my good sir! ) is used solely to differentiate between the cover art and the in-game depiction of the protagonist in a simple and efficient manner.
But let me extend my apologies once more for any harm I may have caused you or your feelings or thoughts on artistic expression or anyone's concern for precision in regard to technical terms by my ill choice of words. I am utterly distraught if my apparent absentmindedness irritated you or anybody else in any way and sincerely apologize.
@YANDMAN Thanks. I am aware. Though it IS voxel style (as it's reported elsewhere, too). I wrote only "voxel" for the sake of simplicity and because it's not the point I was trying to make with my post anyway...
Funny what tiny details people focus on sometimes - and by doing so completely miss the point.
Am I the only one who thinks "Thomas Magnum on vacation" each time I see the protagonist (not the cover art, but the actual voxel model)? The color scheme of the shirt, the hair and the mustache just scream "Magnum .P.I.", whenever I play this or see it... I think the game is supposed to evoke a certain 80's feel (I believe I read or heard that somewhere?), so it may not be a coincidence...
So, has anyone found the "High-res Canvas" item yet? You know, the one that adds an option for prettier textures?
Sorry, couldn't resist. In my honest opinion the game is fine the way it is, and if you care to look you'll see that even though corners were obviously cut to meet a deadline that could not be extended, it is far from a heart- and effortless "rush-job" and a considerable effort must have been put into it either way.
I get that many are disappointed who expected some sort über-Pokémon with current-gen graphics. But thinking back I wonder where these expectations came from. After all: Since when have Pokémon games had state-of-the-art graphics (considering the hardware they were on)? The GameBoy Advance iterations may have been the last ones using the hardware to its full extent. Since then they have always been behind current technology graphics-wise. So there shouldn't be any surprise. And I sincerely believe that this may even be a design choice rather than inability, considering the target demographic. And it's okay anyway. It still has a lot of charme, there's still a lot to like, design-wise. There is much to "feel" there, even if there is not as much to "see" as many have apparently hoped.
The hilarious voice overs from the Japanese trailer ("Where are you going!?" - "Watch out!!") seem to be missing in other language trailers. Makes me think that those were supposed to be like comments by the players themselves. Makes sense, but feels a bit less lively. Not a deal breaker though. Seems to be tons of fun either way.
@rjejr The first game with a level editor I remember from my personal gaming history is Lode Runner on C64. That's 1983. Later I've also made my own Doom levels, as the original Doom also came with one... So yeah, they've been around. Anyone remember anything earlier than Lode Runner?
@Dpullam Thanks. Well, there IS the current demo. My advice: Jump in and see if it is for you. As far into the game as I am missions are on the short side, which is a joy rather than a con for me (Astral Chain is the better game by far, but the long missions can be strenuous and aren't ideal for shorter play sessions). You'll find the full beginning of the game in the demo, with six story missions (can't be repeated) and two free missons (can be repeated), more than enough to get the picture. I really think that this game has it where it counts: in how the mechs handle and how combat feels. It's cool and a blast somehow. Then there's the Loot Shooter (light) aspect of the game: Collect new equipment from defeated enemies on the battlefield and upgrade your Mech to your liking and play style. And that keeps me coming back, even if everything considered the game does have its shortcomings in other areas.
The first "demo" didn't convince me, but then again I seem to have been one of the few people on the planet who understood it was a (pre-alpha) prototype (it was even called "Prototype Missions" not demo") meant to get player feedback to enable the developer to meet customer demand better. It was never meant as representing what the final game would be like, but rather an early impression to build upon with gamer feedback. It is unfortunate that this very commendable approach was misunderstood by so many...
Me, the earliest trailers had already convinced me: The art style was just fresh, the music rocked and the cumulative talent plus Nintendo involved intrigued me from the start. So even though the prototype was awkward I was optimistic that it would eventually become something special, maybe not a must-buy, but well worthwhile.
The new (REAL) demo convinced me: There is something about the feeling of piloting those Mechs that let's me come back for mission after mission, even though the presenation is nowhere near Astral Chain levels and certainly lacks. Looking forward to receiving the full game today. I'd say: give this one a chance. It might not look like much on video, but it "feels" just right.
