Re: Nintendo Comments On Mario Kart World's Controversial Price

Bluerangervegeta

@N00BiSH What 1st party Nintendo game has been "price adjusted" to the customers favor on Switch? Because no matter how basic or crappy they were they have never been under $60.

i might be more willing to tolerate $80 Mario Kart if it meant Mario Wonder was $30 or less, but this "price adjustment" bs only seems to work one way..... Even on Wii ports that were $50 the day they were new.

Nintendo can take a leap. Hopefully they are done.

Re: Mario Day Celebrations Begin With Free Switch Online Trial (US)

Bluerangervegeta

@StewdaMegaManNerd Do you have to buy the laughably overpriced tier to access the GBA games?

If not Mario Advance and Mario Advance 4 are pretty close to All Stars 2/3. Some of the extra levels in SMA4 also recreate levels from SMB, although I found those bonus levels as a whole highly overrated.

You do have to deal with those abysmal voices though, they get less annoying as your brain learns to tune them out

Re: Mario Day Celebrations Begin With Free Switch Online Trial (US)

Bluerangervegeta

@Flem9000 Please enlighten us, what "service" are the offering? Because from where I sit it's little more than allowing me access to a bunch of old games, all of which that I cared about I already obtained on VC. Beyond that, what service is there?

By all means, paywall access to the retro collections. But locking out most of the functionality of games I already bought like Splatoon 2, Mario Kart 8, and Rocket League (before it went F2P) is just spitting in our faces. I despised it when Xbox did it, and it was the deciding factor in my never getting a PS4. But Nintendos online has objectively always been a much worse value proposition. Charging for it is scummy as can be.

Re: Mario Day Celebrations Begin With Free Switch Online Trial (US)

Bluerangervegeta

Nintendo paywalling online (even if it's only $25 a year) seems like a huge mistake in my book - personally I find myself using Steam Deck and Series X a lot more than Switch largely because I don't wanna pay for online. With the abundance of handhelds that can stream Xbox Series consoles nearly flawlessly, the Switch really shouldn't be billing for online. By all means leave the Nintendo classics collection behind a paywall, but making Splatoon and Mario Kart functionally nearly worthless isn't getting people like me to pick the Switch back up.

@batmanbud2 What a load of crap.
1. Xbox often has free play days - that's always how I enjoyed Overwatch before it became F2P. They also had a month of GP for $1 for forever, and constant free trials.
2. Modern Game Pass, even Game Pass Core, blows Nintendo's best online offerings out of the water.
3. Check the comments here and elsewhere - almost nobody can get this offer to even work.

Re: Japanese Charts: Fans Go Bananas For Donkey Kong Country Returns HD

Bluerangervegeta

@roboshort That's closer to a mod/patch than what I would classify as an actual remaster. Remaster is something more along the lines of OoT 3D, where the DNA/code of the original game is there but has been very heavily modified (in OoTs case new screen layouts/touchscreen support/map/etc to completely revamp the game, updated sound/music in addition to graphical elements, addition of 3d effects, etc). In other words it's not technically a remake but it's the next closest thing.

The gaming community really needs to come together to define these terms. Replacing the main character model,updating a few textures, running it all through an HD upscaled, and remapping a single control isn't a remaster, it's more like a (slightly) enhanced port. I see nothing that was done here that couldn't easily be done in Dolphin, and that should be a major problem when you are asking $60. At $10 or maybe even $15 I could let that slide, but pricing this equal to BotW, Odyssey, or FE3H is a sick joke. This kind of greed is why I left the games industry to begin with.

The fact that this is selling at that price means the Nintendo fanbase has a problem. I wonder how far Nintendo will push the envelope before the EA comparisons start in earnest.... Then again even EA regularly puts the Mass Effect Legendary collection on sale. What does that say about Nintendo?

Re: Banjo-Kazooie Composer Has "Zero Hope" For A New Entry

Bluerangervegeta

@Buizel Unfair nothing, Yooka Laylee is one of the most over hyped and underwhelming indie titles I have seen. It's the Mighty No. 9 of 3D platformers.

