My prediction is that we will get a (perhaps slightly delayed) platformer based on the Super Mario Bros movie. Mostly bacause A) it's the ultimate opportunity for a cash grab, B) We are long overdue for a Mario platformer, and C) the audience will be looking for it. And if I'm wrong and there isn't one in the works, that's a whole lotta cheese left on the table.
Ocarina of Time. All the NES and SNES Zeldas were constantly rented out back in those days, and my parents never bought games unless they were flea market finds. We got an N64 for Christmas the 2bd year it came out though, and made sure to waste all our birthday and Christmas money on new games. =D
First Starter: Squirtle. Still a fan after all these years. Great evolution, great personality, if not a tad simple. Favorite Pokemon in general: Carracosta. Gen 5 is what pulled me back in, adter gens 2-4 slowly saw me drift away. And there was a freaking blue fossil sea turtle Pokemon waiting for me. Almost as if Gamefreak knew exactly what welcome back present to give.
One of my least favorite Pokemon. The bizarre design being on purpose makes me feel a tad silly, but doesn't change my opinion. On top of that, I HATE chickens (thank you, Chicken from when I was 5), and I hate Fire/Fighting types. I am sick to the back teeth of them and hope we never see one again. Even the sneaky ones like Incineroar. Mumbles Fire/Dark my ass...
I'm open to anything after Luigi's Mansion 3. It was fine before hearing the characters quip and use catchphrases, but holding conversations? That was kinda cringy.
I'm a big platformer fan, but I'm also not big in to the retro or hardcore aspects. I don't mind some challenge, but... I'm old. I don't have it in me to fight with the games like I used to. I'm also a little put off by how everthing has to be open world in the big action rpgs nowadays. I know it's heresy, but sometimes I could really do with a nice linear experience.
It's funny how we sometimes forego our favorite games in favor of something new, which in turn gets to make its own special sort of impact. After skipping (or trying and losing interest in) every Assassin's Creed game after Revelation, I picked up Odyssey during a low point and proceded to obliterate it in a way I've played few games before or since. It really hit a sweet spot for me. Because normally with depression I lose interest in everything. I was thankful to have something to latch onto for once.
Giving a voice to a previously silent protagonist is always a big gamble. We are allowed to define them in our heads, and it never quite matches with how the writers choose to use them. I think a big part of it is that characters who focus on action are seen as more serious. Ruthless even. Because gun first, words second. And the writer wants to make a full character out of them and it just... Doesn't always work.
I just noticed.. if they do indeed make this the 'snake' entry, then the next 3 generations of Pokemon will feature livestock-based fire starters. I honestly can't see them doing that.
My WiiU was a VC machine during those years. I did eventually sell it off because I needed the money, so I'm glad I didn't have to rebuy all those games. Of course I'm also one of those awful people who doesn't try new things often, so the "Greatest hits parade" we've gotten from Switch Online is fine for me.
Maybe it's because I'm nearing the 40 year mark, but the biggest thing about NFTs for me is... They bring nothing to the table that I need. Every day since NFTs first darkened our doorstep, I have woken up, went about my day, and not once felt like I was missing out on anything related to that. I exist without them and that is what matters. Sorry, Ubisoft. Your latest attempt to ferret money out of me failed. Why not use all this energy to make games that can garner acclaim and profit through being absolutely fantastic instead of predatory secondary approaches?
I wondered why Gunvolt 3 was taking so long... And now I am hoping the reason is that they actually are trying with it. Never liked playing as Copen in GV2 so I passed on the original iX... Seems like maybe it was for the best.
You could add Monster Hunter Rise to the list. Sure you're supposed to be protecting your village, but the sheer number of beasts you kill during your grindfest paints you as little more than an Armored Cruella DeVille.
I don't think it's even lazy as much as it is completely tone deaf. Some of these guys need to actually sit and play the games they make. They get so caught up in the process, it doesn't occur to them that the thing is ***** until they see reviews. And then it's "Y no 1 liek my game?? ;.;"
Because.. it's not fun. Or in some cases for sequels, there's just not enough difference to justify the cost. Like Pokemon. You want accolades and rave reviews? Do something worthy of the praise. Learn some new coding techniques, come up with some different ideas... And for God's sake, quit trying to recycle the same battle system and animations and pretend they are new and exciting. Or in the case of something like Kingdom Hearts, offering slightly better graphics and like 15 minutes of new content for the price of a brand new game.
Sounds like Capcom and their Mega Man problem. They want the game to release and then be an instant bestseller, though both are retro titles that are considered something of a niche nowadays. Anything less than Big Banging Super Moneymaker is an abject failure to them. Nevermind the fact that putting talent on other games and then releasing crappy games for Mega Man or Castlevania is the exact way these franchises WON'T make money. Want Castlevania to be a household name again, Konami? Get the right people on it and commit the resources.
I never did circle back to trying out Rowlette. I guess prolly him. I usually prefer water starters, but Oshawatt and Princess Goofy are tied for their complete failure to interest me. Sigh.. not everyone can be Squirtle, or Froakie, or Sobble, or Totodile, or Mudkip, or Piplup... Ok seriously, those two really ARE the worst. Ugh.