Seriously. I hazard a guess that anyone uncertain about this must apparently lack even the most basic Sesame Street level of education... Whoever you are, I hope this helps:
That's some good use of the bezel... which we would otherwise have wished Nintendo would have avoided for any new Switch iteration, right? But here it's just perfect and wouldn't be the same without it...
@Nin10Doe Oh, behave! Do away with the flattery already. It's just too much. I haven't been called a little boy for, what, at least 35 years... Ahh, those were the days. Sigh. Glad to hear though that my cheer- and youthful spirit still shines through. Thank you, sweet peas, it is lovely chums like you that keep me young!
@rjejr Hahaha... ^_^' Wasn't defending him at all, just couldn't believe that anyone could have seriously believed this was true or plausible in any sense of the word (with the only exception of Beavis and Butthead perhaps...), so I assumed that he must be kidding. Sorry. My bad for my utterly naive assessment. I stand corrected and must accept what the world has come to. We're doomed. B&B have left their legacy in the "Internets"...
@rjejr
IF the product is real, I'd say that the larger circle at the top is for some sort of circular D-Pad... (or the circular opening works better for a standard D-Pad). It would make sense, considering that the Joy-Con aren't removable (are they still Joy-Con then, I wonder?). They probably just didn't update the render (yet).
And I am almost completely, utterly and 99,99% certain that Nin10Doe wasn't being serious and was just inb4ing. Didn't think that some of the smarter residents would jump on that... ^_^' Strange day.
Seriously hoping for an XCX port announcement during E3, because I just picked it up again after a months-long break. Love the setting, design and gameplay, and would gladly start all over again even after 100+ hours (half-way through the game...) if it meant being able to experience this fantastic and wonderous world in higher resolution. It's stunningly beautiful on Wii U. Can't imagine how breathtaking it would look on Switch... Might never happen, but I so hope it could be one of those "Wii U install base was too small for it to sell well, let's bring it for Switch" ports.
Would also triple dip into XC1 if there was a HD remaster coming... One can dream... ^_^'
That said, I personally don't have anything against them bringing this. It's only an interesting side note for me, and I don't have to click it after all, but I agree that the connection to Nintendo as in "let's see what the competition does" or "hey, M2 of 3DS-port fame are involved" is a little far-fetched. Though I don't think it hurts anyone either.
@Elithal @WhiteTrashGuy @SonicMos Don't get your hopes up. I find it highly unlikely that this is the "Switch Mini". For one simple reason: There's apparently only one SKU with this price tag. I can't believe that a "Switch Mini" will come in only one color... Judging from Nintendo hardware releases in the recent past I would expect at least two different color variations. And the retailer would need at least two place holders at the same price for that. If the image of the list is just cut short and it actually goes on to list a second SKU with the same price tag, then of course it's back on the table.
@Gs69 @Edu23XWiiU That's a "fiasco" to you? Boy, must you lead a privileged, protected, care-free life. Not a life that would enable you to survive in the real world, but still... But yes, they did indeed make a mistake there.
I didn't even notice when I first watched it, but watching it again, it is at 6:15. Putting this small error (and off-topic issue) into perspective: They did capture some footage from the original PS3 version for comparison and showed this, too. In in the YouTube comments they admitted that they've made a labeling error for the scene in question. This doesn't change what they say about the quality of the Switch port though, and I couldn't find anything wrong with the other footage of Switch docked and portable modes. It looks and plays great apparently.
@SakuraHaruka I actually kind of enjoyed NfS, too. But more on a technical level. I watched it 3D and it was a blast. Really good 3D cinematography is rare, and in my opinion they just nailed it in this movie (it's the only thing the later Residnet Evil Films have going for them, too). The images and stereoscopic arangement were jaw dropping in many ways, at least to me. The story was forgettable (I have actually really forgotten), acting was meh, but visually my turned-off brain really had a blast. It was quite a ride and one that I do not regret at all. In fact, I think I'm gonna watch it again tonight, now that I've been remined.