As far as Banjo Kazooie is concerned, they need to realize the franchise isn't as great as the nostalgic fans seem to think it is. Yeah the original was the pinnacle of 3D platformers, but Tooie doesn't hold up nearly as well. The various mini games and FPS segments felt innovative at the time but the game is a chore to play today.

And Nuts and Bolts sucks. People try to claim that was judged unfairly, but no. Even by its own standards, judged for what it is, it sucks bad. Navigating the world is a pain, the physics engine is a joke, soundtrack is underwhelming, and the dialogue borders on painful. Vehicle creation itself is the only part that's any fun, but 9 times out of 10 that fun dies the second you bring your creation into the game world.

Microsoft should go back to their original idea of a BK reboot that's self aware and changes up the occasional mission/story beat. Really no other direction to take it at this point.

Re: Japanese Charts: Fans Go Bananas For Donkey Kong Country Returns HD

Bluerangervegeta

This is ridiculous. This is approaching the same level of re-releases as Skyrim, only Skyrim had the decency to not INCREASE in price as the years ticked by.

Seriously, who are these people paying $60 for a $50 Wii title at launch that's been ran through a Dolphin-esque upscaler?

I remember saying $50 was too much for this back in 2008..... As a developer seeing 2D platformers launch at the same price as Skyrim/Galaxy/Skyward Sword/etc hurt. But this is just too much.

Can't wait for the Switch 2 to start getting $70 Switch ports of WiiU ports.

Re: Poll: So, Will You Be Getting Xenoblade Chronicles X For Switch?

Bluerangervegeta

@Zeebor15 I suspect by "new stuff" they mean they are actually gonna add in cutscenes and a mission or two to actually finish the damn story this time.

This game has a lot of arbitrary shoehorned in gimmicky crap tied into the gamepad, it's gonna take some work to make it a smooth, free-floating experience on Switch. I really can't see them spending enough money to do that + substantial new content for a port that's going to be coming out for an 8 year old system with a successor months away.

Re: Poll: So, Will You Be Getting Xenoblade Chronicles X For Switch?

Bluerangervegeta

I will never understand the love for this game, it's easily one of the most overrated pieces of software in existence.

Yes, the graphics are awesome for a WiiU game, creature design is cool, and it's an impressive open world. But the game is a failure in almost every other category.

That load free open world comes at a huge cost where the party clips through everything and bugs and poor design shine through everywhere. Crap like characters just walking through cars is everywhere.
The soundtrack is all over the place, but the music for the main hub area getting my vote for the worst video game music ever composed. The developers included no quality of life options at all to the point where changing your party is a massive chore (why in heavens name do you have to track them down in a huge city individually every time instead of selecting them from a menu!?). The inability to opt out of a quest once it's accepted coupled with the games abysmal balance means it's extremely easy to get locked into a quest for which you are extremely unprepared for, basically forcing you to choose between grinding for many, many hours and being over leveled for many other parts of the game or else basically ending your game there and starting over.

I remember one particular story mission in the games 3rd area, the dessert area. The enemies I was supposed to kill were around the teens or so, but the devs decided to stick them next to a hyper aggressive level 75 skyscraper that one shorted me anytime anyone launched an attack. With no way to back out of the quest, I had to sit and wait for the time of day to change so the monster would disappear. There are tons of stories like that surrounding this game.

That's before we even get to the more pedestrian stuff like clipping through the ground, the enemies clipping into walls, the sheer tedium of moving around New LA pre-Skell, or the incomplete story (oops, I mean the "cliff hanger").

Xenoblade Chronicles X was an impressive technical showpiece for the WiiU, and the art design is great. But the game itself is abysmal, and a lot of times it honestly feels like the devs went out of their way to make a playthrough as painful and slow as possible. It's been hyped into some mythical lost Nintendo gem most people didn't get to play, but I promise the reality is far more disappointing.