Well, Switch Lite telegraphs its permenant undocking and says it's friendly to portable players, who make up a huge portion of Switch players. So the next Switch will need a name that tells why we have another version, what it does, and how it relates to you.
Since we have no real data, all we can do is guess. I think most of us are expecting better horsepower, since that was the key difference between the 3DS and the New Nintendo 3DS. Pro works because it implies the console has matured and can handle new things the old one couldn't. Menus, apps, non-drifting joycons.. If they wanted a more snazzy name.. Switch Up. The word synergy is there, and it effectively says exactly what + and Pro do. This, but more of it. And it sounds refreshing. So yeah.
Pokemon box art has never been the main attraction for me. The only ones I can think of that made any real impression were B/W2 and Sun/Moon. Maaaybe X/Y. The rest are almost always generic shots of box legendaries that have very little effort put into them. Even the Let's Go! games had better covers than some main entries.
My top 5 has drastically changed over the past few years. It used to be full of old favorites.. And I do mean old. Used to, the newest game was Twilight Princess. And upon realizing how damn OLD my top 5 actually was, I decided to replay them. The ugly truth is that I was having more fun with newer games. Not because "Ooo, shiny!" But because game developers are learning to make better games.
"I didn't tell you to throw that fluffruit. I gave them to you implying that they weren't as hard as they really were, but honestly... You know what an apple is. And it was your hand that threw these fruit all over Lental. All for the hope that the ensuing photo you took would get you my approval. Monster? No, kid. Look in the mirror. You're the monster."
Well, we all know Switch is a smash hit. So much so that whatever comes next is gonna have REALLY big shoes to fill. Nintendo is probably sitting on Mario Kart 9 so that when the time comes, people will put down their Switches and buy the Next Big Thing. If I was Nintendo, I'd be doing everything and anything to prevent my next endeavor from being another WiiU.
Nintendo always gets ragged on for having graphics and horsepower below the standards of other consoles. And yet they keep surprising us with games like BotW and Pokemon Snap. I will keep playing Snap not just because of its beauty, but like BotW, because of all the little interesting nuggets to discover. This game is surprisingly packed with them. And yeah, I guess it being pretty doesn't hurt.
FOMO be damned, I got my 3-D All Stars. And we all know we'll see those games again. Maybe next time with better Galaxy controls and Sunshine physics.
As for how I feel about Mario? I still enjoy his adventures. I've always liked Luigi more, but I've been trying to give Mario some love too. No denying we've had great memories. I kinda hope we get a new Mario adventure on Switch though, as I didn't care much for Odyssey.
Well, since Nintendo has a premier racing game already, you could instead ask "what can I accomplish with F Zero that I can't do with Mariokart?" Don't get me wrong, Mariokart is a great franchise. But Nintendo has a very distinct identity in mind for it. F Zero could be an alternative, or a testing ground.. or just a legacy franchise.
As MH is a very grindy game, I didn't wanna burn myself out on the demo. I played it just long enough to see the new stuff. Now that the game has released, I'ma play the ***** outta this game. World left me feeling a little cold, but me and my wife spent many long hours in Generations Ultimate (my first MH, she started in 3.) Can't wait to go out hunting together again. =)
Like any game company, they're probably considering things like having the right leadership, staffing, and timing for dusting off a piece of their back catalogue. You can poke them about only focusing on a select few series, but would you really want Metroid, Star Fox, F-Zero, ect. to have the Sonic the Hedgehog experience from the last 20 years?
Conversely we could look at Megaman, who lost his creator AND the support of his company. But someone at Capcom (sorry don't do well with names) was fired up enough to get the train moving and give us an excellent game: Megaman 11.
You can blame Nintendo all you want, but having the right people is always key for a revival. It's not just the philosophy, it's having someone who inderstands the project, has the means to complete it, and can do so in a way that satisfies old fans, new fans, critics, and parents with wallets. So if there is anyone out there who is the Wandering Samurai of F-Zero, Lord Nintendo has a job for you.
I believe we call this one "opening to mixed reviews." The sheer amount of people who buy this will negate any real effect the cons will have on the future. Gamefreak gonna do what Gamefreak gonna do, in other words. I just wish it was a game that would help me fall in love with Pokemon all over again. I had that magic with Black & White 2. I enjoyed X & Y. And then Sun and Moon was like "._." Although I do give props to the Ultras for being probably THE best way any of us will have to catch em all for a very long time. Also I can't help but look at the list of glowing reviews and going "You got paid, and you got paid, and YOU got paid.." XD
I do wonder if the results would have been different if they had used final forms. Often they are graded by completely different criteria than the beginning forms.
I don't think they're deserving of all out attacks, but they're not worthy of praise either. Have they done great in the past? Yes. Did they drop the ball this time? Yes. This is decidedly "meh" for me. What I do I want to communicate to them? Pokemon come first. I care more about the mons than their human characters. Don't be Animal Planet. You can do better, so don't give up.

Re: Review: Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 - Another Cracking Mega Man Zero-Alike
So Gunvolt is a footnote in his own game? And apparently that dog (no, that is not a dragon) we've been seeing this whole time?
It was expected that they'd make the iX games. Red Badass Guy always demands his own spinoff. So there was nothing to forgive there.
But this?? Screw you, Inti Creates. I'm not buying this installment. Probably done with this series now. I waited so long and just... Sigh