@BenAV Not making excuses for them, just pointing out possible reasons. There's a difference. Because we don't know if there's anything to my speculation or not. However, if I was in their shoes and I really couldn't make it work, I would make the same decision. Rather than putting off the vast majority who would then go on and avoid every follow-up iteration, because their experience just wasn't fun, I'd rather take my chances not adding a flawed option for a minority who would in fact be willing to work around the challenge. And let's be honest here: You've been here long enough to know what kind of comments they would get from the Internet folks if the only touch option was a flawed one that didn't work very well. Precisely: "Lazy! If they can't make it work they had better left it out! I am never touching any of their products again, incompetent fools...!" (probably can't make a right decision here...) All of this applies only if my speculation is true anyway and they did in fact try to implement it but couldn't. If they didn't try, granted, that's what I would call lazy. Trying hard and failing on the other hand is certainly not lazy in my books.
@BenAV
Yeah, I own one, too, but I've found I very rarely use it. Plus, I'm considering what the majority of Switch owners out there might be... And they will require a feature to work flwaslessly, lest they get frustrated quick and never consider that it also has another option. You know how people are. From this perspective I can understand that they would opt for not including a touch option at all instead of a flawed one that doesn't work correctly with additional hardware which most users probably don't have or don't want to use. That's all I am saying: I can imagine a scenario in which they have experimented with it, but couldn't make it work well enough for what they may have considered a large enough group of users.
I had considered Picross S myself, but will stick with the e iterations on 3DS for now. Because of the stylus/touch screen support. I'm actually with the "won't get it due to missing touch support" group of people here personally (for now), but can still understand why it's not included.
My two cents is that it just doesn't work with sufficient precision when only fingers are involved, at least not without constant zooming. With the tip of the Stylus on 3DS it was certainly a non-issue, but I'd hazard a guess that only very few use their Switch touchscreen with a capacitive stylus... I believe they will certainly have tried it, but couldn't work out a way to reliably (!) avoid hitting the wrong boxes. Everyone writing stuff on their smartphone knows what I mean. The penalty when writing a text on your mobile is at worst a funny auto-correction, whereas a couple of minutes added every so often in a game of Picross would be rather frustrating and murder the fun. So I could understand a decision to better leave it out completely.
It was one of my favorite pastimes in Pilotwings 64 to fly around freely with the bird wings after I had acquired them. No goals, no challenges, just enjoying the outstanding and impressive feeling of freedom, and exploring every nook and cranny of the three islands over and over again. Flapping your wings to gain speed and height, then soaring down to the ground again, through the structures, close to the ground then high up again, it was so awesome. They had this mode (and its controls) nailed down to perfection I think. It just felt so right. I spent more hours doing that than with the regular challenges, and to get the wings I had already played the game to bits in the first place... Good times. If this is anything like that, I'm in!
The "good reason" is probably just procedure and efficiency, different people from different departments who need to get the stuff off their desks as quickly as possible. Separate shipments may mean additional postage and more stress on the environment, but economically it may still be the most efficient way to handle it. No storing the several parts somewhere until the other parts are ready, no risk of miscommunication between departments/co-workers where which parts are located to bring them together afterwards, etc. ... that's my two cents anyway.
IF Nintendo does anything remotely VR with the Switch, I promise you it will be a completely different approach to the matter. So much so, that it will be good for a fun and interessting experience. I am certain of that. If you stick too closely in your mind to what you have come to expect from VR based on existing options, it's not surprising that you think it can't be done. I would agree with that. But Nintendo will always go a fundamentally different way. I am sure whatever technical limitation the Switch has, Nintendo will find a way to still create a novel and engrossing experience that everyone can get into. They will certainly not support what VR is now: A fun tech that's cool, but not for everyone. It wouldn't be Nintendo. Nintendo are open-minded. So am I. It will be fun to see what unexpected ride they will take us on next. Color me excited, with or without "VR" from Nintendo, for the Switch or with something dedicated. It will be different. And that's great!
@Varkster Nobody had heard about it until a week or so ago. The developers kept it under wraps deliberately until release. They knew they had something special, though somehow the concepts didn't sound all that exciting on paper. Apparently you had to experience it yourself to immediately see what makes it so much fun. So instead of trying to build hype beforehand and risking a "meh, just another BR shooter" reaction they kept it quiet and then surprise-released it, so the moment the world became aware of the game everybody could immediately try it themselves and see and feel what makes it so special. It was apparently a very clever move... 25 Million players within a week, nuff said.