Re: Random: The World's Largest DS Just Got A 3D Upgrade

Bluerangervegeta

@Hydra_Spectre
Me too, but there are too many companies (Disney, etc) that pushed influence against TV manufacturers to discontinue 3D and push 4K. That's why it died so much quicker in USA vs the rest of the world.

3D features may be niche but passive 3D is extremely cheap to implement in modern TVs. But producing 3D movies costs more than 4K and the markup on blu ray sales is the same so that's what corporations pushed.

Re: Reggie Had To Fight For Wii Sports As A Pack-In, And Miyamoto Wasn't Happy

Bluerangervegeta

@Dinizz_2d Definitely, me too. One of my favorite features of the Xbox controller. Also love how you can just plug it in via USB and play with no batteries whatsoever.

I didn't even mind the WiiU Gamepad/DS/3DS method too much as those batteries are easy to replace if you can get ahold of one, and there are plenty of knockoffs to choose from. But the Switch is just obnoxious. Adopting the tactics of crappy cellphone manufacturers who try to force people to purchase new phones rather than replace the battery is beyond sleazy, at least with cell phones you can argue the bulk of software will transfer over. Unless Nintendo's next console is fully BC with the Switch then anybody who doesnt have access to an electronics repair shop is going to lose their entire library within a matter of years, and if Nintendo isn't willing to keep producing WiiU/3DS batteries I can't fathom that they will keep the Switch repair service up for long after it ends.

That's why, as cool as the Switch is, it's my last choice for software. It would be nice to take some AAA games portably, but it isn't worth knowing that I can't revisit them in a few years like I can with virtually every other system I own.

Re: Reggie Had To Fight For Wii Sports As A Pack-In, And Miyamoto Wasn't Happy

Bluerangervegeta

@Duncanballs @KayFiOS Oh man, this times 1000.

I actually got fed up with Nintendo's artificial scarcity BS with amiibo, Majora's Mask merch, ect. So I skipped the Switch at launch and quit following their news. But I was at Walmart one day and found the SSBU switch bundle for $360 (actually a penny or two more expensive than a system + game). I never impulse buy stuff that expensive but I caved and took it home. I set it up and entered the code excited to jump into the latest SSBU game..... Just to be told I couldn't download it. The game was still roughly 2 months from launch.

I can't think of another publisher that has the audacity to sell a bundle with a game that isn't even out yet, let alone one that's actually more expensive (if only a penny or two more). Why in the heavenly father's almighty name could they not just release the bundle alongside the game on release date?

Duncan balls I disagree with the battery being replaceable. Just because you can Google it doesn't mean it can be done by an inexperienced, untrained fan.

Have you ever tried replacing the batteries in a Dualshock? It looks overly simple too, much simpler than a Switch battery. It isnt. You have too be exceptionally careful not to mess up the shoulder buttons (if you aren't prepared for them when you move the back casing they will tumble right out, and good luck getting them back into place with the contacts without taking the entire controller apart), and depending on the model # of the controller the battery could be secured with different size tabs so it's incredibly easy to buy a battery that won't fit naturally. You also have to be careful about not allowing any dust or debris whatsoever onto the contacts. It's extremely easy for a newbie to wreck the controller, and fixing those shoulder buttons isn't worth the hassle.

I bet you that anybody inexperienced who tries to replace that Switch battery themselves has less than a 50% chance of pulling it off without damaging the system in some way. Probably less than a 10% chance. Getting around the glue in particular is going to take an experienced hand, and the new battery theoretically needs to be fastened in the same way with enough glue to hold it but not so much that it expands too much and moves the battery.

Re: Reggie Had To Fight For Wii Sports As A Pack-In, And Miyamoto Wasn't Happy

Bluerangervegeta

@DarkFighter
I remember the artificial scarcity that sparked the amiibo craze, the collectors edition of Majora's Mask 3D, and the near impossibility of getting a Majora's Mask New 3DS XL and NES classic. But at least they were still mostly being semi reasonable with their mainline games. They had issues with CC pricing, double charging Wii owners for VC releases on WiiU and crap like Mario All Stars on Wii, but as a general rule AAA Nintendo titles usually felt like a fair exchangle.