@thesilverbrick What @dleec8 and @leo13 said. Plus, I also believe it was a matter of demonstrating strength and how much faith they have in their own product (and line-up). This is something I have felt from their presentations since the very first one in November 2016: The absolute will to show how much they believe they have created something so special and have a solid strategy behind it that it will perform extraordinarily well. Not only as a sign to investors but also one to the customers, gamers and non-gamers alike, especially after the Wii U and how it was received and noticed. Everybody questioned if they could pull it off, even Nintendo fans here on this site I might add... They've responded very strongly: Yes, we can! Watch us!
@GameOtaku Semantics. You know what I mean. Or if it pleases you more: I recently bought some cereal that didn't have any toys or stickers but a 50%-Off Coupon for Disney World valid for about six months. ...fill this in with my allegory and it might be a better fit for your tastes. (Hint: I did not buy the cereal for the coupon... and I greatly enjoy eating it)
@GameOtaku That's where you're wrong, I fear. By design and name (!) it's an Online Service, not a VC service, as I've stated above (and I do get that you're missing some other way to play VC games on the Switch, but at this time it's simply not available, and it doesn't have to be...). That's what Nintendo called it. For a reason. That you personally are not interested in online play (which is a perfectly fine opinion and I do not dispute that) doesn't make the service something else. To stick with the cereal example: If you're not interested in the cereal but only in the stickers or toys that come with it, the product on offer is still the cereal. The stickers and toys are still the free giveaway. If you decide that you want the giveaway so much that you're willing to part with money for it, it's still the cereal you have to buy. And that's what you pay for even if you decide to discard it. That is your choice and freedom. And again: it's fine. But it doesn't make the stickers the product you've paid for. They're still the freebies that came along with the cereal to give you added value.
@NintendoFan4Lyf My perspective on the "free" online period before the paid Online Services is different though. From my point of view - and statements from Nintendo and earlier experiences support that - they didn't charge for online from the start just because they weren't ready to provide an infra structure and solid experience to justify charging for it. Instead they said "Here's what we'll do: We'll start charging you only after we've made sure that we have a solid concept and the infra structure necessary. Until then, please enjoy it for free!"
This makes these reactions and the whining seem really ungrateful in my eyes. As an early adopter I consider myself blessed to have been able to play online for free for an even longer period that originally planned by Nintendo. Now I pay about one Euro a month (shared) for playing online, and once in a while enjoy the freebies that come with it (NES games at this point).
@IHateTombs There's over 1000 games on Switch right now for you to play. No need at all to restrict yourself to the free (!) NES games that come with the Online Service. You did read my comment to the end, didn't you? You'll get what I mean... And I apologize for the bit that you had to take personal due to the wording. I didn't mean anything by it. Just trying to make a point that we do not always get what we want... and more importantly: that it is absolutely fine! Especially if you concerntrate more on what you (can) have instead what you can't have (at the moment).
@IHateTombs You may rest assured that Nintendo know precisely what their fans want. They simply decide not to give it to them... at this time! Which spoilt generation do you hail from that you expect to always get anything you want? In my experience it's really not how the world works.
And inb4 anybody saying "Hey, but I want to at least get what I am paying for": You do. You're paying for "Online Services". Not for a VC service. It's never been called that for good reason, and it seems many people just don't get it. The NES games are supposed to be additional incentive - free of additional charge, as I see it - to sweeten the deal, but they're not front and center. Want to play online? Get the Online Service, and you'll already get what you pay for: the ability to connect to other players and play online together. Don't want to play online, and not interested in NES games either? Don't get Online Service. Simple as that, kiddos. The deal is very clear and aptly named. Don't cry because your cereal box doesn't contain the exact stickers you want. You don't buy it for the stickers - or do you? Then it's your own fault for getting it despite the stickers not being the ones you want. Otherwise just enjoy the cereal!