But I struggle to remember a time when they were this openly greedy and anti consumer regarding their mainline games. It's really hard to believe the same company that gave Wii Fit U to anybody who bought the pedometer and released Metroid Prime trilogy for $10/$20 on WiiU is now charging $60 for ancient software like Xenoblade Chronicles, Skyward Sword, Pikmin 3, NSMBU, ect.

Re: Reggie Had To Fight For Wii Sports As A Pack-In, And Miyamoto Wasn't Happy

Bluerangervegeta

@CANOEberry @Duncanballs
Thats some iconic terminology, "Switch's lifetime". Did you know the Switch is designed to be trashed when the battery no longer holds a charge? I know some of the sleezier electronics manufactures are also following that trend, but I refuse to believe they couldn't design the switch with a battery that can be swapped out like the WiiU and 3DS. At the very least surely they could have refrained from glueing it in. Once Nintendo decides to quit replacing the batteries themselves it's going to be a nightmare to maintain a working Switch. Wish I had thought to look that up before I invested so heavily in one.

My comment got a dislike? Oh no, whatever will I do?

@Bluerangervegeta
Forgot this:

https://i.ibb.co/XS9h9HN/1630333407032m.jpg

I remember pre-orderong both Xenoblade Chronicles and Skyward Sword, both were $50 by themselves. I even remember picking up Twilight Princess HD for WiiU, I think it was like $50 and even then it came bundled with a cool amiibo. I got WWHD free with the MK8 promotion so I don't remember how much it launched at but I know it wasn't $60.

Switch era Nintendo is pushing EA/Sony levels of greed now. It boggles my mind that they are charging MORE than the original launch price for software with an HD filter that can't even compare to Dolphins and people still pay it. And while I don't begrudge them for pushing out all the WiiU ports, charging $60 apiece is a joke and deleting 1st party games from the WiiU eShop is just extra spit in the face of WiiU owners.

I miss the Nintendo that gave 20 free games to people who overpaid for the 3DS, gave away 4 Swords anniversary and Excitebike 3D, and that threw in Bayonetta for free with Bayonetta 2. And that Mario Kart 8 promotion was epic. Modern Nintendo can't even sell working joycons.

Re: Reggie Had To Fight For Wii Sports As A Pack-In, And Miyamoto Wasn't Happy

Bluerangervegeta

@Duncanballs
Seriously?

Joycon Drift

$60 HDified ports of $50 games

$60 WiiU ports (many of which were on WiiU for $20)

Delisting said games (like Pikmin 3 and Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze) off the WiiU eShop to force sells of the Switch version

Refusing to bring over virtual console purchases to Switch, instead using it as an excuse to force an extremely anemic paid online subscription where the real motive is to charge for online play

Super Mario 3D All Stars shoddy quality and $60 price tag (remember SM64 was $10 on WiiU and SMG was $20 digitally on WiiU)

The higher tier of Nintendo online is a joke, as was the state of N64 emulation when it came out

Abysmal HD in the switch - my SSBU edition can barely hold the game plus DLC on its own

.....This is all off the top of my head, there is plenty I know I am forgetting.

Re: Reggie Had To Fight For Wii Sports As A Pack-In, And Miyamoto Wasn't Happy

Bluerangervegeta

@DarkFighter
Nailed it.

Mitamoto REALLY comes off as an ***** in stories like this. No doubting his creative genius at all (then again Wii Music) but he really comes off as needlessly greedy

"We don't give away software for free"....... Please. What a crappy attitude. It wasn't "free" it was included in a bundle with a $250 glorified GameCube with waggle.

I have been strongly blaming Bowser for the new levels of ineptitude, greed, and outright malice that Nintendo has shown it's fanbase during the Switch generation, but seeing more stories like this pop up makes me think that other execs, including Mitamoto, might be equally to blame.

Re: Talking Point: Super Mario 3D Land Turns 10 - Was It The Best '3D' Game On 3DS?

Bluerangervegeta

What kind of person actually liked 3D world? That game was a mess and atrocious..... As a Mario game it was downright abysmal. Easily one of, if not Nintendo's worst 1st party effort ever. Right in line with Wii Music and Urban Champion, although I would argue WM was better as it was more toy than game and UC was better just for the novelty of being a functioning fighter on NES.

3D Land was infinitely better. It didn't have to make concessions for crappy 4 player nonsense, and the lack of exploration and on rails platforming was a much better fit for a handheld. Plus the 3D effects were amazing.

Re: Metroid Dread: All amiibo Unlocks - Every Compatible Metroid amiibo

Bluerangervegeta

Remember when amiibo first was announced and Nintendo promised that characters would function the same across all games (in other words the SSB Mario amiibo would be functionally identical to the future Mario amiibos in all games)?

Apart from SSB has there been a single game that ever lived up to that promise?

It really sucks that to get every single health/missile upgrade you have to buy $30 figure pack that I have never seen in stock anywhere, while my SSB/Samus Returns amiibo do nothing more than save me a tiny bit of grinding from time to time.

Not as frustrating as $60 ports of games that launched at $50 nearly a decade ago, but frustrating all the same.

@Bluerangervegeta @fafonio @NIN10DOXD Sorry, logged out and saw I forgot to tag you. See my response here:. https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2021/10/super-smash-bros-ultimates-final-fighter-is-kingdom-hearts-sora#comment6585511

Tl;Dr That was a WiiU survey, we have had literally over half a dozen anime swordsmen added since then. It's very safe to say that opinions changed since then and very few people wanted another generic anime swordsman. The overwhelming consensus is the game has too many of them already.

Re: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Final Fighter Is... Kingdom Hearts' Sora!

Bluerangervegeta

@geox30 I domt appreciate the censorship on this site (heaven forbid anybody have a bad thing to say about Disney I guess) so I will just bow out by reminding you and everyone else that was a WIIU survey. Since then we have gotten Joker, DQXI Luminary, Byleth, Chrom, Roy, Child Link, Corrin, Cloud, and who knows how many other generic anime swordfighters that a normie wouldn't know from any other. I think it's safe to say most current SSB fans wouldn't have Sora in a top 10, let alone theie top pick.

Sora is beyond redundant in that regard, and historically Kingdom Hearts isn't even remotely as important as many other franchises aside from the "muh Dis-knay" aspect of it.

Argue all you want but it's a crappy decision that just reeks of jumping on the Disney bandwagon and nothing more. Like I said before..... Doomguy, classic Gannon (Ganondorf STILL doesn't have representation true to himself..... A bulky Captain Falcon clone that doesn't use any of his in game moves doesn't count), Kraid, Waluigi, even Crash/Spyro/Master Chief would have been more fitting. At this point SSBU feels more like an anime brawler than a videogame celebration, especially for people who aren't fans of JRPGs.

I mean I love Fire Emblem maybe more than anyone else here and even I have had enough.

I strongly suspect Soras inclusion is either a paid adveet by Disney or Nintendo jumping on the Disney bandwagon. Either way it kinda sucks, SSBU deserves better. When it comes time to port this game and they have to reskin all the 3rd party licensed characters it's gonna be a nightmare trying to repurpose these overabundant anime-esque characters.

Re: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Final Fighter Is... Kingdom Hearts' Sora!

@Caryslan Sakurai has sworn that the reason Goku couldn't be in smash is because it is reserved for gaming characters only. If he throws in Goofy or Donald, the blatant hypocrisy will blow up the internet.

As good as the man is he isn't above lying (Ridley is too big and scale matters even though Pikachu is over half the height of Charizard, ect), but if he lies about this it will piss off way too many people.