Just ordered the PS4 version of the game cheap just to get the Zenith toy to play with on the Switch... I thought the ships would end up just being collectibles (as in "collecting dust"...), but it's actually much more fun to switch the weapons and ships around on the fly if need be than I had initially imagined and expected... Seriously. It is. Game's great, too. Typical UBI formula, but somehow it works.
Okay, I understand that the guy is comparing the models from the games, but actually the 3DS had a separate, standalone Pokédex right at launch that came as sort of free promotion (you received new entries each day or through Streetpass if I remember correctly), and this featured models that looked very similar to what I see on Switch now...
So I think the comparison should not be between 3DS graphics and Switch graphics, but rather between artisic choices between the last 3DS Pokémon game and the first Switch Pokémon game...
@Moroboshi876 You beat me by a minute with this question. I've got the Limited Edition with the GameCube Controller and (supposedly) the Adapter on pre-order... Will we be getting this at all then?

Then there's the Loot Shooter (light) aspect of the game: Collect new equipment from defeated enemies on the battlefield and upgrade your Mech to your liking and play style. And that keeps me coming back, even if everything considered the game does have its shortcomings in other areas.
Re: Poll: Daemon X Machina Is Out Today, Are You Getting It?

Re: Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Has Now Sold More Than 1.7 Million Copies Worldwide
Re: There's Actually A Third Version Of The Sega Mega Drive Mini
@rjejr
Still counting? Add this to the list...
Re: GameStop's Database Lists More Than 20 Unannounced Switch Titles Ahead Of E3
@Elithal @WhiteTrashGuy @SonicMos
Don't get your hopes up.

That's a "fiasco" to you?
Re: Feature: Forget Sonic, These Are the 10 Worst Video Game Movies Ever
@SakuraHaruka
I actually kind of enjoyed NfS, too.
Re: Picross S3 Brings Colour Puzzles To Switch This Week, But There's Still No Touchscreen Support
@BenAV
Not making excuses for them, just pointing out possible reasons. I am never touching any of their products again, incompetent fools...!" (probably can't make a right decision here...)
All of this applies only if my speculation is true anyway and they did in fact try to implement it but couldn't. If they didn't try, granted, that's what I would call lazy. Trying hard and failing on the other hand is certainly not lazy in my books.
Re: Picross S3 Brings Colour Puzzles To Switch This Week, But There's Still No Touchscreen Support
@BenAV
Re: Picross S3 Brings Colour Puzzles To Switch This Week, But There's Still No Touchscreen Support

Re: Peaceful Exploration Awaits As Feather Takes Flight On Switch Today
Re: Random: Nintendo Repairs Faulty Switch And Then Sends It Back To The Owner Without Joy-Cons
Re: Rumour: Nintendo Could Make Its First VR Announcement For Switch This Year
IF Nintendo does anything remotely VR with the Switch, I promise you it will be a completely different approach to the matter.

Re: Respawn Would "Love" To Bring Apex Legends To Switch But Has Nothing To Reveal Right Now
@Varkster
Nobody had heard about it until a week or so ago.
Re: Japanese Analyst Sets Record Straight About The Sales Performance Of Switch
@thesilverbrick
What @dleec8 and @leo13 said. Watch us!

Semantics. You know what I mean. Or if it pleases you more: I recently bought some cereal that didn't have any toys or stickers but a 50%-Off Coupon for Disney World valid for about six months.
...fill this in with my allegory and it might be a better fit for your tastes. (Hint: I did not buy the cereal for the coupon... and I greatly enjoy eating it)
Re: Reminder: Three New NES Games Hit Switch Today, Plus SP Versions Of Metroid And Dr. Mario
@GameOtaku
That's where you're wrong, I fear.
Re: Reminder: Three New NES Games Hit Switch Today, Plus SP Versions Of Metroid And Dr. Mario
@NintendoFan4Lyf
My perspective on the "free" online period before the paid Online Services is different though.
Re: Reminder: Three New NES Games Hit Switch Today, Plus SP Versions Of Metroid And Dr. Mario
@IHateTombs
There's over 1000 games on Switch right now for you to play.
Re: Reminder: Three New NES Games Hit Switch Today, Plus SP Versions Of Metroid And Dr. Mario
@IHateTombs
You may rest assured that Nintendo know precisely what their fans want.
